DESCRIPTION:Historici in Amerika voelen angst: ‘Slavernij\, gender en klimaat zijn nu verboden woorden’\n\n\n\nWetenschappers in Amerika moeten hun onderzoeksvoorstellen voortaan laten beoordelen door politieke functionarissen\, die gaan bepalen of hun onderzoek strookt met ‘het nationaal belang’. Historisch Nieuwsblad sprak een jaar geleden met Nederlandse historici die aan Amerikaanse universiteiten werken. ‘Ik denk absoluut na over een terugkeer naar Nederland.’ \n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n\nStudenten demonstreren tegen Trumps aanval op Harvard. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTeun Willemse Redacteur\nGepubliceerd op: 13 mei 2025\nUpdate 9 juni 2026 \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nZe had in april 2025 een beurs aan moeten vragen voor haar onderzoek\, maar Andrea Mosterman heeft het dat jaar niet eens geprobeerd. De historica houdt zich aan de University of New Orleans bezig met slavernijgeschiedenis. ‘Om me heen zie ik collega’s plotseling hun beurs verliezen. Ze krijgen te horen dat hun onderzoek niet in line is met wat de overheid wil promoten.’ \n\n\n\nVolgens Mosterman gaat er een zwarte lijst rond met verboden begrippen. ‘Als die termen voorkomen in je onderzoeksvraag\, wordt je beurs automatisch afgewezen. Het was mij al duidelijk dat ik dit jaar geen geld zou krijgen\, omdat ik onderzoek doe naar racisme. Maar het gaat ook om begrippen als “vrouwen”\, “gender” en “klimaatactivisme”. In het zuiden van Amerika speelt de druk op het onderwijs al langer. Maar nu gebeurt het op federaal niveau. Voor historici in Louisiana wordt het steeds moeilijker om hun werk te doen en vrijuit te spreken.’ \n\n\nVoorzichtigheid in de collegezaal\n\n\nHet Witte Huis heeft het sinds januari 2025 gemunt op ‘te linkse’ universiteiten. Steen des aanstoots voor Trump is het zogenoemde DEI-beleid in het hoger onderwijs: diversity\, equity and inclusion. Het ministerie van Onderwijs eist van scholen dat ze stoppen met hun diversiteitsbeleid en dat ze buitenlandse studenten rapporteren die iets strafbaars hebben gedaan. Bovendien moeten campussen extern toezicht toestaan om ‘antisemitisme’ te voorkomen. \n\n\nHet leidt tot een angstige sfeer op de campus\, zegt Marjoleine Kars\, professor aan de geschiedenisfaculteit van het Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). ‘Het is heel zorgelijk. Mensen vrezen dat universiteiten de vrijheid van meningsuiting aan banden zullen leggen. Ze zijn nu al bang om te demonstreren tegen Trump of Israël.’ \n\n\nOok Christine Kooi ziet de stemming omslaan. De hoogleraar van Nederlandse komaf geeft les aan Louisiana State University (LSU) en spreekt van ‘vreemde tijden’. ‘We zijn voorzichtig met wat we zeggen in het klaslokaal.’ Een professor aan de rechtenfaculteit van LSU werd al gestraft nadat er een filmpje opdook waarin hij uitspraken deed over Trump-stemmers. De Republikeinse gouverneur van Louisiana maakte daar een zaak van die landelijk aandacht kreeg en tot een schorsing leidde. ‘Onze lessen en onderzoeken gaan door zoals normaal\, maar iedereen is hier wel zorgvuldig en on their toes.’ \n\n\nGroeiende geldproblemen\n\n\nVoor veel geschiedenisfaculteiten is het verlies van financiering het meest acute en voelbare gevolg van Trumps onderwijsbeleid. Aan LSU worden de budgetten voor historisch onderzoek met twee procent verlaagd en is er een opnamestop afgekondigd. ‘We hebben wel collega’s nodig’\, zegt Kooi. ‘Maar we mogen niemand aannemen.’ \n\n\nDe grootste financier van historisch onderzoek in Amerika is de National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). Het federaal agentschap accepteert wel nieuwe beurzen\, maar volgens Kars is het vaak maar de vraag of die worden uitgekeerd. ‘Vooral beginnende historici raken daardoor in de problemen. Ik sta aan het einde van mijn carrière\, maar als je nu begint\, heb je echt NEH-funding nodig om een jaar lang onderzoek te kunnen doen.’ Het zal studenten afschrikken die een academische carrière overwegen\, vreest Kars. ‘Maar ook op andere plekken wordt het voor jonge historici lastiger\, want musea krijgen ook geen geld. Het aantal banen krimpt.’ \n\n\n\nTrump kondigt de bouw van een National Garden of American Heroes aan\, 3 juli 2020.\n\n\n\nHet Witte Huis haalt geld weg bij universiteiten\, musea en regionale geschiedenisinstituten\, en investeert alleen in onderzoek dat in Trumps plaatje van de geschiedenis past. ‘Daardoor dreigt de pluraliteit aan visies op de Amerikaanse geschiedenis te verdwijnen\,’ zegt Kars. Ze wijst op de bouwplannen voor een beeldenpark met nationale helden en op de jubileumviering van de Amerikaanse Revolutie in 2026. ‘Ik ben bang dat de overheid daarbij mythes en feel good stories zal verkondigen\, zonder ruimte te laten voor kritische geluiden.’ \n\n\n‘Zelfmoord voor het hoger onderwijs’\n\n\nNaast budgettaire problemen maken de historici zich zorgen om hun internationale studenten. Sommigen verliezen hun verblijfstatus en moeten vrezen voor een vroegtijdig einde van hun studie. ‘Als dit zo doorgaat\, komen buitenlandse studenten en academici niet meer naar de VS\,’ vreest Mosterman. Terwijl juist de mensen van buiten ontzettend veel bijdragen aan ons universiteitssysteem.’ \n\n\n‘Zelfmoord voor het hoger onderwijs\,’ beaamt Kooi. ‘Het is waanzinnig en vormt niet alleen een probleem voor buitenlandse studenten. Een van mijn collega’s houdt zich bezig met de geschiedenis van India\, waar ze vandaan komt. Ze heeft een permanente Amerikaanse verblijfsvergunning\, maar is geen staatsburger. Ze durft het land niet meer uit om onderzoek te doen\, uit angst dat ze niet meer terugkomt.’ \n\n\nKars kent jonge Duitse academici die ondanks hun verblijfsvergunning bang zijn om deze zomer hun familie op te zoeken. ‘Talent aantrekken wordt een probleem\, omdat je je hier als buitenlander niet meer veilig voelt. Op MIT hebben we dit jaar weer internationale graduate students toegelaten\, maar dat proces was ingewikkelder dan normaal. Buitenlandse studenten moesten twee keer nadenken of ze naar MIT wilden komen.’ \n\n\nVrezen voor een exodus\n\n\nDe Verenigde Staten waren lang het beloofde land voor historisch onderzoek\, maar die status verdampt in razend tempo. De prominente historicus Timothy Snyder verruilde zijn functie bij Yale voor een plek aan de universiteit van Toronto. ‘Amerika is nog steeds dé plek om onderzoek te doen\,’ zegt Kooi. ‘Maar of dat zo blijft\, is onzeker. Ik verwacht nog meer pushback vanuit het Witte Huis. Sommige dagen maakt me dat nerveus\, maar de meeste dagen ben ik simpelweg woedend.’ \n\n\nMosterman sluit een vertrek uit Amerika niet uit. ‘Daar denk ik echt over na. Hoe moeilijk dat ook is vanwege mijn familie en mijn leven hier.’ Haar collega’s vragen elkaar gekscherend of ze in een ander land staatsburgerkunnen worden. ‘Dat zijn grapjes met een kern van waarheid. Onderzoekers die een voorouder uit Italië hebben\, proberen daar nu citizenship te krijgen\, zodat ze de mogelijkheid hebben om weg te gaan.’ \n\n\nVoor veel mensen is een vertrek naar het buitenland überhaupt geen optie\, zegt Marjoleine Kars. ‘Veel mensen hebben het gevoel dat ze moeten vechten voor de academische vrijheid in Amerika.’ \n\n\nHopen op de rechter\n\n\nDe historici vestigen hun hoop op het verzet tegen Trump. Want hoewel sommige universiteiten schoorvoetend gehoor geven aan de eisen uit Washington\, legt niet iedere school zich erbij neer. ‘Universiteiten beginnen gezamenlijk terug te vechten’\, zegt Kars. ‘Scholen wilden eerst een low profile houden in de hoop dat Trump een ander zou pakken\, maar beginnen nu te begrijpen dat ze apart kunnen hangen\, of met zijn allen.’ \n\n\nIn die juridische strijd loopt Harvard voorop. De overheid dreigt de tax exempt status van de prestigieuze privéschool te schrappen als het Trumps eisen niet inwilligt\, een maatregel die de school miljoenen dollars kan kosten. Hoewel Harvard een van de weinige universiteiten is die genoeg reserves heeft om terug te vechten\, lijkt ook de school in Massachusetts niet immuun voor de druk uit het Witte Huis: de DEI-afdeling veranderde haar naam in 2025 naar de ‘afdeling voor community en campusleven’. \n\n\nZelfs als de rechtbank de universiteiten in bescherming neemt\, is het volgens Mosterman nog niet gedaan. ‘Nog belangrijker is of het Witte Huis daarnaar zal luisteren. Zijn de checks and balances genoeg om de uitvoerende macht aan banden te leggen? Als Harvard deze strijd niet wint\, is Amerika niet meer de plek waar je het nieuwste onderzoek zult zien. Waarom zou je daarvoor nog naar de Verenigde Staten willen?’ \n\n\nHet zijn onheilspellende berichten\, maar Marjoleine Kars wil haar verhaal afsluiten met een hoopvolle boodschap. Juist onder deze omstandigheden vindt ze het belangrijk dat historici hun werk blijven doen. ‘We zijn nu extra nodig om nuance te brengen. Autoritaire regimes proberen de geschiedenis altijd naar hun hand te zetten\, dus het is belangrijker dan ooit dat we laten zien hoe de geschiedenis echt was. DESCRIPTION:Klik op afbeelding om te lezen\nThe Doomsday clock\, which symbolically measures how close the world is to nuclear war\, is currently at 89 seconds until midnight – the closest it’s ever been. \nOver the past few years\, we’ve also heard two presidents discuss the “nuclear option.” This is all to say that the world is surprisingly close to nuclear war. We’ve just become numb to that reality. But what happens after the nuclear bombs go off? A team led by researchers at Penn State have modelled precisely how various nuclear winter scenarios could affect global production of corn\, the most widely planted grain crop in the world. They also recommended preparing ‘agricultural resilience kits’ with seeds for faster-growing varieties better adapted to colder temperatures that could potentially help offset the effects of nuclear winter\, as well as natural disasters such as volcanic eruptions. In findings recently published in Environmental Research Letters\, the team reported that the level of corn crop decline would vary\, depending on the scale of the conflict. A regional nuclear war\, which would send about 5.5 tonnes of soot into the atmosphere\, could reduce worldwide annual corn production by seven per cent. A large-scale global war\, injecting 165 tonnes of soot into the atmosphere\, could lead to an 80 per cent drop in annual corn yields. In all\, the study simulated six nuclear war scenarios with varying soot injections. \nBecause of the crop’s global significance\, the researchers chose to model corn’s collapse in a nuclear winter to represent the expected fate of agriculture overall\, according to study first author Yuning Shi\, associate research professor in Penn State’s Department of Plant Science. He noted that an 80 per cent drop in global crop production would have catastrophic consequences\, leading to a widespread global food crisis. Even a seven per cent drop in global crop production would have a severe effect on the global food system and economy\, likely resulting in increased food insecurity and hunger. The simulations were possible thanks to the Cycles agroecosystem model\, created a few years ago by scientists in Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences\, including lead developer Armen Kemanian\, professor of production systems and modelling and corresponding author on this study. Using high-performance computing and considering atmospheric conditions\, Cycles enables large-scale\, high-resolution\, multi-year simulations of crop growth by meticulously tracking the carbon and nitrogen cycles within the soil-plant-atmosphere system. \nLinks:\nFood production plunges in nuclear winter: New study finds

DESCRIPTION:De KNAW organiseert samen met De Balie een debatavond over de bedreiging van de academische vrijheid en hoe die in de VS onder steeds meer druk komt te staan. \n‘Vrouw’\, ‘trauma’\, ‘slachtoffer’: het zijn enkele van de woorden die onderzoekers niet meer mogen gebruiken als ze aanspraak willen maken op Amerikaans overheidsgeld. Voor welke dilemma’s komen Nederlandse wetenschappers te staan nu de Verenigde Staten de aanval openen op (wereldwijde) academische vrijheid? Met één theatrale zwaai van zijn pen opende Donald Trump zijn aanval op de academische vrijheid. Complete onderzoeksgebieden zijn taboe verklaard. Deze ontwikkeling vindt niet geïsoleerd plaats. De wetenschap is internationaal nauw verweven in allerlei samenwerkingsverbanden. Op vrijwel alle onderzoeksgebieden liep de Amerikaanse wetenschap voorop\, qua prestaties en qua budgetten\, met name in de medische wetenschappen. Nu trekt het land zich terug uit internationale samenwerkingen en ontmantelt het doelbewust de wetenschap waar het zo goed in is. Hoe worden Nederlandse onderzoekers door de Amerikaanse sloopkogel geraakt? En wat is de bredere maatschappelijke context waarin dit gebeurt? Met de wereldwijde opkomst van rechts-populisme begint de onafhankelijke universiteit als pijler van de democratische rechtsstaat te wankelen. Hoe kunnen onderzoekers hun werk blijven doen in een wereld waarin intellectualisme steeds vaker als verdacht wordt gezien? DESCRIPTION:Honderdduizenden kinderen hebben het moeilijk op de basisschool omdat ze in armoede opgroeien: stress en oververmoeidheid hebben invloed op de schoolprestaties\, zegt het Jeugdeducatiefonds in het Schoolrapport van Nederland\, het land krijgt daarin een flinke onvoldoende. \n\nEr is bij deze kinderen thuis bijvoorbeeld geen geld voor een fiets of een bed\, en ongeveer 28.000 kinderen dragen geen bril omdat hun ouders dat niet kunnen betalen\, zo meldt het fonds op basis van eigen onderzoek en dat van andere organisaties. Het fonds werd 10 jaar geleden opgericht om in zulke gevallen hulp te bieden\, en werkt nu samen met zo’n 900 van de 6500 basisscholen in Nederland. Het fonds kocht afgelopen jaar bijvoorbeeld voor 229 kinderen een bed\, om te voorkomen dat deze kinderen op de grond moesten slapen of bij een broertje of zusje in bed. “Als kinderen niet goed kunnen zien of kunnen slapen\, kunnen ze ook niet goed leren”\, zegt het fonds in een toelichting. DESCRIPTION:Op 28 mei 2025 werd Blatten\, een gemeente en plaats in het Lötschental aan de oevers van Lonza\, in het Zwitserse kanton Wallis\, samen met de omliggende dalbodem voor 90% bedolven door een ijs- en steenlawine van 3 miljoen kubieke meter en nadien ontstond op de dalbodem stroomopwaarts een natuurlijk stuwmeer dat daar overgebleven huizen overstroomde. \nDe lawine bestond uit het omlaagstorten van een groot deel van de Birchgletsjer ten zuiden van het dorp\, die door het afbrokkelen van grote hoeveelheden puin van de hogergelegen top Kleines Nesthorn (3342 meter) instabiel geworden was. Vele huizen werden bedolven en verwoest. Toch gaat het kabinet door met de sloop van ons onderwijs: in de voorjaarsnota zijn zelfs extra bezuinigingen van 400 miljoen aangekondigd. Daarom wordt op 10 juni 2025 opnieuw door medewerkers en studenten in het hoger onderwijs het werk neergelegd\, de locatie van de stakingsmanifestatie is (verplaatst naar) De Dam in Amsterdam. De eis blijft staan: alle bezuinigingen moeten van tafel. Samen kunnen we dit moment gebruiken om te laten zien dat we aan haar kant staan en willen dat de meest prestigieuze prijs ter wereld naar haar en de artsen die actief zijn in Gaza gaat. Sluit je nu aan en deel dit met iedereen die je kent. Francesca Albanese is een van de krachtigste stemmen die oproept tot actie tegen mensenrechtenschendingen. DESCRIPTION:Pi Approximation Day is observed every year on July 22 all around the world. \nThe fraction 22/7 is an approximate value of Pi\, and there behind lays a specific reason why this day is observed on July 22. This day is celebrated on July 22 every year because the value of Pi is denoted by the fraction 22/7. Here\, in the fraction 22/7 which denoted Pi\, the numerator 22 symbolizes the date (22nd day of the month) and numerator 7 indicates the month (July). Approximations for the mathematical constant pi (π) in the history of mathematics reached an accuracy within 0.04% of the true value before the beginning of the Common Era. In Chinese mathematics\, this was improved to approximations correct to what corresponds to about seven decimal digits by the 5th century. Further progress was not made until the 14th century\, when Madhava of Sangamagrama developed approximations correct to eleven and then thirteen digits. Jamshīd al-Kāshī achieved sixteen digits next. Early modern mathematicians reached an accuracy of 35 digits by the beginning of the 17th century (Ludolph van Ceulen)\, and 126 digits by the 19th century (Jurij Vega)\, surpassing the accuracy required for any conceivable application outside of pure mathematics. The record of manual approximation of π is held by William Shanks\, who calculated 527 decimals correctly in 1853. Since the middle of the 20th century\, the approximation of π has been the task of electronic digital computers (for a comprehensive account\, see Chronology of computation of π). It covers the five detection types\, their parameters and statistics\, and the algorithm for finding them.\nSETI@home: Data Analysis and Findings describes the back end (Nebula) and its results: RFI removal\, candidate finding and ranking. It explains how artificial signals\, or ‘birdies’\, were used to optimize algorithms and estimate overall sensitivity.\n\nSETI@home (“SETI at home”) is a project of the Berkeley SETI Research Center to analyze radio signals with the aim of searching for signs of extraterrestrial intelligence. Until March 2020\, it was run as an Internet-based public volunteer computing project that employed the BOINC software platform. It is hosted by the Space Sciences Laboratory at the University of California\, Berkeley\, and is one of many activities undertaken as part of the worldwide SETI effort. SETI@home software was released to the public on May 17\, 1999\, making it the third large-scale use of volunteer computing over the Internet for research purposes\, after Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search (GIMPS) was launched in 1996 and distributed.net in 1997. Along with MilkyWay@home and Einstein@home\, it has the investigation of phenomena in interstellar space as its primary purpose. In March 2020\, the project stopped sending out new work to SETI@home users\, bringing the crowdsourced computing aspect of the project to a stop. At the time\, the team intended to shift focus onto the analysis and interpretation of the 20 years’ worth of accumulated data. However\, the team left open the possibility of eventually resuming volunteer computing using data from other radio telescopes\, such as MeerKAT and FAST. As of November 2021\, the science team has analysed the data and removed noisy signals (Radio Frequency Interference) using the Nebula tool they developed and will choose the top-scoring 100 or so multiplets to be observed using the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Telescope\, to which they have been granted 24 hours of observation time. On March 31\, 2020\, UC Berkeley stopped sending out new data for SETI@Home clients to process\, ending the effort for the time being. The program stated they were at a point of “diminishing returns” with the volunteer processing and needed to put the effort into hibernation while they processed the results. Until 2020\, SETI@home procured its data from the Arecibo Observatory facility that was operated by the National Astronomy and Ionosphere Center and administered by SRI International. The decreasing operating budget for the observatory has created a shortfall of funds which has not been made up from other sources such as private donors\, NASA\, other foreign research institutions\, nor private non-profit organizations such as SETI@home. However\, in the overall long-term views held by many involved with the SETI project\, any usable radio telescope could take over from Arecibo (which completely collapsed in December 2020)\, as all the SETI systems are portable and relocatable. \nLinks:\nSETI@home

DESCRIPTION:De aardbeving bij schiereiland Kamtsjatka op 30 juli 2025 om 11:24 (lokale tijd) was een beving met een magnitude 8\,8 op de schaal van Richter\, op 19 kilometer diepte. \nHet epicentrum van de beving lag in open zee op zo’n 130 kilometer van de Russische kust. De aardbeving heeft tot tsunamiwaarschuwingen geleid in onder meer Rusland\, Japan\, de Verenigde Staten\, China\, Hawaï en Ecuador. De hoge golven hebben ook Japan bereikt en in Hawaï waren evacuaties. Er zijn geen slachtoffers gemeld\, wel was er een tsunami die de Russische havenplaats Severo-Koerilsk onder water zette. Er volgden naschokken met een magnitude tot 6\,9. De Kljoetsjevskaja Sopka\, een vulkaan op het schiereiland Kamtsjatka en een van de hoogste vulkanen ter wereld\, barstte uit als gevolg van de beving. Ook de Krasjeninnikov vulkaan op het schiereiland barstte enkele dagen later op 3 augustus 2025 voor het eerst in 475 jaar weer uit.
