DESCRIPTION:De campagne ‘Water op de kaart’ van het Nederlands Instituut voor Ecologie (NIOO-KNAW) en de stichting Natuur & Milieu moet een beeld gaan geven van de kwaliteit van water rond een riooloverstort. \nZo’n 40 burgerwetenschappers verspreid over Nederland gaan in hun eigen buurt monsters nemen van de zogenaamde kleine oppervlaktewateren: de sloten of vijvers om de hoek. Dat water blijkt namelijk van niet zo’n goeie kwaliteit. Bij hevige plensbuien\, die in toenemende mate voorkomen\, komt het riool vol met water te zitten en stroomt het over naar omliggende sloten en plassen. Daar zit het probleem. Door die overstort komen stoffen uit het riool als medicijnresten en poep en plas in het oppervlaktewater terecht. SUMMARY:Fentale Volcano - signs of possible eruption 2024 - 2025
DESCRIPTION:Starting from late September 2024\, Ethiopia has experienced series of earthquakes ranging from 4.8 to 5.8 Richter magnitude scale with initial epicenter from Afar Region‘s Awash Fentale and spread across much of central Ethiopia. \nOn 6 October 2024\, a series of earthquakes with 4.9-magnitude tremor occurred starting to Afar Region‘s Awash Fentale area and spread into Oromia Region\, causing widespread concern. The epicenter was about 23 km northeast of Awash as the tremor occurred at the depth of 10 km and the shaking was felt across central Ethiopia. Over 30 homes collapsed in Afar while thousands fled to neighboring area as refuge. Pubic officials responded by shutdown of transportation infrastructure in the tremor zone to investigate the damage and power outages were likely to be measured. On 13 October\, a magnitude of 4.6 quake happened in Oromia Region at around 07:37. The shaking affected throughout central and eastern Ethiopia\, such as southern Afar\, southern Amhara\, and central Oromia regions\, northwestern Somali Region\, and the capital Addis Ababa. Also on 16 October\, an earthquake was observed in Metehara area in Oromia at 23:11 local time with 4.8 magnitude registered. The Volcano Discovery discovered that the tremor struck at the shallow depth of 10 km beneath the Earth surface. The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) was the first to detail seismic event\, providing crucial data for understanding its effects. According to initial reports\, residents nearby the epicenter were likely saw a quake\, though caused minimal damage. \nOn 29 December\, an earthquake reoccurred in afternoon and until in the morning 5.1 magnitude. Prior to this\, two earthquakes occurred in a week. In January 2025\, 10 earthquakes were recorded within 24 hours in a week. According to the US Geological Survey\, these multiple quakes were 4.3 to 5.1 on the Richter scale occurred around Fentale volcano in Awash. Since 3 January 2025\, signs of a volcanic eruption began to appear\, prompting authorities to move residents to temporary shelters. The Ethiopian Geological Institute posted a video in Facebook page depicting dust and smoke emerging from a volcano in Awash Fentale in Afar region. On that day\, another quake strike with the magnitude 5.8 in epicenter of Addis Ababa. DESCRIPTION:Click image to read\nAI-based metagenomic mining greatly expands the diversity of the global RNA virosphere. \nCurrent metagenomic tools can fail to identify highly divergent RNA viruses. Scientists developed a deep learning algorithm\, termed LucaProt\, to discover highly divergent RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRP) sequences in 10\,487 metatranscriptomes generated from diverse global ecosystems. LucaProt integrates both sequence and predicted structural information\, enabling the accurate detection of RdRP sequences. Using this approach\, they identified 161\,979 potential RNA virus species and 180 RNA virus supergroups\, including many previously poorly studied groups\, as well as RNA virus genomes of exceptional length (up to 47\,250 nucleotides) and genomic complexity. A subset of these novel RNA viruses was confirmed by RT-PCR and RNA/DNA sequencing. Newly discovered RNA viruses were present in diverse environments\, including air\, hot springs\, and hydrothermal vents\, with virus diversity and abundance varying substantially among ecosystems. Het programma volgde in 2023 het NTR-programma Atlas op als wetenschapsprogramma van de Nederlandse Publieke Omroep. \nIn het programma gaan presentatoren Petra Grijzen en Lara Billie Rense op zoek naar oplossingen voor actuele problemen in de wereld. Focus is de crossmediale titel van het platform NTR Wetenschap. Naast het tv-programma is er de Focus-podcast die wordt gepresenteerd door Lara Billie Rense. Het platform heeft een YouTube-kanaal en is actief op Facebook\, X\, LinkedIn\, Instagram en TikTok. \nHet Nederlandse stroomnet is overvol. Duizenden bedrijven staan op de wachtlijst voor een nieuwe of grotere aansluiting: een probleem voor dagelijkse werkzaamheden\, maar ook voor de verduurzaming van onze energievoorziening. Dit terwijl we niet langer kunnen wachten met de energietransitie. De wetenschap gaat op zoek naar oplossingen. De TU Delft werkt bijvoorbeeld aan krachtiger stroomkabels. For example\, the water molecule has an molar mass of 18\, therefore one mole of water weighs 18 grams. Similarly\, a mole of neon has a molar mass of 20 grams. In general\, one mole of any substance contains Avogadro’s Number of molecules or atoms of that substance. DESCRIPTION:New trigger proposed for record-smashing 2022 Tonga eruption: previously unstudied data from a seismic wave\, detected 750 kilometers from the seamount\, may bolster tsunami early-warning systems. \nFifteen minutes before the massive January 2022 eruption of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcano\, a seismic wave was recorded by two distant seismic stations. Now\, researchers argue that similar early signals could be used to warn of other impending eruptions in remote oceanic volcanoes. The researchers propose that the seismic wave was caused by a fracture in a weak area of oceanic crust beneath the volcano’s caldera wall. That fracture allowed seawater and magma to pour into and mix together in the space above the volcano’s subsurface magma chamber\, explosively kickstarting the eruption. The research was published in Geophysical Research Letters\, an open-access AGU journal that publishes high-impact\, short-format reports with immediate implications spanning all Earth and space sciences. The results build on the researchers’ previous work monitoring remote volcanoes. In esoterischen Kreisen sind sich viele Menschen einig: Menschen und Tiere werden von einem energetischen Kranz umgeben\, unserer “Aus-Strahlung”\, die von besonders sensiblen Wesen wahrgenommen werden kann\, die “Aura”. Als Diagnose bei Epilepsie oder Migräne ist die Aura auch in der Wissenschaft präsent. In Bezug auf die “Ausstrahlung” von Mensch und Tier tat sich die Wissenschaft allerdings bisher schwer – einfach deshalb\, weil nichts gemessen werden konnte. Dies hat sich nun mit empfindlicheren Messgeräten geändert\, wie Forschende des Human Health Therapeutics Research Center des National Research Council of Canada (NRC) herausgefunden haben. DESCRIPTION:Carl Edward Sagan (/ˈseɪɡən/; November 9\, 1934 – December 20\, 1996) was an American astronomer\, cosmologist\, astrophysicist\, astrobiologist\, author\, science popularizer\, and science communicator in astronomy and other natural sciences. \nHe is best known for his work as a science popularizer and communicator. His best known scientific contribution is research on extraterrestrial life\, including experimental demonstration of the production of amino acids from basic chemicals by radiation. Sagan assembled the first physical messages sent into space: the Pioneer plaque and the Voyager Golden Record\, universal messages that could potentially be understood by any extraterrestrial intelligence that might find them. Sagan argued the now accepted hypothesis that the high surface temperatures of Venus can be attributed to and calculated using the greenhouse effect. \nSagan published more than 600 scientific papers and articles and was author\, co-author or editor of more than 20 books. He wrote many popular science books\, such as The Dragons of Eden\, Broca’s Brain and Pale Blue Dot\, and narrated and co-wrote the award-winning 1980 television series Cosmos: A Personal Voyage (+ deel 1). The most widely watched series in the history of American public television\, Cosmos has been seen by at least 500 million people across 60 different countries. The book Cosmos was published to accompany the series. He also wrote the science fiction novel Contact\, the basis for a 1997 film of the same name. His papers\, containing 595\,000 items\, are archived at The Library of Congress. \nSagan advocated scientific skeptical inquiry and the scientific method\, pioneered exobiology and promoted the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI). He spent most of his career as a professor of astronomy at Cornell University\, where he directed the Laboratory for Planetary Studies. Sagan and his works received numerous awards and honors\, including the NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal\, the National Academy of Sciences Public Welfare Medal\, the Pulitzer Prize for General Non-Fiction for his book The Dragons of Eden\, and\, regarding Cosmos: A Personal Voyage\, two Emmy Awards\, the Peabody Award\, and the Hugo Award. He married three times and had five children. DESCRIPTION:Het Groot Dictee der Nederlandse Taal is een wedstrijd in het correct spellen van de Nederlandse taal. \nHet dictee werd van 1990 tot en met 2016 jaarlijks in de derde week van december gelijktijdig in Nederland en in België via de televisie werd uitgezonden\, sinds 2018 wordt het dictee via de radio uitgezonden\, door NPO Radio 1. Via de site van NPO Radio 1 en via NPO 1 Extra wordt het dictee met beeld uitgezonden. Op zaterdag 9 november 2024 wordt het Groot Dictee uitgezonden vanuit de Centrale Bibliotheek in Rotterdam\, waar twintig Taalstaat-luisteraars het opnemen tegen twintig prominenten. De schrijver van het dictee is taalkundige\, cabaretier en tv-presentator Wim Daniëls. Gerdi Verbeet\, oud-voorzitter van de Tweede Kamer\, leest het voor. En zoals altijd is de presentatie van het programma in handen van Frits Spits.
