DESCRIPTION:De campagne ‘Water op de kaart’ van het Nederlands Instituut voor Ecologie (NIOO-KNAW) en de stichting Natuur & Milieu moet een beeld gaan geven van de kwaliteit van water rond een riooloverstort. \nZo’n 40 burgerwetenschappers verspreid over Nederland gaan in hun eigen buurt monsters nemen van de zogenaamde kleine oppervlaktewateren: de sloten of vijvers om de hoek. Dat water blijkt namelijk van niet zo’n goeie kwaliteit. Bij hevige plensbuien\, die in toenemende mate voorkomen\, komt het riool vol met water te zitten en stroomt het over naar omliggende sloten en plassen. Daar zit het probleem. Door die overstort komen stoffen uit het riool als medicijnresten en poep en plas in het oppervlaktewater terecht. SUMMARY:Fentale Volcano - signs of possible eruption 2024 - 2025
DESCRIPTION:Starting from late September 2024\, Ethiopia has experienced series of earthquakes ranging from 4.8 to 5.8 Richter magnitude scale with initial epicenter from Afar Region‘s Awash Fentale and spread across much of central Ethiopia. \nOn 6 October 2024\, a series of earthquakes with 4.9-magnitude tremor occurred starting to Afar Region‘s Awash Fentale area and spread into Oromia Region\, causing widespread concern. The epicenter was about 23 km northeast of Awash as the tremor occurred at the depth of 10 km and the shaking was felt across central Ethiopia. Over 30 homes collapsed in Afar while thousands fled to neighboring area as refuge. Pubic officials responded by shutdown of transportation infrastructure in the tremor zone to investigate the damage and power outages were likely to be measured. On 13 October\, a magnitude of 4.6 quake happened in Oromia Region at around 07:37. The shaking affected throughout central and eastern Ethiopia\, such as southern Afar\, southern Amhara\, and central Oromia regions\, northwestern Somali Region\, and the capital Addis Ababa. Also on 16 October\, an earthquake was observed in Metehara area in Oromia at 23:11 local time with 4.8 magnitude registered. The Volcano Discovery discovered that the tremor struck at the shallow depth of 10 km beneath the Earth surface. The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) was the first to detail seismic event\, providing crucial data for understanding its effects. According to initial reports\, residents nearby the epicenter were likely saw a quake\, though caused minimal damage. \nOn 29 December\, an earthquake reoccurred in afternoon and until in the morning 5.1 magnitude. Prior to this\, two earthquakes occurred in a week. In January 2025\, 10 earthquakes were recorded within 24 hours in a week. According to the US Geological Survey\, these multiple quakes were 4.3 to 5.1 on the Richter scale occurred around Fentale volcano in Awash. Since 3 January 2025\, signs of a volcanic eruption began to appear\, prompting authorities to move residents to temporary shelters. The Ethiopian Geological Institute posted a video in Facebook page depicting dust and smoke emerging from a volcano in Awash Fentale in Afar region. On that day\, another quake strike with the magnitude 5.8 in epicenter of Addis Ababa. Focus is de crossmediale titel van het platform NTR Wetenschap. Naast het tv-programma is er de Focus-podcast die wordt gepresenteerd door Lara Billie Rense. Het platform heeft een YouTube-kanaal en is actief op Facebook\, X\, LinkedIn\, Instagram en TikTok. \nHet Nederlandse stroomnet is overvol. Duizenden bedrijven staan op de wachtlijst voor een nieuwe of grotere aansluiting: een probleem voor dagelijkse werkzaamheden\, maar ook voor de verduurzaming van onze energievoorziening. Dit terwijl we niet langer kunnen wachten met de energietransitie. De wetenschap gaat op zoek naar oplossingen. De TU Delft werkt bijvoorbeeld aan krachtiger stroomkabels. DESCRIPTION:New trigger proposed for record-smashing 2022 Tonga eruption: previously unstudied data from a seismic wave\, detected 750 kilometers from the seamount\, may bolster tsunami early-warning systems. \nFifteen minutes before the massive January 2022 eruption of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcano\, a seismic wave was recorded by two distant seismic stations. Now\, researchers argue that similar early signals could be used to warn of other impending eruptions in remote oceanic volcanoes. The researchers propose that the seismic wave was caused by a fracture in a weak area of oceanic crust beneath the volcano’s caldera wall. That fracture allowed seawater and magma to pour into and mix together in the space above the volcano’s subsurface magma chamber\, explosively kickstarting the eruption. The research was published in Geophysical Research Letters\, an open-access AGU journal that publishes high-impact\, short-format reports with immediate implications spanning all Earth and space sciences. The results build on the researchers’ previous work monitoring remote volcanoes. DESCRIPTION:Carl Edward Sagan (/ˈseɪɡən/; November 9\, 1934 – December 20\, 1996) was an American astronomer\, cosmologist\, astrophysicist\, astrobiologist\, author\, science popularizer\, and science communicator in astronomy and other natural sciences. \nHe is best known for his work as a science popularizer and communicator. His best known scientific contribution is research on extraterrestrial life\, including experimental demonstration of the production of amino acids from basic chemicals by radiation. Sagan assembled the first physical messages sent into space: the Pioneer plaque and the Voyager Golden Record\, universal messages that could potentially be understood by any extraterrestrial intelligence that might find them. Sagan argued the now accepted hypothesis that the high surface temperatures of Venus can be attributed to and calculated using the greenhouse effect. \nSagan published more than 600 scientific papers and articles and was author\, co-author or editor of more than 20 books. He wrote many popular science books\, such as The Dragons of Eden\, Broca’s Brain and Pale Blue Dot\, and narrated and co-wrote the award-winning 1980 television series Cosmos: A Personal Voyage (+ deel 1). The most widely watched series in the history of American public television\, Cosmos has been seen by at least 500 million people across 60 different countries. The book Cosmos was published to accompany the series. He also wrote the science fiction novel Contact\, the basis for a 1997 film of the same name. His papers\, containing 595\,000 items\, are archived at The Library of Congress. \nSagan advocated scientific skeptical inquiry and the scientific method\, pioneered exobiology and promoted the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI). He spent most of his career as a professor of astronomy at Cornell University\, where he directed the Laboratory for Planetary Studies. Sagan and his works received numerous awards and honors\, including the NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal\, the National Academy of Sciences Public Welfare Medal\, the Pulitzer Prize for General Non-Fiction for his book The Dragons of Eden\, and\, regarding Cosmos: A Personal Voyage\, two Emmy Awards\, the Peabody Award\, and the Hugo Award. He married three times and had five children. Op zaterdag 9 november 2024 wordt het Groot Dictee uitgezonden vanuit de Centrale Bibliotheek in Rotterdam\, waar twintig Taalstaat-luisteraars het opnemen tegen twintig prominenten. De schrijver van het dictee is taalkundige\, cabaretier en tv-presentator Wim Daniëls. Gerdi Verbeet\, oud-voorzitter van de Tweede Kamer\, leest het voor. DESCRIPTION:The annual observance of the Week of Science and Peace is making an important contribution to the promotion of peace\, the Week encourages greater academic exchanges on a subject of universal importance while also generating greater awareness of the relationship of science and peace among the general public. \nBased on observances of Science and Peace Week to date\, it may be expected that participation each year will increase\, contributing to greater international understanding and opportunities for co-operation in the applications of science for the promotion of peace throughout the year. The Week of Science and Peace was first observed during 1986 as part of the observance of the International Year of Peace. The organization of events and activities for the week was undertaken as a non-governmental initiative; the secretariat for the International Year of Peace was informed of the preparatory activities and the final summary of events that occurred during the week. The organizers sought to encourage the broadest possible international participation in the observance. \nBased on the success of the 1986 observance\, the organizers continued their efforts in successive years. In recognition of the value of the annual observance\, the General Assembly adopted resolution 43/61 in December 1988\, which proclaims the “International Week of Science and Peace”\, to take place each year during the week in which 11 November falls. DESCRIPTION:Campagne aangemaakt door Kabinet sloopt hoger onderwijs: Onderwijs en onderzoek zijn belangrijker dan ooit! \nOp 14 november 2024 demonstratie in Utrecht tegen de aangekondigde maatregelen voor het hoger onderwijs. Laat je stem ook horen! Teken de petitie tegen deze plannen en sluit aan bij de demonstratie. Onze samenleving schreeuwt om goed opgeleide jonge mensen om de grote en complexe vraagstukken van onze tijd aan te pakken. Toch kondigt het kabinet-Schoof bezuinigingen van een miljard euro aan op het hoger onderwijs en de wetenschap: de grootste bezuiniging van de afgelopen decennia. Deze bezuinigingen komen boven op de al bestaande financiële tekorten\, met als gevolg meer overwerk\, slechte arbeidsomstandigheden\, versoberd onderwijs\, arbeidsongeschiktheid en het vertrek van medewerkers. Dit zal de toekomstige wetenschappers\, leraren\, verpleegkundigen en technici direct raken. We kunnen niet toekijken hoe dit kabinet belooft maatschappelijke problemen aan te pakken\, terwijl het tegelijkertijd bezuinigt op de opleidingen en het onderzoek die daar essentieel voor zijn. Ook betekent de Wet internationalisering in balans een aantasting van de wetenschappelijke kwaliteit\, impact en reputatie. Om de woningnood\, het lerarentekort en andere grote uitdagingen te overwinnen\, hebben we juist sterke hogescholen\, universiteiten en onderzoeksinstellingen nodig. Kabinet sloopt hoger onderwijs komt daarom in actie tegen deze bezuinigingen. Als maatschappelijke bewegingen van studenten\, onderwijspersoneel en de rest van de samenleving kunnen we niet toekijken hoe op onze toekomst wordt bezuinigd. \nDe voorgestelde bezuinigingen zullen een grote impact hebben op het hoger onderwijs en Nederland zal daar de negatieve effecten van ondervinden. Noodzakelijke vakgebieden en banen zullen verdwijnen. Door de afschaffing van de starters- en stimuleringsbeurzen en het fonds voor onderzoek en wetenschap\, zal er veel minder tijd zijn voor wetenschappelijk onderzoek\, terwijl de welvaart in Nederland daar wel grotendeels op gebaseerd is. Zonder professionals geen energietransitie\, zonder juristen geen rechtspraak\, zonder historici geen toekomstvisie en zonder medisch specialisten geen zorg. Daarnaast komt er een boete voor langstudeerders. Dit maakt studeren steeds moeilijker voor jongeren\, vooral wanneer zij moeten werken om hun studie te betalen. Veel studenten overwegen hun studie te staken of hier zelfs helemaal niet aan te beginnen als maatregelen\, zoals de langstudeerboete van €3000 per jaar\, worden doorgevoerd. De ongelijkheid in onze samenleving dreigt hierdoor verder toe te nemen. Hoger onderwijs raakt ons allemaal. De studenten van nu vormen de toekomst\, dus een bezuiniging op het onderwijs is een bezuiniging op ons allemaal. Daarom moeten we ons allemaal uitspreken.
