DESCRIPTION:Sit-in door een groep Nederlandse ambtenaren die zich ernstige zorgen maakt over het aanhoudende Israëlische offensief in Gaza – dat volgens het Internationaal Gerechtshof bestempeld werd als plausibele genocide- en het Nederlandse beleid in reactie hierop. \nJe kent ze misschien van de sit-ins die elke donderdag om 12:00 plaatsvinden voor het Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken. Als ambtenaren zijn zij doordrongen van het belang van internationaal recht. Ze legden een eed af op de Grondwet\, inclusief artikel 90 waarin staat dat de regering de internationale rechtsorde bevordert. Het is aan de politiek om het beleid uiteen te zetten\, dat klopt. Maar ook de politiek heeft zich te houden aan onze Grondwet en aan internationaal verdragsrechtelijke verplichtingen. Het is aan ambtenaren om de politiek erop te wijzen wanneer beleid het internationaal recht (mogelijk) schaadt. En die taak – die plicht – nemen zij zeer serieus. Zij verwachten van onze regering dat zij zich onvermoeibaar in gaat zetten voor consistente naleving van het internationaal recht. Concreet stellen zij vier eisen aan de Nederlandse regering en verwachten wij van de regering dat alle diplomatieke middelen worden aangewend om onderstaande te bewerkstelligen: \n1. Maximale inzet op een onmiddellijk en permanent staakt-het-vuren en volledige humanitaire toegang tot Gaza. \n2. ⁠Een eind aan alle vormen van steun voor én rechtvaardiging van Israëls huidige militaire optreden in Gaza en erkenning van het internationale humanitaire en oorlogsrecht; \n3. ⁠De onmiddellijke naleving van uitspraken van het Internationaal Gerechtshof (ICJ). \n4. The ILO Decent Work Agenda is the balanced and integrated programmatic approach to pursue the objectives of full and productive employment and decent work for all at global\, regional\, national\, sectoral and local levels. Het rapport is opgesteld door een team van topexperts van onder andere Wageningen University & Research\, Deltares\, Sweco\, HKV\, Arcadis\, One Architecture\, WWF-NL\, Staatsbosbeheer\, Natuurmonumenten\, IUCN NL en Vogelbescherming Nederland. Nederland kan zich slimmer voorbereiden op de gevolgen van klimaatverandering als het de natuur laat meewerken\, naast technische maatregelen. Dat staat in het rapport ‘Natuurlijk kan het slimmer’\, dat het kennis- en innovatieprogramma NL2120 presenteert. Het rapport is een verkenning en eerste doorrekening van toekomstbeelden voor Nederland in 2120. Het beschrijft voor de kust\, de rivieren\, het veen\, de zandgronden en de stad welke natuurlijke oplossingen daar kansrijk zijn en wat ze opleveren\, vaak in concrete cijfers. Mensen die elkaar echt leren kennen\, voorbij de eerste indruk. Want als we eerlijk zijn\, zijn we allemaal verschillend. In hoe we denken. In hoe we eruitzien. In hoe we zijn opgegroeid\, wat we hebben geleerd\, hoe we samenwerken. Die verschillen zijn geen probleem om op te lossen\, ze zijn de werkelijkheid van elke werkomgeving in Nederland. En in die werkomgevingen gaan mensen daar prachtig mee om. Geological diversity refers to the natural portion of the planet that is not alive\, both at the surface and in the planet’s interior. By geodiversity\, we mean the Earth’s minerals\, rocks\, fossils\, soils\, sediments\, landforms\, topography and hydrological features such as rivers and lakes. The term ‘geodiversity’ also spans the processes that create and modify these features. Doe een melding. \nSamen beschermen we wat van ons is! De overheid veegt onze plekken van de kaart. Wij zetten ze weer terug. Sterke publieke voorzieningen zorgen ervoor dat iedereen mee kan doen. De bieb vraagt niet wat je verdient. Het zwembad vraagt niet waar je op stemt. Het buurthuis vraagt niet waar je vandaan komt. De deur staat voor iedereen open. Tenminste\, als onze overheid ervoor kiest om deze open te houden. De afgelopen kabinetten hebben veel te weinig geld beschikbaar gesteld\, waardoor onze publieke voorzieningen zijn uitgehold. Onze overheid bezuinigt steeds vaker op de bibliotheek\, het zwembad en het bushokje om de hoek\, terwijl zij de allerrijksten spaart. Die betalen namelijk naar verhouding veel minder belasting dan jij. De rekening legt de overheid bij ons neer: eerst is de bieb een middag dicht\, dan een weekend\, en dan ineens voorgoed. En wat eenmaal weg is\, komt meestal niet meer terug. Wij laten onze publieke voorzieningen niet wegbezuinigen. Daarom lanceren wij vandaag een meldpunt\, om op te komen voor wat van ons is. DESCRIPTION:De Dag van de Leraar\, ook Dag van de Leerkracht(en) genoemd\, is een jaarlijks terugkerende  speciale dag om waardering te tonen voor onderwijzers. \nDe dag wordt gevierd in zo’n 88 landen wereldwijd. De datum is sinds 1962 verschillende keren veranderd\, waardoor de dag in verschillende landen op verschillende datums gevierd wordt. In onder andere België\, Duitsland\, Nederland en het Verenigd Koninkrijk valt de dag op 5 oktober. Op deze dag wordt de waardering van leerkrachten benadrukt en is er aandacht voor het onderwijs als belangrijke factor in de maatschappij. Dit kan soms gepaard gaan met vieringen om hen te eren voor hun speciale bijdrage in een specifiek domein\, of voor de gemeenschap in het algemeen. Er vinden verschillende evenementen plaats om de dag te markeren\, van lezingen en spreekbeurten tot theater. Het is voor veel scholen ook het moment om het onderwijzend personeel een bedankje te geven en hun leraren en leraressen in het zonnetje te zetten. Van scheurkalender en boekenbon tot een dagje uit worden er geschenken gegeven aan leraren en leraressen. Decennialang heeft de fossiele industrie de aandacht gevestigd op wat wij met plastic doen nadat we het hebben gebruikt. Zo blijven twee veel simpelere vragen opvallend lang buiten beeld: wie maakt al dat plastic en waarom wordt er steeds meer van geproduceerd? Je matras bevat plastic. Je gordijnen. Telefoonhoes. Schoenen. Sportkleding. Tandenborstel. Zonnebril. Oordopjes… Dingen die je wellicht niet eens bewust als ‘plastic’ ziet\, blijken allemaal plastic te bevatten. En dat is plastic dat je kunt zíen. Microplastics kun je niet met het blote oog waarnemen\, maar inmiddels is duidelijk dat ze in het hele menselijk lichaam worden aangetroffen. Onder andere in bloed\, longen\, hart en hersenen. Er is geen ontkomen aan. Je kunt besluiten geen plastic flesjes meer te kopen of te gebruiken. Je kunt je afval zorgvuldig scheiden. Maar je kunt niet besluiten dat je niet meer blootgesteld wilt worden aan plastic. Plastic is overal – in de lucht die we inademen\, in ons water en in ons voedsel. DESCRIPTION:On the first Friday in October every year\, people celebrate World Smile Day. \nThe idea of World Smile Day was coined and initiated by Harvey Ball\, a commercial artist from Worcester\, Massachusetts. He is known to have created the yellow Smiley Face in 1963. The World’s first World Smile Day was held in the year 1999 and has been held annually since. After Harvey died in 2001\, the “Harvey Ball World Smile Foundation” was created to honour his name and memory. The idea gradually attracted the interest of some leaders of India’s Congress Party (“Ahimsa Finds Teen Voice”\, The Telegraph\, Calcutta) until a Satyagraha Conference resolution in New Delhi in January 2007\, initiated by Indian National Congress President and Chairperson of the United Progressive Alliance Sonia Gandhi and Archbishop Desmond Tutu\, called upon the United Nations to adopt the idea. On 15 June 2007 the United Nations General Assembly voted to establish 2 October as the International Day of Non-Violence. \nThe resolution A/RES/61/271 by the General Assembly asks all members of the UN system to commemorate 2 October in “an appropriate manner and disseminate the message of non-violence\, including through education and public awareness.” The United Nations Postal Administration (UNPA) in New York City prepared a special cachet to commemorate this event\, following a request from the Indian Ambassador at the Permanent Mission of India to the UN. The boxed pictorial cachet design was prepared by the UNPA and was limited to cancellation at UNPA’s NY location (not Geneva and Vienna). The UNPA has indicated that all outgoing UNPA mail between 2 and 31 October carried the cachet. Het is aan ambtenaren om de politiek erop te wijzen wanneer beleid het internationaal recht (mogelijk) schaadt. En die taak – die plicht – nemen zij zeer serieus. Zij verwachten van onze regering dat zij zich onvermoeibaar in gaat zetten voor consistente naleving van het internationaal recht. Concreet stellen zij vier eisen aan de Nederlandse regering en verwachten wij van de regering dat alle diplomatieke middelen worden aangewend om onderstaande te bewerkstelligen: \n1. Maximale inzet op een onmiddellijk en permanent staakt-het-vuren en volledige humanitaire toegang tot Gaza. \n2. ⁠Een eind aan alle vormen van steun voor én rechtvaardiging van Israëls huidige militaire optreden in Gaza en erkenning van het internationale humanitaire en oorlogsrecht; \n3. ⁠De onmiddellijke naleving van uitspraken van het Internationaal Gerechtshof (ICJ). \n4. Yet they are also highly vulnerable\, with many falling into poverty\, becoming disabled or facing discrimination. As health care improves\, the population of older people is growing. Their needs are also growing\, as are their contributions to the world. The International Day of Older Persons is an opportunity to highlight the important contributions that older people make to society and raise awareness of the opportunities and challenges of ageing in today’s world. \nThe 2026 United Nations International Day of Older Persons\, under the theme “The Age of Longevity: Rethinking Systems for Longer Lives\,” calls on Governments\, civil society\, the private sector\, researchers and older persons themselves to examine how societies can ensure that the additional years gained translate into healthy\, productive\, dignified and equitable lives for all. Humanity is living longer than ever. Global life expectancy has risen steadily for over seven decades\, yet the gap between life expectancy and healthy life expectancy reached 9.6 years in 2019\, reflecting the growing burden of noncommunicable diseases. Longer lives are drawing greater attention to how health\, social and economic conditions\, and human rights are experienced across the life course. \nLongevity intersects with health systems\, labour markets\, social protection\, education\, housing and fiscal sustainability in ways that cannot be addressed in isolation. Where years are lived in good health and supported by inclusive labour markets and effective social protection\, longer lives can generate a longevity dividend. Conversely\, without improvements in healthy life expectancy\, older persons may spend more years in poorer health\, limiting their functional ability\, well-being\, autonomy and participation. The Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing (MIPAA)\, adopted in 2002\, remains the cornerstone of international efforts\, alongside growing momentum to strengthen the human rights framework for older persons. DESCRIPTION:Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste is a United Nations-sanctioned designated awareness day observed annually on 29 September with the goal to raise awareness of the importance of food loss and waste\, this day is co-convened by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)\, whereas\, the day’s events are jointly led by these two organizations. \nThe main aim of the day is to raise awareness to the importance of food loss and waste related problems and their possible solutions at all levels\, and also to promote global efforts and collective action towards meeting the Sustainable Development Goal Target 12.3\, which targets to halve per capita food waste at the retail and consumer level by 2030\, and reduce food losses along the food production and supply chains. It has been calculated that an average of 74 kg of food per person is wasted each year worldwide. According to some estimates\, 1.4 billion hectares of agricultural land are used annually to produce food that will eventually be discarded; 14% of produced food (worth approximately 400 billion dollars) is lost between harvest and sale\, while 17% of global agrifood production is wasted. In addition\, food loss and waste related problems contribute to the emission of greenhouse gases leading environmental detriment as well. \nThe seventh observance of the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste (IDAFLW) is approaching\, now is the time for everyone to get involved and take action! The 2026 theme will focus on the “Transformative Potential of Reducing Food Loss and Waste”. DESCRIPTION:The International Day for Universal Access to Information (IDUAI) was proclaimed on 15 October 2019 at the 74th UN General Assembly to be held on 28 September\, following the adoption of the 38 C/Resolution 57. \nInitially the day (commonly called the Access to Information Day) was designated by the UNESCO General Conference. The decision to celebrate and promote 28 September as the International Right to Know Day was taken on the last day of a Freedom of Information litigation conference held 26-28 September 2002 in Sofia\, Bulgaria. Representatives of Freedom of Information (FOI) organizations from 15 countries took part – Albania\, Armenia\, Bosnia and Herzegovina\, Bulgaria\, Georgia\, Hungary\, India\, Latvia\, Macedonia\, Mexico\, Moldova\, Rumania\, Slovakia\, South Africa\, and USA\, as well as representatives of international organizations active in the FOI field. On 28 September 2002\, the FOI activists established the International Freedom of Information Advocates Network (FOIAnet)\, Access to Information Programme (AIP) being its co-founder and active member. The members of the newly found FOIAnet agreed to collaborate in promotion of the individual right of access to information and open\, transparent governance and adopted a Memorandum setting forth the goals and activities of the network. Today\, the members of the FOIAnet are over 200 organizations and civil groups from around the globe which exchange knowledge and experience and undertake international initiatives for better freedom of information standards. FOI activists around the globe organize a variety of events and initiatives on 28 September to raise awareness on the right of information and to campaign for open\, democratic societies in which there is full citizen empowerment and participation in government. \nConferences\, trainings\, competitions\, awards ceremonies\, rock and pop concerts\, theatre performances\, movies\, launch of info-requesting campaigns and new web sites\, focused publications\, etc. aim to further promote this fundamental human right and encourage citizens\, journalists and NGOs in their search for government held information. In some countries\, the Right to Know Day elaborated in Right to Know Weeks. Music has been composed especially for the occasion. In November 2015\, UNESCO declared September 28th as the “International Day for Universal Access to Information” and was first held on 28 September 2016.The UNESCO resolution creating the day was pushed by African civil society groups seeking greater information transparency. Currently only 17 African Union me mber states have adopted national right to information laws\, and groups like Open Government Partnership hope that the recognition of the right to information will “provide an important platform for all stakeholders at national level to discuss the adoption and effective implementation of national right to information laws in line with continental and international standards and obligations.” However\, African civil society groups like MISA Zimbabwe have noted that states like Zimbabwe which do have Right to Information laws still have a long way to go to ensure they improve governance. DESCRIPTION:The World Tourism Day is celebrated on September 27\, 2023. September 27 was chosen as on that day in 1970\, the Statutes of the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) were adopted. \nTourism is one of the world’s most important economic sectors. It employs one in every ten people on Earth and provides livelihoods to hundreds of millions more. For some countries\, it can represent over 20 percent of their GDP. It allows people to experience some of the world’s cultural and natural riches and brings people closer to each other\, highlighting our common humanity. Tourism is an essential pillar of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals\, especially goals 8\, 12\, and 14. It serves as a first entry point to the world of work\, especially for women\, youth\, migrant workers\, and rural populations in developing and least developed countries (LDCs). Women represent a majority of the tourism sector workforce\, while half of that workforce is under 25 years of age. Moreover\, in many parts of the world\, the protection of biodiversity and conservation rely heavily on the tourism sector and the revenue it generates. \nThe constant growth of the tourism sector during the last six decades reflects more progressive access to tourism thanks to the decline in the cost of transport and the world-wide growth of the middle classes. The recognition of the right to holidays in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights\, and the improved adoption of labor rights in many countries have also supported its development. These factors also serve as a backdrop for the resilience shown by tourism in recent years. The sector has experienced almost uninterrupted growth despite challenges such as the global economic crisis and natural disasters. \nThe many important contributions of tourism encouraged the UNWTO to institute World Tourism Day in a meeting that took place in Spain\, commencing the first celebration of the observance in the year 1980. This date was chosen to coincide with an important milestone in world tourism: the 10th anniversary of the adoption of the UNWTO Statutes on 27 September 1970. Afterwards\, during its 70th session in 2015\, the United Nations General Assembly designated 2017 as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development (resolution A/RES/70/193)\, in which it encouraged support for sustainable tourism as a means of promoting and accelerating sustainable development\, especially poverty eradication. \nLinks:\nWorld Tourism Day

DESCRIPTION:The European Day of Languages is observed on 26 September\, as proclaimed by the Council of Europe on 6 December 2001\, at the end of the European Year of Languages (2001)\, which had been jointly organised by the Council of Europe and the European Union. \nIts aim is to encourage language learning across Europe. The general objectives of the European Day of Languages are to: \n\nAlert the public to the importance of language learning\, diversity and the range of languages learned in order to increase plurilingualism and intercultural understanding\nPromote the rich linguistic and cultural diversity of Europe\nEncourage lifelong language learning in and out of school\n\nIn keeping with these rules\, people\, young and old\, are encouraged to take up a language or to take special pride in their existing language skills. Also\, those responsible for providing access to language learning are encouraged to make it easier for people to learn a range of languages\, and to support policy initiatives to promote languages. There is also an emphasis on learning a language other than English. On the occasion of the day\, a range of events are organised across Europe\, including those for children\, television and radio programmes\, language classes and conferences. The events are not organised by the Council of Europe or the European Union nor do they allocate special funding (i.e. apart from their existing language programmes) for the day. Member states and potential partners are given a free hand to organise activities. To coordinate the activities organised at the national level\, the Council of Europe asks participating countries to nominate “National Relay Persons” for the day. DESCRIPTION:The General Assembly commemorates 26 September as the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons\, this Day provides an occasion for the world community to reaffirm its commitment to global nuclear disarmament as a priority. \nIt provides an opportunity to educate the public – and their leaders – about the real benefits of eliminating such weapons\, and the social and economic costs of perpetuating them. Achieving global nuclear disarmament is one of the oldest goals of the United Nations. It was the subject of the General Assembly’s first resolution in 1946\, which established the Atomic Energy Commission\, which was dissolved in 1952\, with a mandate to make specific proposals for the control of nuclear energy and the elimination of atomic weapons and all other major weapons adaptable to mass destruction. The United Nations has been at the forefront of many major diplomatic efforts to advance nuclear disarmament since. In 1959\, the General Assembly endorsed the objective of general and complete disarmament. In 1978\, the first Special Session of the General Assembly Devoted to Disarmament further recognized that nuclear disarmament should be the priority objective in the field of disarmament. Every United Nations Secretary-General has actively promoted this goal. \nThe General Assembly declared the International Day in December 2013\, in its resolution 68/32 as a follow-up to the high-level meeting of the General Assembly on nuclear disarmament held on 26 September 2013\, in New York. This was the latest in a series of efforts by the General Assembly to raise public awareness and to seek deeper engagement on nuclear disarmament matters. In 2009\, the General Assembly had declared 29 August as the International Day against Nuclear Tests (resolution 64/35). In resolution 68/32\, the General Assembly called for the “urgent commencement of negotiations in the Conference on Disarmament of a comprehensive convention on nuclear weapons to prohibit their possession\, development\, production\, acquisition\, testing\, stockpiling\, transfer and use or threat of use\, and to provide for their destruction.” \nIn 2014\, in its resolution 69/58\, the General Assembly further expressed its desire to commemorate the Day\, and requested the Secretary-General and the President of the General Assembly to make all arrangements necessary to commemorate the International Day and promote it\, including by convening an annual meeting of the Assembly to provide a platform for the promotion of these activities. The General Assembly repeated these requests and call in subsequent years in resolutions  70/34\, 71/71\, 72/251\, 73/40\, 74/54\, 75/45\, 76/36\, 77/47 and 78/27. The International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons has been observed annually since 2014. Pursuant to the resolutions of the General Assembly\, Member States\, the United Nations system and civil society\, including non-governmental organizations\, academia\, parliamentarians\, the mass media and individuals are encouraged to commemorate and promote the International Day through enhancing public awareness and education about the threat posed to humanity by nuclear weapons and the necessity for their total elimination. To observe the International Day\, the United Nations is supporting events both in New York and Geneva. United Nations Information Centres around the world are encouraged to raise awareness to the observance of International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons. \nYet\, today nearly around 12\,100 nuclear weapons remain. Countries possessing such weapons have well-funded\, long-term plans to modernize their nuclear arsenals. More than half of the world’s population still lives in countries that either have such weapons or are members of nuclear alliances. While the number of deployed nuclear weapons has appreciably declined since the height of the Cold War\, not one nuclear weapon has been physically destroyed pursuant to a treaty. In addition\, no nuclear disarmament negotiations are currently underway. Meanwhile\, the doctrine of nuclear deterrence persists as an element in the security policies of all possessor states and many of their allies. The international arms-control framework that contributed to international security since the Cold War\, acted as a brake on the use of nuclear weapons and advanced nuclear disarmament\, has come under increasing strain. Most recently\, on 2 August 2019\, the United States’ withdrawal spelled the end of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty\, through with the United States and the Russian Federation had previously committed to eliminating an entire class of nuclear missiles. \nFrustration has been growing amongst Member States regarding what is perceived as the slow pace of nuclear disarmament. This frustration has been put into sharper focus with growing concerns about the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of the use of even a single nuclear weapon\, let alone a regional or global nuclear war. Commemorating this Day at the United Nations is especially important\, given its universal membership and its long experience in grappling with nuclear disarmament issues.
