DESCRIPTION:Pi Approximation Day is observed every year on July 22 all around the world. \nThe fraction 22/7 is an approximate value of Pi\, and there behind lays a specific reason why this day is observed on July 22. This day is celebrated on July 22 every year because the value of Pi is denoted by the fraction 22/7. Here\, in the fraction 22/7 which denoted Pi\, the numerator 22 symbolizes the date (22nd day of the month) and numerator 7 indicates the month (July). Approximations for the mathematical constant pi (π) in the history of mathematics reached an accuracy within 0.04% of the true value before the beginning of the Common Era. In Chinese mathematics\, this was improved to approximations correct to what corresponds to about seven decimal digits by the 5th century. Further progress was not made until the 14th century\, when Madhava of Sangamagrama developed approximations correct to eleven and then thirteen digits. Jamshīd al-Kāshī achieved sixteen digits next. Early modern mathematicians reached an accuracy of 35 digits by the beginning of the 17th century (Ludolph van Ceulen)\, and 126 digits by the 19th century (Jurij Vega)\, surpassing the accuracy required for any conceivable application outside of pure mathematics. The record of manual approximation of π is held by William Shanks\, who calculated 527 decimals correctly in 1853. Since the middle of the 20th century\, the approximation of π has been the task of electronic digital computers (for a comprehensive account\, see Chronology of computation of π). It covers the five detection types\, their parameters and statistics\, and the algorithm for finding them.\nSETI@home: Data Analysis and Findings describes the back end (Nebula) and its results: RFI removal\, candidate finding and ranking. It explains how artificial signals\, or ‘birdies’\, were used to optimize algorithms and estimate overall sensitivity.\n\nSETI@home (“SETI at home”) is a project of the Berkeley SETI Research Center to analyze radio signals with the aim of searching for signs of extraterrestrial intelligence. Until March 2020\, it was run as an Internet-based public volunteer computing project that employed the BOINC software platform. It is hosted by the Space Sciences Laboratory at the University of California\, Berkeley\, and is one of many activities undertaken as part of the worldwide SETI effort. SETI@home software was released to the public on May 17\, 1999\, making it the third large-scale use of volunteer computing over the Internet for research purposes\, after Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search (GIMPS) was launched in 1996 and distributed.net in 1997. Along with MilkyWay@home and Einstein@home\, it has the investigation of phenomena in interstellar space as its primary purpose. In March 2020\, the project stopped sending out new work to SETI@home users\, bringing the crowdsourced computing aspect of the project to a stop. At the time\, the team intended to shift focus onto the analysis and interpretation of the 20 years’ worth of accumulated data. However\, the team left open the possibility of eventually resuming volunteer computing using data from other radio telescopes\, such as MeerKAT and FAST. As of November 2021\, the science team has analysed the data and removed noisy signals (Radio Frequency Interference) using the Nebula tool they developed and will choose the top-scoring 100 or so multiplets to be observed using the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Telescope\, to which they have been granted 24 hours of observation time. On March 31\, 2020\, UC Berkeley stopped sending out new data for SETI@Home clients to process\, ending the effort for the time being. The program stated they were at a point of “diminishing returns” with the volunteer processing and needed to put the effort into hibernation while they processed the results. Until 2020\, SETI@home procured its data from the Arecibo Observatory facility that was operated by the National Astronomy and Ionosphere Center and administered by SRI International. The decreasing operating budget for the observatory has created a shortfall of funds which has not been made up from other sources such as private donors\, NASA\, other foreign research institutions\, nor private non-profit organizations such as SETI@home. However\, in the overall long-term views held by many involved with the SETI project\, any usable radio telescope could take over from Arecibo (which completely collapsed in December 2020)\, as all the SETI systems are portable and relocatable. \nLinks:\nSETI@home

DESCRIPTION:De aardbeving bij schiereiland Kamtsjatka op 30 juli 2025 om 11:24 (lokale tijd) was een beving met een magnitude 8\,8 op de schaal van Richter\, op 19 kilometer diepte. \nHet epicentrum van de beving lag in open zee op zo’n 130 kilometer van de Russische kust. De aardbeving heeft tot tsunamiwaarschuwingen geleid in onder meer Rusland\, Japan\, de Verenigde Staten\, China\, Hawaï en Ecuador. De hoge golven hebben ook Japan bereikt en in Hawaï waren evacuaties. Er zijn geen slachtoffers gemeld\, wel was er een tsunami die de Russische havenplaats Severo-Koerilsk onder water zette. Er volgden naschokken met een magnitude tot 6\,9. De Kljoetsjevskaja Sopka\, een vulkaan op het schiereiland Kamtsjatka en een van de hoogste vulkanen ter wereld\, barstte uit als gevolg van de beving. Ook de Krasjeninnikov vulkaan op het schiereiland barstte enkele dagen later op 3 augustus 2025 voor het eerst in 475 jaar weer uit. DESCRIPTION:Time lapse images from the camera south of the calving front. a\, 2023-08-24 06:57 UTC\, b\, 2023-08-24 07:17 UTC\nAs glaciers melt\, huge chunks of ice break free and splash into the sea\, generating tsunami-size waves and leaving behind a powerful wake as they drift away. \nThis process\, called calving\, is important for researchers to understand. But the front of a glacier is a dangerous place for data collection.  To solve this problem\, a team of researchers from the University of Washington and collaborating institutions used a fiber-optic cable to capture calving dynamics across the fjord of the Eqalorutsit Kangilliit Sermiat glacier in South Greenland. Data collected from the cable allowed them to document — without getting too close — one of the key processes that is accelerating the rate of glacial mass loss and in turn\, threatening the stability of ice sheets\, with consequences for global ocean currents and local ecosystems.  The data provides\, for the first time\, a deeper look at the relationship between ice and the water it collapses into\, from surface waves to disturbances within the water column. DESCRIPTION:Jaarlijks organiseert de Wespenstichting de Nationale Wespentelling\, iedereen in Nederland is uitgenodigd om mee te doen: Want wespen tellen ook mee! \nDe Wespentelling is van zaterdag 16 tot en met zondag 24 augustus 2025. Je mag meerdere keren tellen (zowel meerdere keren per dag als meerdere dagen)\, als je die tellingen dan wel op verschillende plekken doet. Loop voor 30 minuten een rondje door de tuin in de periode 16-24 augustus. Kijk goed en noteer gedurende 30 minuten alle wespen die je ziet. Probeer een gevarieerd gebied in de omgeving te zoeken waar ook veel struiken en bomen in de buurt staan. 30 minuten voorbij? Voer je resultaten in op het telformulier. Belangrijk: als je tijdens je 30 minuten telling geen wespen ziet\, is dit ook belangrijk om dit door te geven. Deze data zijn net zo belangrijk als tellingen waar wel wespen gezien zijn. Vul dan ‘0 wespen gezien’ in het telformulier. Een wesp is een insect van de orde Hymenoptera en suborde Apocrita dat noch een bij is noch een mier. De Apocrita hebben een gemeenschappelijke evolutionaire voorouder en vormen een clade; wespen vormen als groep geen clade\, maar zijn parafyletisch ten opzichte van bijen en mieren. In Nederland komen ongeveer zesduizend (6.000) soorten wespen voor. Hiervan zijn er ongeveer vijftien die een sociale levenswijze hebben\, en net als honingbijen in kolonies samenleven. Deze sociale wespen verdelen we weer in vier groepen: \n\nKortkopwespen\nLangkopwespen\nVeldwespen\nHoornaars\n\nNaast deze sociale wespen\, ook wel papierwespen genoemd\, zijn er dus nog duizenden andere wespensoorten. DESCRIPTION:De bekendste eruptie van de Vesuvius was die van 24 en 25 augustus in het jaar 79 en was de gewelddadigste uitbarsting die tot nu toe plaatsvond. \nDe top van de vulkaan explodeerde en de Romeinse steden Pompeii en Stabiae werden volledig bedolven onder as en puimsteen\, terwijl een pyroclastische golf Herculaneum verwoestte. Ook verspreidden giftige gassen als koolstofmono-oxide (CO) zich door Pompeii. Rond 10 duizend mensen werden gedood\, slechts 2000 lichamen zijn teruggevonden. Uit recent wetenschappelijk onderzoek is gebleken dat mensen levend werden gekookt\, “gezandstraald” door de gloeiend hete aswolk en vervolgens levend ontvleesd. De hersenpan explodeerde doordat de temperatuur van het superhete gas tussen de 500 en 550 graden Celsius bedroeg. Andere uitbarstingen: 1631 (bijna even zwaar als de uitbarsting van 79)\, 1794\, 1826\, 1906\, 1913\, 1926\, 1929 en 1944. DESCRIPTION:Klik op afbeelding om te lezen\nOn 31 August 2025\, at 23:47 AFT (19:17 UTC)\, a Mw 6.0 earthquake struck Nangarhar and Kunar provinces in Afghanistan\, near the border with Pakistan. More than 1\,100 people were killed and more than 3\,500 others were injured. \nThe epicenter of the quake was located in Nurgal District\, Kunar Province. It had a hypocenter 8 kilometres (5 miles) beneath the surface\, and the shaking had a maximum Modified Mercalli intensity of IX (Violent) in Nurgal. Several geological and structural factors led to a relatively heavy impact for the earthquake’s relatively moderate size\, with around 3\,000 deaths\, 4\,000 injuries and 8\,000 collapsed homes; almost all of the casualties and destruction occurred in five districts of Kunar Province\, where almost all buildings were damaged or destroyed\, with nearby provinces also suffering damage and casualites. It was the deadliest earthquake to affect Afghanistan since 1998. Another earthquake\, the second within a week\, has hit Afghanistan on Tuesday 02 September as the nation was already reeling from a devastating quake over the weekend. Tuesday’s magnitude 5.2 tremor hit near Jalalabad\, which was also the epicenter of Sunday’s quake. Rescuers are struggling to reach the remote\, mountainous area. Entire villages have been destroyed and it’s feared the death toll could rise further\, with many people feared trapped under the rubble. In een werkplaats\, half sterrenwacht\, half sciencefiction-decor\, bouwt sterrenkundige Casper Farret Jentink met Zwitserse precisie instrumenten die het licht van verre sterren tot op vijf siliciumatomen nauwkeurig kunnen meten\, op zoek naar een tweede aarde. Exoplaneten\, planeten die draaien om een andere ster dan de zon\, zijn onzichtbaar voor het oog\, maar traceerbaar via de dure speeltjes van onder andere Jentink. Er werden er al duizenden gevonden\, maar geen enkele zoals onze eigen aarde. Jentink is vastbesloten daar verandering in te brengen\, via zelfgebouwde instrumenten met namen als Ristretto en Espresso. Want als we leven vinden\, of juist niet\, zegt dat iets over onszelf. Zijn we een uniek en kwetsbaar kosmisch toeval? Of zijn we een van de velen\, omdat het leven ondanks alle uitdagingen taai en volhardend is. DESCRIPTION:Van 8 tot en met 15 september 2025 is de Week van lezen en schrijven\, dan wordt extra aandacht gevraagd voor beperkte basisvaardigheden. \nDat gebeurt met het Nederlandse publiek\, taalnetwerken\, gemeenten en bedrijven. Vele partners\, bedrijven\, gemeenten en organisaties organiseren activiteiten tijdens de Week van lezen en schrijven. Van theatervoorstellingen tot open inloopdagen. En van puzzeltochten tot het uitdelen van letterkoekjes. En ook lokale radiostations zetten zich ervoor in. Dit jaar doen veel lokale radiostations mee met de Week van lezen en schrijven. Ervaringsdeskundigen van Stichting ABC en adviseurs van Stichting Lezen en Schrijven worden in het hele land bevraagd door plaatselijke programmamakers. We zijn blij met die betrokkenheid\, want uit onderzoek blijkt dat mensen die moeite hebben met lezen graag naar lokale radio luisteren om op de hoogte te blijven van wat er in hun regio speelt. In Nederland hebben 3 miljoen mensen van 16 tot en met 75 jaar moeite met lezen\, schrijven en/of rekenen. DESCRIPTION:CC BY-SA 3.0\nEen geïntegreerde schakeling (van het Engelse integrated circuit\, IC) oftewel een monolithische geïntegreerde schakeling is een samenstel van verschillende elektronische componenten (zoals transistors) op een enkel stuk halfgeleidermateriaal\, bij grotere IC’s spreekt men wel van chip of microchip. \nIC’s zijn tegenwoordig in bijna alle elektrische toestellen van enige complexiteit (computers\, mobiele telefoons\, wasmachines\, auto’s) aanwezig. Ook is een microchip aanwezig in een betaalkaart\, de OV-chipkaart en in transponders die gebruikt worden om huisdieren te kunnen identificeren. De eerste werkende geïntegreerde schakeling werd op 12 september 1958 door Jack Kilby van Texas Instruments gepresenteerd. Vier maanden later deed Robert Noyce van Fairchild Semiconductor een soortgelijke uitvinding. Hoewel Noyce later was dan Kilby werd de patentenstrijd uiteindelijk in 1969 in het voordeel van Noyce beslist. De uitvinding van de geïntegreerde schakeling heeft een vergaande miniaturisatie van alle elektronische apparatuur mogelijk gemaakt.
