DESCRIPTION:Time lapse images from the camera south of the calving front. a\, 2023-08-24 06:57 UTC\, b\, 2023-08-24 07:17 UTC\nAs glaciers melt\, huge chunks of ice break free and splash into the sea\, generating tsunami-size waves and leaving behind a powerful wake as they drift away. \nThis process\, called calving\, is important for researchers to understand. But the front of a glacier is a dangerous place for data collection.  To solve this problem\, a team of researchers from the University of Washington and collaborating institutions used a fiber-optic cable to capture calving dynamics across the fjord of the Eqalorutsit Kangilliit Sermiat glacier in South Greenland. Data collected from the cable allowed them to document — without getting too close — one of the key processes that is accelerating the rate of glacial mass loss and in turn\, threatening the stability of ice sheets\, with consequences for global ocean currents and local ecosystems.  The data provides\, for the first time\, a deeper look at the relationship between ice and the water it collapses into\, from surface waves to disturbances within the water column. DESCRIPTION:Na overleg met het Koninklijk Nederlands Meteorologisch Instituut (KNMI) heeft het RIVM besloten het Nationaal Hitteplan te activeren. \nDit geldt vanaf dinsdag 12 augustus om 10:00 voor alle Nederlandse provincies. Het doel van deze activering is om een signaal af te geven aan mantelzorgers en (zorg)professionals dat er heet weer op komst is. Dit helpt om hen bewust te maken extra aandacht te hebben voor de mensen waar zij voor zorgen. Zij kunnen daar dan rekening mee houden in de ondersteuning van en omgang met kwetsbare groepen\, zoals ouderen en kleine kinderen. In verband met het Nationaal Hitteplan heeft het KNMI bepaald dat vanaf dinsdag 12 augustus 2025 code geel geldt in alle provincies voor aanhoudende hitte. Vooral in het zuiden\, oosten van Nederland en in stedelijke gebieden is het warm en kan het benauwd aanvoelen. Het minst warm wordt het op de Wadden. Dinsdag is het het warmst in het zuiden met maxima van 33-34°C. Woensdag wordt het landinwaarts vrijwel overal meer dan 30°C en in het oosten plaatselijk 35°C. De nachten verlopen warm met minima tussen 15-20°C en in stedelijke gebieden koelt het niet verder af dan rond 20°C. De nacht naar donderdag verloopt het warmst. Verder is het de lucht vochtig\, waardoor het benauwd kan aanvoelen. Vanaf vrijdag 15 augustus wordt het geleidelijk minder warm en benauwd. \nIn België geeft het KMI een Hittewaarschuwing: De komende dagen blijft het warm door de aanvoer van zeer warme continentale lucht. DESCRIPTION:In het onderzoek ‘Shutdown of northern Atlantic overturning after 2100 following deep mixing collapse in CMIP6 projections‘ werd gekeken hoe de AMOC-sterkte verandert in de IPCC-modelsimulaties tot het jaar 2300. \nIn alle negen simulaties met hoge emissies die dermate lang zijn doorgerekend komt de AMOC tot stilstand. Ook in toekomstprojecties met gemiddelde en lage uitstoot komt dit soms voor. Het stilvallen van de AMOC na 2100 wordt in de modellen voorafgegaan door het stoppen van de verticale menging van water in de Noord-Atlantische Oceaan\, halverwege deze eeuw. Dat lijkt dan ook het kantelpunt te zijn\, waarna het stilvallen van de AMOC onvermijdelijk wordt als gevolg van een zichzelf versterkend proces. DESCRIPTION:Storm Floris was named on 1 August 2025 by the Met Office\, it was also named Ning by Free University of Berlin. \nThis system was expected deliver strong winds and heavy rainfall across the northern half of the country on Monday and early Tuesday the 4 & 5 August. A Yellow wind warning\, issued by the Met Office on Friday\, 1 August\, covered a significant swath of the northern UK. This included Northern Ireland\, north Wales\, northern England\, and the entire expanse of Scotland\, where the most intense winds were anticipated to be recorded. The warning was in effect from 06:00 local time on Monday\, 4 August until 06:00 on Tuesday\, 5 August\, 2025. Many inland areas within this warning zone could experience gusts of 65-80 km/h\, while exposed coastal areas and higher ground in Scotland may see winds reaching 100-120 km/h\, with a small chance of isolated gusts up to 85mph. These conditions\, combined with heavy rain\, could lead to travel disruption\, power cuts\, and potential damage to buildings and trees. In Met Éireann issued yellow wind warnings for north-western counties. \nA day later the Met Office issued an amber wind warning for much of mainland Scotland where gusts were likely to reach 135 to 144 km/h on some exposed coasts\, hills and bridges. The Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute issued a yellow wind warning for large parts of Västra Götaland County and southern Värmland County. During Tuesday windy with strong to very strong gusty winds\, locally storm gusts. Flights from Glasgow Airport to the Scottish islands were cancelled on Monday as the west of the country was battered by strong winds. In all\, Aviation analytics company Cirium said 68 flights from UK airports have been cancelled. In Northern Ireland\, several flights have been cancelled and thousands of homes are without power across the rest of the country after Storm Floris arrived overnight. DESCRIPTION:From July 4 through July 7\, 2025\, a large and deadly flood event took place in the Texas Hill Country\, particularly in Kerr County\, in the U.S. state of Texas. \nDuring the flooding\, water levels along the Guadalupe River rose quickly and significantly when 5–11 inches (130–280 mm) of rain fell in a short amount of time. As a result\, at least 104 fatalities have been confirmed\, of which at least 84 are in Kerr County\, with at least 24 reported missing. The flooding was caused by a mesoscale convective complex partially fed by the remnants of Tropical Storm Barry. Flooding began on the morning of July 4\, after a huge volume of rain fell on Central Texas. Six flash flood emergencies\, which included the cities of Kerrville and Mason\, were issued the same day. The Guadalupe River rose about 26 feet (7.9 m) in 45 minutes. It surged an estimated 29 feet (8.8 m) in the Hunt area\, where more than 20 children were declared missing from a summer camp. July 5 saw more flash flood warnings for the Lake Travis area\, which is part of the Colorado River (Texas) watershed. De buien kunnen zich snel ontwikkelen. Hiervoor is code oranje van kracht in de provincies Limburg\, Gelderland en Overijssel. Er is daardoor kans op overlast voor het verkeer\, buitenactiviteiten zoals (water)sport en evenementen. Door blikseminslag is er kans op brand en schade.\nBelgië:\nDe kans op lokaal zwaar onweer wordt bevestigd in het tweede deel van de namiddag en vanavond voor de oostelijke helft van het land. Iedereen kan klachten krijgen zoals uitdroging en oververhitting\, maar vooral ouderen en mensen met een kwetsbare gezondheid. Doe geen zware lichamelijke activiteiten tussen 12:00 en 18:00. Er is weinig wind\, veel zon en het kan benauwd aanvoelen. Dinsdag wordt het bijna overal tropisch warm (30-34°C)\, met in de zuidelijke helft maximumtemperaturen boven de 35°C\, in het zuiden kan het plaatselijk 38°C worden. In de nacht naar woensdag blijft het in stedelijk gebied en in het zuidoosten erg warm met temperaturen tussen de 20 en 25°C. Woensdag wordt het landinwaarts tropisch warm (30-34°C) met in het zuidoosten en oosten maximumtemperaturen boven de 35°C en plaatselijk kan het opnieuw 38°C worden. Woensdagmiddag koelt het van het westen uit af.\nBelgië:\nZeer warme lucht bevindt zich over het land. Dinsdag verwacht het KMI maxima boven 35 graden op veel plaatsen in het westen en het centrum van het land. Lokaal is 37 graden mogelijk en een zeer lokale 38 graden is geenszins uit te sluiten. Woensdag komt er geleidelijk een wind op gang vanuit het westnoordwesten waardoor koelere lucht het land binnen stroomt. Hierdoor zouden de maxima aan zee beperkt blijven tot zo’n 22 à 23 graden\, elders in het westen tussen 23 en 29 graden. In het centrum verwachten we nog maxima rond 29 à 32 graden. The World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought is observed every year to promote public awareness of international efforts to combat desertification. The day is a unique moment to remind everyone that land degradation neutrality is achievable through problem-solving\, strong community involvement and co-operation at all levels. \nUnder the theme “Restore the land. Unlock the оpportunities”\, the 2025 observance shines a light on how restoring nature’s foundation—land—can create jobs\, boost food and water security\, support climate action and build economic resilience. Healthy land underpins thriving economies\, with over half of global GDP dependent on nature. Yet we are depleting this natural capital at an alarming rate: every minute\, the equivalent of four football fields is lost due to land degradation. This drives biodiversity loss\, increasing drought risk and displacing communities. The ripple effects are global—from rising food prices to instability and migration. Desertification\, land degradation\, and drought are among the most pressing environmental challenges of our time\, with up to 40% of all land area worldwide already considered degraded. As the United Nations Decade on Ecosystem Restoration 2021-2030 marks its halfway point\, we must accelerate efforts to turn the tide of land degradation into large-scale restoration. If current trends continue\, we will need to restore 1.5 billion hectares of land and jumpstart a trillion-dollar land restoration economy by 2030. People living in cities and towns tend to be the hardest hit because urban areas are generally hotter than the surrounding countryside. Due to climate change\, heat waves are on the rise. They are getting both hotter and longer. The report ‘Climate change added average of 26 days of extreme heat over last year‘ co-developed for Heat Action Day 2024 by Climate Central\, World Weather Attribution\, and the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre details how climate change has driven extreme heat in the last 12 months. But they don’t need to lead to tragedy. There are simple actions we can all take to protect ourselves\, our neighbours\, our family members and friends. These include drinking water\, resting in the shade\, and avoiding outdoor activity in the hottest part of the day. Deze duurt dan tot 1 september respectievelijk 1 maart. De zomer kenmerkt zich op het noordelijk halfrond door relatief hoge temperaturen\, langer daglicht en het zo nu en dan voorkomen van onweer. Verder is er in het eerste deel van de zomer veel bloeiende natuur. De zomer is ook het seizoen met de voor de meeste mensen langste vakantie van het jaar: de zomervakantie. SUMMARY:Neerstorten van de Birchgletsjer bij Blatten
DESCRIPTION:Op 28 mei 2025 werd Blatten\, een gemeente en plaats in het Lötschental aan de oevers van Lonza\, in het Zwitserse kanton Wallis\, samen met de omliggende dalbodem voor 90% bedolven door een ijs- en steenlawine van 3 miljoen kubieke meter en nadien ontstond op de dalbodem stroomopwaarts een natuurlijk stuwmeer dat daar overgebleven huizen overstroomde. \nDe lawine bestond uit het omlaagstorten van een groot deel van de Birchgletsjer ten zuiden van het dorp\, die door het afbrokkelen van grote hoeveelheden puin van de hogergelegen top Kleines Nesthorn (3342 meter) instabiel geworden was. Vele huizen werden bedolven en verwoest.
