DESCRIPTION:De verkiezing Insect van het Jaar wordt sinds 2022 georganiseerd door Taxon Foundation in samenwerking met EIS Kenniscentrum Insecten\, de Nederlandse Entomologische Vereniging en Naturalis Biodiversity Center. \nOnderzoekers van Naturalis\, EIS en Taxon hebben op basis van honderden inzendingen een shortlist gekozen. Ze selecteerden hun favoriet uit de lijst en zo zijn de vaakst gemarkeerde insecten op de shortlist terechtgekomen. Dat is waarschijnlijk ook de reden dat er -behalve misschien de veldkrekel- bijna geen één van de op de shortlist gezette insecten bekend is bij een groot publiek. Op 14 april 2024 wordt in het radioprogramma Vroege Vogels de uitslag bekendgemaakt tijdens een speciale uitzending in museum Naturalis. De winnaar krijgt geen wisselbokaal\, maar extra aandacht en een wetenschappelijk onderzoek naar die soort. DESCRIPTION:In 2024 kun je weer helpen met het in kaart brengen van de biodiversiteit van de Nederlandse wateren door waterdiertjes te tellen en je waarnemingen door te geven. \nIn 2024 wordt één van deze waterdieren extra in het zonnetje gezet: de kokerjuffer\, de larve van de schietmot. Deze beestjes zijn niet alleen belangrijk voor de wetenschap omdat ze ons iets vertellen over de waterkwaliteit\, maar zijn ook ontzettend leuk om te vangen omdat ze prachtige kokertjes bouwen. Kokerjuffers gebruiken verschillende materialen om hun koker te bouwen. Voor de wetenschap is het super interessant om te zien welke materialen kokerjuffers gebruiken om hun huisjes te bouwen. Daarom kan jij zes verschillende type materialen doorgeven. Naast de kokerjuffer met koker is er ook een kokerjuffer zonder koker. Ondanks dat de naam ‘kokerjuffer’ doet vermoeden dat elke soort kokerjuffer een koker bouwt\, zijn er ook kokerjuffers zonder koker\, ook wel naakte kokerjuffers genoemd. Het leven van kokerjuffers begint als een pakketje met eitjes die door de schietmot wordt afgezet in of in de buurt van water. Deze eitjes ontwikkelen zich tot larven\, de kokerjuffers. \nKokerjuffers voeden zich met algen\, bladeren\, watervlooien of andere waterdiertjes. Ze vervellen vier keer voordat ze volgroeid zijn en hun huisje afsluiten met spinsel en materialen. Vervolgens verpoppen ze zich in drie tot vier weken. Na een paar weken is de pop een schietmot geworden. Het diertje bevrijdt zich uit de koker en vliegt er vandoor. Door zijn koker gaat hij helemaal op in zijn omgeving en is het moeilijk voor vijanden om hem te spotten. Kokerjuffers vervellen vier keer voordat ze hun huisje afsluiten met spinsel en materialen. Vervolgens verpoppen ze binnen drie tot vier weken. Na deze transformatieperiode verschijnt de kokerjuffer als een schietmot\, die zich uit zijn koker bevrijdt en wegvliegt. Not since the World Wide Web emerged 30 years ago has a new technology promised to change our world so fundamentally and so swiftly as AI does.  Today’s AI tools such as ChatGPT and AlphaGo are just a hint of what is to come. The future of AI is going to be quite a journey\, and the 2023 CHRISTMAS LECTURES to be broadcast on BBC Four and iPlayer in late December\, will give us a guided tour. \nAI has increasingly grabbed the headlines in recent years – generating excitement and concern in equal measure – but what should we believe? In these lectures Mike will reveal how AI works and how it will affect our lives – and will tackle head-on our hopes and fears for this most fascinating of fields. Throughout the three Lectures\, Mike will explore the big questions facing AI research and unravel the myths about how this ground-breaking technology really works. How can a machine be taught to play a game or translate from one language to another? He will show how computer programmes inspired by the human brain can be taught and even teach themselves. DESCRIPTION:An eruption is ongoing since 23 December 2023 in Lewotobi\, twin volcano (Lewotobi Laki-laki (Male Lewotobi) and Lewotobi Perempuan (Female Lewotobi) stratovolcanoes) located in the southeastern part of the island of Flores\, Indonesia\, displacing up to 6\,500 people as of January 2024. \nOn 4 November 2024\, the volcano spewed molten debris at several villages some 4 kilometers (km) away\, destroying homes and killing at least nine. DESCRIPTION:Het Woord van het jaar verwijst naar een nieuw woord dat met behulp van een verkiezing wordt uitgekozen als het meest kenmerkende of belangrijkste woord dat de gebeurtenissen van een jaar karakteriseert. \nDe eerste Nederlandse verkiezing voor Woord van het jaar is in 2003 opgezet door Koen Gubbels van vertaalbureau The Language Lab in Amsterdam. De Nederlandse versie werd geïnspireerd door al bestaande Amerikaanse verkiezingen als de Word of the year-verkiezing van de American Dialect Soceity en Merriam-Webster’s Words of the Year. De bedoeling was aan de hand van neologismen of oude woorden die ineens weer in zwang raakten een beeld te geven van gebeurtenissen die hun stempel drukten op een bepaald jaar. In juni 2006 besloot de redactie van The Language Lab door financiële en organisatorische redenen de website op te heffen\, waarna in 2007 Van Dale in samenwerking met dagblad De Pers en het Genootschap Onze Taal de verkiezing overnamen. Voor die verkiezing werd er een voorselectie werd gemaakt van de genomineerde woorden waaruit door sitebezoekers een favoriet werd gekozen. Sinds de editie van 2010 werden de uitslagen voortaan gescheiden in een Nederlands en in een Vlaams deel\, werd de uitslag beperkt tot drie woorden en kon er ook worden gestemd in verschillende categorieën. In 2018 besloot Van Dale om te stoppen met de nevencategorieën en de verkiezing te beperken tot een algemene uitslag van drie woorden. Iedereen kon nieuwe woorden uit 2023 insturen. DESCRIPTION:Running since 2007\, the Quality of life in European cities survey provides a unique insight into city life\, it gathers the experiences and opinions of city dwellers across Europe. \nResults from the 2023 survey shows that overall satisfaction across European cities remains high\, with almost nine out of ten people reporting to be satisfied with living in their city. Results also confirms significant improvements in perceived quality of life in cities in eastern Member States. While capital cities are perceived as offering more opportunities for jobs\, smaller cities are perceived as a better place to live\, especially for older people\, and for families with young children. People feel safer walking alone at night in smaller cities\, and they perceive their city as being cleaner and less noisy than people living in larger cities. On average\, people in non-capital cities are more satisfied with the availability of public spaces and health care\, and with housing. Non-capital cities are also seen as a better place to live for migrants and for families with young children\, and people in non-capital cities are more satisfied with their local public administration. Interactive maps and charts are available below. DESCRIPTION:NEMO Science Museum is een wetenschap- en technologiemuseum in Amsterdam. \nHet motto van NEMO is Hands On! De objecten in NEMO zijn vaak experimentele opstellingen waarbij de bezoeker zelf een wetenschappelijk verschijnsel kan onderzoeken op het gebied van biologie\, natuurkunde\, scheikunde en gedragswetenschappen. Het museum wil jongeren door experimenten enthousiasmeren voor wetenschap en techniek. NEMO begon op 8 december 1923 als Museum van den Arbeid\, opgericht door schilder Herman Heijenbrock. De naam veranderde in 1954 in het NINT (Nederlands Instituut voor Nijverheid en Techniek). De voorgangers van NEMO waren gehuisvest op de Rozengracht en de Tolstraat in Amsterdam. In 1997 werd NewMetropolis (NEMO) geopend in het huidige – groene – gebouw aan het Oosterdok boven op de IJtunnel\, dat na financiële problemen in 2000 een doorstart maakte onder de nieuwe naam Science Center NEMO. Een eeuw lang nieuwsgierig — en dat wordt gevierd\, met verrassende experimenten\, workshops\, demonstraties\, de NEMO Science Tour\, Science Spektakel\, en het Festival van de Nieuwsgierigheid. Nieuwsgierigheid\, zelf ontdekken en spelenderwijs leren: ze lopen als vuurrode draden door de geschiedenis van het museum. Er zijn nu eenmaal nieuwsgierige mensen nodig om creatieve oplossingen te vinden voor uitdagingen van de toekomst. En nieuwsgierigheid is niet alleen goed\, het is ook leuk. DESCRIPTION:Het Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek (CBS) meet sinds 2020 de brede welvaart op regionaal niveau. \nDe regionale Monitor Brede Welvaart wordt gemaakt in opdracht van het ministerie van Ministerie van Binnenlandse Zaken en Koninkrijksrelaties. In deze monitor worden 42 indicatoren gebruikt om de brede welvaart ‘hier en nu’ en ‘later’ in kaart te brengen voor gemeenten\, provincies en COROP-gebieden. Samen geven deze indicatoren een breed beeld van de staat en ontwikkeling van de regionale kwaliteit van leven. Brede welvaart ‘hier en nu‘ gaat over de kwaliteit van leven en van de omgeving waarin mensen leven. Dit betreft welzijn\, materiële welvaart\, gezondheid\, arbeid en vrije tijd\, wonen\, samenleving\, veiligheid en milieu. Brede welvaart ‘later‘ betreft de sociale\, economische\, menselijke en natuurlijke hulpbronnen die volgende generaties nodig hebben om eenzelfde niveau van brede welvaart te kunnen bereiken als de huidige generatie. Voornaamste observaties: \n\nDe trendmatige ontwikkeling van de brede welvaart ‘hier en nu’ en ‘later’ is over de periode 2015-2022 overwegend positief. Materiële welvaart en arbeid en vrije tijd zijn vrijwel overal toegenomen.\nGemeenten die vaker onderaan de ranglijst van indicatoren staan\, hebben meestal ook minder positieve trends.\nRegionale verschillen in brede welvaart zijn niet veranderd in vergelijking met 2022.\nBrede welvaart ‘hier en nu’ is relatief hoog in grote delen van Zuid-Holland\, Utrecht\, Overijssel en het oostelijke deel van Noord-Brabant\, relatief laag in een aantal grote steden\, en relatief laag in het oosten van Groningen en Drenthe\, Limburg\, Zeeland\, en de Kop van Noord-Holland.\nEr is een groot verschil in brede welvaart ‘hier en nu’ tussen gemeentes met de hoogste brede welvaart en gemeentes met de laagste brede welvaart. DESCRIPTION:Nobel Week 2023 vindt plaats op 6–12 december in Stockholm en Oslo. \nSinds 1901 vindt de ceremoniële uitreiking van de ‪Nobelprijzen jaarlijks plaats op 10 december\, de sterfdag van Alfred Nobel. De Nobelprijs bestaat uit een medaille\, een persoonlijk certificaat en een geldbedrag. Als meer dan één persoon een Nobelprijs wint zal het prijzengeld door het evenredige aantal winnaars gedeeld worden. Alfred Bernhard Nobel (1833-1896) was een Zweeds chemicus\, internationaal industrieel\, dichter en filantroop. Het bekendst is zijn uitvinding van het ‪dynamiet in 1866. Nobel schreef in zijn testament dat van de rente van zijn kapitaal\, circa 32 miljoen Zweedse kronen\, elk jaar op zijn sterfdag vijf Nobelprijzen moesten worden uitgereikt. Die prijzen moesten gaan naar personen die zich verdienstelijk hebben gemaakt voor de mensheid\, voor bijzondere vondsten\, ontdekkingen\, onderzoeken\, verrichtingen en aangelegenheden op diverse wetenschappelijke gebieden. In 1968 besloot de Zweedse Rijksbank een prijs toe te voegen aan de vijf categorieën ter nagedachtenis aan Alfred Nobel. DESCRIPTION:Een derde van alle kankergevallen in Nederland wordt veroorzaakt door een ongezonde leefstijl en leefomgeving\, dat blijkt uit het onderzoek ‘Bijdragen van leefstijl\, leefomgeving\, infecties en reproductie aan kanker in Nederland‘ van TNO in opdracht van KWF Kankerbestrijding. \nMet maatregelen die het makkelijker maken voor mensen om onder andere niet te roken\, gezond te eten en zich goed te beschermen tegen de zon kunnen jaarlijks tot zo’n 40.000 kankergevallen worden voorkomen. Roken blijft met afstand koploper als veroorzaker van kanker in Nederland\, bevestigen de nieuwe cijfers. Jaarlijks kunnen naar schatting 19.095 diagnoses (16% van alle kanker) hieraan toegeschreven worden. Andere belangrijke oorzaken zijn zonblootstelling (5%\, 6.374 gevallen per jaar) en ongezonde voeding (5%\, 6.452). Daarbij gaat het vooral om weinig fruit\, groente en voedingsvezel en te veel bewerkt vlees. Ook kan de overheid wat KWF betreft nog veel doen om het aantal kankergevallen terug te dringen\, zoals het terugbrengen van het aantal verkooppunten van sigaretten. De instantie pleit onder meer voor een reclameverbod op ongezonde voeding en alcohol. Daarnaast zou een gezondere leefstijl gestimuleerd moeten worden. Met deze studie brengen TNO en KWF de meest actuele cijfers voor Nederland. Behalve leefstijlfactoren keken de onderzoekers ook naar omgevingsfactoren (zoals fijnstof)\, infecties (zoals HPV-virus) en reproductieve factoren (zoals het niet geven van borstvoeding). Voor al deze risicofactoren schatten de onderzoekers hoe groot de bijdrage is aan het totaal aantal kankergevallen. DESCRIPTION:November 18 has been selected to celebrate and highlight the work and barriers of LGBTQIA+ people in Science\, Technology\, Engineering\, and Maths (STEM). \nAmong their many struggles\, we see that 28% of LGBT+ people have at some point considered leaving their jobs because of a hostile workplace or discrimination towards them. 2o% of trans people had often considered leaving (2019 Exploring The Workplace For LGBT+ Physical Scientists)\, which is an abysmally high number. One in three physicists in America has been urged to stay in the closet to progress in their career. Half of the transgender or gender non-conforming physicists were harassed in their own departments (2015 American Physical Society survey). Gay and bisexual students are less likely to follow an academic career (2018 Coming out in STEM: Factors affecting retention of sexual minority STEM students). To these statistics\, we need to add barriers and issues specific to other underrepresented groups\, which create a much bigger challenge for people with intersectional identities. The change of date from July comes after the result of an open survey and months of discussion. The date is symbolic of the 60th anniversary of American Astronomer and gay activist Frank Kameny’s US Supreme Court fight against workplace discrimination. This is a fight that continues today\, not only in the US but in so many other countries worldwide. It also underscores the role scientists play in broadening our understanding of the planet we call home and in making our societies more sustainable.\nThe objectives of World Science Day for Peace and Development are to: \n\nStrengthen public awareness on the role of science for peaceful and sustainable societies;\nPromote national and international solidarity for shared science between countries;\nRenew national and international commitment for the use of science for the benefit of societies;\nDraw attention to the challenges faced by science and raising support for the scientific endeavour.\n\nIndividuals and institutions around the world are encouraged to organize an event or activity on World Science Day\, including government officials\, students\, the media and school pupils. World Science Day for Peace and Development has generated many concrete projects\, programmes and funding for science around the world. SUMMARY:Week of Science and Peace 2023
DESCRIPTION:The International Week of Science and Peace was first observed during 1986 as part of the observance of the International Year of Peace. \nThe organization of events and activities for the week was undertaken as a non-governmental initiative; the secretariat for the International Year of Peace was informed of the preparatory activities and the final summary of events that occurred during the week. The organizers sought to encourage the broadest possible international participation in the observance. Based on the success of the 1986 observance\, the organizers continued their efforts in successive years. In recognition of the value of the annual observance\, the General Assembly adopted resolution 43/61 in December 1988\, which proclaims the “International Week of Science and Peace”\, to take place each year during the week in which 11 November falls. The General Assembly urged Member States and intergovernmental and non-governmental organizations to encourage relevant institutions\, associations and individuals to sponsor events and activities related to the study and dissemination of information on the links between progress in science and technology and maintenance of peace and security; urged Member States to promote international co-operation among scientists and required the Secretary-General to report to the General Assembly as its forty-fifth session on the activities and initiatives of Member States and interested organizations in connection with the week. The annual observance of the International Week of Science and Peace is making an important contribution to the promotion of peace. The Week encourages greater academic exchanges on a subject of universal importance while also generating greater awareness of the relationship of science and peace among the general public. Based on observances of Science and Peace Week to date\, it may be expected that participation each year will increase\, contributing to greater international understanding and opportunities for co-operation in the applications of science for the promotion of peace throughout the year. \nLinks:\nWeek of Science and Peace
