DESCRIPTION:A 10-fold enhancement of lithium atoms was detected at 96 km altitude by a resonance lidar at Kühlungsborn\, Germany\, approximately 20 hours after the uncontrolled re-entry of a Falcon 9 upper stage. \nThe upper-atmospheric extension of the ICOsahedral Nonhydrostatic (ICON – a unified modeling system for global numerical weather prediction and climate studies) general circulation model\, nudged to ECMWF\, was used to calculate winds. Backwards trajectories\, including wind variability as measured by radar\, traced air masses to the Falcon 9 re-entry path at 100 km altitude\, west of Ireland. The study ‘Measurement of a lithium plume from the uncontrolled re-entry of a Falcon 9 rocket‘ presents the first measurement of upper-atmospheric pollution resulting from space debris re-entry and the first observational evidence that the ablation of space debris can be detected by ground-based lidar. The analysis of geomagnetic conditions\, atmospheric dynamics\, and ionospheric measurements supports the claim that the enhancement was not of natural origin. DESCRIPTION:The Gulf stream is moving north – and it could be an early warning sign; while this isn’t “The Day After Tomorrow\,” it’s still cause for concern. \nThe Gulf Stream\, that vital ribbon of warmth surging across the North Atlantic\, appears to be drifting northward. If this trend continues\, it could provide further evidence that the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) is losing strength and nearing collapse as global temperatures rise. The Gulf Stream is just one piece of the AMOC\, although the two terms are often used interchangeably in casual conversation. The latter is the mother of ocean current systems in the Atlantic\, sometimes known as the “conveyor belt of the ocean\,” that transports warm\, salty water from the tropics northward towards Europe. Meanwhile\, the Gulf Stream is a western boundary current system that’s part of the upper and northward-flowing branch of this oceanic engine. Scientists are becoming increasingly concerned that warming ocean temperatures and melting ice from Greenland could be pushing the AMOC toward a catastrophic standstill. Evidence already indicates a 15 percent reduction in the circulation’s strength since the 1950s\, fueling fears of a total collapse. While this collapse wouldn’t instantly trigger the frozen apocalypse depicted in The Day After Tomorrow\, it would starve Europe of heat\, leading to plummeting temperatures and shifted weather patterns across the hemisphere. However\, researchers have not been certain how the Gulf Stream\, one arm of this beast\, might play a role in the AMOC collapse. \nTo find out\, climatologists at Utrecht University in the Netherlands used computer modeling and real-world data to study how two ocean current systems interact. The findings indicate that the movement of the Gulf Stream could be a “canary in the coal mine” for the AMOC’s collapse. According to their analysis of satellite data\, the Gulf Stream has already been nudged northwards from the coast near Cape Hatteras\, North Carolina\, since the early 1990s. This is likely to be the result of the AMOC dwindling and losing its grip. Looking ahead\, the models forecast that further weakening of the AMOC will shift the Gulf Stream even further. At one key longitude (71.5°W)\, the current slowly drifts north by about 133 kilometers over several centuries\, followed by a sudden jump northward of about 219 kilometers within just two years in the model. This abrupt change is much larger than the normal year-to-year variation in the current’s position. In a punchline: the study ‘Abrupt Gulf Stream path changes are a precursor to a collapse of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation‘ concludes that a noticeable shift in the Gulf Stream’s position could signal that the AMOC is approaching a tipping point. DESCRIPTION:Engineering has always had an essential role in development and human welfare\, ensuring that future generations of engineers and scientists will be able to design solutions for local and global challenges is critical. \nUNESCO’s General Conference proclaimed the 4 March World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development during its 40th session in November 2019 (40 C/64)\, to raise awareness of the role of engineering in modern life\, which is essential to mitigate the impact of climate change and advance sustainable development\, especially in Africa and the small island developing states (SIDS). In spite of the importance of engineering for our life and future\, women have been historically underrepresented in engineering fields\, typically making up only 10 – 20% of the engineering work force.  Even in countries where the numbers of women studying STI have increased\, this trend has not translated into more women entering the workplace. Too many female students who graduate do not go into the engineering profession. The barriers are often connected to persistent gender stereotypes in this field\, inadequate policies or educational environments that do not meet their needs and aspirations. UNESCO is placing a high priority on activities that promote awareness of engineering as a career\, as well as on those that demonstrate the importance of youth studying science\, technology\, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The theme of World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development 2026 is “Smart engineering for sustainable future through innovation and digitalization”. \nThe World Federation of Engineering Organizations (WFEO) Hackathon is a key celebration of World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development\, bringing together engineering students and young engineers from around the world to solve real-world challenges. It is the largest international competition for engineering students globally. Participants collaborate across disciplines to design solutions that advance the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) — harnessing engineering\, innovation\, and emergent digital technologies to drive social progress and environmental sustainability. \nLinks:\nWorld Engineering Day for Sustainable Development \nWorld Engineering Day
