DESCRIPTION:Iets meer dan de helft van de immigranten kwam uit de Europese Unie (EU) en European Free Trade Association (EFTA)\, vooral het aantal asiel- en kennismigranten van buiten de EU daalde\, over de afgelopen 27 jaar was gemiddeld 9 procent van de immigranten een asielmigrant. \nIn 2025 immigreerden 309 duizend mensen naar Nederland\, 8 duizend minder dan in 2024. Zowel de immigratie uit EU-landen als die van buiten de EU nam af\, het aantal immigranten met de Nederlandse nationaliteit bleef gelijk. Vooral het aantal asiel- en kennismigranten van buiten de EU daalde. Dat meldt het Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek (CBS) op basis van recente cijfers. Bijna de helft van de immigranten kwam in 2025 uit landen buiten de EU en EFTA. Bijna 37 procent komt uit een EU- of EFTA-land en 14 procent heeft de Nederlandse nationaliteit. DESCRIPTION:The International Day of the Tropics celebrates the extraordinary diversity of the tropics while highlighting unique challenges and opportunities nations of the Tropics face\, it provides an opportunity to take stock of progress across the tropics\, to share tropical stories and expertise and to acknowledge the diversity and potential of the region. \nThe Tropics are a region of the Earth\, roughly defined as the area between the tropic of Cancer and the tropic of Capricorn. Although topography and other factors contribute to climatic variation\, tropical locations are typically warm and experience little seasonal change in day-to-day temperature. An important feature of the Tropics is the prevalence of rain in the moist inner regions near the equator\, and that the seasonality of rainfall increases with the distance from the equator. The tropical region faces several challenges such as climate change\, deforestation\, logging\, urbanisation and demographic changes. Tropical nations have made significant progress but face a variety of challenges that demand focused attention across a range of development indicators and data in order to achieve sustainable development. \n\nBy 2050\, the region will host most of the world’s people and two-thirds of its children.\nConsistent with the higher levels of poverty\, more people experience undernourishment in the Tropics than in the rest of the world.\nThe proportion of the urban population living in slum conditions is higher in the Tropics than in the rest of the World.\n\nThe inaugural State of the Tropics Report was launched on 29 June 2014\, as the culmination of a collaboration between twelve leading tropical research institutions. The report offers a unique perspective on this increasingly important region. Marking the anniversary of the report’s launch the United Nations General Assembly adopted resolution A/RES/70/267 in 2016\, which declared that 29 June of each year is to be observed as the International Day of the Tropics. The international Day of the Tropics was designated to raise awareness to the specific challenges faced by tropical areas\, the far-reaching implications of the issues affecting the world’s tropical zone and the need\, at all levels\, to raise awareness and to underline the important role that countries in the tropics will play in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. \nLinks:\nDay of the Tropics

DESCRIPTION:Since October 2023\, Israel has been waging an extensive assault on all aspects of Palestinian existence in the West Bank. \nThis includes a broad\, systematic violation of human rights\, first among them the most basic right – to life. Lethal\, unbridled violence employed by the Israeli regime’s armed forces\, including the military and settler militias\, has led to an unprecedent increase in the killing of Palestinians\, and particularly the killing of children and teenagers by Israeli forces. Over the course of two years and eight months\, from 7 October 2023 to 7 June 2026\, Israeli forces killed 235 Palestinian children and teenagers in the West Bank. Five others were killed by settlers. In 2025 alone\, the year that is the focus of this investigation\, Israeli forces killed 54 Palestinian children and teenagers in the West Bank. The unprecedented scale of killing of Palestinian children and teenagers by Israeli forces is the result of a reckless open-fire policy\, expanded to be even more permissive than in the past\, that is currently being implemented in the West Bank. Those responsible do not try to hide this policy; rather\, they give it full systemic backing\, as reflected in the remarks of Central Command Chief Avi Bluth\, who publicly boasted that “we are killing like we haven’t killed since 1967.” Bluth’s claim that “96% of those killed were involved in terrorism” – an allegation exposed as a brazen lie by documentation of the circumstances of death in B’Tselem’s list of Palestinian fatalities – also reflects the Israeli system’s routine identification of Palestinians killed by Israeli forces as “terrorists” or “terror operatives”\, including civilians who were not members of an armed organization and posed no danger at the time they were killed. B’Tselem’s investigation ‘Unshielded Childhood: Palestinian children and teenagers killed by Israel in the West Bank in 2025‘ of these cases found that only two of the 54 Palestinian children and teenagers killed in the West Bank in 2025 were armed with firearms at the time they were shot. This identification creates\, de facto\, systemic impunity for killing. The Israeli system does not stop at justifying these killings after the fact. It also refrains almost entirely from holding the perpetrators accountable. According to data from the human rights organization Yesh Din\, since the start of the war in October 2023\, no indictments are known to have been filed in cases involving killings in the West Bank. Yet the immunity guaranteed in advance and the absence of any real demand for accountability after these crimes are committed are not confined to the legal sphere. They are also reflected in “public impunity” that stems from the Israeli public’s indifference to the killing of Palestinian children. In this context\, the sharp rise in the killing of children in the West Bank by Israeli forces cannot be separated from the more than 21\,000 Palestinian children that Israel has killed as part of its genocidal assault on the Gaza Strip since October 2023. The fact that even this inconceivable number has not led to public demands for a change in the policy of killing shows how far the dehumanization of Palestinians has gone in Israeli eyes. Global drug use and the number of drugs on the market have been increasing in the past decades. The century-long dominance of heroin in illicit global opioid markets is increasingly being challenged by changes in the illegal supply of opioids. Production\, seizures and use of cocaine continue to rise\, while low costs of manufacture and reduced risks of detection of synthetic drugs are contributing to their increase on illicit drug markets. Drug trafficking groups are seeking out technological innovation to target new audiences and ensure that drugs increasingly reach their users and help boost their billion-dollar businesses. Illicit drug markets have always been adapting\, and organized crime has always been looking to exploit gaps in governance and regulation. In response to these challenges\, this year’s campaign will showcase how the international community\, local and national governments\, civil society and the public is working together on innovative responses to reduce demand for and supply of illicit drugs and thus mitigate threats. Every year\, UNODC issues the World Drug Report\, full of key statistics and factual data obtained through official sources\, a science-based approach and research. UNODC continues to provide facts and practical solutions to address the current world drug problem and remains committed to attaining health for all. DESCRIPTION:Torture seeks to annihilate the victim’s personality and denies the inherent dignity of the human being.\n\nDespite the absolute prohibition of torture under international law\, torture persist in all regions of the world. Concerns about protecting national security and borders are increasingly used to allow torture and other forms of cruel\, degrading and inhuman treatment. Its pervasive consequences often go beyond the isolated act on an individual; and can be transmitted through generations and lead to cycles of violence. The United Nations has condemned torture from the outset as one of the vilest acts perpetrated by human beings on their fellow human beings. Torture is a crime under international law. According to all relevant instruments\, it is absolutely prohibited and cannot be justified under any circumstances. This prohibition forms part of customary international law\, which means that it is binding on every member of the international community\, regardless of whether a State has ratified international treaties in which torture is expressly prohibited. The systematic or widespread practice of torture constitutes a crime against humanity. Polen\, het andere oorspronkelijke lid\, was niet vertegenwoordigd op de conferentie\, maar tekende twee maanden later. \nHet Handvest werd van kracht op 24 oktober 1945\, toen de vijf permanente leden van de Veiligheidsraad – China\, de Sovjet-Unie\, Frankrijk\, het Verenigd Koninkrijk en de Verenigde Staten van Amerika – en een meerderheid van de overige 46 lidstaten het verdrag hadden geratificeerd. Op basis van art. 103 VN-Handvest gaan de bepalingen uit het Handvest boven de verplichtingen die lidstaten hebben op basis van andere verdragen. DESCRIPTION:Sit-in door een groep Nederlandse ambtenaren die zich ernstige zorgen maakt over het aanhoudende Israëlische offensief in Gaza – dat volgens het Internationaal Gerechtshof bestempeld werd als plausibele genocide- en het Nederlandse beleid in reactie hierop. \nJe kent ze misschien van de sit-ins die elke donderdag om 12:00 plaatsvinden voor het Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken. Als ambtenaren zijn zij doordrongen van het belang van internationaal recht. Ze legden een eed af op de Grondwet\, inclusief artikel 90 waarin staat dat de regering de internationale rechtsorde bevordert. Het is aan de politiek om het beleid uiteen te zetten\, dat klopt. Maar ook de politiek heeft zich te houden aan onze Grondwet en aan internationaal verdragsrechtelijke verplichtingen. Het is aan ambtenaren om de politiek erop te wijzen wanneer beleid het internationaal recht (mogelijk) schaadt. En die taak – die plicht – nemen zij zeer serieus. Zij verwachten van onze regering dat zij zich onvermoeibaar in gaat zetten voor consistente naleving van het internationaal recht. Concreet stellen zij vier eisen aan de Nederlandse regering en verwachten wij van de regering dat alle diplomatieke middelen worden aangewend om onderstaande te bewerkstelligen: \n1. Ook wil het kabinet de pensioenleeftijd verhogen en bezuinigen op onze  zorg. Dat raakt iedere burger in Nederland onnodig hard. Terwijl winstgevende bedrijven en de allerrijksten niet meebetalen. Het kabinet kán eerlijkere keuzes maken maar doet dat niet. Dit is voor werkende mensen onacceptabel. Als het kabinet het ultimatum van de bonden negeert en de plannen niet voor woensdag 24 juni 2026 definitief van tafel haalt\, dan zal het openbaar vervoer in heel Nederland die dag tot 08:00 stilliggen en pas vanaf 08:00 weer op gang komen. De vakbonden hebben het kabinet gevraagd de afbraakplannen van tafel te halen. Dat heeft het kabinet niet gedaan. Er is alleen toegezegd de afspraken over de pensioenleeftijd niet nu al te breken. Als dit wanbeleid 24 juni niet definitief van tafel is\, komen er die dag landelijke acties. DESCRIPTION:World Whistleblowers Day was created to raise global public awareness in combating corruption\, the day is about the important role of whistleblowers in combating fraud\, abuse and corruption. \nWhistleblowing (also whistle-blowing or whistle blowing) is the activity of a person\, often an employee\, revealing information about activity within a private or public organization that is deemed illegal\, immoral\, illicit\, unsafe\, unethical or fraudulent. Whistleblowers can use a variety of internal or external channels to communicate information or allegations. Over 83% of whistleblowers report internally to a supervisor\, human resources\, compliance\, or a neutral third party within the company\, hoping that the company will address and correct the issues. A whistleblower can also bring allegations to light by communicating with external entities\, such as the media\, government\, or law enforcement. Some countries legislate as to what constitutes a protected disclosure\, and the permissible methods of presenting a disclosure. Whistleblowing can occur in the private sector or the public sector. Whistleblowers often face retaliation for their disclosure\, including termination of employment. \nSeveral other actions may also be considered retaliatory\, including an unreasonable increase in workloads\, reduction of hours\, preventing task completion\, mobbing or bullying. Laws in many countries attempt to provide protection for whistleblowers and regulate whistleblowing activities. Seventy-five years after the adoption of the 1951 Convention relating to the Status of Refugees\, that promise remains one of the clearest undertakings of the international community: that people forced to flee should not be returned to danger\, and should be able to live in dignity while displaced. Born from the ruins of war\, it was never meant for one region\, one generation or one people\, but for humanity as a whole. That safeguard is urgently needed today. More than 117 million people are forcibly displaced worldwide\, including families uprooted by war in the Sudan\, violence in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and prolonged crises in Ukraine\, Afghanistan\, the Syrian Arab Republic\, Myanmar and beyond. When people fleeing danger are denied protection\, insecurity deepens: families are driven on to perilous routes\, children lose years of learning\, women and girls face greater risks\, and host communities are left without the support they need. Protecting refugees is therefore not only an act of compassion; it is a condition of stability and peace. “Until Everyone Is Safe” is a call to keep that promise alive. DESCRIPTION:In July 2021\, the UN General Assembly highlighted global concerns over “the exponential spread and proliferation of hate speech” around the world and adopted a resolution on “promoting inter-religious and intercultural dialogue and tolerance in countering hate speech”. \nThe resolution recognizes the need to counter discrimination\, xenophobia and hate speech and calls on all relevant actors\, including States\, to increase their efforts to address this phenomenon\, in line with international human rights law. The resolution proclaimed 18 June as the International Day for Countering Hate Speech\, building on the UN Strategy and Plan of Action on Hate Speech launched on 18 June 2019. To observe the Day\, the United Nations invites governments\, international organizations\, civil society groups\, and individuals to hold events and initiatives promoting strategies to identify\, address and counter hate speech. This first UN system-wide initiative designed to tackle hate speech provides an essential framework for how the Organization can support and complement States’ efforts. Whether as Member States the private sector\, the media and internet corporations\, faith leaders\, educators\, actors of civil society\, those affected by hate speech\, youth\, or simply as an individual\, we all have the moral duty of speaking out firmly against instances of hate speech and play a crucial role to in countering this scourge. Since the spread of hateful rhetoric can be an early warning of violence – including atrocity crimes – limiting hate speech could contribute to mitigating its impact. Addressing hate speech remains a key priority within the United Nations system\, through the implementation of the UN Strategy and Plan of Action on Hate Speech. Subsequently\, General Assembly resolution A/RES/79/316 adopted in June 2025 “encourages Member States to consider […] initiatives that identify areas for practical action in all sectors and levels of society for the promotion of interreligious and intercultural dialogue\, tolerance\, understanding and cooperation” as a tool to counter hate speech. \nThe UN Strategy and Plan of Action on Hate Speech underscores the importance of partnerships in the fight against hate speech. Indeed\, as hate speech affects the whole society\, a whole-of-society approach is necessary to address this phenomenon.  Relatedly\, the UN Strategy stresses the need to raise awareness about respect for human rights\, non-discrimination\, coexistence\, acceptance and respect for diversity and understanding of other cultures and religions\, as well as the promotion of intercultural\, interfaith and interreligious dialogue. It urges for the use of advocacy to highlight hate speech trends of concern as well as to express sympathy and support to targeted individuals or groups. This is most resonant in the current context of rising conflicts globally\, both in their frequency and intensity as well as in the ways in which hate speech is used to fuel them. To protect all those at risk of hate speech\, which can lead to incitement to violence\, there is an urgent need to further strengthen practical approaches and tools\, and scalable strategies to break the cycles of hate\, elevate  empathy\, and acceptance\, and respect for diversity as critical pillars in any society and reinforce the foundations of dialogue and understanding as instrumental to building peaceful and just societies. These practical approaches entail policies\, new technologies and innovative partnerships to advance and sustain efforts to not only address the root causes of hate speech but also mitigate its impact on societies and communities and to counter it. They consider the intersection of education\, media\, digital literacy\, monitoring\, data collection and identification of access points for interventions. In the current international landscape\, partnerships also remain essential in designing and implementing these practical tools and approaches for countering hate speech and other noxious narratives and contribute to a healthy information ecosystem. \nLinks:\nDay for Countering Hate Speech

Het is aan ambtenaren om de politiek erop te wijzen wanneer beleid het internationaal recht (mogelijk) schaadt. En die taak – die plicht – nemen zij zeer serieus. Zij verwachten van onze regering dat zij zich onvermoeibaar in gaat zetten voor consistente naleving van het internationaal recht. Concreet stellen zij vier eisen aan de Nederlandse regering en verwachten wij van de regering dat alle diplomatieke middelen worden aangewend om onderstaande te bewerkstelligen: \n1. The World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought is observed every year to promote public awareness of international efforts to combat desertification. Yet viable pathways for action already exist. DESCRIPTION:Het strafrecht pakt ongunstiger uit voor verdachten met een zwakkere sociaaleconomische positie\, zij krijgen gemiddeld zwaardere straffen. \nOngelijke uitkomsten in het strafrecht wijzen niet noodzakelijk op onwettig onderscheid. Het Nederlandse strafrecht biedt immers ruimte voor maatwerk\, waarbij de persoonlijke situatie van de verdachte mag worden meegewogen. Maar door een optelsom van factoren\, is er volgens onderzoekers van het Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek- en Datacentrum (WODC) sprake van een structureel ongunstigere positie voor deze groep mensen. Dit blijkt uit twee vandaag verschenen WODC-rapporten: Vinkjes in het strafrecht? en Scherp op selectiviteit. Eerder verscheen het rapport Van verdenking tot vrijheidsstraf\, dat gaat over etnische selectiviteit. DESCRIPTION:Klik op afbeelding om te lezen\nThe World Day Against Child Labour\, which is held every year on June 12\, is an International Labour Organization (ILO)-sanctioned holiday first launched in 2002 aiming to raise awareness and activism to prevent child labour\, it was spurred by ratifications of ILO Convention No. 138 on the minimum age for employment and ILO Convention No. 182 on the worst forms of child labour. \nThe ILO\, the United Nations body that regulates the world of work\, launched the World Day Against Child Labour in 2002 in order to bring attention and join efforts to fight against child labour. This day brings together governments\, local authorities\, civil society and international\, workers and employers organizations to point out the child labour problem and define the guidelines to help child labourers. According to ILO’s data\, hundreds of millions of girls and boys throughout the world are involved in work that deprives them of receiving an adequate education\, health\, leisure and basic freedoms\, violating this way their rights. Of these children\, more than half are exposed to the worst forms of child labour. These worst forms of child labour include work in hazardous environments\, slavery\, or other forms of forced labour\, illicit activities such as drug trafficking and prostitution\, as well as involvement in armed conflict. \n2026 Theme: Red card to child labour: Fair play for children\, decent work for adults. The 2026 World Day comes at a decisive moment. The 6th Global Conference on the Elimination of Child Labour\, held in Marrakech\, reaffirmed the urgent need to accelerate action and translate commitments into concrete results. The Marrakech Global Framework for Action against Child Labour provides a concrete roadmap and indicators for tackling child labour through integrated responses that address root causes and protect every child’s rights. Under the slogan “Red card to child labour: Fair play for children\, decent work for adults”\, the 2026 World Day Against Child Labour campaign calls for reinforced action on the policies that prevent child labour and withdrawn children from it:  quality education\, universal social protection\, decent work and adequate livelihoods for adults\, stronger laws and enforcement\, better data and monitoring systems\, and responsible action in agriculture and supply chains. This action is urgently needed. Despite progress\, 138 million children remain in child labour worldwide\, including nearly 54 million in hazardous work. On this World Day Against Child Labour\, raise the Red card to child labour.
