SUMMARY:Energy Embargo Now to End the Genocide! No Environmental Justice without Palestinian Liberation!
DESCRIPTION:Israel’s genocide against 2.3 million Palestinians grinds on\, destroying Gaza and causing a catastrophic human and environmental disaster of untold proportions. \nOn the occasion of COP29\, we call on all civil society organisations at COP29 and around the world to mobilise urgently to impose an energy embargo on Israel to stop the genocide in Palestine and put an end to Israel’s apartheid\, illegal occupation and ecocide. At least 45\,000 Palestinians in Gaza have now been killed\, with estimates that the death toll is likely far larger. Many thousands are buried under the rubble of their homes\, with hundreds of thousands of others suffering from severe physical injuries and mental scars\, and most of Gaza’s population deliberately starved and undernourished\, forcibly displaced in tents. The situation is more horrifying in the north of Gaza where Israel is committing massacres and ethnic cleansing. Many thousands more are being held in Israel’s network of torture camps\, subject to the most barbaric treatment imaginable. This shocking human cost has been combined with an appalling ecological destruction\, intentionally inflicted on Gaza to make it uninhabitable. According to UN human experts\, Israel’s genocide has also included “domicide\, urbicide\, scholasticide\, medicide\, cultural genocide and\, more recently\, ecocide.” \nSince the start of the genocide\, more than 76% of Gaza’s agricultural land has been damaged or destroyed\, and there has been extensive damage to soil\, green houses\, water wells\, farms and animal shelters. Israel’s genocidal war has emitted hundreds of thousands of tonnes of CO2 emissions\, equal to 31\,000 kilotons of coal – enough to power about 15.8 coal-fired power plants for a year. During the first 120 days alone\, this produced more CO2 than the annual emissions of 26 countries and territories. The CO2 emissions that will be produced during the rebuilding of Gaza’s devastated urban landscape will produce a figure higher than that of over 130 countries. Chemicals from weapons such as white phosphorus have also contaminated the air\, and likely impacted agricultural land and soil. Meanwhile in the West Bank\, the Israeli occupation has continued its colonization and theft of Palestinian land and natural resources for illegal settlements\, killing approximately 800 Palestinians and injuring thousands of others in the process. This is despite the International Court of Justice declaring in July 2024 that Israel’s entire occupation is illegal and must be brought to an end. \nThe international community’s failure to end state\, corporate and institutional complicity in Israel’s genocide and underlying system of apartheid – and to impose legal\, targeted sanctions to stop Israel’s war machine – has emboldened it with a sense of complete impunity\, giving it carte blanche to spread its destruction and massacres beyond Palestine to the people of Lebanon. In just a few weeks\, Israel killed more than 2\,000 Lebanese citizens\, injuring more than 10\,000 and wantonly destroying thousands of homes and entire villages. It is clear from Israel’s bombardment that it intends to spread its genocidal pattern of destruction – targeting hospitals\, medical staff and civilian infrastructure – to the people of Lebanon. Israel’s use of white phosphorus and cluster munitions has devastated agricultural production in south Lebanon\, and its direct attack on the Litani water conveyance system demonstrates that such destruction is intentional. \nIsrael’s plans are now clear as day: to ethnically cleanse the entirety of Palestine and the south of Lebanon of their indigenous peoples\, a continuation of the ongoing Nakba that has gone on\, unabated\, since 1948 until the present day. In this context\, the international community’s delayed demand for a ceasefire in Gaza is meaningless unless backed up by concrete actions that can stop Israel’s genocidal war machine. The governments and corporations profiting from and supporting a financial system and socio-economic order destroying our planet\, indigenous lands and forcing millions of people into exile and poverty\, are the very ones complicit in powering and fuelling Israel’s genocidal machine. \nLinks:\nEnergy Embargo Now to End the Genocide!

Click image to read\nAccording to the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S)\, October 2024 was the second-warmest October globally\, after October 2023\, with an average ERA5 surface air temperature of 15.25°C\, 0.80°C above the 1991-2020 average for October. \nOctober 2024 was 1.65°C above the pre-industrial level and was the 15th month in a 16-month period for which the global-average surface air temperature exceeded 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. The global-average temperature for the past 12 months (November 2023 – October 2024) was 0.74°C above the 1991-2020 average\, and an estimated 1.62°C above the 1850-1900 pre-industrial average. The average global temperature anomaly for the first 10 months of 2024 (January to October) is 0.71°C above the 1991-2020 average\, which is the highest on record for this period and 0.16°C warmer than the same period in 2023.  It is now virtually certain that 2024 will be the warmest year on record. The average temperature anomaly for the rest  of 2024 would have to drop to almost zero for 2024 to not be the warmest year. Given that 2023 was 1.48°C above the pre-industrial level according to ERA5\, it is likewise virtually certain that the annual temperature for 2024 from ERA5 will be more than 1.5°C above the pre-industrial level\, and likely that it will be more than 1.55°C above. \nThe average temperature over European land for October 2024 was 10.83°C\, 1.23°C above the 1991-2020 average for October\, making the month the 5th warmest October on record for Europe. October 2022 is the warmest October on record\, at 1.92°C above average. European temperatures were above average over almost all of the continent. Outside Europe\, temperatures were most above average over northern Canada\, and well-above average over the central and western United States\, northern Tibet\, Japan and Australia. Temperatures were most notably below average over central Greenland and Iceland. The average sea surface temperature (SST) for October 2024 over 60°S–60°N was 20.68°C\, the second-highest value on record for the month\, and only 0.10°C below October 2023. DESCRIPTION:In het Burgerberaad Klimaat kwamen van januari tot september 2025 175 Nederlanders uit alle hoeken van het land\, van 17 tot 87 jaar zeven keer samen. \nZij gaan met elkaar en met deskundigen in gesprek over de vraag: hoe kunnen we als Nederland eten\, spullen gebruiken en reizen op een manier die beter is voor het klimaat? Uiteindelijk komen zij samen tot een advies aan het kabinet. Met een burgerberaad helpen inwoners hun volksvertegenwoordiging om beslissingen te nemen over complexe – vaak polariserende – onderwerpen. Een door loting samengestelde groep burgers doet\, op basis van uitgebreide informatie en overleg\, aanbevelingen over beleid. De deelnemers aan een burgerberaad vormen een dwarsdoorsnede van de samenleving. De uitkomst van een burgerberaad is een gezamenlijk besluit of een set aanbevelingen die door de vraagsteller – meestal de politiek – wordt gebruikt om besluiten te nemen. Een burgerberaad is een aanvulling op de representatieve democratie. Het is een vorm van deliberatieve democratie. In het woord burgerberaad ligt de nadruk op de onderlinge beraadslaging door de deelnemers. In een burgerberaad zitten ongeveer evenveel vrouwen als mannen\, de leeftijdsopbouw weerspiegelt die van de samenleving\, er zitten veel mensen in met een praktische opleiding\, wat minder met een universitaire opleiding\, en ze komen zowel uit dorp als stad. Dit zijn de categorieën waarop bij de gestratificeerde loting wordt geselecteerd. Afhankelijk van de vraagstelling kunnen andere categorieën worden gebruikt. De verdeling tussen de categorieën in de populatie moet bekend zijn uit wetenschappelijk onderzoek of uit een volkstelling. Uit het bevolkingsregister wordt een groot aantal personen door aselecte steekproef geselecteerd en uitgenodigd om deel te nemen\, waarbij hen wordt gevraagd naar de gegevens die nodig zijn voor de indeling categorieën. Uit de geïnteresseerden wordt de gestratificeerde loting uitgevoerd. \nOp 1 december 2025 is het advies van het Nationaal Burgerberaad Klimaat officieel gepresenteerd en overhandigd aan het kabinet\, de nieuwe Tweede Kamer en de rest van Nederland. Tijdens de presentatie werden de dertien aangenomen aanbevelingen toegelicht en gaven de deelnemers een inkijk in het bijzondere proces dat zij samen hebben doorlopen. DESCRIPTION:Ter gelegenheid van het 10 jarig jubileum is op 31 oktober 2024 het rapport ‘10 years of rapidly disentangling drivers of extreme weather disasters‘ van World Weather Attribution (WWA) verschenen. \nTien jaar geleden werd WWA opgericht met als doel direct na extreem weer wetenschappelijk bewijs te leveren over de rol van klimaatverandering. We noemen dat klimaatattributie. Klimaatattributie is van belang omdat een verandering in extreem weer grote gevolgen heeft voor de samenleving. Het nieuwe rapport vat samen wat er geleerd is in de afgelopen 10 jaar. In het rapport wordt teruggeblikt op tien extreme weergebeurtenissen in de afgelopen 20 jaar waarbij\, voorzover geregistreerd\, de meeste slachtoffers zijn gevallen. Deze terugblik laat de belangrijkste bevindingen en ontwikkelingen in het attributieonderzoek zien. SUMMARY:DANA's zware regens en overstromingen najaar 2024 in Spanje
DESCRIPTION:In het najaar van 2024 zorgden hevige regens en weerverschijnsel Depresión Aislada en Niveles Altos (DANA\, letterlijk ‘geïsoleerde depressie op hogere niveaus’) diverse malen voor meer dan een maand- en zelfs jaarhoeveelheid aan neerslag in verschillende gebieden van Spanje. \nVanaf 29 oktober 2024 zorgde een gota fría (“koude druppel”) voor hevige regenval en hagelbuien met plotselinge\, felle overstromingen in het zuiden en zuidoosten van Spanje\, vooral in de regio Valencia. Chiva kreeg bijna 500 millimeter regenval\, Utiel en Turís elk 200 mm\, en andere zuidoostelijke gemeenten 100 mm. In Andalusië veroorzaakte het weerverschijnsel aardverschuivingen en schade aan gebouwen\, wegen\, bruggen en landbouwgrond. Verschillende regio’s geraakten geïsoleerd en zaten dagenlang zonder elektriciteit\, telefoon- en internetverbinding en drinkbaar water. Hierdoor ontvluchtten inwoners hun dorpen\, wat bemoeilijkt werd door wegen die weggespoeld of onberijdbaar waren\, ook hulp geraakte moeilijk ter plekke. Mensen werden verrast en geraakten vast in hun wagens\, ondergrondse garages en gebouwen. Velen moesten door de Guardia Civil worden gered. Dagenlang was er onduidelijkheid over het aantal vermisten. Er werden in de dagen na de ramp duizenden hulpverleners ingezet: militairen\, agenten\, civiele bescherming en brandweer. Duizenden vrijwilligers kwamen te voet naar het rampgebied om te helpen met materieel\, voeding en water. Vaak waren zij daar voor de eerste officiële hulpverleners. \nMobiele mortuaria werden opgezet en het gerechtsgebouw van Valencia ging dienstdoen als mortuarium. Het Plan Sur (Plan Zuid)\, de nieuwe rivierbedding voor de Turia\, gebouwd nadat deze in 1957 catastrofaal overstroomde\, voorkwam overstromingen in de stad Valencia\, maar zorgde er wel voor dat de bebouwing ten zuiden ervan overstroomde. Overstromingen troffen uiteindelijk alle woongebieden in Horta Sud\, en ook de meeste in Camp de Túria en in Requena-Utiel. In Paiporta vielen de meeste dodelijke slachtoffers. De dagen nadien bleef het geregeld fel regenen in verschillende delen van Spanje\, eveneens in de eerder getroffen regio’s. Op 4 november viel er veel neerslag in en rond Barcelona en Tarragona. Ook daar was er wateroverlast en werden wegverkeer\, treinverkeer en de luchthaven van Barcelona gehinderd. De Spaanse regering kondigde op 30 oktober drie dagen van nationale rouw af. Koning Felipe en zijn echtgenote Letizia werden bekogeld met modder en uitgejouwd tijdens een bezoek aan Paiporte op 3 november. Het koninklijk echtpaar werd verweten pas vijf dagen na de ramp een bezoek aan de regio te brengen. Er klinkt kritiek op de Spaanse overheid\, die burgers te laat gewaarschuwd zou hebben\, de hulp van overheidswege zou onvoldoende zijn en de communicatie onduidelijk. Op 9 november eisten 130.000 demonstranten in Valencia daarom het aftreden van de regiopresident. Dat blijkt uit het Oxfam-rapport Carbon Inequality Kills. Helaas kunnen ze geen rode kaart trekken tegen deze absurde vervuiling. Maar ze kunnen er wél de aandacht op vestigen. De enorme CO2-uitstoot van miljardairs komt ten eerste door hun investeringen. Bijna 40% van de door Oxfam onderzochte investeringen van miljardairs is in megavervuilende industrieën\, zoals olie en mijnbouw. Door hun beleggingen oefenen de miljardairs veel invloed uit op deze vervuilende bedrijven\, die een hoofdrol spelen in de klimaatcrisis. DESCRIPTION:The Greenhouse Gas Bulletin has been published annually since 2004\, this publication presents the latest analysis of observations from the WMO Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW) Programme on concentrations of long-lived greenhouse gases in the atmosphere for 2023. \nThe Bulletin reports globally averaged surface mole fractions of carbon dioxide (CO2)\, methane (CH4)\, and nitrous oxide (N2O). It compares these values to those of the previous year and pre-industrial levels. Additionally\, it provides insights into changes in radiative forcing — the warming effect on the atmosphere by long-lived greenhouse gases and details the contribution of individual gases to this effect. The Greenhouse Gas Bulletin is released yearly to inform the United Nations Climate Change negotiations\, the annual Conference of the Parties (COP). In the course of 2023\, large vegetation fire CO2 emissions and a possible reduction in carbon absorption by forests combined with stubbornly high fossil fuel CO2 emissions from human and industrial activities to drive the increase\, according to the WMO’s annual Greenhouse Gas Bulletin No. 20. The globally-averaged surface concentration of CO2 reached 420.0 parts per million (ppm)\, methane 1 934 parts per billion and nitrous oxide 336.9 parts per billion (ppb) in 2023. \nThese values are 151%\, 265% and 125% of pre-industrial (before 1750) levels\, it said. These are calculated on the basis of the long-term observations within the Global Atmosphere Watch network of monitoring stations. The 2023 increase of CO2 in the atmosphere was higher than that of 2022\, although lower than that of the three years before that. The annual increase of 2.3 ppm marked the 12th consecutive year with an increase greater than 2 ppm. The WMO Greenhouse Gas Bulletin is one of WMO’s flagship publications released to inform the UN Climate Change conference\, COP\, and is now in its 20th issue. During that time the CO2 level has increased by 11.4 % (42.9 ppm) above the level of 377.1 ppm recorded in 2004 by WMO’s Global Atmosphere Watch network of monitoring stations. The Greenhouse Gas Bulletin reports on greenhouse gas concentrations\, rather than on emission levels. Analysis of data shows that just under half of CO2 emissions remain in the atmosphere. \nJust over one quarter are absorbed by the ocean and just under 30% by land ecosystems – although there is considerable year-to-year variability in this because of naturally occurring phenomena like El Niño and La Niña. The Greenhouse Gas Bulletin complements the UN Environment Programme’s Emissions Gap report. Both were published ahead of COP29 in Baku\, Azerbaijan. During El Niño years\, greenhouse gas levels tend to rise because drier vegetation and forest fires reduce the efficiency of land carbon sinks. “The Bulletin warns that we face a potential vicious cycle. Natural climate variability plays a big role in carbon cycle. But in the near future\, climate change itself could cause ecosystems to become larger sources of greenhouse gases. Wildfires could release more carbon emissions into the atmosphere\, whilst the warmer ocean might absorb less CO2. Consequently\, more CO2 could stay in the atmosphere to accelerate global warming. \nThese climate feedbacks are critical concerns to human society\,” said WMO Deputy Secretary-General Ko Barrett. From 1990 to 2023\, radiative forcing – the warming effect on our climate – by long-lived greenhouse gases increased by 51.5%\, with CO2 accounting for about 81% of this increase\, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Annual Greenhouse Gas Index cited in the WMO Bulletin. As long as emissions continue\, greenhouse gases will continue accumulating in the atmosphere leading to global temperature rise. Given the extremely long life of CO2 in the atmosphere\, the temperature level already observed will persist for several decades even if emissions are rapidly reduced to net zero. The last time the Earth experienced a comparable concentration of CO2 was 3-5 million years ago\, when the temperature was 2-3°C warmer and sea level was 10-20 meters higher than now. \nLinks:\nGreenhouse gas concentrations surge again to new record in 2023

DESCRIPTION:Stay Grounded and New Economics Foundation published a study on the Frequent Flying Levy (FFL) in Europe\, based on economic modeling by CE Delft and a legal assessment by AdaStone Law. \nThe report is published in several languages\, and with partners: Possible (UK)\, Ecologistas en Acción (ES)\, Bond Beter Leefmilieu (BE)\, 2DegreeCelsius (RO)\, Rester sur Terre (FR)\, New Weather Institute (SW)\, and further collaborations. The Frequent Flying Levy is a tax levied on all airline tickets. It aims to limit excessive flights\, which are usually taken by high-income passengers. It will cut air traffic without making flights more expensive for 72% of us\, who don’t fly often. This progressive policy raises the tax rate of the FFL incrementally after every two single flights taken. In other words\, there is no levy on the first return flight each year\, a 50€ levy on the second\, 100 € on the third\, and so on. The FFL would replace existing ticket taxes. Currently jet-fuel is untaxed in most countries. If this tax exemption is continued\, we propose as a second component a distance-based surcharge. The reason for this is that longer flights burn much more jet fuel and are therefore more polluting. This second component of the FFL would cease to be necessary\, as soon as a kerosene tax is implemented. A third component is a surcharge on business/first class seats\, as these take up much more space and are therefore more polluting. \nFlying\, the most energy-intensive and polluting form of transport\, is unevenly distributed within and between countries. 1% of the world population produces 50% of aviation emissions\, while 80% have never set foot on an aeroplane. In western Europe\, where 80% of the highest-income households fly at least once a year\, just 30% do so from the lowest-income households. Climate measures for aviation to-date are insufficient for the short- to long-term\, and overly reliant on technologies that do not yet exist at scale and are not truly sustainable. It is therefore key to reduce air traffic. While a variety of measures like a kerosene tax or limits at airports are important\, most of them would directly or indirectly lead to higher ticket prices. Therefore\, they should be complemented by fair social policies. The Frequent Flying Levy (FFL) is a measure that could contribute to solving the aforementioned issues. This progressive tax targets excessive pollution by frequent flyers\, who are mostly wealthy\, while allowing access to affordable occasional flights for lower income groups. The FFL could raise substantial revenues which could be utilised for the enormous finance gaps for a just transition\, mitigation and global climate finance. DESCRIPTION:As climate impacts intensify globally\, the ‘Emissions Gap Report 2024: No more hot air … please!‘ finds that nations must deliver dramatically stronger ambition and action in the next round of Nationally Determined Contributions or the Paris Agreement’s 1.5°C goal will be gone within a few years. \nThe report is the 15th edition in a series that brings together many of the world’s top climate scientists to look at future trends in greenhouse gas emissions and provide potential solutions to the challenge of global warming. The report looks at how much nations must promise to cut off greenhouse gases\, and deliver\, in the next round of Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs)\, due for submission in early 2025 ahead of COP30. Cuts of 42 per cent are needed by 2030 and 57 per cent by 2035 to get on track for 1.5°C. A failure to increase ambition in these new NDCs and start delivering immediately would put the world on course for a temperature increase of 2.6-3.1°C over the course of this century. This would bring debilitating impacts to people\, planet and economies. It remains technically possible to get on a 1.5°C pathway\, with solar\, wind and forests holding real promise for sweeping and fast emissions cuts. To deliver on this potential\, sufficiently strong NDCs would need to be backed urgently by a whole-of-government approach\, measures that maximize socioeconomic and environmental co-benefits\, enhanced international collaboration that includes reform of the global financial architecture\, strong private sector action and a minimum six-fold increase in mitigation investment. DESCRIPTION:Bijna een kwart ziekenhuizen in problemen bij hevige regen. \nVan de 77 Nederlandse ziekenhuizen die acute zorg verlenen\, komen er 17 in de problemen als er een korte\, heftige regenbui valt. Bijvoorbeeld doordat ambulances en patiënten het ziekenhuis niet meer kunnen bereiken vanwege plassen op de weg\, of doordat de Spoedeisende Hulp overstroomt of onbereikbaar wordt. Eerder dit jaar kwam dit al twee keer voor bij het Slingeland Ziekenhuis in Doetinchem. Dat blijkt uit onderzoek van Investico\, in samenwerking met NU.nl\, De Gelderlander\, De Stentor en De Groene Amsterdammer\, met behulp van een gedetailleerd model dat door kennisinstituut Deltares werd ontwikkeld. Hoe ga je verder met je dagelijks leven\, als je weet dat elders op de wereld verschrikkelijke bosbranden gaande zijn? Bosbranden gaande zijn? Kan dat eigenlijk? Niet wegkijken van al die gevolgen van de klimaatcrisis en toch iets van levensgeluk vasthouden? Het leven ondanks alles blijven vieren? Velen van ons hebben besloten om zich in te zetten om de klimaatcrisis aan te pakken. Dat kan zijn door plantaardig te eten\, of minder plastic te gebruiken. Anderen gaan het gesprek aan in hun omgeving om bewustwording te vergroten. Of gaan over tot actie\, samen met één van de milieu-organisaties als Milieudefensie\, Greenpeace of Extinction Rebellion. \nVoor zoveel mogelijk mensen die boos\, bezorgd of verdrietig zijn over het klimaat en geïnspireerd zijn om iets te veranderen aan de toestand van het klimaat. Activisten\, bezorgde mensen\, religieus en niet-religieus\, jongeren en volwassenen. Bezoekers van de Klimaatwakes zoeken inspiratie om zich actief in te zetten. Samen delen waar je bang voor bent\, omdat je niet wilt wegkijken\, maar klimaat-rampen onder ogen zien\, geeft troost. Soms merk je dat je inzet tegen de klimaatcrisis je kan vervreemden of isoleren van je vrienden of familie. Of je kan je verdrietig en gefrustreerd voelen dat er zo slecht geluisterd wordt door overheid en bedrijven. De CEO van de Rabobank wordt verantwoordelijk gehouden voor het veroorzaken van 10.000.000.000 euro schade door ontbossing in Brazilië. De ceo zit aan de knoppen\, hij kan de natuurverwoesting stoppen. Tot nu toe doet hij dat niet. DESCRIPTION:  \nAn international coalition of 15\,000 scientists led by Oregon State University scientists concludes in its annual report that the Earth’s worsening vital signs indicate a “critical and unpredictable new phase of the climate crisis” and that “decisive action is needed\, and fast.” \nThe collaboration outlines areas where policy change is needed – energy\, pollutants\, nature\, food and economy – in “The 2024 State of the Climate Report: Perilous Times on Planet Earth\,” published in BioScience. Of the 35 planetary vital signs the scientists use to track climate change annually\, 25 are at record extremes. The three hottest days ever came in July 2024\, and fossil fuel emissions are at an all-time high\, as are human population and ruminant livestock population\, the climate report shows. Human population is increasing at the rate of approximately 200\,000 people per day\, and the number of ruminant livestock – hoofed mammals such as cattle\, sheep and goats that produce greenhouse gases and are energy intensive to raise – rises by roughly 170\,000 each day. The annual consumption of fossil fuels climbed by 1.5% in 2023\, mainly because of big jumps in coal (1.6%) and oil use (2.5%)\, the report indicates. Renewable energy use also increased in 2023 – solar and wind consumption together were up 15% over 2022. DESCRIPTION:Hurricane Milton is a strong tropical cyclone that made landfall in the U.S. state of Florida\, less than two weeks after Hurricane Helene devastated the state’s Big Bend region. \nThe thirteenth named storm\, ninth hurricane\, fourth major hurricane\, and second Category 5 hurricane of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season\, Milton formed from a long-tracked tropical disturbance which originated in the western Caribbean Sea and consolidated in the Bay of Campeche on October 5. The storm then underwent explosive intensification\, and became a Category 5 hurricane on October 7 while still over the Gulf of Mexico. At peak intensity\, the hurricane was the fifth-most intense in the Atlantic on record\, and is the most powerful tropical cyclone worldwide in 2024. Milton weakened to Category 4 after an eyewall replacement cycle\, then regained strength and became a Category 5 hurricane again. Increasing wind shear then caused the hurricane to weaken as it turned northeastwards towards Florida\, eventually falling to Category 3 intensity before making landfall on Siesta Key. Ahead of the hurricane\, Florida declared a state of emergency in which many coastal residents were ordered to evacuate. Preparations were also undertaken in Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula. DESCRIPTION:Hulporganisatie het Rode Kruis opent giro 661 voor getroffenen overstromingen\, cyclonen en droogte. \n2024 is nu al een recordjaar natuurrampen voor het Rode Kruis. Niet eerder kwam de hulporganisatie op grote schaal in actie bij zoveel overstromingen\, tropische stormen en periodes van hitte of droogte. Van Soedan tot Bangladesh\, van Brazilië tot in Centraal-Europa: ieder continent heeft te maken met extreem weer. Het Rode Kruis opent daarom giro 661\, om de mensen in de meest kwetsbare situaties te helpen met voedsel\, water en medische zorg.  Er is gigantisch veel hulp nodig van het Rode Kruis nodig na overstromingen\, stormen\, hittegolven en periodes van droogte. De hulporganisatie verleende dit jaar al op grote schaal hulp bij 79 natuurrampen wereldwijd. Sommige landen\, zoals Bangladesh\, Tsjaad en Mozambique\, werden zelfs meerdere keren flink getroffen. In 2023 ging het om 58 natuurrampen in dezelfde periode\, in 2022 waren het er 43. Natuurrampen komen steeds vaker voor en zijn intenser. Door hevige overstromingen verkeren miljoenen mensen in Nigeria\, Niger\, Tsjaad en Soedan in nood. In Bangladesh regende het zoveel\, dat vijf miljoen mensen zijn getroffen door overstromingen. Supertyfoon Yagi was één van de heftigste stormen ooit in Zuidoost-Azië\, met meer dan 200 doden in Myanmar. Honderdduizenden mensen die al in vluchtelingenkampen wonen\, moeten opnieuw op zoek naar een veilige plek. En door de lange periode van droogte in zuidelijk Afrika\, zoals Zambia en Zimbabwe\, beschadigen oogsten keer op keer. Daardoor zijn veel meer mensen afhankelijk van humanitaire hulp. DESCRIPTION:WISE\, Kappen met Kolen\, Extinction Rebellion en Comité Schone Lucht organiseren op zaterdag 28 september 2024 een landelijke protestactie bij de Amercentrale in Geertruidenberg\, fiets mee vanaf Breda of kom op eigen gelegenheid naar de centrale. \nOp 1 januari 2025 stopt de Amercentrale met het stoken van kolen\, vanwege de ‘wet verbod op kolen’. Veel mensen denken dat er hierdoor minder CO2-uitstoot is. Maar helaas is dat niet waar! Niet alleen gaat de centrale over op biomassa\, ook blijven de uitstootrechten op de markt. Door de werking van het Europese emissiehandelssysteem (ETS) kunnen de uitstootrechten gewoon gebruikt worden door andere bedrijven voor hun uitstoot. In plaats van dat de kolencentrale sluit en daarmee de uitstoot stopt\, gaat die juist dubbel zo hard door. WISE\, Kappen met Kolen\, Extinction Rebellion en Comité Schone Lucht vragen\, net als de Europese Commissie\, de Nederlandse overheid om de ETS-rechten van de Amercentrale van de markt te halen. Zo zal de uitstoot pas echt omlaag gaan. Stoppen met kolen\, is stoppen met de uitstootrechten en stoppen met biomassa. Dit is beter voor het klimaat\, de natuur én onze gezondheid. Fiets mee voor een echte klimaatoplossing. Half oktober 2024 debatteert de Tweede Kamer over verduurzaming en WISE\, Kappen met Kolen\, Extinction Rebellion en Comité Schone Lucht willen laten zien dat alleen het stoppen met kolen stoken half werk is. Geef gehoor aan de oproep van de Europese Commissie om ook de kolenrechten uit de markt te halen. Verzamelen vanaf 12:00 bij Breda Centraal Station en om 12:30 fietsen naar de centrale. Om 14:00 aankomst bij de Amercentrale en hier zijn drankjes\, hapjes\, speeches en muziek. Rond 15:30 weer terugfietsen. DESCRIPTION:Hurricane Helene (/hɛˈliːn/\, heh-LEEN) is a hurricane\, the eighth named storm\, fifth hurricane\, and second major hurricane of the 2024 Atlantic hurricane season\, Helene developed from a broad area of low pressure in the Western Caribbean Sea in late September that the National Hurricane Center (NHC) first began watching on September 17\, 2024. \nBy September 24\, the disturbance had consolidated enough to become a tropical storm as it approached the Yucatán Peninsula\, receiving the name Helene. Gradual intensification then ensued due to favorable conditions\, with the cyclone becoming a hurricane early on September 25. Pronounced and eventually rapid intensification ensued as Helene entered the Gulf of Mexico by the following day\, with it reaching Category 4 intensity on the evening of September 26. Late on September 26\, Helene made landfall at peak intensity in the Big Bend region of Florida\, with maximum sustained winds of 220 km/h. In advance of the expected landfall of Helene\, the governors of Florida and Georgia both declared a state of emergency due to the significant impacts expected including very high storm surge and hurricane-force gusts as far inland as Atlanta. Hurricane warnings also extended further inland.
