SUMMARY:Year of Trade Union Climate Action
DESCRIPTION:2025-2026 has been declared the Year of Trade Union Climate Action. \nWorkers everywhere are fighting for action to tackle climate change\, organising to futureproof at-risk jobs\, mobilising to protect vulnerable communities here and abroad\, and sweating for a low-carbon economy that works for workers. Backed by motions at both the 2024 and 2025 TUC Congress\, November sees the start of an important year of UK union action on the climate emergency. On Friday 14 November\, 2025 the Campaign Against Climate Change (CACC) Trade Union Group hopes every union branch in every workplace will demand action to tackle the climate crisis through lunchtime protests\, handing out leaflets\, linking up with community actions\, or raising issues such as working temperatures and air quality at work\, for example. The following day\, events demanding climate action and climate justice will take place across the world to coincide with the COP 30 international climate negotiations in Brazil. The UNISON public services\, Unite general\, NEU education\, PCS public and commercial services\, UCU university and college\, FBU firefighters’ and BFAWU foodworkers’ unions are among those taking part in the year of action. As well as the events on 14 and 15 November\, the NEU will support a National Emergency Briefing on climate and nature in London on 27 November. Eight leading experts will brief 850 politicians and business\, culture and faith leaders\, as well as the media\, with the aim of helping “to trigger a societal tipping point towards emergency-level climate and nature action”. The NEU is also running a series of continuing professional development webinars for members\, while its annual Health\, Safety and Environment Briefing in November includes sessions on clean air\, green bargaining\, and the Climate Ambassadors scheme. The latter\, promoted by the Department for Education\, aims to boost sustainability and climate action in educational settings. In March 2026\, unions in education — the NEU\, UCU\, NAHT and UNISON — will hold a climate and nature festival. This will look at how to support and upskill a just transition\, inspiring climate action in education settings. DESCRIPTION:De aarde warmt op doordat we te veel broeikasgassen uitstoten\, hierdoor stijgen de temperaturen. \nUit de KNMI’23-scenario’s blijkt dat niet alleen de gemiddelde temperatuur stijgt\, maar dat ook de hitte-extremen toenemen. Vooral in sterk versteende gebieden is extreme hitte een probleem. Dit komt door het hitte-eilandeffect. Op deze pagina lees je meer over de oorzaken van de toenemende hitte en het hitte-eilandeffect. De broeikasgassen in de atmosfeer houden de warmtestraling van de zon vast en zorgen voor een ‘natuurlijk’ broeikaseffect. Zonder dit effect zou de gemiddelde temperatuur op aarde 33 graden lager liggen. Door verschillende activiteiten van de mens\, zoals de verbranding van fossiele brandstoffen en ontbossing\, komen er meer broeikasgassen in de atmosfeer\, waaronder CO2. Dit versterkt het broeikaseffect en zorgt voor de opwarming van de aarde. Wereldwijd is de temperatuur rond 2026 ongeveer 1\,5 °C hoger dan in de periode 1850-1900. Voor Nederland is dat nog meer: het Klimaatdashboard van het KNMI laat zien dat de gemiddelde temperatuur in De Bilt sinds 1901 met ongeveer 2\,6 °C gestegen is. Ook zie je dat de gemiddelde temperatuur tussen 2014 en nu sterker lijkt te zijn toegenomen. Volgens de KNMI-klimaatscenario’s neemt de gemiddelde temperatuur in Nederland de komende jaren verder toe. Als je kijkt naar het Klimaatdashboard zal in het meest extreme scenario de temperatuur rond 2050 stijgen tot 12\,1 °C en rond 2100 tot 14\,8 °C. De opwarming is het grootst in de zomer en het kleinst in de winter en de lente. De zomers krijgen meer tropische nachten\, met een minimumtemperatuur van 20°C of hoger. In het extreme scenario neemt in De Bilt het aantal tropische nachten per zomer toe van 0\,3 in het huidige klimaat tot 3 rond 2050 en tot 19 in 2100. Ook komen er meer zomerse dagen\, met een maximumtemperatuur van 25°C of hoger. DESCRIPTION:The 17th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) will be hosted by Mongolia in its capital city\, Ulaanbaatar\, from 17 to 28 August 2026. \nThis landmark global event will bring together delegates from 197 Parties\, heads of state\, ministers\, representatives from international organizations\, scientific communities\, civil society\, and the private sector to forge solutions to the interconnected challenges of desertification\, land degradation and drought. Mongolia\, with a vast territory of 1.56 million square kilometers\, is experiencing land degradation across approximately 76.9 per cent of its land. Recognizing the critical role of land management in addressing the triple environmental crisis\, the country has become a key voice in global efforts to combat desertification and enhance land resilience. Mongolia’s ambitious development agendas—particularly its interconnected national movements on environment and agriculture—position the country as a strategic host for COP17 of the UNCCD. COP17 will be convened in alignment with the United Nations International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP 2026)\, offering a crucial global opportunity to highlight sustainable rangeland management and the needs of more than one billion people who directly depend on these vital ecosystems for their livelihoods. During the two-week conference\, participants will engage in a high-level segment that includes ministerial dialogues\, along with multi-stakeholder forums and thematic discussions on science–policy integration\, innovation\, solutions\, technology\, and financing.
