DESCRIPTION:  \n \nAn international team including Nobel Prize-winning physicist Professor Sir Roger Penrose has observed a long-predicted effect of gravity on a falling quantum object for the first time. \nThe result shows that a fundamental principle at the heart of Einstein’s theory of gravity remains consistent with the behaviour of matter in the quantum world. The study ‘Observation of the quantum phase of free fall and the consistency with the equivalence principle‘\, led by Ben-Gurion University of the Negev\, The University of Ulm and the University of Oxford\, has been published in Science Advances. For more than a century\, physicists have relied on two extraordinarily successful descriptions of nature. Quantum mechanics explains the strange behaviour of atoms and other tiny objects. Einstein’s theory of gravity explains how objects fall and how gravity shapes the Universe. Yet physicists still do not fully understand how the two fit together. Now\, an international team has performed an experiment that probes the point where they meet. In the study\, the researchers observed a distinctive change in the quantum properties of atoms as they fell under gravity. Crucially\, the effect they measured is the same one predicted when Einstein’s equivalence principle\, a cornerstone of his theory of gravity\, is applied to a quantum object. The equivalence principle states that for an observer in free fall\, gravity should locally disappear. Someone falling freely in a lift\, for example\, would experience weightlessness. Whilst this theory has survived extraordinarily precise tests involving ordinary matter\, it was unclear how this could be experimentally tested with quantum objects\, which can behave as waves and effectively travel along more than one path. At the heart of the experiment is a new apparatus the researchers call the Quantum Galileo Interferometer. DESCRIPTION:The Ig Nobel Prize (/ˌɪɡ noʊˈbɛl/) is a satirical prize awarded annually since 1991 to promote public engagement with scientific research\, its aim is to “honor achievements that first make people laugh\, and then make them think.” \nThe name of the award is a pun on the Nobel Prize\, which it parodies\, and on the word “ignoble”. Organized by the scientific humor magazine Annals of Improbable Research (AIR)\, the Ig Nobel Prizes are presented by Nobel laureates in a ceremony at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The winners also deliver public lectures. The Ig Nobel Prize monetary award is given in a solitary banknote for the amount of 10 trillion Zimbabwean dollars ($0.40 USD\, but the banknote is worth more as a collector’s item). The previous 35 ceremonies all took place in the USA\, in Cambridge/Boston. DESCRIPTION:In het eerste weekend van september 2026 vindt de wederom de Internationale Walvisteldag (Global Whale Count) plaats\, wat begon als een citizen science initiatief van Stichting Rugvin is in korte tijd uitgegroeid tot een wereldwijde actie. \nOp verschillende plekken op de wereld tellen burgers en onderzoekers walvisachtigen: van de kusten van de Atlantische en Stille Oceaan tot de Noordzee\, Waddenzee en Oosterschelde. Veel mensen weten niet dat er voor onze kust bruinvissen\, dolfijnen en zelfs grotere walvissen te zien zijn. Door samen te tellen krijgen we een beter beeld van de populaties én vergroten we het bewustzijn over de schoonheid én kwetsbaarheid van het zeeleven. In Nederland wordt geteld langs de hele Noordzeekust en in de Waddenzee. Iedereen kan meedoen\, ervaren of beginner\, zelfs vanaf een vakantieadres aan zee! DESCRIPTION:More than 760 000 students took the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) science\, mathematics and reading test in 2025 across 91 countries and economies\, representing around 33 million 15-year-olds across the world. \nThe highest performers in PISA 2025 across these three domains were the Chinese jurisdictions of Beijing\, Shanghai\, Jiangsu and Zhejiang\, and Singapore. Additionally\, Estonia\, Japan\, Korea\, Macao (China)\, Chinese Taipei and the United Kingdom were among the top 10 performing education systems. The overall performance of OECD countries declined\, with the lowest average levels of performance ever observed in science\, reading and mathematics. However\, there have been some improvements; for example\, among OECD countries\, Costa Rica\, the Slovak Republic\, Türkiye and the United Kingdom have seen increases in science scores since 2022. DESCRIPTION:Knippen en plakken in het DNA van menselijke embryo’s\, hoe denk jij hierover? \nIn 2012 is er een techniek ontwikkeld die het mogelijk maakt DNA eenvoudig te wijzigen. Nadat de Chinees He Jiankui in 2018 tegen alle regels in die techniek gebruikte om de eerste genetisch aangepaste baby’s geboren te laten worden is onderzocht hoe Nederlanders denken over het aanpassen van embryo-DNA. Het mag nog niet: knippen en plakken in het DNA van menselijke embryo’s. Het aanpassen van embryo-DNA heeft gevolgen voor ons allemaal en roept daarom veel vragen op. Bijvoorbeeld: is het oké om het DNA aan te passen om zo erfelijke ziektes uit het DNA te verwijderen? Hoe denk jij hierover? In de afgelopen jaren zijn we daarover in gesprek gegaan met diverse groepen mensen. Zij konden meepraten in dialogen om hun gedachten en gevoelens te delen. Uit de gevoerde gesprekken in een eerste Nederlands project (de DNA-dialoog van 2019 tot 2021) bleek\, dat de deelnemers over het algemeen niet principieel tegen het aanpassen van DNA van toekomstige kinderen waren. Maar dat betekent niet dat ze er automatisch voorstander van waren. Ze vonden het alleen goed als het wordt gebruikt voor het voorkomen van ernstige erfelijke aandoeningen\, zonder dat belangrijke (maatschappelijke) waarden onder druk komen te staan. Maar dan? Wat moesten politici daar dan mee? Hoe houd je rekening met maatschappelijke waarden? Is de ene waarde belangrijker dan de andere? Wat voor beleid konden politici daarop maken? \nHet project De DNA dialogen (van 2022-2027) brengt waarden van verschillende groepen uit de samenleving in beeld en komt met opties hoe deze naar beleid kunnen worden vertaald. De afgelopen jaren zijn daarover gesprekken gevoerd op allerlei plekken in Nederland en met veel verschillende mensen. Wat is geleerd\, wordt op 9 september 2026 graag gedeeld met iedereen die betrokken was\, en natuurlijk ook met jou. Het belooft een bijzondere dag te worden. Niet alleen de belangrijkste uitkomsten van De DNA dialogen worden gepresenteerd\, maar wordt ook getoond op welke creatieve manieren deze gesprekken zijn gevoerd. Je maakt bijvoorbeeld kennis met de Genmarkt\, de Atlas van De DNA dialogen en de stellingen in Polis. Natuurlijk kun je ook zelf in gesprek gaan met de onderzoekers achter deze bijzondere methodes én met allerlei andere mensen die hebben meegedaan. Een speciaal onderdeel van het mini-symposium is de promotieplechtigheid van onderzoeker Diewertje Houtman. DESCRIPTION:CC BY-SA 3.0\nEen geïntegreerde schakeling (van het Engelse integrated circuit\, IC) oftewel een monolithische geïntegreerde schakeling is een samenstel van verschillende elektronische componenten (zoals transistors) op een enkel stuk halfgeleidermateriaal\, bij grotere IC’s spreekt men wel van chip of microchip. \nIC’s zijn tegenwoordig in bijna alle elektrische toestellen van enige complexiteit (computers\, mobiele telefoons\, wasmachines\, auto’s) aanwezig. Ook is een microchip aanwezig in een betaalkaart\, de OV-chipkaart en in transponders die gebruikt worden om huisdieren te kunnen identificeren. De eerste werkende geïntegreerde schakeling werd op 12 september 1958 door Jack Kilby van Texas Instruments gepresenteerd. Vier maanden later deed Robert Noyce van Fairchild Semiconductor een soortgelijke uitvinding. Hoewel Noyce later was dan Kilby werd de patentenstrijd uiteindelijk in 1969 in het voordeel van Noyce beslist. De uitvinding van de geïntegreerde schakeling heeft een vergaande miniaturisatie van alle elektronische apparatuur mogelijk gemaakt. DESCRIPTION:Israel’s Systematic Dismantling of Palestinian Collective Life in the West Bank. \nSince the current Israeli government took office at the end of 2022\, and even more so since October 2023\, Israel has dramatically escalated its assault on all aspects of Palestinian life in the West Bank. At any moment\, Palestinians may be exposed to violence by soldiers or armed settler militias\, arrested and imprisoned\, subjected to abuse and humiliation\, and sometimes even killed. The Elimination Project draws on more than 2\,000 testimonies B’Tselem collected from Palestinians since October 2023 and over three decades of documenting the Israeli apartheid regime’s human rights abuses in the West Bank. The report looks at the current reality not as a collection of isolated incidents or specific harms\, but as part of a comprehensive mechanism of elimination that works to dismantle the conditions for continued Palestinian existence in the West Bank\, while deepening Jewish control and supremacy in an irreversible manner. DESCRIPTION:Five years after changing from opt-in to opt-out consent systems in England and the Netherlands\, the report ‘Five years after introduction of an opt-out consent system for organ donation; lessons learned from England and the Netherlands‘ shows the results of the examination of the impact on donor registrations\, consent rates\, donor numbers\, and reflect on lessons learned. \nOpt-out legislation was implemented in May 2020 in England and July 2020 in the Netherlands. In England\, 44% of the population is now registered; 40% recording an opt-in decision and 4% an opt-out decision. In the Netherlands\, mandated donor registration resulted in the entire adult population having their decision recorded: “Yes\, I want to be a donor” (34%)\, “No objection” (24%)\, or “No\, I don’t want to be a donor” (31%)\, while 11% leave the “Decision to next of kin”. Despite these structural changes\, the consent categories created by opt-out legislation (“deemed” consent in England and “No objection” in the Netherlands) remain challenging in practice\, with fewer than 50% of families agreeing to donation. In England\, the family consent rate declined from 69% to 57% between 2020 and 2025 and the donor numbers remain below pre-pandemic levels. In contrast\, the Netherlands experienced a modest increase in family consent rates and donor numbers compared to the opt-in consent system.
