Observations also reveal regional differences that make local and regional experiences of environmental change highly variable for people\, plants and animals. DESCRIPTION:The report\, ‘The Global Threat of Drying Lands: Regional and global aridity trends and future projections‘\, was launched at the 16th conference of UNCCD’s nearly 200 Parties in Riyadh\, Saudi Arabia (COP16)\, the largest UN land conference to date\, and the first UNCCD COP to be held in the Middle East\, a region profoundly affected by impacts from aridity. \nFor the first time\, the aridity crisis has been documented with scientific clarity\, revealing an existential threat affecting billions around the globe. The analysis points to human-caused climate change as the primary driver of this shift. Greenhouse gas emissions from electricity generation\, transport\, industry and land use changes warm the planet and other human activities warm the planet and affect rainfall\, evaporation and plant life\, creating the conditions that increase aridity. Even as dramatic water-related disasters such as floods and storms intensified in some parts of the world\, more than three-quarters of Earth’s land became permanently drier in recent decades\, UN scientists warned today in a stark new analysis. Some 77.6% of Earth’s land experienced drier conditions during the three decades leading up to 2020 compared to the previous 30-year period\, according to the landmark report from the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). Over the same period\, drylands expanded by about 4.3 million km2 – an area nearly a third larger than India\, the world’s 7th largest country – and now cover 40.6% of all land on Earth (excluding Antarctica). In recent decades some 7.6% of global lands – an area larger than Canada – were pushed across aridity thresholds (i.e. from non-drylands to drylands\, or from less arid dryland classes to more arid classes). \nMost of these areas have transitioned from humid landscapes to drylands\, with dire implications for agriculture\, ecosystems\, and the people living there. And the research warns that\, if the world fails to curb greenhouse gas emissions\, another 3% of the world’s humid areas will become drylands by the end of this century. In high greenhouse gas emissions scenarios\, expanding drylands are forecast across the Midwestern United States\, central Mexico\, northern Venezuela\, north-eastern Brazil\, south-eastern Argentina\, the entire Mediterranean Region\, the Black Sea coast\, large parts of southern Africa\, and southern Australia. The report by UNCCD Science-Policy Interface (SPI) — the UN body for assessing the science of land degradation and drought — points to human-caused climate change as the primary driver of this shift. DESCRIPTION:Op woensdag 4 december om 12:00 luidt Extinction Rebellion met wekkers en sirenes in Den Haag de noodklok met een onaangekondigde A12-blokkade. \nOp donderdag 5 december 2024 debatteert de Tweede Kamer-commissie Klimaat en Groene Groei\, na vele malen uitstel\, eindelijk met de minister over fossiele subsidies. De gevolgen van de klimaat- en ecologische crisis worden iedere dag zichtbaarder en ernstiger. Extinction Rebellion eist een direct einde aan de jaarlijks 39\,7 tot 46.4 miljard euro fossiele subsidies. Ieder jaar gaat er wereldwijd 2300% meer geld naar fossiele subsidies dan er — volgens het klimaatakkoord van de COP29 in Bakoe — vanaf 2035 naar het afzwakken van de gevolgen van de klimaat- en ecologische crisis zal gaan. Dit betekent dat de armste landen en de eilandstaten moeten toezien hoe er jaarlijks door overheden wereldwijd 7.000 miljard euro in de fossiele industrie wordt gepompt\, terwijl zij hun land ten onder zien gaan aan droogte\, hongersnood\, zeespiegelstijging\, orkanen en bosbranden. Dit onrecht is onbegrijpelijk en onaanvaardbaar. In oktober luidde de VN de noodklok in het jaarlijkse Emissions Gap Report. De uitstoot moet drastisch omlaag om klimaatcatastrofe te voorkomen. In Nederland concludeerde het PBL dat ‘het heel erg onwaarschijnlijk is dat Nederland het wettelijke klimaatdoel van 55 procent emissiereductie in 2030 haalt’. Zelfs als alle landen hun nationale ambities waarmaken\, komt de opwarming uit op 2\,6 graden. Helaas leidde de COP29 niet tot ambitieuze plannen om met fossiele subsidies te stoppen. Alleen Colombia\, Nieuw-Zeeland en het Verenigd Koninkrijk hebben zich als nieuwe leden aan de internationale fossiele subsidies coalitie verbonden. Dat betekent dat vier van de zeven grootste industriële landen van de EU onderdeel zijn van de coalitie\, maar ook dat de afschaffing van fossiele subsidies nog altijd ver weg is. TNO\, het KNMI\, het RIVM en de Vrije Universiteit (VU) sloegen met project WARM de handen ineen en hebben een waarschuwingssysteem voor hitte ontwikkeld: de hittekrachtindex\, een model met de uniforme waarden hittekracht en hittefit. De index kijkt niet alleen naar temperatuur\, maar ook naar wind\, stralingswarmte en luchtvochtigheid. Met de index willen de bedenkers een completer beeld geven bij warm weer dan alleen temperatuur. DESCRIPTION:Kleine eilandstaten\, op initiatief van Vanuatu\, westerse landen en ontwikkelingslanden hebben een zaak aangespannen bij het Internationaal Gerechtshof in Den Haag om de gevolgen van de opwarming van de aarde tegen te gaan. \nIn de zaak wordt gekeken welke verplichtingen landen hebben om klimaatverandering tegen te gaan. Het eiland wil ook duidelijk krijgen wat de juridische gevolgen zijn als landen niet genoeg doen om de uitstoot van broeikasgassen te verminderen. Het advies van het Internationaal Gerechtshof is niet bindend\, maar zowel juridisch als politiek gezien relevant. Het kan daarna wereldwijd worden aangehaald in rechtszaken over klimaatverandering. In de zaak wordt speciaal gekeken naar de gevolgen van klimaatverandering voor kwetsbare landen\, zoals kleine eilandstaten. De twee grootste uitstoters van broeikasgassen ter wereld worden ook gehoord in de zaak: de Verenigde Staten en China. En de OPEC\, het kartel van olieproducerende landen\, komt eveneens aan het woord. De hoorzittingen duren tot 13 december 2024. Op zondag 1 december 2024 staan we op voor het klimaat. De klimaatcrisis wordt steeds zichtbaarder\, denk alleen al aan de overstromingen in Spanje. Maar oplossingen lijken soms verder weg dan ooit. \n\nMet Trump als president dreigen de VS opnieuw uit het klimaatakkoord van Parijs te stappen.\nDe uitspraak in de Klimaatzaak van Milieudefensie geeft Shell voorlopig de ruimte om door te gaan met vervuilen.\nDit kabinet weigert te doen wat nodig is om ons te beschermen tegen gevaarlijke klimaatverandering. Zo besloten premier Schoof en de staatssecretaris voor Milieu om niet naar de klimaattop in Bakoe (COP29) te gaan\, net als andere Europese regeringsleiders.\nOp de klimaattop in Bakoe (COP29) is er weer geen doorbraak gekomen: rijke landen blijven veel te weinig betalen voor de klimaatschade die zij veroorzaken.\n\nDe strijd tegen klimaatverandering is taai. Maar Milieudefensie geeft niet op! Daarom staan zij op voor het klimaat en eisen dat: \n🏭 alle grote vervuilers hun CO2-uitstoot uiterlijk 2030 halveren;\n🌎 het kabinet burgers beschermt tegen gevaarlijke klimaatverandering;\n💶 er een stop komt op fossiele subsidies. \nSteun jij deze eisen? DESCRIPTION:Op woensdag 27 november 2024 krijgen we vanaf het einde van de middag en vooral in de avond met storm Conall te maken. \nIn de avond geldt in het noorden van Nederland code oranje voor zeer zware windstoten. Het gaat om de provincies Noord-Holland\, Friesland\, Flevoland\, Groningen\, Drenthe en Overijssel. Hier kunnen gevaarlijke situaties ontstaan. Het verkeer zal hinder ondervinden\, vooral fietsers en bestuurders van vrachtwagens en auto’s met aanhanger moeten alert zijn. Bomen kunnen omwaaien en er is kans op schade aan huizen en gebouwen zoals aan daken. Elders noord van de grote rivieren geldt code geel voor zware windstoten. Ook hiervan kan het verkeer hinder ondervinden. Er is kans op ongelukken door het afbreken van boomtakken en rondvliegende voorwerpen zoals dakpannen of tuinmeubels. In de eerste helft van de nacht naar donderdag verlaten de (zeer) zware windstoten het noordoosten van het land. In het noorden soms zeer zware windstoten van 120-130 km/uur in de kustgebieden en 100-110 km/uur een stukje landinwaarts. Elders noord van de grote rivieren zware windstoten van 80-100 km/uur. Niet wegkijken van al die gevolgen van de klimaatcrisis en toch iets van levensgeluk vasthouden? Het leven ondanks alles blijven vieren? Velen van ons hebben besloten om zich in te zetten om de klimaatcrisis aan te pakken. Dat kan zijn door plantaardig te eten\, of minder plastic te gebruiken. Anderen gaan het gesprek aan in hun omgeving om bewustwording te vergroten. Of gaan over tot actie\, samen met één van de milieu-organisaties als Milieudefensie\, Greenpeace of Extinction Rebellion. \nVoor zoveel mogelijk mensen die boos\, bezorgd of verdrietig zijn over het klimaat en geïnspireerd zijn om iets te veranderen aan de toestand van het klimaat. Activisten\, bezorgde mensen\, religieus en niet-religieus\, jongeren en volwassenen. Bezoekers van de Klimaatwakes zoeken inspiratie om zich actief in te zetten. Samen delen waar je bang voor bent\, omdat je niet wilt wegkijken\, maar klimaat-rampen onder ogen zien\, geeft troost. Soms merk je dat je inzet tegen de klimaatcrisis je kan vervreemden of isoleren van je vrienden of familie. Of je kan je verdrietig en gefrustreerd voelen dat er zo slecht geluisterd wordt door overheid en bedrijven. A severe weather warning is in place for the Netherlands on Wednesday\, 27 November\, as Storm Conall approaches. Strong winds are expected to affect the western and northern parts of the country\, leading to potential disruptions. A code yellow alert has been issued for several provinces\, including Zeeland\, South Holland\, and Friesland. The United Kingdom’s\, Met Office has a yellow rain warning in force for much of the south coast of England. Met Office Chief Meteorologist\, Steve Willington\, said “Much of the warning area will see 15–20 millimetres (0.59–0.79 in) of rain\, with 30–40 millimetres (1.2–1.6 in) in some areas. DESCRIPTION:With 2024 on track to be declared the hottest on record\, scientists from IIASA and Columbia University have noticed that specific regions are consistently more affected by extreme temperatures\, the study ‘Global emergence of regional heatwave hotspots outpaces climate model simulations‘ provides the first worldwide map of these regional climate danger zones. \n\n\n\nAmid the continued upward march in average temperatures over the past decades\, a recent surge of record shattering extreme heat waves raise questions about the degree to which climate models can provide adequate estimates of relations between global mean temperature changes and regional climate risks. The study looks at heat waves over the past 65 years\, identifying areas where extreme heat is accelerating considerably faster than typical warm-season temperatures overall. This often results in maximum temperature records that have been repeatedly broken. These extreme heat waves have been hitting predominantly in the last five years\, although some occurred in the early 2000s or before. The most hard-hit regions include central China\, Japan\, Korea\, the Arabian Peninsula\, eastern Australia and parts of South America and the Arctic. The most intense and consistent signal\, however\, comes from northwestern Europe\, where sequences of heat waves contributed to around 60\,000 deaths in 2022 and 47\,000 in 2023. These occurred across Germany\, France\, the United Kingdom\, and the Netherlands among others. \nIn September this year\, new maximum temperature records were set in Austria\, France\, Hungary\, Slovenia\, Norway and Sweden. Many parts of the United States Southwest and California also saw record temperatures well into October. In these regions\, extreme temperatures are increasing faster than average summer temperatures\, at a rate far higher than what state-of-the art climate models have been projecting for the past few decades. The phenomenon is however not happening everywhere; the study shows that the increase in temperatures across many other regions is lower than what models would predict. These include wide areas of the north-central United States and south-central Canada\, interior parts of South America\, much of Siberia\, northern Africa and northern Australia. DESCRIPTION:Recognizing the important role of safe\, affordable\, accessible and sustainable transport systems for all in supporting sustainable economic growth\, improving the social welfare of people and enhancing international cooperation and trade among countries\, the General Assembly decided to declare 26 November as World Sustainable Transport Day. \nIt also noted the importance of cooperation in enhancing transport connectivity through an integrated intermodal transport system by developing quality\, reliable\, sustainable and resilient infrastructure\, exchanging best practices to optimize the development of interconnected highways\, roads\, streets\, railways\, waterways\, airways\, areas of modal transfer and ports\, and by encouraging transport infrastructure construction and operations to minimize consumption of energy\, land and other resources; generate lower emissions of greenhouse gases\, ozone-depleting substances and other pollutants and ensure a positive social impact. The Assembly invited stakeholders to mark World Sustainable Transport Day by means of education and the holding of events aimed at enhancing the knowledge of the public on sustainable transport issues\, in particular enhancing intermodal transport connectivity\, promoting environmentally friendly transportation\, developing socially inclusive transport infrastructure and other aspects of transport sustainability. Transport is vital for promoting connectivity\, trade\, economic growth and employment. Yet it is also implicated as a significant source of green-house gas emissions. Resolving these trade-offs is essential to achieving sustainable transport and\, through that\, sustainable development. \nIn its 2016 report\, the Secretary-General’s High-level Advisory Group defined sustainable transport as “the provision of services and infrastructure for the mobility of people and goods — advancing economic and social development to benefit today’s and future generations — in a manner that is safe\, affordable\, accessible\, efficient\, and resilient\, while minimizing carbon and other emissions and environmental impacts.” Sustainable transport is therefore not an end in itself\, but a means to achieve sustainable development. Sustainable transport — with its objectives of universal access\, enhanced safety\, reduced environmental and climate impact\, improved resilience\, and greater efficiency — is central to sustainable development. Apart from providing services and infrastructure for the mobility of people and goods\, sustainable transport is a cross-cutting accelerator\, that can fast-track progress towards other crucial goals\, such as eradicating poverty in all its dimensions\, reducing inequality\, empowering women\, and combatting climate change. Find out more about sustainable transport and sustainable development in this interagency report. \nLinks:\nWorld Sustainable Transport Day

De conferentie wordt georganiseerd door activisten met steun van diverse organisaties waaronder Extinction Rebellion\, Fossielvrij NL\, FNV\, Greenpeace\, Internationale Socialisten\, Milieudefensie\, Oxfam Novib\, TNI\, Scientist Rebellion en Wise. De klimaatactieconferentie is bedoeld voor iedereen die actief is in de klimaatbeweging: deelneemt aan protesten of zich op andere manieren hard maakt voor een rechtvaardig klimaatbeleid. Begin maart 2024 was de vierde drukbezochte actieconferentie. De volgende halfjaarlijkse bijeenkomst is op zondag 24 november 2024 in Utrecht. Sinds 2020 is de politieke context van onze strijd voor klimaatrechtvaardigheid niet zo snel veranderd als in de afgelopen maanden. (Extreem) rechts is in de Kamer nog nooit zo groot geweest\, en links nog nooit zo klein. Welke gevolgen heeft dat voor de klimaatstrijd? DESCRIPTION:Storm Bert was named by the Irish Met Éireann and Sigrid by Free University of Berlin on 21 November 2024. \nBert is expected to bring heavy snow and ice to parts of the UK\, particularly in the north\, on Thursday 21 and Friday 22 November 2024. As the storm passes\, heavy rain will affect southern and western regions over the weekend. The Met Office has issued severe weather warnings and the UK Health Security Agency has issued cold weather alerts. Drivers are advised to take extra care on the roads due to icy conditions and to be prepared for potential disruptions. \nAn amber snow and ice warning was placed for parts of central Scotland\, which included parts of Angus\, Perth and Kinross\, Stirling\, Aberdeenshire\, the Highlands\, and Argyll and Bute. The warning was originally in place from 07:00-17:00 GMT on November 23\, but expired earlier. There was also one for northern England from 06:00-11:59. Several yellow wind and rain warnings were issued for parts of England and Wales. A yellow wind warning was issued for the same areas\, excluding Angus\, and also included Eileanan Siar and Moray. A yellow warning of rain was also issued which included parts of Angus\, Clackmannanshire\, Perth and Kinross\, Stirling\, Aberdeenshire\, Moray\, Dumfries and Galloway\, and the Scottish Borders. The next day a yellow wind warning was issued for the Midlands\, East Anglia and the London area. \nFor Ireland\, similar impacts are expected from Storm Bert\, with Met Éireann issued yellow wind and rain warnings for the whole country. These are likely to be changed and updated as the system nears. In Ireland\, 34\,000 without power. The weather has also brought significant disruption\, with several flights disrupted at Newcastle and Dublin airports and extreme flooding in Donegal. Elsewhere\, Ferry operator DFDS has cancelled services on some routes until Monday with sailings from Newhaven to Dieppe and Dover to Calais being severely affected. \nSo far\, as a result of the storm there have been five recorded fatalities. A 34-year-old man died after his car “spun off the road” in icy conditions and struck a wall in Shipley\, West Yorkshire just before 1am. Hours later in a separate incident\, a second man aged in his 60s was killed when a tree fell onto his vehicle in Hampshire shortly after 07.45. In North Wales the body of a 75-year-old man was recovered from the floods in the Conwy Valley. Five adults and five children have been rescued after a landslide in North Wales. Lancashire Police confirmed a man in his 80s died on Sunday after his car entered a body of water in Colne on Sunday. In Northamptonshire\, a man in his 40s died in a crash on the A45 near Flore which police have described as an “unexplained death”. All 10 people were rescued from the house in Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog\, near Llangollen. \nWinds from Storm Bert strengthened on Saturday morning\, with top gusts of 132 km/h recorded at Capel Curig in Wales\, and 121 km/h at Needles on the Isle of Wight. In Scotland\, the Cairngorm mountains saw blizzard conditions and winds of up to 169 km/h. The attribution framework employs a storyline attribution approach exploring a comprehensive set of counterfactuals scenarios—estimates characterizing historical SST shifts due to human-caused climate change—and considering atmospheric variability. These counterfactual scenarios affect the quantification and significance of attributable changes in hurricane potential and observed actual intensities since pre-industrial. A summary of attributable influences on hurricanes during five recent North Atlantic hurricane seasons (2019–2023) and a case study of Hurricane Ian (2022) reveal that human-driven SST shifts have already driven robust changes in 84% of recent observed hurricane intensities. Hurricanes during the 2019–2023 seasons were 8.3 m s−1 faster\, on average\, than they would have been in a world without climate change. DESCRIPTION:The United Nations Climate Change Conferences are yearly conferences held in the framework of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). \nThey serve as the formal meeting of the UNFCCC parties – the Conference of the Parties (COP) – to assess progress in dealing with climate change\, and beginning in the mid-1990s\, to negotiate the Kyoto Protocol to establish legally binding obligations for developed countries to reduce their greenhouse gas emissions. Starting in 2005 the conferences have also served as the “Conference of the Parties Serving as the Meeting of Parties to the Kyoto Protocol” (CMP); also parties to the convention that are not parties to the protocol can participate in protocol-related meetings as observers. From 2011 to 2015 the meetings were used to negotiate the Paris Agreement as part of the Durban platform\, which created a general path towards climate action. Any final text of a COP must be agreed by consensus. The 2024 United Nations Climate Change Conference or Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC\, more commonly known as COP29\, will be the 29th United Nations Climate Change conference. SUMMARY:Energy Embargo Now to End the Genocide! No Environmental Justice without Palestinian Liberation!
DESCRIPTION:Israel’s genocide against 2.3 million Palestinians grinds on\, destroying Gaza and causing a catastrophic human and environmental disaster of untold proportions. \nOn the occasion of COP29\, we call on all civil society organisations at COP29 and around the world to mobilise urgently to impose an energy embargo on Israel to stop the genocide in Palestine and put an end to Israel’s apartheid\, illegal occupation and ecocide. At least 45\,000 Palestinians in Gaza have now been killed\, with estimates that the death toll is likely far larger. Many thousands are buried under the rubble of their homes\, with hundreds of thousands of others suffering from severe physical injuries and mental scars\, and most of Gaza’s population deliberately starved and undernourished\, forcibly displaced in tents. The situation is more horrifying in the north of Gaza where Israel is committing massacres and ethnic cleansing. Many thousands more are being held in Israel’s network of torture camps\, subject to the most barbaric treatment imaginable. This shocking human cost has been combined with an appalling ecological destruction\, intentionally inflicted on Gaza to make it uninhabitable. According to UN human experts\, Israel’s genocide has also included “domicide\, urbicide\, scholasticide\, medicide\, cultural genocide and\, more recently\, ecocide.” \nSince the start of the genocide\, more than 76% of Gaza’s agricultural land has been damaged or destroyed\, and there has been extensive damage to soil\, green houses\, water wells\, farms and animal shelters. Israel’s genocidal war has emitted hundreds of thousands of tonnes of CO2 emissions\, equal to 31\,000 kilotons of coal – enough to power about 15.8 coal-fired power plants for a year. During the first 120 days alone\, this produced more CO2 than the annual emissions of 26 countries and territories. The CO2 emissions that will be produced during the rebuilding of Gaza’s devastated urban landscape will produce a figure higher than that of over 130 countries. Chemicals from weapons such as white phosphorus have also contaminated the air\, and likely impacted agricultural land and soil. Meanwhile in the West Bank\, the Israeli occupation has continued its colonization and theft of Palestinian land and natural resources for illegal settlements\, killing approximately 800 Palestinians and injuring thousands of others in the process. This is despite the International Court of Justice declaring in July 2024 that Israel’s entire occupation is illegal and must be brought to an end. \nThe international community’s failure to end state\, corporate and institutional complicity in Israel’s genocide and underlying system of apartheid – and to impose legal\, targeted sanctions to stop Israel’s war machine – has emboldened it with a sense of complete impunity\, giving it carte blanche to spread its destruction and massacres beyond Palestine to the people of Lebanon. In just a few weeks\, Israel killed more than 2\,000 Lebanese citizens\, injuring more than 10\,000 and wantonly destroying thousands of homes and entire villages. It is clear from Israel’s bombardment that it intends to spread its genocidal pattern of destruction – targeting hospitals\, medical staff and civilian infrastructure – to the people of Lebanon. Israel’s use of white phosphorus and cluster munitions has devastated agricultural production in south Lebanon\, and its direct attack on the Litani water conveyance system demonstrates that such destruction is intentional. \nIsrael’s plans are now clear as day: to ethnically cleanse the entirety of Palestine and the south of Lebanon of their indigenous peoples\, a continuation of the ongoing Nakba that has gone on\, unabated\, since 1948 until the present day. In this context\, the international community’s delayed demand for a ceasefire in Gaza is meaningless unless backed up by concrete actions that can stop Israel’s genocidal war machine. The governments and corporations profiting from and supporting a financial system and socio-economic order destroying our planet\, indigenous lands and forcing millions of people into exile and poverty\, are the very ones complicit in powering and fuelling Israel’s genocidal machine. \nLinks:\nEnergy Embargo Now to End the Genocide!

Click image to read\nAccording to the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S)\, October 2024 was the second-warmest October globally\, after October 2023\, with an average ERA5 surface air temperature of 15.25°C\, 0.80°C above the 1991-2020 average for October. \nOctober 2024 was 1.65°C above the pre-industrial level and was the 15th month in a 16-month period for which the global-average surface air temperature exceeded 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. The global-average temperature for the past 12 months (November 2023 – October 2024) was 0.74°C above the 1991-2020 average\, and an estimated 1.62°C above the 1850-1900 pre-industrial average. The average global temperature anomaly for the first 10 months of 2024 (January to October) is 0.71°C above the 1991-2020 average\, which is the highest on record for this period and 0.16°C warmer than the same period in 2023.  It is now virtually certain that 2024 will be the warmest year on record. The average temperature anomaly for the rest  of 2024 would have to drop to almost zero for 2024 to not be the warmest year. Given that 2023 was 1.48°C above the pre-industrial level according to ERA5\, it is likewise virtually certain that the annual temperature for 2024 from ERA5 will be more than 1.5°C above the pre-industrial level\, and likely that it will be more than 1.55°C above. \nThe average temperature over European land for October 2024 was 10.83°C\, 1.23°C above the 1991-2020 average for October\, making the month the 5th warmest October on record for Europe. October 2022 is the warmest October on record\, at 1.92°C above average. European temperatures were above average over almost all of the continent. Outside Europe\, temperatures were most above average over northern Canada\, and well-above average over the central and western United States\, northern Tibet\, Japan and Australia. Temperatures were most notably below average over central Greenland and Iceland. The average sea surface temperature (SST) for October 2024 over 60°S–60°N was 20.68°C\, the second-highest value on record for the month\, and only 0.10°C below October 2023. DESCRIPTION:In het Burgerberaad Klimaat kwamen van januari tot september 2025 175 Nederlanders uit alle hoeken van het land\, van 17 tot 87 jaar zeven keer samen. \nZij gaan met elkaar en met deskundigen in gesprek over de vraag: hoe kunnen we als Nederland eten\, spullen gebruiken en reizen op een manier die beter is voor het klimaat? Uiteindelijk komen zij samen tot een advies aan het kabinet. Met een burgerberaad helpen inwoners hun volksvertegenwoordiging om beslissingen te nemen over complexe – vaak polariserende – onderwerpen. Een door loting samengestelde groep burgers doet\, op basis van uitgebreide informatie en overleg\, aanbevelingen over beleid. De deelnemers aan een burgerberaad vormen een dwarsdoorsnede van de samenleving. De uitkomst van een burgerberaad is een gezamenlijk besluit of een set aanbevelingen die door de vraagsteller – meestal de politiek – wordt gebruikt om besluiten te nemen. Een burgerberaad is een aanvulling op de representatieve democratie. Het is een vorm van deliberatieve democratie. In het woord burgerberaad ligt de nadruk op de onderlinge beraadslaging door de deelnemers. In een burgerberaad zitten ongeveer evenveel vrouwen als mannen\, de leeftijdsopbouw weerspiegelt die van de samenleving\, er zitten veel mensen in met een praktische opleiding\, wat minder met een universitaire opleiding\, en ze komen zowel uit dorp als stad. Dit zijn de categorieën waarop bij de gestratificeerde loting wordt geselecteerd. Afhankelijk van de vraagstelling kunnen andere categorieën worden gebruikt. De verdeling tussen de categorieën in de populatie moet bekend zijn uit wetenschappelijk onderzoek of uit een volkstelling. Uit het bevolkingsregister wordt een groot aantal personen door aselecte steekproef geselecteerd en uitgenodigd om deel te nemen\, waarbij hen wordt gevraagd naar de gegevens die nodig zijn voor de indeling categorieën. Uit de geïnteresseerden wordt de gestratificeerde loting uitgevoerd. \nOp 1 december 2025 is het advies van het Nationaal Burgerberaad Klimaat officieel gepresenteerd en overhandigd aan het kabinet\, de nieuwe Tweede Kamer en de rest van Nederland. Tijdens de presentatie werden de dertien aangenomen aanbevelingen toegelicht en gaven de deelnemers een inkijk in het bijzondere proces dat zij samen hebben doorlopen.
