DESCRIPTION:Op π-dag\, 14 maart\, wordt wereldwijd op verschillende wiskundeafdelingen van universiteiten feest gevierd\, omdat in de Amerikaanse schrijfwijze voor data 14 maart geschreven wordt als 3/14 en de driecijferige benadering voor π 3\,14 is. \nHet getal π\, uitgesproken en soms geschreven als pi\, is een wiskundige constante met in decimale notatie de getalswaarde 3\,141 592 653… Deze waarde is de verhouding van omtrek en diameter van een cirkel. Deze dag wordt op verschillende manieren gevierd. Zo staan sommigen stil bij de rol die π in hun leven gespeeld heeft en proberen zich op humoristische wijze een wereld zonder π voor te stellen. De viering begint gewoonlijk om 13:59 uur (1:59 PM)\, omdat de zescijferige benadering van π 3\,14159 is. Mensen die de 24-uurs klokindeling gebruiken handhaven een ander begin: 1:59 of 15:09. Het “ultieme π-moment” was op 14 maart 1592 om 6:53 en 58 seconden\, omdat dit 3/14/1592 6:53:58 in de Amerikaanse schrijfwijze voor data is. Dit komt overeen met de eerste 12 cijfers van π (3\,14159265358). Op scholen en universiteiten in Amerika begon men een aantal jaren geleden de π-dag te vieren met het eten van taart (in het Engels pie\, ook de letter pi wordt door Engelstaligen zo uitgesproken) of pizza. Of er worden etenswaren gemaakt in de vorm van een π-teken. Ook is er een spel aan verbonden\, kinderen moeten proberen te raden wat het getal van π is met behulp van een cirkel en hun schoen. In oktober 2018 nam de Uitvoerende Raad van Unesco het besluit om 14 maart uit te roepen tot Dag van de wiskunde. Het initiatief om via Unesco een internationale wiskundedag in het leven te roepen komt voort uit het bestuur van de International Mathematical Union (IMU)\, de wereldwijde organisatie voor wiskundigen\, waar vrijwel alle landelijke verenigingen lid van zijn. Ook het Koninklijk Wiskundig Genootschap (KWG)\, de vereniging van Nederlandse wiskundigen\, steunde het voorstel. \nHet is tevens de verjaardag van Albert Einstein (* Ulm\, 14 maart 1879 – + Princeton (New Jersey)\, 18 april 1955)\, een Duits-Zwitsers-Amerikaanse theoretisch natuurkundige. DESCRIPTION:Telefonie of telefoon (Grieks: τήλε (tèle)\, “ver”\, en φωνή (phónè)\, “geluid”) is een telecommunicatiesysteem voor gesprekken tussen personen die zich buiten gehoorbereik van elkaar bevinden. \nHiervoor hebben alle gesprekspartners een telefoontoestel nodig en moet tussen die toestellen een verbinding zijn. Die verbinding kan een directe draadverbinding zijn\, bijvoorbeeld voor een eenvoudige huistelefoon\, maar inmiddels zijn de meeste telefoontoestellen aangesloten op het wereldwijde netwerk van telefooncentrales en zijn veel verbindingen draadloos. De telefonie in de 19e eeuw werd ontwikkeld in minder dan veertig jaar van een plan tot een compleet functionerende\, veelgebruikte telefooncentrale tussen 1854 en 1892. Met elektrische telegrafie konden berichten over lange afstand worden verstuurd\, maar er was tijdverlies tussen de telegrafische boodschap en het antwoord daarop. Bovendien waren er opgeleide telegrafisten nodig. Het lag dus voor de hand dat men naar mogelijkheden zocht om de boodschap mondeling over te brengen. Het eerste uitgewerkte voorstel voor telefonie kwam van de Franse telegrafiebeambte Charles Bourseul. In het tijdschrift L’Illustration van 26 augustus 1854 beschreef hij hoe spraak over een telegrafielijn geleid zou kunnen worden. Hoewel hij ook probeerde om zijn theorie in de praktijk te brengen\, lukte het hem niet om een duidelijk verstaanbaar gesprek ten gehore te brengen. De Duitse natuurkundeleraar Philipp Reis kwam in 1860 met het eerste concept van telefonie. Zijn telefoontoestel – de naam Telephon is van hem afkomstig – bestond uit een opnemer en een weergever die via twee draden met elkaar verbonden waren. De door Reis gemaakte toestellen waren echter niet geschikt voor praktisch gebruik. Hierdoor raakte zijn uitvinding in de vergetelheid. Op 14 februari 1876 werd in de Verenigde Staten door Alexander Graham Bell een patent aangevraagd op de uitvinding voor improvement of telegraphy (“verbetering van de telegrafie”). Enkele jaren daarvoor was het de Italiaanse immigrant Antonio Meucci al gelukt om een telefoonverbinding tot stand te brengen. In 1871 wilde hij zijn ’teletrophone’ patenteren\, maar omdat hij het benodigde geld niet had\, bleef het bij een patentaanvraag\, die al na drie jaar afliep en wegens verder geldgebrek ook niet werd verlengd. Hierdoor was het Bell die op 7 maart het eerste patent op de telefoon verkreeg. Ondanks het patent wilde het apparaat van Bell maar niet functioneren\, totdat hij drie dagen later\, op 10 maart 1876\, per ongeluk een flesje met zuur omstootte. In een reflex riep hij zijn assistent te hulp: “Mr. Watson\, come here. I want to see you.” Thomas Watson\, die in een andere kamer van het huis verbleef en daardoor buiten gehoorafstand was\, kwam direct. DESCRIPTION:Engineering has always had an essential role in development and human welfare\, ensuring that future generations of engineers and scientists will be able to design solutions for local and global challenges is critical. \nUNESCO’s General Conference proclaimed the 4 March World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development during its 40th session in November 2019 (40 C/64)\, to raise awareness of the role of engineering in modern life\, which is essential to mitigate the impact of climate change and advance sustainable development\, especially in Africa and the small island developing states (SIDS). In spite of the importance of engineering for our life and future\, women have been historically underrepresented in engineering fields\, typically making up only 10 – 20% of the engineering work force.  Even in countries where the numbers of women studying STI have increased\, this trend has not translated into more women entering the workplace. Too many female students who graduate do not go into the engineering profession. The barriers are often connected to persistent gender stereotypes in this field\, inadequate policies or educational environments that do not meet their needs and aspirations. UNESCO is placing a high priority on activities that promote awareness of engineering as a career\, as well as on those that demonstrate the importance of youth studying science\, technology\, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The theme of World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development 2026 is “Smart engineering for sustainable future through innovation and digitalization”. \nThe World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO) Hackathon is a key celebration of World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development\, bringing together engineering students and young engineers from around the world to solve real-world challenges. DESCRIPTION:Ada Lovelace Day is an annual event held on the second Tuesday of October to celebrate and raise awareness of the contributions of women to Science\, Technology\, Engineering\, and Mathematics (STEM) fields\, it is named after mathematician and computer science pioneer Ada Lovelace. \nIt started in 2009 as a “day of blogging” and has since become a multi-national event with conferences. The day was founded in the United Kingdom in 2009 by Suw Charman-Anderson on the second Tuesday in October as a means of raising awareness about the contributions of women to STEM fields. In 2022\, Charman-Anderson announced that this would be the last year in which the organization that she founded\, Finding Ada\, would organize an annual flagship Ada Lovelace Day event in England. However\, the Royal Institution stepped in with funding and the organization Ada Lovelace Day has carried on. Since its inception\, Ada Lovelace Day has become international in scope\, with events organized by groups ranging from museums\, professional societies\, universities\, colleges and high schools. While Ada Lovelace Day is the second Tuesday of October\, events celebrating women in STEM typically span the period of October and November\, and include diverse activities ranging from in-person and virtual Wikipedia Editathons to panel discussions and film screenings. While this celebration of the often overlooked contributions of women in STEM was named for Ada Lovelace\, activities have expanded since 2009 to highlight the diverse contributions of women in STEM over time and different countries. Events have featured policy initiatives and scholarship relating to equity\, diversity and inclusion that provide spaces and platforms for dialogue and discussion about how unconscious bias(es) function to create barriers to women’s participation and advancement in the professional fields of STEM. \nLinks:\nAda Lovelace Day

DESCRIPTION:Engineering has always had an essential role in development and human welfare\, ensuring that future generations of engineers and scientists will be able to design solutions for local and global challenges is critical. \nUNESCO’s General Conference proclaimed the 4 March World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development during its 40th session in November 2019 (40 C/64)\, to raise awareness of the role of engineering in modern life\, which is essential to mitigate the impact of climate change and advance sustainable development\, especially in Africa and the small island developing states (SIDS). In spite of the importance of engineering for our life and future\, women have been historically underrepresented in engineering fields\, typically making up only 10 – 20% of the engineering work force.  Even in countries where the numbers of women studying STI have increased\, this trend has not translated into more women entering the workplace. Too many female students who graduate do not go into the engineering profession. The barriers are often connected to persistent gender stereotypes in this field\, inadequate policies or educational environments that do not meet their needs and aspirations. UNESCO is placing a high priority on activities that promote awareness of engineering as a career\, as well as on those that demonstrate the importance of youth studying science\, technology\, engineering and mathematics (STEM). DESCRIPTION:Ada Lovelace Day is an annual event held on the second Tuesday of October to celebrate and raise awareness of the contributions of women to Science\, Technology\, Engineering\, and Mathematics (STEM) fields\, it is named after mathematician and computer science pioneer Ada Lovelace. \nIt started in 2009 as a “day of blogging” and has since become a multi-national event with conferences. The day was founded in the United Kingdom in 2009 by Suw Charman-Anderson on the second Tuesday in October as a means of raising awareness about the contributions of women to science\, technology\, engineering\, and mathematics (STEM) fields. In 2022\, Charman-Anderson announced that this would be the last year in which the organization that she founded\, Finding Ada\, would organize an annual flagship Ada Lovelace Day event in England. However\, the Royal Institution stepped in with funding and the organization Ada Lovelace Day has carried on. Since its inception\, Ada Lovelace Day has become international in scope\, with events organized by groups ranging from museums\, professional societies\, universities\, colleges and high schools. While Ada Lovelace Day is the second Tuesday of October\, events celebrating women in STEM typically span the period of October and November\, and include diverse activities ranging from in-person and virtual Wikipedia Editathons to panel discussions and film screenings. While this celebration of the often overlooked contributions of women in STEM was named for Ada Lovelace\, activities have expanded since 2009 to highlight the diverse contributions of women in STEM over time and different countries. DESCRIPTION:Engineering has always had an essential role in development and human welfare\, ensuring that future generations of engineers and scientists will be able to design solutions for local and global challenges is critical. \nUNESCO’s General Conference proclaimed the 4 March World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development during its 40th session in November 2019 (40 C/64)\, to raise awareness of the role of engineering in modern life\, which is essential to mitigate the impact of climate change and advance sustainable development\, especially in Africa and the small island developing states (SIDS). In spite of the importance of engineering for our life and future\, women have been historically underrepresented in engineering fields\, typically making up only 10 – 20% of the engineering work force.  Even in countries where the numbers of women studying STI have increased\, this trend has not translated into more women entering the workplace. Too many female students who graduate do not go into the engineering profession. The barriers are often connected to persistent gender stereotypes in this field\, inadequate policies or educational environments that do not meet their needs and aspirations. UNESCO is placing a high priority on activities that promote awareness of engineering as a career\, as well as on those that demonstrate the importance of youth studying science\, technology\, engineering and mathematics (STEM). DESCRIPTION:November 18 has been selected to celebrate and highlight the work and barriers of LGBTQIA+ people in Science\, Technology\, Engineering\, and Maths (STEM). \nAmong their many struggles\, we see that 28% of LGBT+ people have at some point considered leaving their jobs because of a hostile workplace or discrimination towards them. 2o% of trans people had often considered leaving (2019 Exploring The Workplace For LGBT+ Physical Scientists)\, which is an abysmally high number. One in three physicists in America has been urged to stay in the closet to progress in their career. Half of the transgender or gender non-conforming physicists were harassed in their own departments (2015 American Physical Society survey). Gay and bisexual students are less likely to follow an academic career (2018 Coming out in STEM: Factors affecting retention of sexual minority STEM students). To these statistics\, we need to add barriers and issues specific to other underrepresented groups\, which create a much bigger challenge for people with intersectional identities. The change of date from July comes after the result of an open survey and months of discussion. The date is symbolic of the 60th anniversary of American Astronomer and gay activist Frank Kameny’s US Supreme Court fight against workplace discrimination. This is a fight that continues today\, not only in the US but in so many other countries worldwide.
