DESCRIPTION:The IceCube Neutrino Observatory (or simply IceCube) is a neutrino observatory constructed at the Amundsen–Scott South Pole Station in Antarctica\, the project is a recognized CERN experiment (RE10). \nIts thousands of sensors are located under the Antarctic ice\, distributed over a cubic kilometre. Similar to its predecessor\, the Antarctic Muon And Neutrino Detector Array (AMANDA)\, IceCube consists of spherical optical sensors called Digital Optical Modules (DOMs)\, each with a photomultiplier tube (PMT) and a single-board data acquisition computer which sends digital data to the counting house on the surface above the array. IceCube was completed on 18 December 2010. DOMs are deployed on strings of 60 modules each at depths between 1\,450 and 2\,450 meters into holes melted in the ice using a hot water drill. DESCRIPTION:The Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission is a satellite altimeter jointly developed and operated by NASA and CNES\, the French space agency\, in partnership with the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) and UK Space Agency (UKSA). \nThe objectives of the mission are to make the first global survey of the Earth’s surface water\, to observe the fine details of the ocean surface topography\, and to measure how terrestrial surface water bodies change over time. While past satellite missions like the Jason series altimeters (TOPEX/Poseidon\, Jason-1\, Jason-2\, Jason-3) have provided variation in river and lake water surface elevations at select locations\, SWOT will provide the first truly global observations of changing water levels\, stream slopes\, and inundation extents in rivers\, lakes\, and floodplains. In the world’s oceans\, SWOT will observe ocean circulation at unprecedented scales of 15–25 km (9.3–15.5 mi)\, approximately an order of magnitude finer than current satellites. DESCRIPTION:De campagne ‘Water op de kaart’ van het Nederlands Instituut voor Ecologie (NIOO-KNAW) en de stichting Natuur & Milieu moet een beeld gaan geven van de kwaliteit van water rond een riooloverstort. \nZo’n 40 burgerwetenschappers verspreid over Nederland gaan in hun eigen buurt monsters nemen van de zogenaamde kleine oppervlaktewateren: de sloten of vijvers om de hoek. Dat water blijkt namelijk van niet zo’n goeie kwaliteit. Bij hevige plensbuien\, die in toenemende mate voorkomen\, komt het riool vol met water te zitten en stroomt het over naar omliggende sloten en plassen. Daar zit het probleem. Door die overstort komen stoffen uit het riool als medicijnresten en poep en plas in het oppervlaktewater terecht. Anyone\, anywhere can participate in IYQ by helping others to learn more about quantum on this centennial occasion or simply taking the time to learn more about it themselves. No One Owns Quantum Science No individual\, society\, country\, institution\, or discipline can claim ownership of the past or future of quantum science; it is knowledge that should be free to all. IYQ recognizes those who put effort into studying\, developing\, investigating\, using\, and teaching quantum science and technology\, while seeking to solicit and answer questions from anyone who wants to learn more about it. Those who have insights into the beauty\, power\, and importance of quantum science and technology should use IYQ as a moment to share these insights with people who are less familiar with quantum. DESCRIPTION:RAVON organiseert vanaf 28 februari tot en met 28 maart 2025 de jaarlijkse terugkerende landelijke kikkerdriltelling\, er wordt in een aantal weken tellen hoeveel eiklompen van de bruine kikker er in je tuinvijver zijn afgezet. \nDeze telling is gericht op de bruine kikker. Dit is namelijk een van de eerste amfibieën die zich in de lente gaat voortplanten. Andere kikkers leggen hun eitjes later in het voorjaar\, op de heikikker na. Omdat de heikikker maar bij hoge uitzondering voor komt in tuinen maken we geen onderscheid tussen de eiklompen van de bruine kikker en die van de heikikker. De eiklompen zijn goed zichtbaar aan het wateroppervlakte en zijn grote klompen. De eiklompen zijn per stuk te tellen. Elk kikkerpaartje legt namelijk één eikomp. Door het aantal klompen met twee te vermenigvuldigen\, weten we dus exact hoeveel kikkers er in onze tuinen leven. Tegelijkertijd met de bruine kikker legt de gewone pad haar eitjes; in de vorm van snoeren. Deze snoeren liggen echter echt onderwater\, waardoor ze moeilijker te tellen zijn. In 2017\, the conference lasted for 10 days with the interactive track lasting for five days\, music for seven days\, and film for nine days. SXSW is run by the company SXSW\, LLC\, which organizes conferences\, trade shows\, festivals\, and other events. In addition to SXSW\, the company runs the conference SXSW EDU and the SXSW Sydney festival (from 2023\, in Sydney\, Australia) and co-runs North by Northeast in Toronto. It has previously run or co-run the events North by Northwest (1995–2001)\, West by Southwest (2006–2010)\, SXSW Eco (2011–2016)\, SXSW V2V (2013–2015)\, and the me Convention (2017–2019). In addition\, a large number of other events\, past and present\, sometimes collectively referred to as “four-letter festivals”\, have been inspired by SXSW. Organisers are people from all walks of life: teachers\, community group leaders\, researchers\, parents\, students\, professionals and many more. The continuing success of the Week depends entirely on the incredible efforts of our event organisers and the enthusiasm of participants. The idea behind the programme is to raise awareness\, spark enthusiasm and celebrate science\, engineering\, technology and maths with people of all ages and from all walks of life. Authorities raised the alert to the highest level\, and Jetstar canceled some flights to Bali. The eruption followed smaller ones since 13 March. One person was injured during the evacuations\, although the details reported were unclear. Bali airport remained open\, but seven international flights were canceled. DESCRIPTION:Several years ago\, a cosmic particle detector in Antarctica observed a series of unusual radio signals\, according to an international research group that includes scientists from Penn State. \nThe strange radio pulses were detected between 2016 and 2018 by NASA’s Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA)\, a range of instruments flown on balloons high above Antarctica that are designed to detect radio waves from cosmic rays hitting the atmosphere\, and a new study provides additional context to the nearly decade-old results. The goal of the ANITA experiment was to gain insight into distant cosmic events by analyzing signals that reach the Earth. Rather than reflecting off the ice\, the signals — a form of radio waves — appeared to be coming from below the horizon\, an orientation that could not be explained by the current understanding of particle physics and may have hinted at new types of particles or interactions previously unknown to science\, the team said at the time. A new study using the Pierre Auger Observatory in Argentina analyzed 15 years of cosmic data to try to make sense of those signals. DESCRIPTION:On 28 March 2025 at 12:50:54 MMT (06:20:54 UTC)\, the Mw 7.7 2025 Myanmar earthquake struck the Sagaing Region of Myanmar\, with an epicenter close to Mandalay\, the country’s second-largest city\, the strike-slip faulting shock achieved a maximum Modified Mercalli intensity of IX (Violent). \nIt was the most powerful earthquake to strike Myanmar since 1912. The earthquake caused extensive damage in Myanmar and significant damage in neighboring Thailand. DESCRIPTION:SciStarter established an annual Citizen Science Month in April to celebrate and bring greater awareness to the valuable contributions of the public to scientific research and data collection endeavors. \nCitizen science (similar to community science\, crowd science\, crowd-sourced science\, civic science\, participatory monitoring\, or volunteer monitoring) is research conducted with participation from the general public\, or amateur/nonprofessional researchers or participants for science\, social science and many other disciplines. There are variations in the exact definition of citizen science\, with different individuals and organizations having their own specific interpretations of what citizen science encompasses. Citizen science is used in a wide range of areas of study including ecology\, biology and conservation\, health and medical research\, astronomy\, media and communications and information science. There are different applications and functions of citizen science in research projects. Citizen science can be used as a methodology where public volunteers help in collecting and classifying data\, improving the scientific community’s capacity. Citizen science can also involve more direct involvement from the public\, with communities initiating projects researching environment and health hazards in their own communities. Participation in citizen science projects also educates the public about the scientific process and increases awareness about different topics. Some schools have students participate in citizen science projects for this purpose as a part of the teaching curriculums. \nLinks:\nCitizen Science Month \nCitizen Science Month – USGS \nApril is Citizen Science Month \nKennis Burgerwetenschap

DESCRIPTION:April is de Maand van de Filosofie\, jaarlijks worden tijdens deze maand door heel België en Nederland filosofische nachten\, programma’s\, lezingen\, debatten en festivals georganiseerd. \nElk jaar verschijnt er een nieuw filosofisch essay\, wordt de Socratesbeker uitgereikt aan het beste filosofieboek van het jaar en eens in de twee jaar wordt een nieuwe Denker des Vaderlands uitgeroepen. De filosofie of wijsbegeerte is de oudste theoretische discipline die het verlangen en het streven uitdrukt naar kennis en wijsheid. Zij kwam voor het eerst echt op in de 6e eeuw voor de Gregoriaanse jaartelling. Een beoefenaar van de filosofie wordt een filosoof of wijsgeer genoemd. In het dagelijks spraakgebruik wordt de term filosofie gebruikt om elke vorm van wijsheid of levensbeschouwing aan te duiden (zoals in “iemands filosofie”) of iemands uitgangspunten (zoals in “het sluit niet aan op de filosofie achter dit plan”). SUMMARY:Onderzoek naar het voedingsgedrag van wolven (Canis lupus) in Nederland in 2023 - publicatie
DESCRIPTION:Wolven in Nederland eten vooral wilde hoefdieren zoals reeën\, wilde zwijnen en edelherten maar ook natuurgrazers in wildarme gebieden. \nOnder meer in Drenthe\, voeden wolven zich ook met in het wild levende runderen die worden ingezet voor natuurbeheer. Dat blijkt uit een onderzoek naar de ontlasting van de wolven in ons land. Het onderzoek naar het voedingspatroon van de wolven in Nederland\, uitgevoerd door het Centrum voor Milieuwetenschappen van de Universiteit Leiden\, Stichting Leo\, Universiteit Antwerpen en de Zoogdiervereniging\, bracht het voedingspatroon van wolven in 2023 gedetailleerd in kaart. Uit de resultaten blijkt dat op de Veluwe\, wilde zwijnen (aanwezig in 62% van de onderzochte uitwerpselen)\, reeën (56%) en edelherten (32%) de voornaamste prooidieren zijn. In Drenthe\, waar vrijwel alleen reeën in het wild voorkomen\, voeden wolven zich naast reeën (aangetoond in 63% van de uitwerpselen) ook met natuurrunderen (43%) die ingezet worden voor natuurbeheer\, en schapen (10%). Het onderzoek is een langdurige studie die in ieder geval loopt tot en met 2025. De wetenschappelijke bevindingen kunnen bijdragen aan het maatschappelijk debat\, maar ook aan de onderbouwing van een beter beleid voor wolven in Nederland. Er is nu voor het eerst objectieve informatie over het wolvendieet in Nederland. SUMMARY:The MICrONS Project : anatomical images of individual cells in mouse visual cortex - publications
DESCRIPTION:The MICrONS Project published package of papers about an unprecedented dataset of high resolution anatomical images of individual cells in mouse visual cortex\, mapped on to their responses. \nThis integrated view of function and structure lays a foundation for discovering the computational bases of cortical circuits. A cubic millimetre might not sound like much — roughly the size of a grain of sand — but to neuroscientists\, it is enormous. One cubic millimetre of a mammalian brain contains tens of thousands of neurons with hundreds of millions of connections\, or synapses\, between them. For most of the history of neuroscience\, tracing the detailed connectivity (or connectomics) and measuring activity of neurons at such a large scale was unthinkable. Instead\, neuroscientists worked at more manageable scales — even single pairs of connected cells can provide important information\, especially when accrued over hundreds of labs doing similar experiments. Nevertheless\, the goal of studying millimetre-scale volumes of brain in such detail started to come closer after a period of intense focus on new neuroscience technologies in the 1990s and 2000s. This period led to tools to label\, trace and image the activity of neurons in increasingly large populations. However\, the fundamental problem of scale remained. A complete reconstruction of a cubic millimetre of neurons requires roughly a petabyte of data. Tracing the intricate branches of the neurons is far too time consuming to do by hand\, so improved tools for automation were needed. A parallel revolution in computing — increased computing power and advances in machine learning and artificial intelligence — suddenly made those challenges tractable. This brings us to today’s announcement of the MICrONS project. The team made and designed tools to allow dense neural reconstruction at scale. The resulting data set includes 200\,000 cells and 523 million connections in the primary visual cortex and surrounding areas of a mouse. A unique contribution of the MICrONS project is that it also includes in vivo functional data from around 75\,000 of the neurons. Even landmark connectomics studies\, such as FlyWire\, include only the anatomical data. The inclusion of functional data means that we can directly relate connectivity to function and decipher the elusive algorithms of the cortex. \nLinks:\nThe MICrONS Project – Nature
