DESCRIPTION:The IceCube Neutrino Observatory (or simply IceCube) is a neutrino observatory constructed at the Amundsen–Scott South Pole Station in Antarctica\, the project is a recognized CERN experiment (RE10). \nIts thousands of sensors are located under the Antarctic ice\, distributed over a cubic kilometre. Similar to its predecessor\, the Antarctic Muon And Neutrino Detector Array (AMANDA)\, IceCube consists of spherical optical sensors called Digital Optical Modules (DOMs)\, each with a photomultiplier tube (PMT) and a single-board data acquisition computer which sends digital data to the counting house on the surface above the array. IceCube was completed on 18 December 2010. DOMs are deployed on strings of 60 modules each at depths between 1\,450 and 2\,450 meters into holes melted in the ice using a hot water drill. SUMMARY:Biomass : ESA's forest mission
DESCRIPTION:Biomass is an Earth observing satellite planned for launch by the European Space Agency (ESA) on 29 April 2025 from Kourou\, French Guiana on a Vega C launch vehicle\, the mission will provide the first comprehensive measurements of global forest biomass. \nIt is meant to last for five years\, monitoring at least eight growth cycles in the world’s forests. The Biomass satellite is part of ESA’s Living Planet Programme\, which consists of Earth observation missions. Its initial launch date was set to 2020\, but that has since been delayed to 2025. The entire cost of the mission was placed at around 400 million euros. The main scientific instrument aboard Biomass will be a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) operating at 435 MHz. These investments complement and enrich the essential work that happens in schools and with teachers. The 2026 International Day for Digital Learning is an invitation to showcase where and how countries\, provinces\, and school districts are building – and using – digital commons to strengthen public education and improve its outcomes. In line with the 2026 theme\, UNESCO\, together with UNICEF and the  International Telecommunication Union (ITU)\, will launch the Charter for Public Digital Learning Platforms on the International Day. DESCRIPTION:The strong and continuous increase of AI-based services leads to the steady proliferation of AI data centres worldwide with the unavoidable escalation of their power consumption\, it is unknown how this energy demand for computational purposes will impact the surrounding environment\, scientists report in the paper ‘The data heat island effect: quantifying the impact of AI data centers in a warming world‘. \nData centres built to power AIs produce so much heat that they can raise the surface temperature of the land around them by several degrees – creating so-called data centre heat islands that may already be affecting up to 340 million people. The number of data centres built around the world is forecast to rise enormously\, data centre capacity will double between 2025 and 2030 – with AI expected to account for half that demand. Andrea Marinoni at the University of Cambridge\, UK\, and his colleagues saw that the amount of energy needed to run a data centre had been steadily increasing of late and was likely to “explode” in the coming years\, so wanted to quantify the impact. The researchers took satellite measurements of land surface temperatures over the past 20 years and cross-referenced them against the geographical coordinates of more than 8400 AI data centres. Recognising that surface temperature could be affected by other factors\, the researchers chose to focus their investigation on data centres located away from densely populated areas. They discovered that land surface temperatures increased by an average of 2°C in the months after an AI data centre started operations. In the most extreme cases\, the increase in temperature was 9.1°C. The effect wasn’t limited to the immediate surroundings of the data centres: the team found increased temperatures up to 10 kilometres away. Seven kilometres away\, there was only a 30 per cent reduction in the intensity. Using population data\, the researchers estimate that more than 340 million people live within 10 kilometres of data centres\, so live in a place that is warmer than it would be if the data centre hadn’t been built there. Marinoni says that areas including the Bajío region in Mexico and the Aragon province in Spain saw a 2°C temperature increase in the 20 years between 2004 and 2024 that couldn’t otherwise be explained. Chris Preist at the University of Bristol\, UK\, says the results may be more nuanced than they first appear\, suggesting that the building being heated by sunlight may be part of the effect. Either way\, the data centre is still increasing the ground temperature\, says Marinoni. \nLinks:\nAI data centres can warm surrounding areas by up to 9.1°C

The team managed to accumulate a cloud of 92 antiprotons in an innovative portable cryogenic Penning trap\, then disconnect it from the experimental facility\, load it onto a truck and continue experiment operation after transport. This is a remarkable achievement\, given that antimatter is very difficult to preserve\, as it annihilates upon contact with matter. This world premiere is a test\, the ultimate aim being to transport antiprotons to other European laboratories\, such as Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf (HHU)\, where very-high-precision measurements of the antiproton properties could be performed. Antimatter is a naturally occurring class of particles that is almost identical to ordinary matter except that the electric charge and magnetic moment are reversed. According to the laws of physics\, the Big Bang should have produced equal amounts of matter and antimatter. These equal-but-opposite particles would have quickly annihilated each other\, leaving an empty Universe. However\, our Universe contains predominantly matter\, and this imbalance has baffled scientists for decades. Het thema van 2026 is ‘Ken onszelve’. Elk jaar verschijnt er een nieuw filosofisch essay\, wordt de Socratesbeker uitgereikt aan het beste filosofieboek van het jaar en eens in de twee jaar wordt een nieuwe Denker des Vaderlands uitgeroepen. De filosofie of wijsbegeerte is de oudste theoretische discipline die het verlangen en het streven uitdrukt naar kennis en wijsheid. Zij kwam voor het eerst echt op in de 6e eeuw voor de Gregoriaanse jaartelling. Een beoefenaar van de filosofie wordt een filosoof of wijsgeer genoemd. In het dagelijks spraakgebruik wordt de term filosofie gebruikt om elke vorm van wijsheid of levensbeschouwing aan te duiden (zoals in “iemands filosofie”) of iemands uitgangspunten (zoals in “het sluit niet aan op de filosofie achter dit plan”). DESCRIPTION:In het rapport ‘Inzicht in openbare kwaliteitsinformatie in de medischspecialistische zorg : Nulmeting van de huidige staat van transparantie‘ staat een nulmeting Zorginstituut Nederland en Patiëntenfederatie Nederland over de transparantie van kwaliteitsinformatie in de medisch-specialistische zorg. \nUit dit onderzoek blijkt dat er weinig informatie over de kwaliteit van zorg openbaar is voor patiënten. En dat de hoeveelheid openbare kwaliteitsinformatie de afgelopen jaren nauwelijks toeneemt. In het rapport staan de resultaten. Deze meting is uitgevoerd om een stand van zaken te krijgen over de huidige mate van transparantie van kwaliteitsinformatie in de medisch-specialistische zorg in Nederland. Deze meting volgt uit de afspraken van het Aanvullend Zorg- en Welzijnsakkoord (AZWA). Hierin staan afspraken die partijen maken om meer informatie over kwaliteit van zorg transparant te maken. Door de jaren heen zijn meerdere afspraken gemaakt om kwaliteitsinformatie voor patiënten transparant te maken\, maar deze afspraken werden ook uitgesteld. Dat roept vragen op: wat is nu eigenlijk de stand van zaken? Zijn de afspraken tussen partijen in het veld en de overheid nagekomen?
