SUMMARY:IceCube Neutrino Observatory
DESCRIPTION:The IceCube Neutrino Observatory (or simply IceCube) is a neutrino observatory constructed at the Amundsen–Scott South Pole Station in Antarctica\, the project is a recognized CERN experiment (RE10). \nIts thousands of sensors are located under the Antarctic ice\, distributed over a cubic kilometre. Similar to its predecessor\, the Antarctic Muon And Neutrino Detector Array (AMANDA)\, IceCube consists of spherical optical sensors called Digital Optical Modules (DOMs)\, each with a photomultiplier tube (PMT) and a single-board data acquisition computer which sends digital data to the counting house on the surface above the array. IceCube was completed on 18 December 2010. DOMs are deployed on strings of 60 modules each at depths between 1\,450 and 2\,450 meters into holes melted in the ice using a hot water drill. DESCRIPTION:The Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission is a satellite altimeter jointly developed and operated by NASA and CNES\, the French space agency\, in partnership with the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) and UK Space Agency (UKSA). \nThe objectives of the mission are to make the first global survey of the Earth’s surface water\, to observe the fine details of the ocean surface topography\, and to measure how terrestrial surface water bodies change over time. While past satellite missions like the Jason series altimeters (TOPEX/Poseidon\, Jason-1\, Jason-2\, Jason-3) have provided variation in river and lake water surface elevations at select locations\, SWOT will provide the first truly global observations of changing water levels\, stream slopes\, and inundation extents in rivers\, lakes\, and floodplains. In the world’s oceans\, SWOT will observe ocean circulation at unprecedented scales of 15–25 km (9.3–15.5 mi)\, approximately an order of magnitude finer than current satellites. Anyone\, anywhere can participate in IYQ by helping others to learn more about quantum on this centennial occasion or simply taking the time to learn more about it themselves. No One Owns Quantum Science No individual\, society\, country\, institution\, or discipline can claim ownership of the past or future of quantum science; it is knowledge that should be free to all. IYQ recognizes those who put effort into studying\, developing\, investigating\, using\, and teaching quantum science and technology\, while seeking to solicit and answer questions from anyone who wants to learn more about it. Those who have insights into the beauty\, power\, and importance of quantum science and technology should use IYQ as a moment to share these insights with people who are less familiar with quantum. SUMMARY:Biomass : ESA's forest mission
DESCRIPTION:Biomass is an Earth observing satellite planned for launch by the European Space Agency (ESA) on 29 April 2025 from Kourou\, French Guiana on a Vega C launch vehicle\, the mission will provide the first comprehensive measurements of global forest biomass. \nIt is meant to last for five years\, monitoring at least eight growth cycles in the world’s forests. The Biomass satellite is part of ESA’s Living Planet Programme\, which consists of Earth observation missions. Its initial launch date was set to 2020\, but that has since been delayed to 2025. The entire cost of the mission was placed at around 400 million euros. The main scientific instrument aboard Biomass will be a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) operating at 435 MHz. De datum is sinds 1962 verschillende keren veranderd\, waardoor de dag in verschillende landen op verschillende datums gevierd wordt. In onder andere België\, Duitsland\, Nederland en het Verenigd Koninkrijk valt de dag op 5 oktober. Op deze dag wordt de waardering van leerkrachten benadrukt en is er aandacht voor het onderwijs als belangrijke factor in de maatschappij. Dit kan soms gepaard gaan met vieringen om hen te eren voor hun speciale bijdrage in een specifiek domein\, of voor de gemeenschap in het algemeen. Er vinden verschillende evenementen plaats om de dag te markeren\, van lezingen en spreekbeurten tot theater. Het is voor veel scholen ook het moment om het onderwijzend personeel een bedankje te geven en hun leraren en leraressen in het zonnetje te zetten. Van scheurkalender en boekenbon tot een dagje uit worden er geschenken gegeven aan leraren en leraressen. In 2022\, Charman-Anderson announced that this would be the last year in which the organization that she founded\, Finding Ada\, would organize an annual flagship Ada Lovelace Day event in England. However\, the Royal Institution stepped in with funding and the organization Ada Lovelace Day has carried on. Since its inception\, Ada Lovelace Day has become international in scope\, with events organized by groups ranging from museums\, professional societies\, universities\, colleges and high schools. While Ada Lovelace Day is the second Tuesday of October\, events celebrating women in STEM typically span the period of October and November\, and include diverse activities ranging from in-person and virtual Wikipedia Editathons to panel discussions and film screenings. While this celebration of the often overlooked contributions of women in STEM was named for Ada Lovelace\, activities have expanded since 2009 to highlight the diverse contributions of women in STEM over time and different countries. Daarbij komen thema’s aan bod die niet alleen het hoger onderwijs en de wetenschap raken\, maar ook de samenleving en economie als geheel. Zo wordt er gesproken over de manier waarop onderzoeksfinanciering is ingericht en welke keuzes daarbij gemaakt moeten worden. DESCRIPTION:On 24 October 2025\, the fifth edition of the Netherlands Open Science Festival will take place at the University of Groningen\, this Dutch festival is for the entire open science community and beyond. \nProfessional research support staff and researchers across all disciplines are invited. The day will be full of interactive sessions\, an information market\, and plenty of opportunities to mingle and meet. Open Science or Open Scholarship stands for the transition to a new\, more open and participatory way of conducting\, publishing and evaluating scholarly research. Central to this concept is the goal of increasing cooperation and transparency in all research stages. This is achieved\, among other ways\, by sharing research data\, publications\, software\, tools and results as early and open as possible. According to the UNESCO recommendation on Open Science\, Open Science is aiming to make scientific knowledge openly available\, accessible and reusable for everyone\, to increase scientific collaborations and sharing of information for the benefits of science and society. Using open methods can lead to more robust scientific results\, more efficient research and (faster) access to scientific results for everyone. \nLinks:\nOpen Science Festival

SUMMARY:Hendrik de Waard Lecture | Redefining Time Through Nuclear Physics
DESCRIPTION:In this Hendrik de Waard lecture\, experimental physicist Kjeld Beeks shows how cutting-edge nuclear research is redefining the present and shaping the future\, while reflecting on its societal and ethical implications. \nFrom GPS to quantum experiments\, precise timekeeping drives modern life. Atomic clocks are already extraordinarily accurate\, yet researchers are now aiming higher with a nuclear clock that measures time using the motion of an atomic nucleus. The isotope thorium-229\, uniquely possessing a laser-accessible low-energy state\, lies at the centre of this effort. When embedded in transparent crystals and probed with vacuum-ultraviolet light\, this nuclear transition provides a reference less sensitive to environmental noise than electronic transitions. Current work focuses on engineering host materials\, controlling and quenching excitations\, and understanding how crystal defects shape nuclear behaviour; effectively building a nuclear clock. This breakthrough could enable innovations in navigation\, sensing\, and communications\, as well as unlock new insights in fields such as relativity\, dark matter\, and fundamental constants.
