DESCRIPTION:Weekend van de Wetenschap is sinds 2012 een Nederlands wetenschapsevenement\, jaarlijks organiseert het NEMO wetenschap en technologiemuseum met steun van het ministerie van Onderwijs\, Cultuur en Wetenschap dit weekend. \nDoel van het evenement is om een breed publiek kennis te laten maken met wetenschap en techniek. Veel (onderzoeks)instellingen\, bedrijven\, universiteiten\, science centra en sterrenwachten organiseren dan publieksactiviteiten zoals rondleidingen\, workshops\, debatten en lezingen. Wetenschap is overal en altijd om ons heen\, soms zonder dat we het doorhebben. Het is de basis van onze technologie\, de geneeskunde en onze kennis over de wereld om ons heen. Maar hoeveel weten we eigenlijk over de wetenschap achter ons dagelijks leven? Tijdens Weekend van de Wetenschap kunnen kinderen op zoek naar antwoorden op deze en vele andere vragen\, en worden ze meegenomen op een fascinerende reis door de wetenschap. DESCRIPTION:De Dag van de Leraar\, ook Dag van de Leerkracht(en) genoemd\, is een jaarlijks terugkerende  speciale dag om waardering te tonen voor onderwijzers. \nDe dag wordt gevierd in zo’n 88 landen wereldwijd. De datum is sinds 1962 verschillende keren veranderd\, waardoor de dag in verschillende landen op verschillende datums gevierd wordt. In onder andere België\, Duitsland\, Nederland en het Verenigd Koninkrijk valt de dag op 5 oktober. Op deze dag wordt de waardering van leerkrachten benadrukt en is er aandacht voor het onderwijs als belangrijke factor in de maatschappij. Dit kan soms gepaard gaan met vieringen om hen te eren voor hun speciale bijdrage in een specifiek domein\, of voor de gemeenschap in het algemeen. Er vinden verschillende evenementen plaats om de dag te markeren\, van lezingen en spreekbeurten tot theater. Het is voor veel scholen ook het moment om het onderwijzend personeel een bedankje te geven en hun leraren en leraressen in het zonnetje te zetten. Van scheurkalender en boekenbon tot een dagje uit worden er geschenken gegeven aan leraren en leraressen. DESCRIPTION:Ada Lovelace Day is an annual event held on the second Tuesday of October to celebrate and raise awareness of the contributions of women to Science\, Technology\, Engineering\, and Mathematics (STEM) fields\, it is named after mathematician and computer science pioneer Ada Lovelace. \nIt started in 2009 as a “day of blogging” and has since become a multi-national event with conferences. The day was founded in the United Kingdom in 2009 by Suw Charman-Anderson on the second Tuesday in October as a means of raising awareness about the contributions of women to STEM fields. In 2022\, Charman-Anderson announced that this would be the last year in which the organization that she founded\, Finding Ada\, would organize an annual flagship Ada Lovelace Day event in England. However\, the Royal Institution stepped in with funding and the organization Ada Lovelace Day has carried on. Since its inception\, Ada Lovelace Day has become international in scope\, with events organized by groups ranging from museums\, professional societies\, universities\, colleges and high schools. While Ada Lovelace Day is the second Tuesday of October\, events celebrating women in STEM typically span the period of October and November\, and include diverse activities ranging from in-person and virtual Wikipedia Editathons to panel discussions and film screenings. While this celebration of the often overlooked contributions of women in STEM was named for Ada Lovelace\, activities have expanded since 2009 to highlight the diverse contributions of women in STEM over time and different countries. DESCRIPTION:Kennis\, onderzoek en innovatie; belangrijke onderwerpen voor de toekomst van Nederland\, toch zijn het vaak geen thema’s die veelvuldig voorbijkomen in verkiezingstijd en om die reden organiseert de Kenniscoalitie op 21 oktober 2025 het verkiezingsdebat voor onderzoek en wetenschap. \nTijdens het debat gaan onder andere Luc Stultiens (GroenLinks/PvdA)\, Claire Martens-America (VVD)\, Jan Paternotte (D66) en Marcel Hanegraaff (CDA) met elkaar in gesprek over de toekomst van kennis\, onderzoek en innovatie in Nederland. Daarbij komen thema’s aan bod die niet alleen het hoger onderwijs en de wetenschap raken\, maar ook de samenleving en economie als geheel. Zo wordt er gesproken over de manier waarop onderzoeksfinanciering is ingericht en welke keuzes daarbij gemaakt moeten worden. Ook staat de vraag centraal hoe Nederland zijn innovatiekracht kan versterken om duurzame economische groei te realiseren. Daarnaast wordt stilgestaan bij de internationale concurrentie en de vraag hoe we talent kunnen behouden en aantrekken\, in samenhang met het Europese Meerjarig Financieel Kader. Tot slot gaat het over de waarde van onderzoek zelf\, van fundamenteel en ongebonden onderzoek tot de bescherming van academische vrijheid. Marcel Levi\, voorzitter van de Kenniscoalitie\, zal de deelnemers welkom heten met een prikkelende introductie. DESCRIPTION:Mole Day is an unofficial holiday celebrated among chemists\, chemistry students and chemistry enthusiasts on October 23\, between 06:02 and 18:02 (6:02 pm)\, making the date 6:02 10/23 in the American style of writing dates. \nThe time and date are derived from the Avogadro number\, which is approximately 6.02×1023\, defining the number of particles (atoms or molecules) in one mole (mol) of substance\, one of the seven base SI units. Schools around the world celebrate Mole Day with various activities related to chemistry and/or moles. For a given molecule\, one mole is a mass (in grams) whose number is equal to the molar mass of the molecule. For example\, the water molecule has an molar mass of 18\, therefore one mole of water weighs 18 grams. Similarly\, a mole of neon has a molar mass of 20 grams. In general\, one mole of any substance contains Avogadro’s Number of molecules or atoms of that substance. Atomic clocks are already extraordinarily accurate\, yet researchers are now aiming higher with a nuclear clock that measures time using the motion of an atomic nucleus. The isotope thorium-229\, uniquely possessing a laser-accessible low-energy state\, lies at the centre of this effort. When embedded in transparent crystals and probed with vacuum-ultraviolet light\, this nuclear transition provides a reference less sensitive to environmental noise than electronic transitions. Current work focuses on engineering host materials\, controlling and quenching excitations\, and understanding how crystal defects shape nuclear behaviour; effectively building a nuclear clock. This breakthrough could enable innovations in navigation\, sensing\, and communications\, as well as unlock new insights in fields such as relativity\, dark matter\, and fundamental constants. Sinds de Russische inval in Oekraïne in 2022 en de wereldwijde toename van conflicten lijkt dit een logische keuze: we willen ons kunnen verdedigen en investeren in veiligheid. Maar is bewapening de enige weg naar veiligheid? Nog niet zo lang geleden volgde Europa een heel andere koers. Na het einde van de Koude Oorlog daalden de defensiebudgetten\, werden chemische wapens vernietigd en groeide het geloof in diplomatie\, internationale samenwerking en vreedzaam conflictbeheer. Inmiddels kiest Europa opnieuw voor bewapening: er komen nieuwe gevechtsvliegtuigen en drones\, de herinvoering van de dienstplicht staat ter discussie en jongeren melden zich aan als reservist. Is dit uitsluitend het gevolg van de dreiging vanuit Rusland? Hoe ziet de herbewapening van Europa eruit? En wat zijn argumenten voor pacifisme? \nIn dit Kenniscafé wordt de remilitarisering vanuit verschillende perspectieven onderzocht. Moderator Jelte Posthumus spreekt onder andere met hoogleraar Internationaal Recht Marcel Brus over de complexiteit van oorlogsrecht in hybride oorlogsvoering\, zoals cyberaanvallen\, desinformatie of proxy wars. Ook schuift universitair docent Militaire Geschiedenis Kim Bootsma aan\, die de geschiedenis van dienstplicht in Europa toelicht en onder meer bespreekt wat deze remilitarisering betekent voor de bevordering van gendergelijkheid in het leger. Bovendien licht Willem de Haan\, socioloog\, journalist en betrokken bij de Nieuwe Vredesbeweging\, toe waarom hij oorlog de meest primitieve manier van conflictoplossing vindt. Onlangs verscheen van De Haan Vrede als daad\, een pleidooi voor vrede in tijden van oorlog. In het Kenniscafé wordt elke maand gepraat met Groningse wetenschappers\, onderzoekers en andere experts over actuele thema’s.
