DESCRIPTION:Carl Edward Sagan (/ˈseɪɡən/; November 9\, 1934 – December 20\, 1996) was an American astronomer\, cosmologist\, astrophysicist\, astrobiologist\, author\, science popularizer\, and science communicator in astronomy and other natural sciences. \nHe is best known for his work as a science popularizer and communicator. His best known scientific contribution is research on extraterrestrial life\, including experimental demonstration of the production of amino acids from basic chemicals by radiation. Sagan assembled the first physical messages sent into space: the Pioneer plaque and the Voyager Golden Record\, universal messages that could potentially be understood by any extraterrestrial intelligence that might find them. Sagan argued the now accepted hypothesis that the high surface temperatures of Venus can be attributed to and calculated using the greenhouse effect. Sagan published more than 600 scientific papers and articles and was author\, co-author or editor of more than 20 books. He wrote many popular science books\, such as The Dragons of Eden\, Broca’s Brain and Pale Blue Dot\, and narrated and co-wrote the award-winning 1980 television series Cosmos: A Personal Voyage (+ deel 1). The most widely watched series in the history of American public television\, Cosmos has been seen by at least 500 million people across 60 different countries. The book Cosmos was published to accompany the series. He also wrote the science fiction novel Contact\, the basis for a 1997 film of the same name. His papers\, containing 595\,000 items\, are archived at The Library of Congress. Sagan advocated scientific skeptical inquiry and the scientific method\, pioneered exobiology and promoted the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI). He spent most of his career as a professor of astronomy at Cornell University\, where he directed the Laboratory for Planetary Studies. Sagan and his works received numerous awards and honors\, including the NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal\, the National Academy of Sciences Public Welfare Medal\, the Pulitzer Prize for General Non-Fiction for his book The Dragons of Eden\, and\, regarding Cosmos: A Personal Voyage\, two Emmy Awards\, the Peabody Award\, and the Hugo Award. He married three times and had five children. DESCRIPTION:The annual observance of the Week of Science and Peace is making an important contribution to the promotion of peace\, the Week encourages greater academic exchanges on a subject of universal importance while also generating greater awareness of the relationship of science and peace among the general public. \nBased on observances of Science and Peace Week to date\, it may be expected that participation each year will increase\, contributing to greater international understanding and opportunities for co-operation in the applications of science for the promotion of peace throughout the year. The Week of Science and Peace was first observed during 1986 as part of the observance of the International Year of Peace. The organization of events and activities for the week was undertaken as a non-governmental initiative; the secretariat for the International Year of Peace was informed of the preparatory activities and the final summary of events that occurred during the week. The organizers sought to encourage the broadest possible international participation in the observance. Based on the success of the 1986 observance\, the organizers continued their efforts in successive years. In recognition of the value of the annual observance\, the General Assembly adopted resolution 43/61 in December 1988\, which proclaims the “International Week of Science and Peace”\, to take place each year during the week in which 11 November falls. It also underscores the role scientists play in broadening our understanding of the remarkable\, fragile planet we call home and in making our societies more sustainable. The Day offers the opportunity to mobilize all actors around the topic of science for peace and development – from government officials to the media to school pupils. UNESCO strongly encourages all to join in celebrating World Science Day for Peace and Development by organizing your own event or activity on the day. The organization of a focused event related to the commitment to science and society was one of the positive outcomes of the 1999 World Conference on Science in Budapest. It was considered an opportunity to reaffirm each year the commitment to attaining the goals proclaimed in the Declaration on Science and the Use of Scientific Knowledge and to follow up the recommendations of the Science Agenda: Framework for Action. Since its proclamation by UNESCO in 2001\, World Science Day for Peace and Development has generated many concrete projects\, programmes\, and funding for science around the world. The Day has also helped foster cooperation between scientists living in regions marred by conflict—one example being the UNESCO-supported creation of the Israeli-Palestinian Science Organization (IPSO). The rationale of celebrating a World Science Day for Peace and Development has its roots in the importance of the role of science and scientists for sustainable societies and in the need to inform and involve citizens in science. In this sense\, a World Science Day for Peace and Development offers an opportunity to show the general public the relevance of science in their lives and to engage them in discussions. DESCRIPTION:Door Contains modified Copernicus Sentinel data 2025\nDe Hayli Gubbi (Amhaars: ሃይሊ-ጉቢ) is een schildvulkaan in de regio Afar in Ethiopië\, ligt in de Danakildepressie en maakt deel uit van de Erta Ale-bergketen. \nDe 493 meter hoge berg ligt in een gebied dat weinig bestudeerd is door vulkanologen. Hij werd tot 23 november 2025 beschouwd als een slapende vulkaan\, want de laatste uitbarsting die bij het Global Volcanism Program bekend was\, dateerde van voor het Holoceen\, dat zo’n twaalfduizend jaar geleden begon; er kunnen daarna wel onopgemerkte uitbarstingen geweest zijn. In de omgeving liggen actieve vulkanen\, waaronder de Erta Ale\, die een lavameer vormt. Hoewel er geen uitbarstingen van de Hayli Gubbi bekend waren\, toonden satellietbeelden gestolde lavastromen die wezen op activiteit in de afgelopen honderden jaren. In juli 2025 barstte de Erta Ale uit en onderzoek gaf aan dat magma van die vulkaan op dertig kilometer diepte een intrusie had gevormd bij de Hayli Gubbi. Daar kwam de aarde iets omhoog en werden witte rookpluimen gezien\, zodat rekening werd gehouden met meer activiteit. De twee vulkanen liggen op dezelfde mantelpluim. Het gebied ligt in de Grote Slenk\, ook bekend als de Riftvallei\, waar de Afrikaanse Plaat zich aan het splitsen is en wegdrijft van de Arabische Plaat\, wat aanleiding geeft tot vulkanisme. Gedurende de uitbarsting van 2025 werd het nabijgelegen dorp Afdera door de uitbarsting bedekt met een deken van vulkanische as. Voor zover bekend zijn er geen dodelijke slachtoffers gevallen\, maar het vee\, dat van groot belang is voor de bevolking\, kan geen voedsel vinden door de aslaag. Er ontstond in enkele uren een aspluim van veertien kilometer hoog\, tot boven de hoogte van de burgerluchtvaart. Zo’n hoge kolom met een paddenstoelwolk is ongebruikelijk voor de regio en voor schildvulkanen. De uitbarsting was erg lawaaiig\, maar leidde niet tot seismische activiteit. De eerste waarschuwing voor de luchtvaart werd uitgegeven op 23 november om 14:55 UTC. Op de subtropische straalstroom trok de wolk snel naar het oosten\, waarbij de concentratie zwaveldioxide in de atmosfeer sterk verhoogd was. Op 23 en 24 november werd de wolk waargenomen boven de Rode Zee\, Jemen\, Oman en de Arabische Zee. De 24e bereikte de as Pakistan en India\, vierduizend kilometer oostelijker. Boven India bevond de as zich op de hoogte van het vliegverkeer; vliegtuigen die de wolk niet konden ontwijken\, moesten na de landing geïnspecteerd worden en vliegvelden werden gereinigd. DESCRIPTION:Op 25 november 1975 werd Suriname onafhankelijk\, de gouverneur van Suriname Ferrier\, de Nederlandse minister-president Den Uyl en koningin Juliana ondertekenden het verdrag (Toescheidingsovereenkomst) en sindsdien is de officiële benaming Republiek Suriname. \nDat wordt ieder jaar gevierd op 25 november op Srefidensi Dey\, een evenement dat de Surinaamse onafhankelijkheid sinds 25 november 1975 markeert. Het is een nationale feestdag in Suriname. Er wordt bij stilgestaan door Surinamers in binnen- en buitenland\, onder meer door middel van meerdere festivals. In 2010 werd de dag ervoor het Srefidensimonument onthuld\, van de hand van kunstenaar George Struikelblok. Het staat aan de oever van de Surinamerivier bij Fort Zeelandia. Ferrier werd de eerste president van de nieuwe Zuid-Amerikaanse staat. Vijf jaar later vond een staatsgreep plaats onder leiding van de onderofficier Desi Bouterse\, maar dit maakte geen einde aan de wisseling van de wacht in het ambt van het presidentschap. In de reeks van uitgediende presidenten vallen twee namen op: de zojuist genoemde Bouterse\, die tweemaal voor enige dagen\, en Venetiaan die driemaal voor in totaal vijftien jaar het hoogste burgerlijke gezag uitoefende\, beginnend in 1991. Venetiaan\, een voormalig minister van Onderwijs\, werd na democratische verkiezingen in 2010 afgelost door Bouterse.
