DESCRIPTION:Engineering has always had an essential role in development and human welfare\, ensuring that future generations of engineers and scientists will be able to design solutions for local and global challenges is critical. \nUNESCO’s General Conference proclaimed the 4 March World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development during its 40th session in November 2019 (40 C/64)\, to raise awareness of the role of engineering in modern life\, which is essential to mitigate the impact of climate change and advance sustainable development\, especially in Africa and the small island developing states (SIDS). In spite of the importance of engineering for our life and future\, women have been historically underrepresented in engineering fields\, typically making up only 10 – 20% of the engineering work force.  Even in countries where the numbers of women studying STI have increased\, this trend has not translated into more women entering the workplace. Too many female students who graduate do not go into the engineering profession. The barriers are often connected to persistent gender stereotypes in this field\, inadequate policies or educational environments that do not meet their needs and aspirations. UNESCO is placing a high priority on activities that promote awareness of engineering as a career\, as well as on those that demonstrate the importance of youth studying science\, technology\, engineering and mathematics (STEM). En zo ja\, hoe ziet dat eruit? In 2020 gebruikten jongvolwassenen (16-25 jaar) op een doordeweekse dag 6 tot 7 uur een scherm\, voor werk\, studie en/of in hun vrije tijd. Meer dan de helft van de jongvolwassenen (60%) is van mening te veel achter een scherm te zitten. Onderzoek voor de Week van de Mediawijsheid 2024 laat zien dat jongvolwassenen vooral een scherm gebruiken vlak voor het slapen (84%) en direct na het wakker worden (65%). DESCRIPTION:In 2024 was de uitstoot van broeikasgassen 1\,6 procent lager dan in 2023\, deze daling is kleiner dan in de twee voorgaande jaren toen de afname telkens ruim 7 procent bedroeg. \nDe elektriciteits- en mobiliteitssectoren hebben in 2024 minder uitgestoten\, terwijl de industrie meer uitstootte. Dit melden het CBS en RIVM/Emissieregistratie op basis van de voorlopige kwartaalcijfers over de broeikasgassenuitstoot conform de richtlijnen van het IPCC. In 2024 was de uitstoot van broeikasgassen 37 procent kleiner dan in 1990\, het referentiejaar voor de Klimaatwet. Gedurende deze periode is van alle klimaatsectoren de uitstoot verminderd. De industrie stootte bijvoorbeeld vooral minder methaan\, lachgas en fluorhoudende gassen uit. Ook de emissies van de elektriciteitssector zijn kleiner. Met name vanaf 2017 worden fossiele energiedragers steeds meer vervangen door biomassa\, zonne- en windenergie. De Klimaatwet stelt dat in 2030 de broeikasgasuitstoot 55 procent lager moet zijn dan in 1990. Dat komt neer op een daling van 125 Megaton CO2-equivalent. Tussen 1990 en 2023 daalden de emissies met gemiddeld 2\,5 Megaton per jaar\, in 2024 met 2 Megaton. DESCRIPTION:Lewotobi is a twin volcano located in the southeastern part of the island of Flores\, Indonesia\, it has two peaks; the Lewotobi Laki-laki (Male Lewotobi) and Lewotobi Perempuan (Female Lewotobi) stratovolcanoes\, the more active Lewotobi Laki-laki is about 2.1 km northwest of the taller Lewotobi Perempuan. \nOn 21 March\, Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted\, sending ash clouds over 8 km high. Authorities raised the alert to the highest level\, and Jetstar canceled some flights to Bali. The eruption followed smaller ones since 13 March. One person was injured during the evacuations\, although the details reported were unclear. Bali airport remained open\, but seven international flights were canceled. The geological agency warned of lava floods and continued activity. Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted again on 18 May\, prompting authorities to raise Indonesia’s highest volcanic alert level. Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted on 17 June\, sending ash clouds 11 km high\, prompting authorities to raise Indonesia’s highest volcanic alert level again\, with a plume visible from a distance of 90 km to 150 km. DESCRIPTION:Op π-dag\, 14 maart\, wordt wereldwijd op verschillende wiskundeafdelingen van universiteiten feest gevierd\, omdat in de Amerikaanse schrijfwijze voor data 14 maart geschreven wordt als 3/14 en de driecijferige benadering voor π 3\,14 is. \nHet getal π\, uitgesproken en soms geschreven als pi\, is een wiskundige constante met in decimale notatie de getalswaarde 3\,141 592 653… Deze waarde is de verhouding van omtrek en diameter van een cirkel. Deze dag wordt op verschillende manieren gevierd. Zo staan sommigen stil bij de rol die π in hun leven gespeeld heeft en proberen zich op humoristische wijze een wereld zonder π voor te stellen. De viering begint gewoonlijk om 13:59 uur (1:59 PM)\, omdat de zescijferige benadering van π 3\,14159 is. Mensen die de 24-uurs klokindeling gebruiken handhaven een ander begin: 1:59 of 15:09. Het “ultieme π-moment” was op 14 maart 1592 om 6:53 en 58 seconden\, omdat dit 3/14/1592 6:53:58 in de Amerikaanse schrijfwijze voor data is. DESCRIPTION:Several years ago\, a cosmic particle detector in Antarctica observed a series of unusual radio signals\, according to an international research group that includes scientists from Penn State. \nThe strange radio pulses were detected between 2016 and 2018 by NASA’s Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA)\, a range of instruments flown on balloons high above Antarctica that are designed to detect radio waves from cosmic rays hitting the atmosphere\, and a new study provides additional context to the nearly decade-old results. The goal of the ANITA experiment was to gain insight into distant cosmic events by analyzing signals that reach the Earth. Rather than reflecting off the ice\, the signals — a form of radio waves — appeared to be coming from below the horizon\, an orientation that could not be explained by the current understanding of particle physics and may have hinted at new types of particles or interactions previously unknown to science\, the team said at the time. A new study using the Pierre Auger Observatory in Argentina analyzed 15 years of cosmic data to try to make sense of those signals. DESCRIPTION:On 28 March 2025 at 12:50:54 MMT (06:20:54 UTC)\, the Mw 7.7 2025 Myanmar earthquake struck the Sagaing Region of Myanmar\, with an epicenter close to Mandalay\, the country’s second-largest city\, the strike-slip faulting shock achieved a maximum Modified Mercalli intensity of IX (Violent). \nIt was the most powerful earthquake to strike Myanmar since 1912. The earthquake caused extensive damage in Myanmar and significant damage in neighboring Thailand. SUMMARY:Onderzoek naar het voedingsgedrag van wolven (Canis lupus) in Nederland in 2023 - publicatie
DESCRIPTION:Wolven in Nederland eten vooral wilde hoefdieren zoals reeën\, wilde zwijnen en edelherten maar ook natuurgrazers in wildarme gebieden. \nOnder meer in Drenthe\, voeden wolven zich ook met in het wild levende runderen die worden ingezet voor natuurbeheer. Dat blijkt uit een onderzoek naar de ontlasting van de wolven in ons land. Het onderzoek naar het voedingspatroon van de wolven in Nederland\, uitgevoerd door het Centrum voor Milieuwetenschappen van de Universiteit Leiden\, Stichting Leo\, Universiteit Antwerpen en de Zoogdiervereniging\, bracht het voedingspatroon van wolven in 2023 gedetailleerd in kaart. Uit de resultaten blijkt dat op de Veluwe\, wilde zwijnen (aanwezig in 62% van de onderzochte uitwerpselen)\, reeën (56%) en edelherten (32%) de voornaamste prooidieren zijn. In Drenthe\, waar vrijwel alleen reeën in het wild voorkomen\, voeden wolven zich naast reeën (aangetoond in 63% van de uitwerpselen) ook met natuurrunderen (43%) die ingezet worden voor natuurbeheer\, en schapen (10%). Het onderzoek is een langdurige studie die in ieder geval loopt tot en met 2025. De wetenschappelijke bevindingen kunnen bijdragen aan het maatschappelijk debat\, maar ook aan de onderbouwing van een beter beleid voor wolven in Nederland. Er is nu voor het eerst objectieve informatie over het wolvendieet in Nederland. For most of the history of neuroscience\, tracing the detailed connectivity (or connectomics) and measuring activity of neurons at such a large scale was unthinkable. Instead\, neuroscientists worked at more manageable scales — even single pairs of connected cells can provide important information\, especially when accrued over hundreds of labs doing similar experiments. Nevertheless\, the goal of studying millimetre-scale volumes of brain in such detail started to come closer after a period of intense focus on new neuroscience technologies in the 1990s and 2000s. This period led to tools to label\, trace and image the activity of neurons in increasingly large populations. However\, the fundamental problem of scale remained. A complete reconstruction of a cubic millimetre of neurons requires roughly a petabyte of data. Tracing the intricate branches of the neurons is far too time consuming to do by hand\, so improved tools for automation were needed. A parallel revolution in computing — increased computing power and advances in machine learning and artificial intelligence — suddenly made those challenges tractable. This brings us to today’s announcement of the MICrONS project. The team made and designed tools to allow dense neural reconstruction at scale. The resulting data set includes 200\,000 cells and 523 million connections in the primary visual cortex and surrounding areas of a mouse. A unique contribution of the MICrONS project is that it also includes in vivo functional data from around 75\,000 of the neurons. Even landmark connectomics studies\, such as FlyWire\, include only the anatomical data. DESCRIPTION:Petition proposing an ‘International Day of Volcanoes’ to be observed officially by the United Nations and we are asking that the U.N. General Assembly please consider a resolution for establishing an ‘International Day of Volcanoes’ on 10th April every year. \nTanguy De Saint-Cyr\, owner of French volcano tour company\, that came up with the concept for an ‘International Day of Volcanoes’ and Jeannie Curtis\, a New Zealand technical writer and educator are proposing an ‘International Day of Volcanoes’ to be officially recognised and observed by the United Nations and ask that the General Assembly please consider a resolution for establishing an ‘International Day of Volcanoes’ on 10th April. The date of 10th April has no recognised international day and we propose this date for the following reason: On 10 April 1815 Gunung (Mount) Tambora in Indonesia erupted and generated massive pyroclastic flows and tsunami that instantly killed 10\,000 locals\, who were unaware of the danger. The massive eruption injected huge amounts of aerosols into the Earth’s stratosphere\, causing a global haze which reflected back the incoming sunlight and cooled our planet by half a degree (celsius). This affected the planet’s climate for three years\, causing crop failure and famine\, resulting in up to 60\,000 more human deaths globally – as well as affecting animals\, fauna and agriculture.
