DESCRIPTION:The IceCube Neutrino Observatory (or simply IceCube) is a neutrino observatory constructed at the Amundsen–Scott South Pole Station in Antarctica\, the project is a recognized CERN experiment (RE10). \nIts thousands of sensors are located under the Antarctic ice\, distributed over a cubic kilometre. Similar to its predecessor\, the Antarctic Muon And Neutrino Detector Array (AMANDA)\, IceCube consists of spherical optical sensors called Digital Optical Modules (DOMs)\, each with a photomultiplier tube (PMT) and a single-board data acquisition computer which sends digital data to the counting house on the surface above the array. IceCube was completed on 18 December 2010. DOMs are deployed on strings of 60 modules each at depths between 1\,450 and 2\,450 meters into holes melted in the ice using a hot water drill. DESCRIPTION:The Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission is a satellite altimeter jointly developed and operated by NASA and CNES\, the French space agency\, in partnership with the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) and UK Space Agency (UKSA). \nThe objectives of the mission are to make the first global survey of the Earth’s surface water\, to observe the fine details of the ocean surface topography\, and to measure how terrestrial surface water bodies change over time. While past satellite missions like the Jason series altimeters (TOPEX/Poseidon\, Jason-1\, Jason-2\, Jason-3) have provided variation in river and lake water surface elevations at select locations\, SWOT will provide the first truly global observations of changing water levels\, stream slopes\, and inundation extents in rivers\, lakes\, and floodplains. In the world’s oceans\, SWOT will observe ocean circulation at unprecedented scales of 15–25 km (9.3–15.5 mi)\, approximately an order of magnitude finer than current satellites. IYQ recognizes those who put effort into studying\, developing\, investigating\, using\, and teaching quantum science and technology\, while seeking to solicit and answer questions from anyone who wants to learn more about it. SUMMARY:Biomass : ESA's forest mission
DESCRIPTION:Biomass is an Earth observing satellite planned for launch by the European Space Agency (ESA) on 29 April 2025 from Kourou\, French Guiana on a Vega C launch vehicle\, the mission will provide the first comprehensive measurements of global forest biomass. \nIt is meant to last for five years\, monitoring at least eight growth cycles in the world’s forests. The Biomass satellite is part of ESA’s Living Planet Programme\, which consists of Earth observation missions. Its initial launch date was set to 2020\, but that has since been delayed to 2025. The entire cost of the mission was placed at around 400 million euros. The main scientific instrument aboard Biomass will be a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) operating at 435 MHz. In 2022\, Charman-Anderson announced that this would be the last year in which the organization that she founded\, Finding Ada\, would organize an annual flagship Ada Lovelace Day event in England. However\, the Royal Institution stepped in with funding and the organization Ada Lovelace Day has carried on. Since its inception\, Ada Lovelace Day has become international in scope\, with events organized by groups ranging from museums\, professional societies\, universities\, colleges and high schools. While Ada Lovelace Day is the second Tuesday of October\, events celebrating women in STEM typically span the period of October and November\, and include diverse activities ranging from in-person and virtual Wikipedia Editathons to panel discussions and film screenings. While this celebration of the often overlooked contributions of women in STEM was named for Ada Lovelace\, activities have expanded since 2009 to highlight the diverse contributions of women in STEM over time and different countries. Atomic clocks are already extraordinarily accurate\, yet researchers are now aiming higher with a nuclear clock that measures time using the motion of an atomic nucleus. The isotope thorium-229\, uniquely possessing a laser-accessible low-energy state\, lies at the centre of this effort. When embedded in transparent crystals and probed with vacuum-ultraviolet light\, this nuclear transition provides a reference less sensitive to environmental noise than electronic transitions. Current work focuses on engineering host materials\, controlling and quenching excitations\, and understanding how crystal defects shape nuclear behaviour; effectively building a nuclear clock. This breakthrough could enable innovations in navigation\, sensing\, and communications\, as well as unlock new insights in fields such as relativity\, dark matter\, and fundamental constants. Sinds de Russische inval in Oekraïne in 2022 en de wereldwijde toename van conflicten lijkt dit een logische keuze: we willen ons kunnen verdedigen en investeren in veiligheid. Maar is bewapening de enige weg naar veiligheid? Nog niet zo lang geleden volgde Europa een heel andere koers. Na het einde van de Koude Oorlog daalden de defensiebudgetten\, werden chemische wapens vernietigd en groeide het geloof in diplomatie\, internationale samenwerking en vreedzaam conflictbeheer. Inmiddels kiest Europa opnieuw voor bewapening: er komen nieuwe gevechtsvliegtuigen en drones\, de herinvoering van de dienstplicht staat ter discussie en jongeren melden zich aan als reservist. Is dit uitsluitend het gevolg van de dreiging vanuit Rusland? Hoe ziet de herbewapening van Europa eruit? En wat zijn argumenten voor pacifisme? \nIn dit Kenniscafé wordt de remilitarisering vanuit verschillende perspectieven onderzocht. Moderator Jelte Posthumus spreekt onder andere met hoogleraar Internationaal Recht Marcel Brus over de complexiteit van oorlogsrecht in hybride oorlogsvoering\, zoals cyberaanvallen\, desinformatie of proxy wars. Ook schuift universitair docent Militaire Geschiedenis Kim Bootsma aan\, die de geschiedenis van dienstplicht in Europa toelicht en onder meer bespreekt wat deze remilitarisering betekent voor de bevordering van gendergelijkheid in het leger.
