SUMMARY:Fentale Volcano - signs of possible eruption 2024 - 2025
DESCRIPTION:Starting from late September 2024\, Ethiopia has experienced series of earthquakes ranging from 4.8 to 5.8 Richter magnitude scale with initial epicenter from Afar Region‘s Awash Fentale and spread across much of central Ethiopia. \nOn 6 October 2024\, a series of earthquakes with 4.9-magnitude tremor occurred starting to Afar Region‘s Awash Fentale area and spread into Oromia Region\, causing widespread concern. The epicenter was about 23 km northeast of Awash as the tremor occurred at the depth of 10 km and the shaking was felt across central Ethiopia. Over 30 homes collapsed in Afar while thousands fled to neighboring area as refuge. Pubic officials responded by shutdown of transportation infrastructure in the tremor zone to investigate the damage and power outages were likely to be measured. On 13 October\, a magnitude of 4.6 quake happened in Oromia Region at around 07:37. The shaking affected throughout central and eastern Ethiopia\, such as southern Afar\, southern Amhara\, and central Oromia regions\, northwestern Somali Region\, and the capital Addis Ababa. Also on 16 October\, an earthquake was observed in Metehara area in Oromia at 23:11 local time with 4.8 magnitude registered. The Volcano Discovery discovered that the tremor struck at the shallow depth of 10 km beneath the Earth surface. The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) was the first to detail seismic event\, providing crucial data for understanding its effects. According to initial reports\, residents nearby the epicenter were likely saw a quake\, though caused minimal damage. \nOn 29 December\, an earthquake reoccurred in afternoon and until in the morning 5.1 magnitude. Prior to this\, two earthquakes occurred in a week. In January 2025\, 10 earthquakes were recorded within 24 hours in a week. According to the US Geological Survey\, these multiple quakes were 4.3 to 5.1 on the Richter scale occurred around Fentale volcano in Awash. Since 3 January 2025\, signs of a volcanic eruption began to appear\, prompting authorities to move residents to temporary shelters. The Ethiopian Geological Institute posted a video in Facebook page depicting dust and smoke emerging from a volcano in Awash Fentale in Afar region. On that day\, another quake strike with the magnitude 5.8 in epicenter of Addis Ababa. DESCRIPTION:Een broodje sprinkhaan\, krekel-saté of een vliegenlarvenschotel: is dat de toekomst? \nVolgens hoogleraar entomologie Marcel Dicke van de Wageningen Universiteit zou dat zomaar kunnen. Op zaterdag 28 september 2024 organiseert Dicke een groot publieksevenement over het eten van insecten. Als voedsel voor mensen\, maar ook voor dieren in de veehouderij\, zoals kippen. Niet iedereen wordt blij van dit toekomstbeeld. Martijn van Loon\, promovendus in de milieu-en dierethiek\, heeft enorme twijfels bij het grootschalig kweken van insecten voor de voedselvoorziening. Zowel Dicke als Van Loon zijn betrokken bij het onderzoeksproject InsectFeed\, dat werd geleid door Wageningen University & Research. Hierin is onderzocht in hoeverre insecten een rol kunnen spelen als voedsel voor dieren in de pluimveesector. En of het ethisch wenselijk is. Wat blijkt? De kippen zijn dol op de vliegenlarven\, die ze krijgen aangeboden. Volgens Dicke hebben de vogels in vrijwel de hele Nederlandse pluimveesector een vegetarisch dieet\, terwijl ze van nature ook insecten eten. \nUit het onderzoek blijkt dat het welzijn van de kippen erop vooruitgaat als er insecten op het menu staan. Het is volgens Dicke ook duurzamer dan de soja en mais\, die de dieren meestal voorgeschoteld krijgen: ‘Soja importeren we vooral uit Zuid-Amerika. Dit zorgt voor een grote klimaatvoetafdruk’. Niet iedereen wordt blij van het idee dat we in de toekomst massaal insecten kweken voor vee en mens. Volgens Martijn van Loon is het grootschalig kweken van insecten voor bijvoorbeeld kippen helemaal niet zo duurzaam. Zo moeten die vliegenlarven constant warm gehouden worden om te blijven groeien. Verder vindt hij dat het ook ethisch niet wenselijk is om insecten op grote te schaal te doden voor voedsel. Zeker ook omdat er steeds meer wetenschappelijk bewijs is over de complexiteit van het gedrag van insecten. DESCRIPTION:Day for Universal Access to Information:\nThe Day for Universal Access to Information (IDUAI) was proclaimed on 15 October 2019 at the 74th UN General Assembly to be held on 28 September. \nInitially the day (commonly called the Access to Information Day) was designated by the UNESCO General Conference. It was inaugurated in November 2015 and was first held on 28 September 2016. The day had been recognised as International Right to Know Day since 2002 and was developed by international civil society advocates beginning in 2012. The UNESCO resolution creating the day was pushed by African civil society groups seeking greater information transparency. Currently only 17 African Union member states have adopted national right to information laws\, and groups like Open Government Partnership hope that the recognition of the right to information will “provide an important platform for all stakeholders at national level to discuss the adoption and effective implementation of national right to information laws in line with continental and international standards and obligations.” However\, African civil society groups like MISA Zimbabwe have noted that states like Zimbabwe which do have Right to Information laws still have a long way to go to ensure they improve governance. In 2016\, MISA Zimbabwe used Access to Information Day to criticise Zimbabwe’s poor information transparency provisions\, noting that\, “While Zimbabwe was one of the first African countries to adopt an access to information law in the form of the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act (AIPPA)\, the law in question is a far cry from its purported import and impact.” \nRight To Know Day:\nThe decision to celebrate and promote 28 September as the International Right to Know Day was taken on the last day of a Freedom of Information litigation conference held 26-28 September 2002 in Sofia\, Bulgaria. \nRepresentatives of Freedom of Information (FOI) organizations from 15 countries took part – Albania\, Armenia\, Bosnia and Herzegovina\, Bulgaria\, Georgia\, Hungary\, India\, Latvia\, Macedonia\, Mexico\, Moldova\, Rumania\, Slovakia\, South Africa\, and USA\, as well as representatives of international organizations active in the FOI field. On 28 September 2002\, the FOI activists established the International Freedom of Information Advocates Network (FOIAnet)\, Access to Information Programme (AIP) being its co-founder and active member. The members of the newly found FOIAnet agreed to collaborate in promotion of the individual right of access to information and open\, transparent governance and adopted a Memorandum setting forth the goals and activities of the network. Today\, the members of the FOIAnet are over 200 organizations and civil groups from around the globe which exchange knowledge and experience and undertake international initiatives for better freedom of information standards. \nFOI activists around the globe organize a variety of events and initiatives on 28 September to raise awareness on the right of information and to campaign for open\, democratic societies in which there is full citizen empowerment and participation in government. Conferences\, trainings\, competitions\, awards ceremonies\, rock and pop concerts\, theatre performances\, movies\, launch of info-requesting campaigns and new web sites\, focused publications\, etc. aim to further promote this fundamental human right and encourage citizens\, journalists and NGOs in their search for government held information. DESCRIPTION:Earth may have had a ring during the middle Ordovician\, from ca. 466 Ma\, breakup of an asteroid passing within Earth’s Roche limit likely formed the ring. \nAmong several features preserved is a near-equatorial band of impact craters. Shading of Earth by the ring may have triggered a global icehouse period. The sientists suggested in the report ‘Evidence suggesting that earth had a ring in the Ordovician‘ that a large L chondrite asteroid had a near miss encounter with Earth at ca. 466 Ma\, which caused it to break up as it passed through Earth’s Roche limit. This can explain why sedimentary rocks from this time contain 99 % L chondrite material at abundances 2–3 orders of magnitude above background\, with extremely brief Cosmic-ray Exposure Ages of Meteorites (CRE ages). They have further suggested that the resulting fragments formed a debris ring that decayed over several tens of millions of years resulting in an anomalous spike in impact cratering rate. This hypothesis may explain why all impact structures from this time are located proximal to the equator; impacts from bodies originating in the asteroid belt are expected to be randomly distributed across the globe. We have estimated the probability that this impact structure distribution resulted from random unrelated impactors at 1 in 25 million. Deze bijzondere diepzeegolven\, waar nog weinig over bekend is\, kunnen vier keer steiler worden dan voor mogelijk werd gehouden\, blijkt uit het onderzoek “Three-dimensional wave breaking” van het onderzoeksconsortium bestaande uit de University of Oxford\, University of Edinburgh\, University of Manchester\, University College Dublin\, Ecole Normale Supérieure Paris-Saclay en de TU Delft dat is gepubliceerd is Nature. \nLang geleden gingen er verhalen rond over mysterieuze monstergolven die uit het niets leken te ontstaan en zelfs grote schepen omverhaalden. Het mythische karakter werd verleden tijd toen zo’n monstergolf voor het eerst werd vastgelegd bij het Draupner platform in de Noordzee. In 2018 lukte het Ton van den Bremer en zijn collega’s bij de Universiteiten van Edinburgh en Oxford om voor het eerst ooit deze Draupner-golf na te bootsen in het lab. Dit bood hen de kans om de golf nauwkeurig te bestuderen. DESCRIPTION:De ozonlaag is een dun laagje gas dat ligt tussen de 15 en 50 kilometer hoogte en als een ring om onze aarde zit met als belangrijkste eigenschap; het beschermt ons tegen de schadelijke straling (ultraviolette straling) die afkomstig is van de zon. \nZonder de ozonlaag is leven op aarde niet mogelijk. Door vervuiling wordt de ozonlaag steeds dunner. Hierdoor lopen mensen meer kans op huidkanker en staar. Om gezamenlijk te proberen het ozongat niet groter te laten worden werd op 22 maart 1985 het Verdrag van Wenen aangenomen dat door 28 landen ondertekend. Op 16 september 1987 heeft dit geleid tot het opstellen van het Montrealprotocol (Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer). Het is geratificeerd door elke lidstaat van de Verenigde Naties (197); de Europese Unie\, alle 193 leden van de Verenigde Naties\, Vaticaanstad\, Cookeilanden en Niue. Het Montrealprotocol laat zien dat mondiaal afspraken maken over het milieubeleid duidelijk zin heeft. We moeten nog wel een tijd wachten voordat de ozonlaag helemaal hersteld is maar vermoedelijk zal tegen 2050 de ozonlaag hersteld zijn tot het niveau van 1960. Plak er nog een 20 tot 30 jaar aan vast en dan moet de ozonlaag toch praktisch hersteld zijn. DESCRIPTION:The Ig Nobel Prize (/ˌɪɡnoʊˈbɛl/ IG-noh-BEL) is a satiric prize awarded annually since 1991 to celebrate ten unusual or trivial achievements in scientific research. \nIts aim is to “honor achievements that first make people laugh\, and then make them think.” The name of the award is a pun on the Nobel Prize\, which it parodies\, and on the word ignoble. Organized by the scientific humor magazine Annals of Improbable Research (AIR)\, the Ig Nobel Prizes are presented by Nobel laureates in a ceremony at the Sanders Theater at Harvard University\, and are followed by the winners’ public lectures at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). \nThe 2024 Ig Nobel Prizes were awarded at the 34th First Annual Ig Nobel Prize ceremony\, on Thursday evening\, September 12\, 2024\, at MIT in Cambridge\, Massachusetts. Ook is een microchip aanwezig in een betaalkaart\, de OV-chipkaart en in transponders die gebruikt worden om huisdieren te kunnen identificeren. De eerste werkende geïntegreerde schakeling werd op 12 september 1958 door Jack Kilby van Texas Instruments gepresenteerd. Vier maanden later deed Robert Noyce van Fairchild Semiconductor een soortgelijke uitvinding. Hoewel Noyce later was dan Kilby werd de patentenstrijd uiteindelijk in 1969 in het voordeel van Noyce beslist. De uitvinding van de geïntegreerde schakeling heeft een vergaande miniaturisatie van alle elektronische apparatuur mogelijk gemaakt. DESCRIPTION:De campagne ‘Water op de kaart’ van het Nederlands Instituut voor Ecologie (NIOO-KNAW) en de stichting Natuur & Milieu moet een beeld gaan geven van de kwaliteit van water rond een riooloverstort. \nZo’n 40 burgerwetenschappers verspreid over Nederland gaan in hun eigen buurt monsters nemen van de zogenaamde kleine oppervlaktewateren: de sloten of vijvers om de hoek. Dat water blijkt namelijk van niet zo’n goeie kwaliteit. Bij hevige plensbuien\, die in toenemende mate voorkomen\, komt het riool vol met water te zitten en stroomt het over naar omliggende sloten en plassen. Daar zit het probleem. Door die overstort komen stoffen uit het riool als medicijnresten en poep en plas in het oppervlaktewater terecht. Dan geef je door: 3 dagpauwogen. Zie je later op de dag of één van de andere teldagen weer vlinders? Dan kun je die doorgeven via een nieuwe telling. Heb je een vlinder gezien die niet in de tellijst staat? Dat kan; we tellen alleen de meest voorkomende soorten tuinvlinders. Je hoeft deze waarneming dan niet in te vullen. Belangrijk: als je geen vlinders ziet is het ook belangrijk om dit door te geven. In Chinese mathematics\, this was improved to approximations correct to what corresponds to about seven decimal digits by the 5th century. Further progress was not made until the 14th century\, when Madhava of Sangamagrama developed approximations correct to eleven and then thirteen digits. Jamshīd al-Kāshī achieved sixteen digits next. DESCRIPTION:A team led by scientists from Baylor College of Medicine\, University of Copenhagen\, and Centre Nacional d’Anàlisi Genòmica and Centre for Genomic Regulation report discovering fossils of ancient chromosomes in the remains of a woolly mammoth that died 52\,000 years ago. \nThe fossils preserve the structure of the ancient chromosomes down to the nanometer scale – billionths of a meter. Fossil chromosomes are a powerful new tool for studying the history of life on Earth. That’s because typical ancient DNA fragments are rarely longer than 100 base pairs\, or 100 letters of the genetic code – far smaller than the full DNA sequence of an organism\, which is often billions of letters long. By contrast\, fossil chromosomes can span hundreds of millions of genetic letters. Since the fossil chromosomes came from a mammoth\, one of the first things the team did was to determine the number of chromosomes that the woolly mammoth possessed. By examining the fossil chromosomes\, which derived from the mammoth’s skin\, it was possible to see which genes were active. This is because of a phenomenon called chromosome compartmentalization – the fact that active and inactive DNA tends to segregate into two spatial neighborhoods inside the cell nucleus. For most genes\, the activity state matches what researchers saw in modern elephant skin. But not always. The researchers saw more than just compartmentalization in the shape of these ancient chromosomes. In fact\, the chromosomes shared many structural features with modern chromosomes. De Nachtvlindernacht heeft het doel om zo veel mogelijk mensen in contact te brengen met nachtvlinders. Of je nu een ervaren ‘nachtvlinderaar’ of een beginner bent\, jong of oud: iedereen kan meedoen. Nachtvlinders of motten (Heterocera) zijn een grote groep vlinders die overeenkomsten in gedrag vertonen maar geen samenhangende taxonomische groep vormen. De groep omvat alle vlinders\, met uitzondering van de Papilionoidea\, waarvoor ook wel de naam Rhopalocera of dagvlinders wordt gebruikt. De namen Heterocera en Rhopalocera verwijzen naar de vorm van de antennen: de Rhopalocera hebben antennen met een knop aan het eind\, de Heterocera hebben divers gevormde antennen. Er zijn vele pogingen gedaan om de vlinders in groepen te verdelen\, zoals Microlepidoptera en Macrolepidoptera\, Monotrysia en Ditrysia of Frenatae en Jugatae. SUMMARY:Sudan Road Access: Logistics Cluster : Help humanitarians deliver aid in Sudan - Citizen science
DESCRIPTION:The Zooniverse’s Planetary Response Network needs your help to map floods in the Sudan — check out this project: Sudan Road Access: Logistics Cluster. \nThe Zooniverse’s Planetary Response Network is partnering with Logistics Cluster\, which is part of the cluster system established by the UN’s Inter Agency Standing Commitee. Logistics Cluster is helping to coordinate humanitarian aid work in Sudan\, and one of the biggest barriers they face is flooding during about half the year. Sudan is criss-crossed by dry riverbeds that are not yet well mapped\, and during the rainy season they intermittently and unpredictably flood the network of roads used by humanitarian organizations to deliver key supplies and aid across remote regions. Our first task is to complete the map of road-riverbed crossings over the large area of interest for humanitarian aid in Sudan. Once we have a full map of all the potential flood sites\, we will know where to focus our monitoring efforts during the rainy season\, which is just starting. SUMMARY:Nationaal Park Alle Tuinen
DESCRIPTION:Iedere Tuin telt in het nieuwe\, allergrootste natuurpark van Nederland: het ‘Nationaal Park Alle Tuinen’. \nIn Nederland zijn 4\,5 miljoen tuinen waarvan de gezamenlijke oppervlakte meer dan tien keer zo groot is als Het Nationale Park De Hoge Veluwe. Samen vormen onze tuinen het grootste natuurgebied van Nederland: Nationaal Park Alle Tuinen! En dat maakt iedere tuinbezitter tot natuurbeheerder. Hoe staat het met de soortenrijkdom in onze eigen achtertuinen? Samen met het publiek wordt op onderzoek uit gegaan in dit gloednieuwe Nationaal Park: Lukt het om 5.000 verschillende soorten wilde planten en dieren te tellen in de maand juli? In samenwerking met het Kadaster en de gratis app ObsIdentify van Waarneming.nl wordt deze uitdaging aangegaan met een BioBlitz\, een officiële telling. Aanleiding voor het project is de documentaire My Garden of a Thousand Bees van Martin Dohrn\, een wildlife filmmaker uit Bristol. Dohrn besloot tijdens de lockdown in coronatijd zijn apparatuur te gebruiken om het leven van de bijen in zijn achtertuin vast te leggen. Nu had hij eindelijk de tijd om in te zoomen op het insectenleven in eigen tuin. Hij nadert de bijen zo dichtbij en grondig dat hij meer dan dan zestig soorten kan vastleggen en zelfs individuen kan onderscheiden. Hij documenteert hun leven op een niveau zoals nog niet eerder te zien was. Het resultaat\, de bijzondere documentaire ‘My garden of a Thousand Bees’ werd op het wetenschapsfilmfestival InScience 2023 onderscheiden met de NTR Audience Award. \nLinks:\nIedere Tuin telt \nTrailer: Iedere tuin telt!
