DESCRIPTION:Europa heeft een groene lijst\, de taxonomie: pensioenfondsen en banken kunnen daarop zien wat een groene investering is en wat niet. \nZo moet er geld vrijkomen voor klimaatoplossingen\, zoals snelle treinen. Maar de lucht- en scheepvaartlobby heeft de EU bespeeld: nieuwe vliegtuigen en schepen komen ook op de lijst. Zo promoot de EU groei van de lucht- en scheepvaart\, terwijl dat juist een leefbare toekomst om zeep helpt. Als het aan de Europese Unie ligt\, komen de nieuwste vliegtuigen en schepen op hun groene lijst. Zo moedigen ze pensioenfondsen en banken aan om ons geld in een vervuilende\, fossiele vloot te stoppen. Dit is greenwashing op het hoogste niveau. Een coalitie van klimaat- en juridische organisaties en mensen door heel Europa komt in actie en starten een procedure om de Europese Commissie te dwingen opnieuw naar hun besluit te kijken. Schrappen ze vliegtuigen en schepen niet van de lijst? DESCRIPTION:Op zaterdag 30 december 2023 vanaf 12:00 blokkeert Extinction Rebellion de A10 ter hoogte van het voormalig ING-hoofdkantoor “De Schoen” in Amsterdam met de eis: ING\, stop direct met alle financiering van\, en dienstverlening aan\, de fossiele industrie. \nDe A10-blokkade wordt mede-georganiseerd door het campagneteam dat ook verantwoordelijk was voor de A12-blokkades. Extinction Rebellion zal de A10 niet vrijgeven voordat ING stopt met het financieren van klimaatontwrichting. Sinds het Klimaatakkoord van Parijs in 2015\, dat ING zegt te onderschrijven\, heeft de bank de klimaat- en ecologische crisis met bijna 60 miljard euro gefinancierd. Klimaatrampen volgen elkaar in hoog tempo op\, per dag moeten 20.000 kinderen op de vlucht slaan voor extreem weer. Ondanks toenemende bosbranden\, hittegolven\, hongersnood en overstromingen ging het in 2022 nog steeds om 5\,2 miljard dollar\, zo maakte de internationale onderzoeksorganisatie BankTrack bekend. ING is daarmee de grootste fossiele geldschieter van Nederland. Hiermee jaagt ING de klimaat- en ecologische crisis iedere dag verder aan en vormt zo een bedreiging voor de veiligheid\, welzijn en volksgezondheid\, zowel in Nederland als daarbuiten. \nDe A10 blokkade wordt mede-georganiseerd door het campagneteam dat de StopFossieleSubsidie blokkades heeft georganiseerd in Den Haag. Tijdens deze campagne heeft XR 35 A12-blokkades georganiseerd\, waarbij in totaal meer dan 12.000 mensen zijn gearresteerd. De acties hebben een aanzienlijke verschuiving veroorzaakt in de publieke opinie. Drie kwart van de Nederlanders staat nu achter het uitfaseren van fossiele subsidies en maar liefst een derde staat zelfs achter het per direct stoppen ervan\, zoals de eis van XR luidt. Met de aangenomen Tweede Kamer-motie over scenario’s voor de afbouw van fossiele subsidies\, zijn de A12-blokkades opgeschort. Het afwisselen van de winter met de andere seizoenen wordt veroorzaakt door de schuine stand van de aardas. \nIn de winter staat op het noordelijk halfrond de aardas van de zon af en in de zomer juist naar de zon toe. Op het zuidelijk halfrond is dit omgekeerd\, zodat de winter zich daar juist afspeelt tijdens de zomer van het noordelijk halfrond. Het meest kenmerkend aan de winter is hierdoor\, behalve de in vergelijking met andere seizoenen lage temperaturen\, de korte dagduur. De astronomische winter begint op het noordelijk halfrond rond 21 december. De zon staat dan ’s middags aan de Steenbokskeerkring loodrecht aan de hemel. De naam is afgeleid van het sterrenbeeld Steenbok dat rond midden december begint. Deze dag valt daarom ook samen met de kortste dag op het noordelijk halfrond. De astronomische winter eindigt meestal op 20 maart\, soms op 21 maart\, wanneer de zon ’s middags aan de evenaar loodrecht aan de hemel staat (equinox). Hierna begint de lente. Op het zuidelijk halfrond begint de astronomische winter rond 21 juni\, wanneer de zon ’s middags aan de Kreeftskeerkring loodrecht aan de hemel staat. De naam is afgeleid van het sterrenbeeld Kreeft die rond midden juni begint op het zuidelijk halfrond en eindigt meestal op 23 september\, soms op 22 september wanneer de zon ’s middags aan de evenaar loodrecht aan de hemel staat. \nLinks:\nWinter

DESCRIPTION:Issued annually since 2006\, the Arctic Report Card is a timely and peer-reviewed source for clear\, reliable and concise environmental information on the current state of different components of the Arctic environmental system relative to historical records. \nNOAA’s 2023 Arctic Report Card documents new records showing that human-caused warming of the air\, ocean and land is affecting people\, ecosystems and communities across the Arctic region\, which is heating up faster than any other part of the world. Summer surface air temperatures during 2023 were the warmest ever observed in the Arctic\, while the highest point on Greenland’s ice sheet experienced melting for only the fifth time in the 34-year record. Overall\, it was the Arctic’s sixth-warmest year on record. Sea ice extent continued to decline\, with the last 17 Septembers now registering as the lowest on record. These records followed two years when unprecedented high abundance of sockeye salmon in western Alaska’s Bristol Bay contrasted with record-low Chinook and chum salmon that led to fishery closures on the Yukon River and other Bering Sea tributaries. “The overriding message from this year’s report card is that the time for action is now\,” said Rick Spinrad\, Ph.D.\, NOAA administrator. “NOAA and our federal partners have ramped up our support and collaboration with state\, tribal and local communities to help build climate resilience. At the same time\, we as a nation and global community must dramatically reduce greenhouse gas emissions that are driving these changes.” The annual Arctic Report Card\, now in its 18th year\, is the work of 82 authors from 13 countries. DESCRIPTION:When the Paris Agreement was signed\, in December 2015\, the world was projected to reach the 1.5°Celsius (C) threshold by March 2045. \nToday\, on the 8th anniversary of its signature\, we risk breaching that benchmark by February 2034\, according to data extrapolation based on Copernicus Climate Change Service data. But many other indicators have turned red since the Paris Agreement. Time is shrinking if we want to keep the global temperatures below 1.5°C compared with the pre-industrial average. An application developed by C3S shows it very clearly. In 2015\, when COP delegates signed the Paris accord\, our data estimated that the global temperature was 0.98°C above the pre-industrial average and would have breached the 1.5°C threshold in 2045. Today\, as delegates address the first global stocktake\, a critical inventory of the Paris Agreement actions and commitments to assess the progress made\, the same data estimates that we have reached a global average of 1.25°C and will be at 1.5°C over pre-industrial levels in 2034. DESCRIPTION:The Global Tipping Points Report\, launched at COP28 on 6 December 2023\, is an authoritative assessment of the risks and opportunities of both negative and positive tipping points in the Earth system and society. \nGlobal Tipping Points is led by the University of Exeter’s Global Systems Institute with the support of more than 200 researchers from over 90 organisations in 26 countries. The 21st century has already witnessed extraordinary\, abrupt and potentially irreversible changes in the world around us. With global warming now at around 1.2°C above the pre-industrial level\, massive coral reef die-off events are occurring\, the Amazon rainforest is suffering droughts\, large regions of permafrost are thawing\, and part of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet may be irreversibly retreating\, to name but a few of the tumultuous changes happening in the Earth system. In the last decade\, climate impacts have escalated\, harming the economy and resulting in  insurance being withdrawn from some of the most vulnerable communities. The global financial crisis of 2007-2008 and ensuing Great Recession have shown us how fragile the economy can be\, and the COVID-19 pandemic gave us all a profound lesson in abrupt\, cascading change. At the same time\, we have started to see evidence of accelerating social and technological change towards sustainability\, including numerous political declarations of a ‘climate emergency’ and exponential growth of renewable energy deployment. \nAll of this experience challenges a worldview that many of us were brought up with – to see the world like a machine. The world is not behaving in a linear fashion. Instead\, our expectations of smooth\, predictable and reversible changes are being confronted with a reality of abrupt\, unexpected and irreversible ones. We wrote this report during 2023 against a backdrop of unprecedented climate extremes\, including severe heat waves across much of Asia\, massive loss of Antarctic seaice\, and Canadian forest fires way off the scale of even recent experience. The pace and scale of these events has attracted use of the term ‘tipping points’ which describes the phenomenon that occurs when a small change makes a big difference to a system. Tipping points in the Earth system are arguably the biggest risk we face in a changing world\, because they can lead to profound damages that are abrupt or irreversible – or both. The level of global warming that could trigger known climate tipping points is uncertain; there is little assessment of tipping point impacts and even less consideration of who or what is most vulnerable to those impacts. Yet we know enough to argue that any credible climate change risk assessment must consider the risks from climate tipping points – as they could profoundly affect the economy and societies. \nFurthermore\, while climate tipping points are often portrayed as ‘high-impact\, low-likelihood events’\, some are rapidly becoming ‘high-impact\, high-likelihood events’. The risks from anthropogenically triggered Earth system tipping points\, and our perception of them\, may in turn influence tipping points in human systems. These ‘social tipping points’ can take many forms – from the escalation of wars to the sudden uptake of new technologies. The global financial crisis and the COVID-19 pandemic demonstrated how undesirable impacts can cascade through our networked world. But this potential also exists for desirable impacts. The same feedback principles underlie both undesirable tipping points in the Earth system and those in human systems\, both desirable and undesirable. As experience starts to show how risks can cascade between the different realms of climate\, ecology and human society\, there is a growing sense that we are in a ‘polycrisis’. But experience has barely scratched the surface of what could occur as the impacts of global change – especially climate change – accelerate and accumulate. Hence\, there is an urgent need to assess how Earth system tipping points can impact human systems\, especially whether and how they could trigger undesirable social tipping points. This is essential information to enable mitigation of the worst impacts and to build resilience to impacts that cannot be avoided. \nGrowing recognition and knowledge of tipping point risks in turn begs the question of how best to govern those risks. Can our current institutions and processes deal with tipping point risks? Or do the unusual qualities of tipping points (abruptness\, irreversibility\, unpredictability\, and having large but unevenly distributed impacts) demand new governance approaches? Against this backdrop of profound risks\, the opportunities for creating and enabling ‘positive tipping points’ to accelerate action to tackle climate change\, biodiversity loss and other sustainability challenges are just starting to be widely recognised. They may offer the most credible way of achieving the acceleration of action that is required – by leveraging strongly reinforcing feedback processes that are self-propelling. When presented with such complexity and tumultuous change\, we cannot continue  looking at the world in an outdated way. We need an effective and comprehensive risk assessment of ‘negative’ tipping points; we need an opportunity analysis of realised and potential ‘positive’ tipping points; and we need to consider how to navigate both\, in a just way\, in the face of uncertainty. Last year there were even more: 636 fossil fuel lobbyists were granted access to COP27 in Sharm El-Sheikh. Whereas the negotiations should take place among UN member states\, the fossil fuel industry has the biggest delegation. They largely outnumber the presence of Indigenous people\, who are actually protecting 80% of Earth’s biodiversity. This year\, COP28 will take place in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates\, a oil-garchy with massive plans to expand fossil fuel extraction. And fossil fuel executives are literally taking control of COP28: it will be presided by Sultan Al Jaber\, the current CEO of the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company. Those driving and profiting from our planet’s destruction are now in charge of saving it. This is completely absurd. You wouldn’t invite tobacco companies to a global health summit. DESCRIPTION:Recognizing the important role of safe\, affordable\, accessible and sustainable transport systems for all in supporting sustainable economic growth\, improving the social welfare of people and enhancing international cooperation and trade among countries\, the General Assembly decided to declare 26 November as World Sustainable Transport Day. \nIt also noted the importance of cooperation in enhancing transport connectivity through an integrated intermodal transport system by developing quality\, reliable\, sustainable and resilient infrastructure\, exchanging best practices to optimize the development of interconnected highways\, roads\, streets\, railways\, waterways\, airways\, areas of modal transfer and ports\, and by encouraging transport infrastructure construction and operations to minimize consumption of energy\, land and other resources; generate lower emissions of greenhouse gases\, ozone-depleting substances and other pollutants and ensure a positive social impact. The Assembly invited stakeholders to mark World Sustainable Transport Day by means of education and the holding of events aimed at enhancing the knowledge of the public on sustainable transport issues\, in particular enhancing intermodal transport connectivity\, promoting environmentally friendly transportation\, developing socially inclusive transport infrastructure and other aspects of transport sustainability. Transport is vital for promoting connectivity\, trade\, economic growth and employment. Yet it is also implicated as a significant source of green-house gas emissions. Uitgerekend deze week waarschuwden de Verenigde Naties ervoor dat de aarde met 3 graden zal opwarmen\, een dubbel zo hoge opwarming als afgesproken in Parijs in 2015. De overweldigende wetenschappelijke consensus is dat de gevolgen van klimaatverandering al merkbaar zijn. En dat meer opwarming nog ergere gevolgen zal hebben. De rijkste 1 procent (77 miljoen mensen) bleek in 2019 verantwoordelijk voor 16 procent van de wereldwijde uitstoot door consumptie – meer dan alle uitstoot uit het wegverkeer. Die uitstoot doet de klimaatwinst van bijna een miljoen windmolens teniet\, en zal naar schatting 1\,3 miljoen hittegerelateerde extra sterfgevallen veroorzaken\, zegt Oxfam. Het rapport bewijst de klimaatontregeling en ongelijkheid in de wereld een vicieuze cirkel vormen\, zegt de ngo. Dat geldt ook voor de gevolgen van de klimaatcrisis: in landen met een grote ongelijkheid sterven zeven keer mensen door overstromingen. Regeringen moeten die dubbele crisis aanpakken door de buitensporige uitstoot van de superrijken te belasten\, zegt Oxfam\, en de opbrengsten in openbare diensten en klimaatactie te pompen. Een belasting van 60 procent op de inkomens van de rijkste 1 procent zou de uitstoot sterker verminderen dan de totale uitstoot van Groot-Brittannië. DESCRIPTION:As greenhouse gas emissions hit new highs\, temperature records tumble and climate impacts intensify\, the Emissions Gap Report 2023: Broken Record – Temperatures hit new highs\, yet world fails to cut emissions (again) finds that the world is heading for a temperature rise far above the Paris Agreement goals unless countries deliver more than they have promised. \nThe report is the 14th edition in a series that brings together many of the world’s top climate scientists to look at future trends in greenhouse gas emissions and provide potential solutions to the challenge of global warming. The report finds that there has been progress since the Paris Agreement was signed in 2015. Greenhouse gas emissions in 2030\, based on policies in place\, were projected to increase by 16 per cent at the time of the agreement’s adoption. Today\, the projected increase is 3 per cent. However\, predicted 2030 greenhouse gas emissions still must fall by 28 per cent for the Paris Agreement 2°C pathway and 42 per cent for the 1.5°C pathway. \nAs things stand\, fully implementing unconditional Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) made under the Paris Agreement would put the world on track for limiting temperature rise to 2.9°C above pre-industrial levels this century. Fully implementing conditional NDCs would lower this to 2.5°C. The report calls for all nations to accelerate economy-wide\, low-carbon development transformations. Countries with greater capacity and responsibility for emissions will need to take more ambitious action and support developing nations as they pursue low-emissions development growth. The report looks at how stronger implementation can increase the chances of the next round of NDCs\, due in 2025\, bringing down greenhouse gas emissions in 2035 to levels consistent with 2°C and 1.5°C pathways. SUMMARY:Stop coalonization - Stop Glencore
DESCRIPTION:Samen met vijf activisten uit Colombia en Peru organiseren Kappen met kolen en ING Fossielvrij een actie tegen de mensenrechtenschendingen van Glencore\, één van de grootste en meest verwoestende mijnbouwbedrijven ter wereld. \nZo is Glencore in Colombia onder meer verantwoordelijk voor het verleggen van rivieren en het vervuilen van drinkwater bij de kolenwinning. Inheemse gemeenschappen worden daardoor het hardst getroffen. Nederlandse banken en investeerders\, waaronder ING\, financieren deze KOOLONISATIE\, en ook Nederlandse havens spelen een grote rol in de doorvoer van Colombiaanse kolen. Wij eisen dat Nederlandse banken als ING hun verantwoordelijkheid nemen in een rechtvaardige transitie door hun invloed op Glencore aan te wenden en ze te dwingen tot verandering. Ook eisen wij dat de invoer van kolen uit Colombia per direct wordt stopgezet totdat deze gegarandeerd bloedkolenvrij zijn. Dit is de derde actie die Kappen met kolen samen met activisten uit Colombia organiseert. In april hielden we in samenwerking met SOMO en PAX een actie tegen bloedkolen in de Amsterdamse haven\, en in september vroegen we samen met FNV Mundial tijdens een A12-blokkade van Extinction Rebellion aandacht voor een rechtvaardige transitie. Als wij van kolen af willen\, hebben wij een verantwoordelijkheid naar de mensen die in bijvoorbeeld Zuid-Amerika in de kolenketen werken\, maar ook voor de schade die kolenwinning daar heeft aangericht – kolen waarmee we hier onze huizen verwarmen en onze industrie draaiende houden. \nKlimaatrechtvaardigheid en ecorechtvaardigheid gaan bij deze acties hand in hand\, en als de facto koloniserend land moeten wij onze verantwoordelijkheid nemen in een rechtvaardige transitie. Daarvoor is het van cruciaal belang dat we luisteren naar de mensen die dit van nabij meemaken en waarmee we onlosmakelijk zijn verbonden in een koloniserende en kapitalistische verhouding die ons rijker maakt en hen armer. De steenkool die Nederland financiert en importeert\, gaat ten koste van water\, lucht en leven aan de andere kant van de wereld. De actie zal op zaterdag 18 november plaatsvinden in het Prinses Amaliapark op de Zuidas\, bij de fontein. De Zuidas staat voor de gewetenloze investeerders die alleen naar rendement kijken en niet naar de humanitaire\, ecologische en klimaatgerelateerde schade dit tot gevolg heeft. We hebben specifiek deze plek gekozen omdat de fontein voor ons symbool staat voor het water dat Glencore steelt door het droogleggen en vervuilen van rivieren in Colombia en Peru. DESCRIPTION:Jaarlijks van 21 maart t/m 31 oktober spelen heel Nederland en Vlaanderen het Kampioenschap Tegelwippen\, iedereen kan meedoen door tegels te vervangen voor groen in zijn eigen (gevel)tuin. \nAlle gemeenten in Nederland kunnen meestrijden om ‘de Gouden Tegel’. De gemeente die per inwoner de meeste tegels verruilt voor groen\, wint. Geef je gewipte tegels op via dit formulier en ze worden bij je gemeente opgeteld. Heeft jouw gemeente zich niet aangemeld? Niet getreurd\, wippen kan altijd. Dan wip je mee voor de Tegelteller. Goed voor de biodiversiteit in de stad\, maar ook in de strijd tegen hittestress en waterproblemen. \nDe grote vraag is dus: wat doe je als (gevel)tuinbezitter als die tegels er eenmaal uit zijn? Alles begint bij de bodem. Onder de tegels komt meestal bouwzand tevoorschijn. En dat is bepaald geen goede tuinaarde. Het zand hoeft echt niet allemaal weg\, maar het is wel goed om er voldoende (biologische) compost door te mengen. Dan hebben de planten voeding en kan de bodem beter water vasthouden. Bij de keuze voor planten\, ga dan het liefst voor inheemse soorten. Dit zijn de soorten die in Nederland van nature groeien. Denk bijvoorbeeld aan het Ooievaarsbekje\, een prachtig plantje met mooi paarsige bloemen\, dat het prima doet in de stad. Zo geniet je niet alleen zelf van een nieuwe tuintje\, maar is het ook een blikvanger voor de buren\, en worden bijen en vogels er helemaal blij van. \nHet weer wordt steeds extremer. Hevige regenbuien en lange periodes van hitte en droogte volgen elkaar op. Daarbij krijgen we steeds vaker te maken met problemen als hittestress en wateroverlast\, omdat onze leefomgeving sterk is versteend. Al die stenen verkoelen niet op een hete dag en laten geen water door wanneer het regent. Dat regenwater kan dan het riool overbelasten of je kelder inlopen. DESCRIPTION:The report ‘The climate-changed child‘ builds on 2021’s Children’s Climate Risk Index and examines water scarcity and water vulnerability along with the critical actions the international community must take at COP28 to protect children against climate change. \nThe climate crisis is not just changing the planet – it is changing children. From the moment of conception until they grow into adulthood\, the health and development of children’s brains\, lungs\, immune systems and other critical functions are affected by the environment they grow up in. Geography does not protect against climate change; it is affecting children everywhere – even in in high-income countries – and the world is not doing nearly enough to protect them. Despite their unique vulnerability\, children have been either ignored or largely disregarded in the response to climate change. Only 2.4 per cent of climate finance from key multilateral climate funds support projects incorporating child-responsive activities. \nAs the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child has pointed out\, taking their rights and their views into account would lead to more ambitious and effective policies on environmental protection. And yet children have almost no formal role in climate policy and decisions\, and they are rarely considered in existing climate adaptation\, mitigation or finance plans and actions. Adapting essential services\, compensation for loss and damage\, disaster risk reduction\, early warning and increased investment in decarbonization can make the difference between life and death\, a future or disaster\, for the planet’s children. Governments have an obligation to ensure a clean\, healthy and sustainable environment to protect and fulfil children’s rights.
