DESCRIPTION:De campagne ‘Water op de kaart’ van het Nederlands Instituut voor Ecologie (NIOO-KNAW) en de stichting Natuur & Milieu moet een beeld gaan geven van de kwaliteit van water rond een riooloverstort. \nZo’n 40 burgerwetenschappers verspreid over Nederland gaan in hun eigen buurt monsters nemen van de zogenaamde kleine oppervlaktewateren: de sloten of vijvers om de hoek. Dat water blijkt namelijk van niet zo’n goeie kwaliteit. Bij hevige plensbuien\, die in toenemende mate voorkomen\, komt het riool vol met water te zitten en stroomt het over naar omliggende sloten en plassen. Daar zit het probleem. Door die overstort komen stoffen uit het riool als medicijnresten en poep en plas in het oppervlaktewater terecht. DESCRIPTION:Starting from late September 2024\, Ethiopia has experienced series of earthquakes ranging from 4.8 to 5.8 Richter magnitude scale with initial epicenter from Afar Region‘s Awash Fentale and spread across much of central Ethiopia. \nOn 6 October 2024\, a series of earthquakes with 4.9-magnitude tremor occurred starting to Afar Region‘s Awash Fentale area and spread into Oromia Region\, causing widespread concern. The epicenter was about 23 km northeast of Awash as the tremor occurred at the depth of 10 km and the shaking was felt across central Ethiopia. Over 30 homes collapsed in Afar while thousands fled to neighboring area as refuge. Pubic officials responded by shutdown of transportation infrastructure in the tremor zone to investigate the damage and power outages were likely to be measured. On 13 October\, a magnitude of 4.6 quake happened in Oromia Region at around 07:37. The shaking affected throughout central and eastern Ethiopia\, such as southern Afar\, southern Amhara\, and central Oromia regions\, northwestern Somali Region\, and the capital Addis Ababa. Also on 16 October\, an earthquake was observed in Metehara area in Oromia at 23:11 local time with 4.8 magnitude registered. The Volcano Discovery discovered that the tremor struck at the shallow depth of 10 km beneath the Earth surface. The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) was the first to detail seismic event\, providing crucial data for understanding its effects. According to initial reports\, residents nearby the epicenter were likely saw a quake\, though caused minimal damage. \nOn 29 December\, an earthquake reoccurred in afternoon and until in the morning 5.1 magnitude. Prior to this\, two earthquakes occurred in a week. In January 2025\, 10 earthquakes were recorded within 24 hours in a week. According to the US Geological Survey\, these multiple quakes were 4.3 to 5.1 on the Richter scale occurred around Fentale volcano in Awash. Since 3 January 2025\, signs of a volcanic eruption began to appear\, prompting authorities to move residents to temporary shelters. The Ethiopian Geological Institute posted a video in Facebook page depicting dust and smoke emerging from a volcano in Awash Fentale in Afar region. On that day\, another quake strike with the magnitude 5.8 in epicenter of Addis Ababa. DESCRIPTION:De Dag van de Leraar\, ook Dag van de Leerkracht(en) genoemd\, is een jaarlijks terugkerende  speciale dag om waardering te tonen voor onderwijzers. \nDe dag wordt gevierd in zo’n 88 landen wereldwijd. De datum is sinds 1962 verschillende keren veranderd\, waardoor de dag in verschillende landen op verschillende datums gevierd wordt. In onder andere België\, Duitsland\, Nederland en het Verenigd Koninkrijk valt de dag op 5 oktober. Op deze dag wordt de waardering van leerkrachten benadrukt en is er aandacht voor het onderwijs als belangrijke factor in de maatschappij. Dit kan soms gepaard gaan met vieringen om hen te eren voor hun speciale bijdrage in een specifiek domein\, of voor de gemeenschap in het algemeen. \nEr vinden verschillende evenementen plaats om de dag te markeren\, van lezingen en spreekbeurten tot theater. Het is voor veel scholen ook het moment om het onderwijzend personeel een bedankje te geven en hun leraren en leraressen in het zonnetje te zetten. Van scheurkalender en boekenbon tot een dagje uit worden er geschenken gegeven aan leraren en leraressen. DESCRIPTION:Ada Lovelace Day is an annual event held on the second Tuesday of October to celebrate and raise awareness of the contributions of women to Science\, Technology\, Engineering\, and Mathematics (STEM) fields\, it is named after mathematician and computer science pioneer Ada Lovelace. \nIt started in 2009 as a “day of blogging” and has since become a multi-national event with conferences. The day was founded in the United Kingdom in 2009 by Suw Charman-Anderson on the second Tuesday in October as a means of raising awareness about the contributions of women to science\, technology\, engineering\, and mathematics (STEM) fields. In 2022\, Charman-Anderson announced that this would be the last year in which the organization that she founded\, Finding Ada\, would organize an annual flagship Ada Lovelace Day event in England. However\, the Royal Institution stepped in with funding and the organization Ada Lovelace Day has carried on. Since its inception\, Ada Lovelace Day has become international in scope\, with events organized by groups ranging from museums\, professional societies\, universities\, colleges and high schools. While Ada Lovelace Day is the second Tuesday of October\, events celebrating women in STEM typically span the period of October and November\, and include diverse activities ranging from in-person and virtual Wikipedia Editathons to panel discussions and film screenings. While this celebration of the often overlooked contributions of women in STEM was named for Ada Lovelace\, activities have expanded since 2009 to highlight the diverse contributions of women in STEM over time and different countries. DESCRIPTION:Click image to read\nAI-based metagenomic mining greatly expands the diversity of the global RNA virosphere. \nCurrent metagenomic tools can fail to identify highly divergent RNA viruses. Scientists developed a deep learning algorithm\, termed LucaProt\, to discover highly divergent RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRP) sequences in 10\,487 metatranscriptomes generated from diverse global ecosystems. LucaProt integrates both sequence and predicted structural information\, enabling the accurate detection of RdRP sequences. Using this approach\, they identified 161\,979 potential RNA virus species and 180 RNA virus supergroups\, including many previously poorly studied groups\, as well as RNA virus genomes of exceptional length (up to 47\,250 nucleotides) and genomic complexity. A subset of these novel RNA viruses was confirmed by RT-PCR and RNA/DNA sequencing. Newly discovered RNA viruses were present in diverse environments\, including air\, hot springs\, and hydrothermal vents\, with virus diversity and abundance varying substantially among ecosystems. Focus is de crossmediale titel van het platform NTR Wetenschap. Naast het tv-programma is er de Focus-podcast die wordt gepresenteerd door Lara Billie Rense. Het platform heeft een YouTube-kanaal en is actief op Facebook\, X\, LinkedIn\, Instagram en TikTok. \nHet Nederlandse stroomnet is overvol. Duizenden bedrijven staan op de wachtlijst voor een nieuwe of grotere aansluiting: een probleem voor dagelijkse werkzaamheden\, maar ook voor de verduurzaming van onze energievoorziening. Dit terwijl we niet langer kunnen wachten met de energietransitie. De wetenschap gaat op zoek naar oplossingen. De TU Delft werkt bijvoorbeeld aan krachtiger stroomkabels. For example\, the water molecule has an molar mass of 18\, therefore one mole of water weighs 18 grams. Similarly\, a mole of neon has a molar mass of 20 grams.
