DESCRIPTION:Climate change enhanced intensity of Hurricane Melissa\, according to the World Weather Attribution-study WWA scientific report No. 76 (WWA). \nEarly on October 28th\, Hurricane Melissa made landfall on the southern coast of Jamaica as a Category 5 storm on the Saffir–Simpson scale\, bringing extreme winds\, torrential rainfall\, and life-threatening storm surges to coastal areas. The following day\, Melissa weakened to a Category 3 hurricane before striking Cuba\, while also bringing heavy rain and flooding to the neighbouring countries of the Dominican Republic and Haiti. While it will likely take weeks to fully assess the extent of the damage\, it is already clear that Melissa led to widespread destruction and severe disruption to critical infrastructure\, including washed-out roads\, damaged water systems\, power outages\, and communication failures. At least 28 people have been confirmed dead in Jamaica at the time of writing (Jamaican Government\, 2025)\, with at least another 31 fatalities reported in Haiti and two confirmed deaths in the Dominican Republic (BBC\, 2025)\, leading to a total of 61 deaths (4th November 2025) across the affected Caribbean islands. Agricultural losses have been extensive\, with crops destroyed and approximately 25\,000 people were displaced and seeking refuge in emergency shelters in Jamaica\, 6\,000 of which are still in shelters a week after the hurricane hit (BBC\, 2025). In Cuba\, 241 communities were still without access to communication at the end of the week\, affecting more than 140\,000 (Reuters\, 2025). The loss of communication and weather monitoring systems\, including radar installations\, has made it difficult to accurately estimate the total rainfall or the full scale of the damage caused by Hurricane Melissa. \nThe influence of climate change on tropical cyclones is more complex compared to other types of extreme weather events as impacts are driven by both heavy rainfall and extreme winds. In addition\, the surrounding conditions\, in particular the sea surface temperatures in the tropical Atlantic\, are crucial for the formation of hurricanes. Here\, scientists from Jamaica\, Cuba\, the Dominican Republic\, United States\, United Kingdom\, Sweden and the Netherlands\, use several approaches to investigate the influence of climate change on different aspects of hurricane Melissa\, following the same approach as with Hurricane Helene. For the assessment of the role of climate change in the heavy rainfall\, we divide the most impacted region into two subregions: Jamaica\, where Melissa made landfall and caused two days of extreme rainfall\, following three days of heavy rainfall before the landfall; and the Eastern part of Cuba (figure 1). In both regions we assess the 5-days of heaviest rainfall. To study the conditions that formed and fuelled Melissa\, the role of climate change in the high sea surface temperatures that fueled the storm were analysed\, and in “potential intensity”\, a metric that combines sea surface temperature\, air temperature and air humidity data to estimate maximum hurricane wind speeds. \nLinks:\nClimate change enhanced intensity of Hurricane Melissa\, testing limits of adaptation in Jamaica and eastern Cuba

DESCRIPTION:United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) ‘Emissions Gap Report 2025: Off Target‘ finds that available new climate pledges under the Paris Agreement have only slightly lowered global temperature rise over the course of this century\, leaving the world heading for a serious escalation of climate risks and damages. \n\nThe sixteenth edition of the Emissions Gap Report finds that global warming projections over this century\, based on full implementation of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs)\, are now 2.3-2.5°C\, while those based on current policies are 2.8°C. This compares to 2.6-2.8°C and 3.1°C in last year’s report. However\, methodological updates account for 0.1°C of the improvement\, and the upcoming withdrawal of the US from the Paris Agreement will cancel another 0.1°C\, meaning that the new NDCs themselves have barely moved the needle. Nations remain far from meeting the Paris Agreement goal to limit warming to well-below 2°C\, while pursuing efforts to stay below 1.5°C. Reductions to annual emissions of 35 per cent and 55 per cent\, compared with 2019 levels\, are needed in 2035 to align with the Paris Agreement 2°C and 1.5°C pathways\, respectively. Given the size of the cuts needed\, the short time available to deliver them and a challenging political climate\, a higher exceedance of 1.5°C will happen\, very likely within the next decade. The report finds that this overshoot must be limited through faster and bigger reductions in greenhouse gas emissions to minimize climate risks and damages and keep returning to 1.5°C by 2100 within the realms of possibility – although doing so will be extremely challenging. Every fraction of a degree avoided means lower losses for people and ecosystems\, lower costs\, and less reliance on uncertain carbon dioxide removal techniques to return to 1.5°C by 2100. Since the adoption of the Paris Agreement ten years ago\, temperature predictions have fallen from 3-3.5°C. The required low-carbon technologies to deliver big emission cuts are available. Wind and solar energy development is booming\, lowering deployment costs. This means the international community can accelerate climate action\, should they choose to do so. DESCRIPTION:Europe’s Elite Emit More Carbon in a Week than Someone from the Bottom Half Does in a Year. \nEurope’s wealthiest are driving the bloc’s emissions while ordinary Europeans make the steepest cuts\, according to new Oxfam research published ahead of COP30. This research also comes amidst the EU watering down its own climate ambition. The report\, “Climate Plunder: How a powerful few Europeans are locking the world into a climate disaster”\, reveals that a person from Europe’s richest 0.1% produces as much carbon in a week than someone from the bottom 50% of Europeans does in a year. The same group of Europeans – approximately 450\,000 people\, equivalent to the population of Estonia’s capital\, Tallinn – emit 53 times more carbon than someone from Europe’s bottom half. Most Europeans belong to the richest 10% globally\, a group responsible for around half of the world’s emissions. At a global level\, if everyone emitted like the richest 0.1%\, the world’s remaining carbon budget – the amount of carbon that can be emitted while avoiding climate breakdown – would be used up in less than 3 weeks. At the same time\, the carbon emissions of Europe’s wealthiest are on the rise. Between 1990 and 2022\, EU emissions fell by about 21%\, almost entirely due to cuts by the majority of Europeans. The bottom half of Europeans reduced their emissions by 27% and the middle 40% by 23%. \nMeanwhile\, the richest 0.1% increased theirs by 14%. “The research is clear. Europe’s wealthiest are in the driving seat of this climate crisis\, while the rest carry the cost. Yet\, instead of standing firm on its climate commitments\, the EU is bending towards short-term business interests under the banner of competitiveness. Real innovation should accelerate climate action\, not serve as an excuse to delay it”\, said Julie Bos\, Oxfam EU climate expert. The super-rich are not only overconsuming carbon but are also investing in and profiting from the most polluting corporations. The average European billionaire’s investments generate 2.4 million tonnes of carbon a year\, equivalent to flying around the world 12\,000 times in a private jet. Globally\, almost 60% of billionaire investments are classified as being in high climate impact sectors such as oil or mining\, meaning their investments emit two and a half times more than an average investment in the S&P Global 1\,200. The emissions of the investment portfolios of just 308 billionaires totals more than the combined emissions of 118 countries. The research shows that to align with EU’s Paris Agreement pledge of 1.5°C\, a person from the EU’s bottom 50% would need to half their emissions. Het NKS-programma heeft als doel het waarnemen en de modellering van stikstof in Nederland verder te ontwikkelen en te verbeteren. Het NKS satellietonderzoek beschreven in dit rapport is uitgevoerd in de jaren 2023-2024. Er is gebruikgemaakt van ammoniak waarnemingen van de CrIS- en IASI-instrumenten\, en stikstofdioxide waarnemingen van het TROPOMI-instrument. Het werk is uitgevoerd door wetenschappers van TNO\, KNMI\, RIVM en de universiteiten van Leiden en Wageningen. Storm Benjamin bereikt als eerste het zuidwesten\, in de loop van de ochtend tot in de nacht naar vrijdag breidt de storm zich over de rest van het land uit. In de rest van het land geldt daarom code geel. Door de wind kunnen er bomen omwaaien en is er kans op (materiële) schade en hinder voor verkeer en openbaar vervoer. Vrijdag neemt de wind langzaam af\, het laatst in het Waddengebied. De windstoten komen uit een west tot noordwest richting. In de westelijke kustgebieden zijn zeer zware windstoten van 100-120 km/uur mogelijk. Elders worden zware windstoten van 80-90 km/uur verwacht en dieper landinwaarts van ca. 80 km/uur. \n  \n \nBelgië:\nDe zich verder uitdiepende stormkern “Benjamin” verplaatst zich via het Kanaal naar de Noordzee. In de voormiddag verwacht het KMI in de meeste streken in België rukwinden tussen 60 en 75 km/u. DESCRIPTION:The 2025 Global Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) report “Overlapping Hardships: Poverty and Climate Hazards”\, released ahead of the COP30 climate summit in Brazil\, presents new evidence that the climate crisis is reshaping global poverty. \nBy overlaying climate hazard data with multidimensional poverty data for the first time\, the findings reveal a world where poverty is not just a standalone socio-economic issue but one that is deeply interlinked with planetary pressures and instability. The 2025 MPI report\, for the first time\, overlays data on climate hazards and multidimensional poverty to assess how exposed poor people are to environmental shocks. The report highlights that most people in poverty are exposed to at least one climate hazard; many confront several at the same time. By the end of this century\, the countries projected to face the steepest temperature increases are those already burdened with higher levels of multidimensional poverty. This year’s update of the global MPI database includes new data from 13 countries. It presents MPI data from 109 countries\, along with subnational estimates covering 1\,359 regions across 101 countries. The results show that 1.1 billion of 6.3 billion people live in acute multidimensional poverty\, over half of them children. DESCRIPTION:Orkaan Melissa (Hurricane Melissa) was een actieve\, langzaam voortbewegende en extreem krachtige tropische cycloon in de Caribische Zee\, die eind oktober 2025 over Jamaica en het oosten van Cuba richting Atlantische Oceaan trok. \nMelissa is de dertiende storm met een naam\, de vijfde orkaan en de derde orkaan van categorie 5 van het Atlantische orkaanseizoen van 2025. Het is de sterkste orkaan van het seizoen (dat op zijn einde loopt) en was de sterkste tropische cycloon van 2025 wereldwijd tot dan toe. Het was ook de achtste meest intense Atlantische orkaan geregistreerd. Melissa is ontstaan uit een tropische golf waarvan de ontwikkeling voor het eerst werd gemonitord op 16 oktober 2025. De golf ontstond in West-Afrika\, reisde van de centrale Atlantische Oceaan naar de Bovenwindse Eilanden en bewoog zich vervolgens snel westwaarts naar de Caribische Zee\, waar hij vertraagde en zich op 16 oktober ontwikkelde tot de tropische storm Melissa. Zwakke stuurstromen en matige windschering zorgden ervoor dat Melissa de volgende dagen slingerend en ongeorganiseerd bleef\, terwijl ze langzaam naar het noordwesten trok. Uiteindelijk raakt Melissa beter georganiseerd\, en van 25 tot 27 oktober intensiveerde ze snel tot een orkaan van categorie 5. Op 29 oktober kwam de orkaan aan land op de zuidkust van Jamaica. Melissa was de zwaarste orkaan ooit op het eiland gemeten. De orkaan richtte grote schade aan\, waarbij 19 mensen om het leven kwamen. De havenstad Black River is voor 90% verwoest en veel wegen op het eiland zijn onbegaanbaar geworden. Haïti lag niet in het pad van de orkaan\, maar werd wel dagenlang geteisterd door regenbuien. Hier vielen circa 25 slachtoffers\, vooral door overstromingen. Na Jamaica trok de orkaan over het oosten van Cuba. Melissa was ondertussen afgezwakt tot een categorie 3 orkaan. Op Cuba werden ruim 700.000 inwoners geevacueerd. Op 30 oktober trok de tot categorie 1 afgezwakte orkaan over de Bahamas. DESCRIPTION:In 2015\, after years of failed negotiations\, the world celebrated a landmark achievement: the signing of the Paris Agreement. \nThis historic accord set a global goal of “holding the increase in the global average temperature to well below 2°C above pre-industrial levels and pursuing efforts to limit the temperature increase to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels\, recognizing that this would significantly reduce the risks and impacts of climate change”. Unlike its predecessor\, the Kyoto Protocol\, the Paris Agreement was ratified by nearly every country in the world\, including the largest past and present emitters\, establishing a legally binding framework to protect people and ecosystems from the dangers of unmitigated climate change. In the Paris Agreement\, countries are allowed to determine for themselves how much they will reduce their emissions\, through what are known as Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs)\, and to develop their adaptation plans. Most countries have submitted and updated their NDCs over time\, and some emission reductions have been achieved; however\, a significant gap remains between current pledges and the emissions cuts required to limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C this century. DESCRIPTION:Kabinet na kabinet heeft gefaald in het waarmaken van grote groene beloftes voor 2030. Hoe willen partijen dat na de aankomende verkiezingen doen? \nWe willen allemaal een goede toekomst – voor onze kinderen\, voor elkaar\, voor de aarde waarop we leven. Maar de realiteit is hard: wereldwijd verliezen mensen hun huizen en oogsten door overstromingen\, droogte en branden. Ook in Europa: duizenden doden door hitte\, bossen in vlammen. Te midden van de escalerende de klimaatcrisis moet het komende kabinet ongekend hard aan de bak om een kans te houden op het behalen van de groene ambities en verplichtingen voor 2030. Aan het einde van de volgende kabinetsperiode moet Nederland ruim een kwart minder uitstoten dan nu en moet het aandeel hernieuwbare energie verdubbelen. Des te belangrijker dat partijen transparant zijn over wat de burger hiervan gaat merken. Welke plannen hebben politieke partijen om dit haalbaar te maken? SUMMARY:Dag voor het Behoud van de Ozonlaag / Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer 2025
DESCRIPTION:De ozonlaag is een dun laagje gas dat ligt tussen de 15 en 50 kilometer hoogte en als een ring om onze aarde zit met als belangrijkste eigenschap; het beschermt ons tegen de schadelijke straling (ultraviolette straling) die afkomstig is van de zon. \nZonder de ozonlaag is leven op aarde niet mogelijk. Door vervuiling wordt de ozonlaag steeds dunner. Hierdoor lopen mensen meer kans op huidkanker en staar. Om gezamenlijk te proberen het ozongat niet groter te laten worden werd op 22 maart 1985 het Verdrag van Wenen aangenomen dat door 28 landen ondertekend. Op 16 september 1987 heeft dit geleid tot het opstellen van het Montrealprotocol (Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer). Het is geratificeerd door elke lidstaat van de Verenigde Naties (197); de Europese Unie\, alle 193 leden van de Verenigde Naties\, Vaticaanstad\, Cookeilanden en Niue. Het Montrealprotocol laat zien dat mondiaal afspraken maken over het milieubeleid duidelijk zin heeft. We moeten nog wel een tijd wachten voordat de ozonlaag helemaal hersteld is maar vermoedelijk zal tegen 2050 de ozonlaag hersteld zijn tot het niveau van 1960. Plak er nog een 20 tot 30 jaar aan vast en dan moet de ozonlaag toch praktisch hersteld zijn. DESCRIPTION:Аir pollution is the single greatest environmental risk to human health and one of the main avoidable causes of death and disease globally. \nEvery breath matters. Every year\, air pollution kills 8.1 million people. From the moment we’re born\, we are in a race for clean air — but right now\, we’re falling behind. 93% of the world’s children breathe air that harms their development. Harm starts before birth\, and it never really stops. We’re all in this race. And the clock is ticking. This Clean Air Day\, join the call for change. Clean air is not a privilege\, it’s a human right. Our first contact with the world. What we inhale 12 times a minute. It keeps us alive or poisons us. 99% of us breathe polluted air. We can’t take it anymore. Air pollution is the biggest environmental health risk of our time. It also exacerbates climate change\, causes economic losses\, and reduces agricultural productivity. It knows no borders – everyone has a responsibility to protect our atmosphere and ensure healthy air for all. By collaborating across borders\, sectors\, and silos\, we can reduce air pollution through collective investments of time\, resources\, and efforts. \nParticularly in developing countries\, air pollution disproportionately affects women\, children and the elderly\, especially in low-income populations as they are often exposed to high levels of ambient air pollution and indoor air pollution from cooking and heating with wood fuel and kerosene. Аir pollution is a global problem with far-reaching impacts owing to its transport over long distances. In the absence of aggressive intervention\, the number of premature deaths resulting from ambient air pollution is estimated to be on track to increase by more than 50 per cent by 2050. Society bears a high cost of air pollution due to the negative impacts on the economy\, work productivity\, healthcare costs and tourism\, among others. Hence\, the economic benefits of investing in air pollution control cannot be overestimated\, and it must be understood that there is also an economic rationale to act and that cost-effective solutions exist to address air pollution. \nPoor air quality is a challenge in the context of sustainable development for all countries\, in particular in cities and urban areas in developing countries\, with levels of air pollution that are higher than the limits set out in the World Health Organization air quality guidelines. Some air pollutants\, such as black carbon\, methane and ground-level ozone\, are also short-lived climate pollutants and are responsible for a significant portion of air pollution-related deaths\, as well as impacts on crops and hence food security\, so their reduction has co-benefits for the climate. UN Member States recognize the need to substantially reduce the number of deaths and illnesses from hazardous chemicals and air\, water and soil pollution and contamination by 2030\, as well as to reduce the adverse per capita environmental impact of cities\, including by paying special attention to air quality and municipal and other waste management by 2030. \nClean air is important for the health and day-to-day lives of people\, while air pollution is the single greatest environmental risk to human health and one of the main avoidable causes of death and disease globally. Air pollution disproportionately affects women\, children and older persons\, and also has a negative impact on ecosystems. Today\, the international community acknowledges that improving air quality can enhance climate change mitigation and that climate change mitigation efforts can improve air quality. Encouraged by the increasing interest of the international community in clean air\, and emphasizing the need to make further efforts to improve air quality\, including reducing air pollution\, to protect human health\, the General Assembly decided to designate 7 September as the Day of Clean Air for blue skies. \nLinks:\nDay of Clean Air for blue skies
