DESCRIPTION:The United Nations General Assembly decided to designate 22 August as the International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief. \nThe General Assembly\, in its resolution A/RES/73/296\, designated 22 August as the International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief recognizing the importance of providing victims of acts of violence based on religion or belief and members of their families with appropriate support and assistance in accordance with applicable law. It strongly deplored all acts of violence against persons on the basis of their religion or belief\, as well as any such acts directed against their homes\, businesses\, properties\, schools\, cultural centres or places of worship\, as well as all attacks on and in religious places\, sites and shrines that are in violation of international law. A previous resolution establishing the International Day of Remembrance of and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism (A/RES/72/165) also recognized that working together to enhance the implementation of existing legal regimes that protect individuals against discrimination and hate crimes\, increasing interreligious\, interfaith and intercultural efforts and expanding human rights education are important first steps in combating incidents of intolerance\, discrimination and violence against individuals on the basis of religion or belief. \nBy proclaiming an International Day Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief\, the General Assembly recalled that States have the primary responsibility to promote and protect human rights\, including the human rights of persons belonging to religious minorities\, including their right to exercise their religion or belief freely. Freedom of religion or belief\, freedom of opinion and expression\, the right to peaceful assembly and the right to freedom of association are interdependent\, interrelated and mutually reinforcing. They are enshrined in articles 18\, 19 and 20 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Upholding these rights plays an important role in the fight against all forms of intolerance and of discrimination based on religion or belief. The open\, constructive and respectful debate of ideas\, as well as interreligious\, interfaith and intercultural dialogue\, at the local\, national\, regional and international levels\, can play a positive role in combating religious hatred\, incitement and violence. Furthermore\, the exercise of the right to freedom of opinion and expression and full respect for the freedom to seek\, receive and impart information can play a positive role in strengthening democracy and combating religious intolerance. \nLinks:\nDay Commemorating the Victims of Acts of Violence Based on Religion or Belief

DESCRIPTION:The Day of Remembrance and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2017. \nIn its resolution 72/165 (2017)\, the General Assembly\, established the International Day of Remembrance of and Tribute to the Victims of Terrorism to be commemorated annually on 21 August\, in order to honour and support the victims and survivors of terrorism and to promote and protect the full enjoyment of their human rights and fundamental freedoms. In April 2020\, mandated by General Assembly resolution 73/305\, the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres published his report on the ‘Progress of the UN system to support Member States in assisting victims of terrorism’ (A/74/790)\, which calls for the ‘enhancement of international cooperation to assist victims of terrorism’. Member States\, through the biennial review resolutions of the Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy have emphasized the important role of victims of terrorism in countering terrorism\, promoting international solidarity\, preventing violent extremism\, and helping Member States recognize and uphold their human rights\, and support their distinct needs. \nSince the sixth review of the Strategy (2018)\, developments at the international\, regional\, and national levels have increasingly demonstrated that support to victims has moved beyond symbolic solidarity towards a more robust engagement to advance their rights and needs. This is reflected in the establishment in 2019 of a Group of Friends of Victims of Terrorism\, and the adoption of General Assembly resolution A/RES/73/305 on the enhancement of international cooperation to assist victims of terrorism. The eighth review resolution\, adopted on 22 June 2023 (A/RES/77/298) notes the importance of upholding the rights and supporting the needs of victims of terrorism\, in particular of women\, children and those affected by sexual and gender-based violence committed by terrorists. It encourages all Member States to develop national comprehensive assistance plans for victims of terrorism and their families to address the immediate-\, short- and long-term needs of victims of terrorism. The resolution welcomed the first United Nations Global Congress of Victims of Terrorism\, held in September 2022 at UN Headquarters\, encourages the UN Office of Counter-Terrorism\, through the Global Victims of Terrorism Support Programme and the United Nations Victims of Terrorism Support Portal\, to continue to raise awareness on victims of terrorism and the promotion and protection of their rights. DESCRIPTION:Ieder jaar op 20 augustus wordt een event georganiseerd om stil te staan bij de dood van Kerwin Lucas Duinmeijer en om een stem te laten horen tegen racisme\, fascisme en oorlog. \n \nIn de nacht van 20 op 21 augustus 1983 vond in de Damstraat in Amsterdam een steekpartij plaats\, waarbij de 15-jarige Antilliaan Kerwin Duinmeijer (officiële naam: Kerwin Urleson Lucas) ernstig gewond raakte\, hij overleed enkele uren later in een ziekenhuis aan bloedverlies. De dader was de 16-jarige skinhead Nico Bodemeijer. In de media en in de publieke opinie werd kort na de gebeurtenis algemeen aangenomen dat racisme een belangrijke rol had gespeeld in de toedracht omdat tijdens het incident door Bodemeijer racistische taal werd geuit. De dood van Duinmeijer werd bestempeld als eerste racistische moord in Nederland na de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Niettemin stelde de rechter in haar vonnis dat het niet aannemelijk is geworden dat racisme het wezenlijk motief voor de daad is geweest. Maar ook de politiek heeft zich te houden aan onze Grondwet en aan internationaal verdragsrechtelijke verplichtingen. Het is aan ambtenaren om de politiek erop te wijzen wanneer beleid het internationaal recht (mogelijk) schaadt. En die taak – die plicht – nemen zij zeer serieus. Zij verwachten van onze regering dat zij zich onvermoeibaar in gaat zetten voor consistente naleving van het internationaal recht. Concreet stellen zij vier eisen aan de Nederlandse regering en verwachten wij van de regering dat alle diplomatieke middelen worden aangewend om onderstaande te bewerkstelligen: \n1. Maximale inzet op een onmiddellijk en permanent staakt-het-vuren en volledige humanitaire toegang tot Gaza. \n2. ⁠Een eind aan alle vormen van steun voor én rechtvaardiging van Israëls huidige militaire optreden in Gaza en erkenning van het internationale humanitaire en oorlogsrecht; \n3. ⁠De onmiddellijke naleving van uitspraken van het Internationaal Gerechtshof (ICJ). \n4. DESCRIPTION:Sit-in door een groep Nederlandse ambtenaren die zich ernstige zorgen maakt over het aanhoudende Israëlische offensief in Gaza – dat volgens het Internationaal Gerechtshof bestempeld werd als plausibele genocide- en het Nederlandse beleid in reactie hierop. \nJe kent ze misschien van de sit-ins die elke donderdag om 12:00 plaatsvinden voor het Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken. Als ambtenaren zijn zij doordrongen van het belang van internationaal recht. Ze legden een eed af op de Grondwet\, inclusief artikel 90 waarin staat dat de regering de internationale rechtsorde bevordert. Het is aan de politiek om het beleid uiteen te zetten\, dat klopt. Maar ook de politiek heeft zich te houden aan onze Grondwet en aan internationaal verdragsrechtelijke verplichtingen. Het is aan ambtenaren om de politiek erop te wijzen wanneer beleid het internationaal recht (mogelijk) schaadt. En die taak – die plicht – nemen zij zeer serieus. Zij verwachten van onze regering dat zij zich onvermoeibaar in gaat zetten voor consistente naleving van het internationaal recht. Concreet stellen zij vier eisen aan de Nederlandse regering en verwachten wij van de regering dat alle diplomatieke middelen worden aangewend om onderstaande te bewerkstelligen: \n1. Maximale inzet op een onmiddellijk en permanent staakt-het-vuren en volledige humanitaire toegang tot Gaza. \n2. ⁠Een eind aan alle vormen van steun voor én rechtvaardiging van Israëls huidige militaire optreden in Gaza en erkenning van het internationale humanitaire en oorlogsrecht; \n3. ⁠De onmiddellijke naleving van uitspraken van het Internationaal Gerechtshof (ICJ). \n4. SUMMARY:Atomic Bomb Day / herdenking Hiroshima 2026
DESCRIPTION:In 1945 voerden de Verenigde Staten in Japan twee aanvallen met een kernbom uit. \nOp 6 augustus werd de bom “Little Boy” boven de Japanse havenstad Hiroshima tot ontploffing gebracht. Drie dagen later werd een tweede bombardement uitgevoerd\, nu met de bom “Fat Man” boven de stad Nagasaki. Drie dagen later besloot de hoogste Japanse leider\, keizer Hirohito\, tot de onvoorwaardelijke overgave van Japan. Ook al heeft de keizer er nooit met een woord over gesproken\, werd aangenomen dat de twee atoombommen de reden waren voor de capitulatie van het Japanse Keizerrijk. Nog steeds wordt geregeld beweerd en door menigeen geloofd dat de dood van meer dan 210.000 anderen (waaronder 38.000 kinderen)\, grotendeels burgers – noodzakelijk en gerechtvaardigd was. Om de Tweede Wereldoorlog (WOII) te beëindigen en daarmee juist veel leed te besparen\, onder andere vanwege de voor november 1945 geplande Amerikaanse invasie. Dit frame berust grotendeels op mythes. Natuurlijk droegen de bombardementen van de VS bij aan de uiteindelijke overgave van Japan\, op 15 augustus 1945. Maar historici zien de deelname van de Sovjet-Unie aan de strijd tegen Japan vanaf 9 augustus dat jaar doorgaans als een (veel) belangrijker motief. Met name door de oorlogsverklaring van de Sovjet-Unie zag de politieke en militaire leiding in Tokio geen heil meer in voorzetting van de strijd. Dit gaf keizer Hirohito toentertijd zelf ook aan. Tot dan hoopte zijn kabinet dat de Sovjet-Unie diplomatiek nog een rol kon spelen om de oorlog te beëindigen. Op 2 september 1945 gaven de Japanners zich formeel over door aan boord van het Amerikaanse slagschip USS Missouri\, gelegen in de baai van Tokio\, de capitulatie-overeenkomst te ondertekenen. Hiermee kwam er officieel een einde aan WOII. Op een open veld dat is ontstaan ​door de explosie van de atoombom werd het Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park gebouwd. Elk jaar wordt daar op 6 augustus (Atomic Bomb Day) de Hiroshima Peace Memorial Ceremony gehouden. Aanwezige zijn overlevenden\, nabestaanden\, familieleden en vertegenwoordigers van verschillende landen. De herdenkingsceremonie begint om 08:00 (lokale tijd)\, tijdens de ceremonie wordt er onder andere een gezamenlijk gebed voor wereldvrede gehouden. The results are stark: Average transport costs are more than twice those of neighboring coastal states. Export opportunities shrink\, foreign direct investment falls\, and economic growth slows. When a transit country is itself a developing economy—often the case—intraregional trade remains modest. We are at a pivotal moment for the 32 LLDCs across Africa\, Asia\, Europe\, and South America. Home to over 600 million people\, LLDCs face steep development hurdles due to lack of sea access\, geographical isolation\, and trade costs that are 30% higher than those of coastal countries. To spotlight these challenges\, the UN General Assembly has adopted a resolution proclaiming August 6 as the International Day of Awareness of the Special Development Needs and Challenges of Landlocked Developing Countries. DESCRIPTION:In heel Nederland klinkt op elke eerste maandag van de maand om 12:00 het luchtalarm van het waarschuwingsstelsel of waarschuwings- en alarmeringssysteem (WAS)\, behalve op feestdagen\, Nationale Dodenherdenking of bij andere speciale gebeurtenissen. \nDe test duurt 1 minuut en 26 seconden. In juni en december wordt tevens een NL-Alert testbericht verstuurd naar mobiele (GSM) telefoons. Het WAS is een netwerk van 4278 sirenes in Nederland die draadloos en onafhankelijk van elkaar aangezet kunnen worden vanuit de alarmcentrale van de regionale brandweer. De sirenes worden gebruikt om te waarschuwen via een luchtalarm voor (dreigend) gevaar\, met name indien er gevaarlijke stoffen in de lucht aanwezig (kunnen) zijn. Het systeem is ontwikkeld door Siemens\, en gebruikt elektronische sirenes op basis van de Federal Signal Modulator 2008 en 1004. Het waarschuwingsstelsel is eigendom van het Ministerie van Justitie en Veiligheid\, en is op 3 juni 1998 in gebruik genomen. De bevolking is van tevoren geïnstrueerd om in het geval dat de sirene afgaat naar binnen te gaan\, ramen en deuren te sluiten en radio of televisie aan te zetten. Op de aangewezen calamiteitenzenders kan de overheid verdere aanwijzingen geven\, bijvoorbeeld dat een gebied geëvacueerd zal worden. \nExtinction Rebellion maakt er met de actie Luchtalarm – dit is een noodgeval! telkens met kleurrijke vlaggen en banners een mooi maar bloedserieus moment van. Neem borden mee\, we delen tijdens de actie ook patches uit waarmee we onze boodschap kunnen uitdragen. \n‘Het Ballenalarm‘ is een ludieke actie waarmee de Stichting Zaadbalkanker vraagt om extra aandacht voor zaadbalkanker\, ook wel teelbalkanker genoemd. Het idee is dat mannen op de eerste maandag van de maand om 12:00 – als de maandelijkse alarmsirenes loeien – hun teelballen checken\, en dit elke maand opnieuw. DESCRIPTION:The International Day of Friendship was proclaimed in 2011 by the UN General Assembly with the idea that friendship between peoples\, countries\, cultures and individuals can inspire peace efforts and build bridges between communities. \nThe resolution places emphasis on involving young people\, as future leaders\, in community activities that include different cultures and promote international understanding and respect for diversity. To mark the International Day of Friendship the UN encourages governments\, international organizations and civil society groups to hold events\, activities and initiatives that contribute to the efforts of the international community towards promoting a dialogue among civilizations\, solidarity\, mutual understanding and reconciliation. The International Day of Friendship is an initiative that follows on the proposal made by UNESCO defining the Culture of Peace as a set of values\, attitudes and behaviours that reject violence and endeavour to prevent conflicts by addressing their root causes with a view to solving problems. It was then adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1997. In a time when the noise of division grows louder — fueled by wars\, conflicts\, inequality\, and fear — friendship feels almost radical in its simplicity. It doesn’t arrive with fanfare or policy; it doesn’t need speeches or signatures. It begins with something quieter: a conversation\, a shared moment\, a willingness to see one another not as strangers but as fellow travelers through the human experience. In this year’s observance of the International Day of Friendship\, we’re reminded that real peace is forged not only in negotiation halls or by writing into treaties — it’s built\, thread by thread\, in the trust we extend to one another in daily life. Friendship\, especially among young people\, holds a special kind of power. It can cross languages\, faiths\, and histories that might otherwise divide us. It invites us to listen before we judge\, to stay when it’s easier to walk away. And when nurtured across cultures and communities\, friendship becomes more than a bond—it becomes a blueprint for reconciliation. It teaches us that understanding isn’t a grand achievement; it’s a habit\, a practice\, a way of moving through the world that says ‘your well-being matters to me too’. This year\, as the world faces profound ruptures — between nations\, within societies\, even within families — the call to friendship is not sentimental. DESCRIPTION:Earth Overshoot Day (EOD) 2026 lands on July 30\, the date when humanity will have used up nature’s entire annual budget of ecological resources and services\, according to Global Footprint Network\, the international sustainability organization that pioneered the Ecological Footprint\, and York University\, which now produces the National Footprint and Biocapacity Accounts under the governance of FoDaFo. \nCurrently\, humanity is using nature 73% faster than Earth’s ecosystems can regenerate\, meaning this overshoot is equivalent to using 1.73 Earths. It is the highest level of global overshoot in human history. This level of overuse is possible because one can deplete natural capital. Such depletion compromises long-term resource security. The consequences are visible in deforestation\, soil erosion\, biodiversity loss\, and the accumulation of CO₂ in the atmosphere\, contributing to more frequent extreme weather events and declining food production. EOD is the calculated calendar date on which humanity’s resource consumption for the year exceeds Earth’s capacity to regenerate those resources that year. The term “overshoot” represents the level by which human population’s demand overshoots the sustainable amount of biological resources regenerated on Earth. When viewed through an economic perspective\, the annual EOD represents the day by which the planet’s annual regenerative budget is spent\, and humanity enters environmental deficit spending. DESCRIPTION:In late July 2026\, an estimated 60\,000 people\, predominantly young men\, breached and crossed the border from Morocco into the Spanish autonomous city of Ceuta in North Africa\, with smaller numbers attempting to cross to another Spanish autonomous city\, Melilla\, about 400 kilometres away along the Mediterranean coastline. \nThis overwhelmed local reception facilities and prompted the government of Ceuta to request that the Spanish government declare a national emergency. Most entered by swimming around the Tarajal and Benzú breakwaters or by crossing on foot along the shoreline. By 31 July\, Spanish officials said about 50\,000 people had voluntarily returned to Morocco. By 4 August\, at least 99 of the migrants were reported to have died as a result of the incident. The European Union will hold emergency talks on Tuesday\, August 3\, to discuss the migration crisis in Ceuta after tense exchanges between Spain and other member states. Twenty-two member states issued a joint letter calling for co-ordinated action and the strengthening of the EU’s external borders\, after some 60\,000 migrants entered the Spanish enclave from Morocco. Ceuta and Melilla are two autonomous cities of Spain located on the north coast of Africa. DESCRIPTION:Human trafficking is a crime that exploits children\, men and women for numerous purposes including forced labour and sex. \nTrafficking in persons is a serious crime and a grave violation of human rights. Every year\, thousands of men\, women and children fall into the hands of traffickers\, in their own countries and abroad. Almost every country in the world is affected by trafficking\, whether as a country of origin\, transit or destination for victims. UNODC\, as guardian of the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC) and the Protocols thereto\, assists States in their efforts to implement the Protocol to Prevent\, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons (Trafficking in Persons Protocol). The Protocol to Prevent\, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons defines Trafficking in Persons as the recruitment\, transportation\, transfer\, harbouring or receipt of persons\, by means of the threat or use of force or other forms of coercion\, of abduction\, of fraud\, of deception\, of the abuse of power or of a position of vulnerability or of the giving or receiving of payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person\, for the purpose of exploitation. Exploitation shall include\, at a minimum\, the exploitation of the prostitution of others or other forms of sexual exploitation\, forced labour or services\, slavery or practices similar to slavery\, servitude or the removal of organs. The World Day against Trafficking in Persons was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly\, in its resolution A/RES/68/192. Theme 2026\, “Trapped Behind the Scam\,” draws attention to a rapidly expanding form of human trafficking in which transnational organized crime groups exploit people to carry out industrial-scale financial fraud. Victims are trafficked for forced criminality and compelled to participate in online scam operations. DESCRIPTION:Het Verdrag betreffende de status van vluchtelingen of Vluchtelingenverdrag (Convention relating to the Status of Refugees) werd op 28 juli 1951 opgesteld tijdens een door de Verenigde Naties georganiseerde conventie na voorbereidende beraadslagingen in 1950 te New York en in 1951 te Genève. \nIn 2026 op 28 juli precies 75 jaar geleden spraken landen via dit VN-Vluchtelingenverdrag af dat mensen die vluchten voor oorlog en vervolging bescherming verdienen. Het verdrag definieert wie in aanmerking komt voor de status van vluchteling\, het bepaalt dat landen die zijn aangesloten bij het verdrag asiel zullen verlenen aan personen die daar een aanvraag voor indienen en bepaalt dat aan een al dan niet als vluchteling erkende asielzoeker bepaalde rechten worden toegekend. Het verdrag bepaalt de rechten van vluchtelingen uit conflictsituaties voor 1951\, terwijl een in 1967 opgesteld protocol bij de conventie ook de rechten van vluchtelingen van na die datum regelt. Basisbeginsel van het verdrag is de regel\, dat iemand die is gevlucht niet teruggestuurd mag worden naar het herkomstland als er gegronde vrees voor vervolging bestaat\, het zogenaamde non-refoulement principe. Dit beginsel heeft zich in de loop van de decennia nadat het verdrag in werking is getreden\, ontwikkeld tot internationaal gewoonterecht\, wat betekent dat het overal ter wereld voor alle landen is gaan gelden\, ook landen die niet zijn aangesloten bij het verdrag en ongeacht de status als vluchteling of niet. Dit verdrag kwam in de plaats van de gebrekkige regelingen die er voorheen onder de Volkenbond\, de voorloper van de VN\, tot stand waren gekomen en stond sterk in het teken van de gebeurtenissen in de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Het verdrag (en protocol) is anno 2023 door meer dan 145 staten ondertekend en geratificeerd. DESCRIPTION:Judges and other judicial officers such as magistrates\, court commissioners\, and arbitrators shoulder a profound responsibility – upholding the rule of law\, protecting rights\, and ensuring that justice is impartial and fair. \nBut behind the bench\, many judges struggle in silence. Long hours\, isolation\, and the emotional toll of decision-making can affect their well-being\, ultimately influencing the quality of justice. Corruption thrives where integrity falters. A judiciary under stress is more vulnerable to external influence\, conflicts of interest\, and erosion of public confidence. The United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) \, especially Article 11\, acknowledges this danger and calls for safeguarding the independence and integrity of the judiciary. Judicial well-being is a prerequisite for judicial independence\, integrity\, and efficiency. When judges are supported\, they are better equipped to resist undue influence\, uphold ethical standards\, and deliver justice fairly and competently. The path to international recognition began with the Regional Judicial Conference on Integrity and Judicial Well-being\, held in Nauru in July 2024. Organized by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) in partnership with the Nauru Judiciary\, the gathering brought together nearly twenty judicial leaders and global experts to confront a shared concern: judges around the world are under pressure\, often without the resources or acknowledgment they need. On 25 July 2024\, they adopted the Nauru Declaration on Judicial Well-being which recognizes that the health and well-being of judges is critical to ensuring judicial integrity\, independence\, and the quality of justice delivered to the public. \nLinks:\nDay on Judicial Well-being

DESCRIPTION:The International Day of Solidarity with Antifascist Prisoners originated in 2014 as a Day of Solidarity with Jock Palfreeman—an Australian man serving a 20-year sentence in Bulgaria for defending two Romani men from an attack by fascist football hooligans. \nHappily\, Palfreeman has been granted parole after serving 11 years of his sentence\, but there are still hundreds of others who remain imprisoned for standing up against fascism and hate. That’s why July 25th is so important; the International Day of Solidarity with Antifascist Prisoners aims to break down the borders and build an international response against fascism. By having an event\, raising money\, or dedicating an action to these comrades\, we can simultaneously strengthen our local movements by ensuring that those who have acted to protect our communities against the fascist threat are never forgotten\, as well as create the links of a powerful international solidarity which can transcend both the prison and the border wall. On July 25th we call on antifascists worldwide to act in solidarity with antifascist prisoners—the comrades who have been behind bars for many years\, the friends who have just begun their sentences\, the mates still awaiting trial—because they are in there for us\, and so we must be out here for them. \nLinks:\nThe International Day of Solidarity With Antifascist Prisoners
