DESCRIPTION:Een derde van alle kankergevallen in Nederland wordt veroorzaakt door een ongezonde leefstijl en leefomgeving\, dat blijkt uit het onderzoek ‘Bijdragen van leefstijl\, leefomgeving\, infecties en reproductie aan kanker in Nederland‘ van TNO in opdracht van KWF Kankerbestrijding. \nMet maatregelen die het makkelijker maken voor mensen om onder andere niet te roken\, gezond te eten en zich goed te beschermen tegen de zon kunnen jaarlijks tot zo’n 40.000 kankergevallen worden voorkomen. Roken blijft met afstand koploper als veroorzaker van kanker in Nederland\, bevestigen de nieuwe cijfers. Jaarlijks kunnen naar schatting 19.095 diagnoses (16% van alle kanker) hieraan toegeschreven worden. Andere belangrijke oorzaken zijn zonblootstelling (5%\, 6.374 gevallen per jaar) en ongezonde voeding (5%\, 6.452). Daarbij gaat het vooral om weinig fruit\, groente en voedingsvezel en te veel bewerkt vlees. Ook kan de overheid wat KWF betreft nog veel doen om het aantal kankergevallen terug te dringen\, zoals het terugbrengen van het aantal verkooppunten van sigaretten. De instantie pleit onder meer voor een reclameverbod op ongezonde voeding en alcohol. Daarnaast zou een gezondere leefstijl gestimuleerd moeten worden. Met deze studie brengen TNO en KWF de meest actuele cijfers voor Nederland. Behalve leefstijlfactoren keken de onderzoekers ook naar omgevingsfactoren (zoals fijnstof)\, infecties (zoals HPV-virus) en reproductieve factoren (zoals het niet geven van borstvoeding). Voor al deze risicofactoren schatten de onderzoekers hoe groot de bijdrage is aan het totaal aantal kankergevallen. DESCRIPTION:November 18 has been selected to celebrate and highlight the work and barriers of LGBTQIA+ people in Science\, Technology\, Engineering\, and Maths (STEM). \nAmong their many struggles\, we see that 28% of LGBT+ people have at some point considered leaving their jobs because of a hostile workplace or discrimination towards them. 2o% of trans people had often considered leaving (2019 Exploring The Workplace For LGBT+ Physical Scientists)\, which is an abysmally high number. One in three physicists in America has been urged to stay in the closet to progress in their career. Half of the transgender or gender non-conforming physicists were harassed in their own departments (2015 American Physical Society survey). Gay and bisexual students are less likely to follow an academic career (2018 Coming out in STEM: Factors affecting retention of sexual minority STEM students). To these statistics\, we need to add barriers and issues specific to other underrepresented groups\, which create a much bigger challenge for people with intersectional identities. The change of date from July comes after the result of an open survey and months of discussion. The date is symbolic of the 60th anniversary of American Astronomer and gay activist Frank Kameny’s US Supreme Court fight against workplace discrimination. This is a fight that continues today\, not only in the US but in so many other countries worldwide. DESCRIPTION:The International Week of Science and Peace was first observed during 1986 as part of the observance of the International Year of Peace. \nThe organization of events and activities for the week was undertaken as a non-governmental initiative; the secretariat for the International Year of Peace was informed of the preparatory activities and the final summary of events that occurred during the week. The organizers sought to encourage the broadest possible international participation in the observance. Based on the success of the 1986 observance\, the organizers continued their efforts in successive years. In recognition of the value of the annual observance\, the General Assembly adopted resolution 43/61 in December 1988\, which proclaims the “International Week of Science and Peace”\, to take place each year during the week in which 11 November falls. The General Assembly urged Member States and intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations to encourage relevant institutions\, associations and individuals to sponsor events and activities related to the study and dissemination of information on the links between progress in science and technology and maintenance of peace and security; urged Member States to promote international co-operation among scientists and required the Secretary-General to report to the General Assembly as its forty-fifth session on the activities and initiatives of Member States and interested organizations in connection with the week. The annual observance of the International Week of Science and Peace is making an important contribution to the promotion of peace. The Week encourages greater academic exchanges on a subject of universal importance while also generating greater awareness of the relationship of science and peace among the general public. DESCRIPTION:Carl Edward Sagan (/ˈseɪɡən/; November 9\, 1934 – December 20\, 1996) was an American astronomer\, cosmologist\, astrophysicist\, astrobiologist\, author\, science popularizer\, and science communicator in astronomy and other natural sciences. \nHe is best known for his work as a science popularizer and communicator. His best known scientific contribution is research on extraterrestrial life\, including experimental demonstration of the production of amino acids from basic chemicals by radiation. Sagan assembled the first physical messages sent into space: the Pioneer plaque and the Voyager Golden Record\, universal messages that could potentially be understood by any extraterrestrial intelligence that might find them. Sagan argued the now accepted hypothesis that the high surface temperatures of Venus can be attributed to and calculated using the greenhouse effect. \nSagan published more than 600 scientific papers and articles and was author\, co-author or editor of more than 20 books. He wrote many popular science books\, such as The Dragons of Eden\, Broca’s Brain and Pale Blue Dot\, and narrated and co-wrote the award-winning 1980 television series Cosmos: A Personal Voyage. The most widely watched series in the history of American public television\, Cosmos has been seen by at least 500 million people across 60 different countries. The book Cosmos was published to accompany the series. He also wrote the science fiction novel Contact\, the basis for a 1997 film of the same name. His papers\, containing 595\,000 items\, are archived at The Library of Congress. \nSagan advocated scientific skeptical inquiry and the scientific method\, pioneered exobiology and promoted the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI). He spent most of his career as a professor of astronomy at Cornell University\, where he directed the Laboratory for Planetary Studies. Sagan and his works received numerous awards and honors\, including the NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal\, the National Academy of Sciences Public Welfare Medal\, the Pulitzer Prize for General Non-Fiction for his book The Dragons of Eden\, and\, regarding Cosmos: A Personal Voyage\, two Emmy Awards\, the Peabody Award\, and the Hugo Award. He married three times and had five children. In recent decades several instruments have come online to conduct different experiments to test and enable us to glean more insights into theories and improve our understanding of the universe at large. The MeerKAT dishes in South Africa make a star appearance\, contributing towards this goal of ground-breaking science\, with its highly sensitive receivers for radio wave observations. The need for equally matching control system software in scale and performance cannot be emphasised enough with the arrival of these powerful instruments. This sets the stage to introduce the theme for this year’s conference as “Accelerating Control Systems Software for Ground-breaking Science”. Sharing improvements and advances in work with the community\, this conference is a unique learning opportunity to be equipped to produce novel work and support the effort to churn out ground-breaking scientific work. DESCRIPTION:De ozonlaag is een dun laagje gas dat ligt tussen de 15 en 50 kilometer hoogte en als een ring om onze aarde zit met als belangrijkste eigenschap; het beschermt ons tegen de schadelijke straling (ultraviolette straling) die afkomstig is van de zon. \nZonder de ozonlaag is leven op aarde niet mogelijk. Door vervuiling wordt de ozonlaag steeds dunner. Hierdoor lopen mensen meer kans op huidkanker en staar. Om gezamenlijk te proberen het ozongat niet groter te laten worden werd op 22 maart 1985 het Verdrag van Wenen aangenomen dat door 28 landen ondertekend. Op 16 september 1987 heeft dit geleid tot het opstellen van het Montrealprotocol (Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer). Het is geratificeerd door elke lidstaat van de Verenigde Naties (197); de Europese Unie\, alle 193 leden van de Verenigde Naties\, Vaticaanstad\, Cookeilanden en Niue. Het Montrealprotocol laat zien dat mondiaal afspraken maken over het milieubeleid duidelijk zin heeft. We moeten nog wel een tijd wachten voordat de ozonlaag helemaal hersteld is maar vermoedelijk zal tegen 2050 de ozonlaag hersteld zijn tot het niveau van 1960. Plak er nog een 20 tot 30 jaar aan vast en dan moet de ozonlaag toch praktisch hersteld zijn.
