SUMMARY:The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2024
DESCRIPTION:The Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institutet has decided to award the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine jointly to Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun “for the discovery of microRNA and its role in post-transcriptional gene regulation.” \nIn 1993\, they published unexpected findings describing a new level of gene regulation\, which turned out to be highly significant and conserved throughout evolution. Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun discovered microRNA\, a new class of tiny RNA molecules that play a crucial role in gene regulation. Their groundbreaking discovery in the small worm C. elegans revealed a completely new principle of gene regulation. This turned out to be essential for multicellular organisms\, including humans. MicroRNAs are proving to be fundamentally important for how organisms develop and function. \nLinks:\nThe Nobel Prize \nPress release: The Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2024 \nScientific background: For the discovery of microRNA and its role in post-transcriptional gene regulation

SUMMARY:Ada Lovelace Day 2024
DESCRIPTION:Ada Lovelace Day is an annual event held on the second Tuesday of October to celebrate and raise awareness of the contributions of women to Science\, Technology\, Engineering\, and Mathematics (STEM) fields\, it is named after mathematician and computer science pioneer Ada Lovelace. \nIt started in 2009 as a “day of blogging” and has since become a multi-national event with conferences. The day was founded in the United Kingdom in 2009 by Suw Charman-Anderson on the second Tuesday in October as a means of raising awareness about the contributions of women to science\, technology\, engineering\, and mathematics (STEM) fields. In 2022\, Charman-Anderson announced that this would be the last year in which the organization that she founded\, Finding Ada\, would organize an annual flagship Ada Lovelace Day event in England. However\, the Royal Institution stepped in with funding and the organization Ada Lovelace Day has carried on. Since its inception\, Ada Lovelace Day has become international in scope\, with events organized by groups ranging from museums\, professional societies\, universities\, colleges and high schools. While Ada Lovelace Day is the second Tuesday of October\, events celebrating women in STEM typically span the period of October and November\, and include diverse activities ranging from in-person and virtual Wikipedia Editathons to panel discussions and film screenings. While this celebration of the often overlooked contributions of women in STEM was named for Ada Lovelace\, activities have expanded since 2009 to highlight the diverse contributions of women in STEM over time and different countries. Events have featured policy initiatives and scholarship relating to equity\, diversity and inclusion that provide spaces and platforms for dialogue and discussion about how unconscious bias(es) function to create barriers to women’s participation and advancement in the professional fields of STEM. \nLinks:\nAda Lovelace Day 2024

SUMMARY:Using artificial intelligence to document the hidden RNA virosphere - publicatie
DESCRIPTION:Click image to read\nAI-based metagenomic mining greatly expands the diversity of the global RNA virosphere. \nCurrent metagenomic tools can fail to identify highly divergent RNA viruses. Scientists developed a deep learning algorithm\, termed LucaProt\, to discover highly divergent RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRP) sequences in 10\,487 metatranscriptomes generated from diverse global ecosystems. LucaProt integrates both sequence and predicted structural information\, enabling the accurate detection of RdRP sequences. Using this approach\, they identified 161\,979 potential RNA virus species and 180 RNA virus supergroups\, including many previously poorly studied groups\, as well as RNA virus genomes of exceptional length (up to 47\,250 nucleotides) and genomic complexity. A subset of these novel RNA viruses was confirmed by RT-PCR and RNA/DNA sequencing. Newly discovered RNA viruses were present in diverse environments\, including air\, hot springs\, and hydrothermal vents\, with virus diversity and abundance varying substantially among ecosystems. This study advances virus discovery\, highlights the scale of the virosphere\, and provides computational tools to better document the global RNA virome. \nLinks:\nMithilfe von KI – Zehntausende potenziell neue RNA-Viren entdeckt

SUMMARY:The Nobel Peace Prize 2024
DESCRIPTION:The grassroots movement Nihon Hidankyo of atomic bomb survivors from Hiroshima and Nagasaki\, also known as Hibakusha\, is receiving the Nobel Peace Prize for its efforts to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons and for demonstrating through witness testimony that nuclear weapons must never be used again. \nThe extraordinary efforts of Nihon Hidankyo and other representatives of the Hibakusha have contributed greatly to the establishment of a nuclear taboo. The fates of those who survived the infernos of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were long concealed and neglected. In 1956\, local Hibakusha associations along with victims of nuclear weapons tests in the Pacific formed the Japan Confederation of A- and H-Bomb Sufferers Organisations. This name was shortened in Japanese to Nihon Hidankyo. It would become the largest and most influential Hibakusha organisation in Japan. \nLinks:\nThe Nobel Prize \nA powerful international norm stigmatising nuclear weapons \nFive documentaries inspired by the Nobel Peace Prize \nNihon Hidankyo

SUMMARY:World Standards Day / Wereld Normalisatie (standaarden) dag 2024
DESCRIPTION:World Standards Day is celebrated internationally each year on 14 October\, the day honours the efforts of the thousands of experts who develop voluntary standards within standards development organizations such as the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)\, International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC)\, International Organization for Standardization (ISO)\, International Telecommunication Union (ITU)\, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF). \nThe aim of World Standards Day is to raise awareness among regulators\, industry and consumers as to the importance of standardization to the global economy. 14 October was specifically chosen to mark the date\, in 1946\, when delegates from 25 countries first gathered in London and decided to create an international organization focused on facilitating standardization. Even though ISO was formed one year later\, it wasn’t until 1970 that the first World Standards Day was celebrated. \nLinks:\nWorld Standards Day – WSC \nWorld Standards Day – ISO

SUMMARY:#MoleDay / Wereld Mol Dag 2024
DESCRIPTION:Mole Day is an unofficial holiday celebrated among chemists\, chemistry students and chemistry enthusiasts on October 23\, between 06:02 and 18:02 (6:02 pm)\, making the date 6:02 10/23 in the American style of writing dates. \nThe time and date are derived from the Avogadro number\, which is approximately 6.02×1023\, defining the number of particles (atoms or molecules) in one mole (mol) of substance\, one of the seven base SI units. Schools around the world celebrate Mole Day with various activities related to chemistry and/or moles. For a given molecule\, one mole is a mass (in grams) whose number is equal to the molar mass of the molecule. For example\, the water molecule has an molar mass of 18\, therefore one mole of water weighs 18 grams. Similarly\, a mole of neon has a molar mass of 20 grams. In general\, one mole of any substance contains Avogadro’s Number of molecules or atoms of that substance. This relationship was first discovered by Amedeo Avogadro (1776-1858) and he received credit for this after his death.  \nLinks:\nMole Day \nMol (eenheid)

SUMMARY:#WorldCodingDay 2024
DESCRIPTION:Coding is more than just a technical skill; it blends logic with creativity\, connecting various disciplines\, including science\, technology\, communication\, engineering\, mathematics\, arts\, and languages. Learning to code fosters logical thinking\, enhances problem-solving skills\, and sparks innovation. \nComputer code is the language that narrates and defines the digital world we live in. It is material to the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems that permeate all facets of our lives. It is therefore concerning that there is a severe lack of diversity\, inclusion\, and representation among those who master this language. Without diverse voices in coding and AI development\, the digitalization of our society risks reflecting and reinforcing biases and perpetuating inequalities. Recognizing the importance of coding to our digital world\, UNESCO Member States designated 29 October World Coding Day. It will be celebrated for the first time in 2024. \nLinks:\nWorld Coding Day

SUMMARY:Dark Matter Day 2024
DESCRIPTION:On and around October 31st\, 2024\, the world will celebrate the historic hunt for the unseen—something that scientists refer to as dark matter. \nSince 2017\, more than 350 global\, regional\, and local events have been held on and around October 31 by institutions and individuals looking to engage the public in discussions about what we already know about dark matter and the many experiments seeking to solve its mysteries. Scientists believe that dark matter\, which we have so far only detected through its gravity-based effects in space\, makes up about a quarter (26.8 percent) of the total mass and energy of the universe\, and something that is driving the universe’s accelerating expansion—which scientists call dark energy—accounts for another 68.3 percent. The ordinary matter\, like stars and planets and galaxies\, makes up just 4.9 percent of the total mass and energy of the universe. \nLinks:\nDark Matter Day 2024 \nDiscover the Mysteries of the Universe and the Brain

SUMMARY:A Seismic Precursor 15 min Before the Giant Eruption of Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai Volcano on 15 January 2022 - publication
DESCRIPTION:New trigger proposed for record-smashing 2022 Tonga eruption: previously unstudied data from a seismic wave\, detected 750 kilometers from the seamount\, may bolster tsunami early-warning systems. \nFifteen minutes before the massive January 2022 eruption of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcano\, a seismic wave was recorded by two distant seismic stations. Now\, researchers argue that similar early signals could be used to warn of other impending eruptions in remote oceanic volcanoes. The researchers propose that the seismic wave was caused by a fracture in a weak area of oceanic crust beneath the volcano’s caldera wall. That fracture allowed seawater and magma to pour into and mix together in the space above the volcano’s subsurface magma chamber\, explosively kickstarting the eruption. The research was published in Geophysical Research Letters\, an open-access AGU journal that publishes high-impact\, short-format reports with immediate implications spanning all Earth and space sciences. The results build on the researchers’ previous work monitoring remote volcanoes. In this case\, the Rayleigh wave\, a type of seismic wave that moves through the Earth’s surface\, was detected 750 kilometers (approximately 466 miles) from the volcano. \nLinks:\nNew trigger proposed for record-smashing 2022 Tonga eruption

SUMMARY:Imaging Ultraweak Photon Emission from Living and Dead Mice and from Plants under Stress - publication

SUMMARY:Carl Sagan – birthday (1934) / Carl Sagan Prize for Science Popularization 2024
DESCRIPTION:Carl Edward Sagan (/ˈseɪɡən/; November 9\, 1934 – December 20\, 1996) was an American astronomer\, cosmologist\, astrophysicist\, astrobiologist\, author\, science popularizer\, and science communicator in astronomy and other natural sciences. \nHe is best known for his work as a science popularizer and communicator. His best known scientific contribution is research on extraterrestrial life\, including experimental demonstration of the production of amino acids from basic chemicals by radiation. Sagan assembled the first physical messages sent into space: the Pioneer plaque and the Voyager Golden Record\, universal messages that could potentially be understood by any extraterrestrial intelligence that might find them. Sagan argued the now accepted hypothesis that the high surface temperatures of Venus can be attributed to and calculated using the greenhouse effect. \nSagan published more than 600 scientific papers and articles and was author\, co-author or editor of more than 20 books. He wrote many popular science books\, such as The Dragons of Eden\, Broca’s Brain and Pale Blue Dot\, and narrated and co-wrote the award-winning 1980 television series Cosmos: A Personal Voyage (+ deel 1). The most widely watched series in the history of American public television\, Cosmos has been seen by at least 500 million people across 60 different countries. The book Cosmos was published to accompany the series. He also wrote the science fiction novel Contact\, the basis for a 1997 film of the same name. His papers\, containing 595\,000 items\, are archived at The Library of Congress. \nSagan advocated scientific skeptical inquiry and the scientific method\, pioneered exobiology and promoted the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI). He spent most of his career as a professor of astronomy at Cornell University\, where he directed the Laboratory for Planetary Studies. Sagan and his works received numerous awards and honors\, including the NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal\, the National Academy of Sciences Public Welfare Medal\, the Pulitzer Prize for General Non-Fiction for his book The Dragons of Eden\, and\, regarding Cosmos: A Personal Voyage\, two Emmy Awards\, the Peabody Award\, and the Hugo Award. He married three times and had five children. After suffering from myelodysplasia\, Sagan died of pneumonia at the age of 62\, on December 20\, 1996. \nLinks:\nCarl Sagan Prize for Science Popularization

SUMMARY:World Science Day for Peace and Development / Wereldwetenschapdag voor Vrede en Ontwikkeling 2024
DESCRIPTION:World Science Day for Peace and Development highlights the important role that science has in society and is celebrated each year on November 10\, it also highlights the need to engage the wider public in debates on emerging scientific issues. \nWorld Science Day was proclaimed by the United Nations Educational\, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 2001 and celebrated for the first time in 2002. By linking science more closely with society\, World Science Day aims to ensure that citizens are kept informed of developments in science. It also underscores the role scientists play in broadening our understanding of the planet we call home and in making our societies more sustainable.\nThe objectives of World Science Day for Peace and Development are to: \n\nStrengthen public awareness on the role of science for peaceful and sustainable societies;\nPromote national and international solidarity for shared science between countries;\nRenew national and international commitment for the use of science for the benefit of societies;\nDraw attention to the challenges faced by science and raising support for the scientific endeavour.\n\nIndividuals and institutions around the world are encouraged to organize an event or activity on World Science Day\, including government officials\, students\, the media and school pupils. World Science Day for Peace and Development has generated many concrete projects\, programmes and funding for science around the world. It has also helped foster cooperation between scientists living in regions marred by conflict\, one example being the UNESCO-supported creation of the Israeli-Palestinian Science Organization (IPSO). 2024 Theme: Youth at the forefront. \nLinks:\nWorld Science Day for Peace and Development \nWeek of Science and Peace 2024

SUMMARY:Onderzoekers willen nikkel winnen met mosterdplanten - publicatie
