When embedded in transparent crystals and probed with vacuum-ultraviolet light\, this nuclear transition provides a reference less sensitive to environmental noise than electronic transitions. Current work focuses on engineering host materials\, controlling and quenching excitations\, and understanding how crystal defects shape nuclear behaviour; effectively building a nuclear clock. This breakthrough could enable innovations in navigation\, sensing\, and communications\, as well as unlock new insights in fields such as relativity\, dark matter\, and fundamental constants. Sinds de Russische inval in Oekraïne in 2022 en de wereldwijde toename van conflicten lijkt dit een logische keuze: we willen ons kunnen verdedigen en investeren in veiligheid. Maar is bewapening de enige weg naar veiligheid? Nog niet zo lang geleden volgde Europa een heel andere koers. Na het einde van de Koude Oorlog daalden de defensiebudgetten\, werden chemische wapens vernietigd en groeide het geloof in diplomatie\, internationale samenwerking en vreedzaam conflictbeheer. Inmiddels kiest Europa opnieuw voor bewapening: er komen nieuwe gevechtsvliegtuigen en drones\, de herinvoering van de dienstplicht staat ter discussie en jongeren melden zich aan als reservist. Is dit uitsluitend het gevolg van de dreiging vanuit Rusland? Hoe ziet de herbewapening van Europa eruit? En wat zijn argumenten voor pacifisme? \nIn dit Kenniscafé wordt de remilitarisering vanuit verschillende perspectieven onderzocht. Moderator Jelte Posthumus spreekt onder andere met hoogleraar Internationaal Recht Marcel Brus over de complexiteit van oorlogsrecht in hybride oorlogsvoering\, zoals cyberaanvallen\, desinformatie of proxy wars. Ook schuift universitair docent Militaire Geschiedenis Kim Bootsma aan\, die de geschiedenis van dienstplicht in Europa toelicht en onder meer bespreekt wat deze remilitarisering betekent voor de bevordering van gendergelijkheid in het leger. Bovendien licht Willem de Haan\, socioloog\, journalist en betrokken bij de Nieuwe Vredesbeweging\, toe waarom hij oorlog de meest primitieve manier van conflictoplossing vindt. DESCRIPTION:Carl Edward Sagan (/ˈseɪɡən/; November 9\, 1934 – December 20\, 1996) was an American astronomer\, cosmologist\, astrophysicist\, astrobiologist\, author\, science popularizer\, and science communicator in astronomy and other natural sciences. \nHe is best known for his work as a science popularizer and communicator. His best known scientific contribution is research on extraterrestrial life\, including experimental demonstration of the production of amino acids from basic chemicals by radiation. Sagan assembled the first physical messages sent into space: the Pioneer plaque and the Voyager Golden Record\, universal messages that could potentially be understood by any extraterrestrial intelligence that might find them. Sagan argued the now accepted hypothesis that the high surface temperatures of Venus can be attributed to and calculated using the greenhouse effect. Sagan published more than 600 scientific papers and articles and was author\, co-author or editor of more than 20 books. He wrote many popular science books\, such as The Dragons of Eden\, Broca’s Brain and Pale Blue Dot\, and narrated and co-wrote the award-winning 1980 television series Cosmos: A Personal Voyage (+ deel 1). The most widely watched series in the history of American public television\, Cosmos has been seen by at least 500 million people across 60 different countries. The book Cosmos was published to accompany the series. He also wrote the science fiction novel Contact\, the basis for a 1997 film of the same name. His papers\, containing 595\,000 items\, are archived at The Library of Congress. Sagan advocated scientific skeptical inquiry and the scientific method\, pioneered exobiology and promoted the Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence (SETI). He spent most of his career as a professor of astronomy at Cornell University\, where he directed the Laboratory for Planetary Studies. Sagan and his works received numerous awards and honors\, including the NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal\, the National Academy of Sciences Public Welfare Medal\, the Pulitzer Prize for General Non-Fiction for his book The Dragons of Eden\, and\, regarding Cosmos: A Personal Voyage\, two Emmy Awards\, the Peabody Award\, and the Hugo Award. He married three times and had five children. DESCRIPTION:The annual observance of the Week of Science and Peace is making an important contribution to the promotion of peace\, the Week encourages greater academic exchanges on a subject of universal importance while also generating greater awareness of the relationship of science and peace among the general public. \nBased on observances of Science and Peace Week to date\, it may be expected that participation each year will increase\, contributing to greater international understanding and opportunities for co-operation in the applications of science for the promotion of peace throughout the year. The Week of Science and Peace was first observed during 1986 as part of the observance of the International Year of Peace. The organization of events and activities for the week was undertaken as a non-governmental initiative; the secretariat for the International Year of Peace was informed of the preparatory activities and the final summary of events that occurred during the week. The organizers sought to encourage the broadest possible international participation in the observance. Based on the success of the 1986 observance\, the organizers continued their efforts in successive years. In recognition of the value of the annual observance\, the General Assembly adopted resolution 43/61 in December 1988\, which proclaims the “International Week of Science and Peace”\, to take place each year during the week in which 11 November falls. DESCRIPTION:Celebrated every 10 November\, World Science Day for Peace and Development highlights the significant role of science in society and the need to engage the wider public in debates on emerging scientific issues\, it also underlines the importance and relevance of science in our daily lives. \nBy linking science more closely with society\, World Science Day for Peace and Development aims to ensure that citizens are kept informed of developments in science. It also underscores the role scientists play in broadening our understanding of the remarkable\, fragile planet we call home and in making our societies more sustainable. The Day offers the opportunity to mobilize all actors around the topic of science for peace and development – from government officials to the media to school pupils. UNESCO strongly encourages all to join in celebrating World Science Day for Peace and Development by organizing your own event or activity on the day. The organization of a focused event related to the commitment to science and society was one of the positive outcomes of the 1999 World Conference on Science in Budapest. It was considered an opportunity to reaffirm each year the commitment to attaining the goals proclaimed in the Declaration on Science and the Use of Scientific Knowledge and to follow up the recommendations of the Science Agenda: Framework for Action. Since its proclamation by UNESCO in 2001\, World Science Day for Peace and Development has generated many concrete projects\, programmes\, and funding for science around the world. The Day has also helped foster cooperation between scientists living in regions marred by conflict—one example being the UNESCO-supported creation of the Israeli-Palestinian Science Organization (IPSO). The rationale of celebrating a World Science Day for Peace and Development has its roots in the importance of the role of science and scientists for sustainable societies and in the need to inform and involve citizens in science. In this sense\, a World Science Day for Peace and Development offers an opportunity to show the general public the relevance of science in their lives and to engage them in discussions. DESCRIPTION:De Duitse delegatie op weg naar de onderhandelingen\, 7 november 1918\nDe Wapenstilstand van 11 november 1918 werd ondertekend in het wapenstilstandsrijtuig in het Bos van Compiègne tussen de Geallieerden en het Duitse Rijk. \nOp die datum kwam er\, nadat kort voordien al wapenstilstanden afgesloten waren met Oostenrijk-Hongarije en Bulgarije\, een definitief eind aan de gevechten in de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Al ging het strikt gesproken niet om een capitulatie\, toch betekende dit door de Duitsers aangevraagde akkoord de totale nederlaag voor het Duitse Keizerrijk.
