DESCRIPTION:The IceCube Neutrino Observatory (or simply IceCube) is a neutrino observatory constructed at the Amundsen–Scott South Pole Station in Antarctica\, the project is a recognized CERN experiment (RE10). \nIts thousands of sensors are located under the Antarctic ice\, distributed over a cubic kilometre. Similar to its predecessor\, the Antarctic Muon And Neutrino Detector Array (AMANDA)\, IceCube consists of spherical optical sensors called Digital Optical Modules (DOMs)\, each with a photomultiplier tube (PMT) and a single-board data acquisition computer which sends digital data to the counting house on the surface above the array. IceCube was completed on 18 December 2010. DOMs are deployed on strings of 60 modules each at depths between 1\,450 and 2\,450 meters into holes melted in the ice using a hot water drill. DESCRIPTION:The Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission is a satellite altimeter jointly developed and operated by NASA and CNES\, the French space agency\, in partnership with the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) and UK Space Agency (UKSA). \nThe objectives of the mission are to make the first global survey of the Earth’s surface water\, to observe the fine details of the ocean surface topography\, and to measure how terrestrial surface water bodies change over time. While past satellite missions like the Jason series altimeters (TOPEX/Poseidon\, Jason-1\, Jason-2\, Jason-3) have provided variation in river and lake water surface elevations at select locations\, SWOT will provide the first truly global observations of changing water levels\, stream slopes\, and inundation extents in rivers\, lakes\, and floodplains. In the world’s oceans\, SWOT will observe ocean circulation at unprecedented scales of 15–25 km (9.3–15.5 mi)\, approximately an order of magnitude finer than current satellites. Anyone\, anywhere can participate in IYQ by helping others to learn more about quantum on this centennial occasion or simply taking the time to learn more about it themselves. No One Owns Quantum Science No individual\, society\, country\, institution\, or discipline can claim ownership of the past or future of quantum science; it is knowledge that should be free to all. IYQ recognizes those who put effort into studying\, developing\, investigating\, using\, and teaching quantum science and technology\, while seeking to solicit and answer questions from anyone who wants to learn more about it. Those who have insights into the beauty\, power\, and importance of quantum science and technology should use IYQ as a moment to share these insights with people who are less familiar with quantum. IYQ asks everyone to make an effort to reach out to people with different cultural backgrounds and aesthetic sensibilities. \nIf you’re inclined to present or seek out a unified story\, make note of where others dissent. SUMMARY:Biomass : ESA's forest mission
DESCRIPTION:Biomass is an Earth observing satellite planned for launch by the European Space Agency (ESA) on 29 April 2025 from Kourou\, French Guiana on a Vega C launch vehicle\, the mission will provide the first comprehensive measurements of global forest biomass. \nIt is meant to last for five years\, monitoring at least eight growth cycles in the world’s forests. The Biomass satellite is part of ESA’s Living Planet Programme\, which consists of Earth observation missions. Its initial launch date was set to 2020\, but that has since been delayed to 2025. The entire cost of the mission was placed at around 400 million euros. The main scientific instrument aboard Biomass will be a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) operating at 435 MHz. DESCRIPTION:Van 8 tot en met 15 september 2025 is de Week van lezen en schrijven\, dan wordt extra aandacht gevraagd voor beperkte basisvaardigheden. \nDat gebeurt met het Nederlandse publiek\, taalnetwerken\, gemeenten en bedrijven. Vele partners\, bedrijven\, gemeenten en organisaties organiseren activiteiten tijdens de Week van lezen en schrijven. Van theatervoorstellingen tot open inloopdagen. En van puzzeltochten tot het uitdelen van letterkoekjes. En ook lokale radiostations zetten zich ervoor in. Dit jaar doen veel lokale radiostations mee met de Week van lezen en schrijven. Ervaringsdeskundigen van Stichting ABC en adviseurs van Stichting Lezen en Schrijven worden in het hele land bevraagd door plaatselijke programmamakers. We zijn blij met die betrokkenheid\, want uit onderzoek blijkt dat mensen die moeite hebben met lezen graag naar lokale radio luisteren om op de hoogte te blijven van wat er in hun regio speelt. In Nederland hebben 3 miljoen mensen van 16 tot en met 75 jaar moeite met lezen\, schrijven en/of rekenen. Ook is een microchip aanwezig in een betaalkaart\, de OV-chipkaart en in transponders die gebruikt worden om huisdieren te kunnen identificeren. De eerste werkende geïntegreerde schakeling werd op 12 september 1958 door Jack Kilby van Texas Instruments gepresenteerd. Vier maanden later deed Robert Noyce van Fairchild Semiconductor een soortgelijke uitvinding. Hoewel Noyce later was dan Kilby werd de patentenstrijd uiteindelijk in 1969 in het voordeel van Noyce beslist. De uitvinding van de geïntegreerde schakeling heeft een vergaande miniaturisatie van alle elektronische apparatuur mogelijk gemaakt. Nieuwe\, torenhoge importtarieven zouden vanaf dat moment gelden voor staal\, halfgeleiders\, elektrische auto’s en een reeks consumentengoederen uit China en Europa. “From now on\,” riep hij\, “we build\, we buy\, we win at home.” De reacties waren onmiddellijk en wereldwijd voelbaar. In Beijing sprak de regering van een “economische oorlogsverklaring.” Europese leiders riepen spoedoverleggen bijeen om een gezamenlijk antwoord te formuleren\, terwijl beursvloeren van Frankfurt tot Seoul rood kleurden. De afgelopen maanden is duidelijk geworden dat de globalisering die onze wereld decennialang heeft vormgegeven\, scheuren vertoont. Trump heeft de tarieven opnieuw fors verhoogd: staal\, halfgeleiders\, elektrische auto’s – niets ontsnapt aan zijn handelsoorlog. DESCRIPTION:De ozonlaag is een dun laagje gas dat ligt tussen de 15 en 50 kilometer hoogte en als een ring om onze aarde zit met als belangrijkste eigenschap; het beschermt ons tegen de schadelijke straling (ultraviolette straling) die afkomstig is van de zon. \nZonder de ozonlaag is leven op aarde niet mogelijk. Door vervuiling wordt de ozonlaag steeds dunner. Hierdoor lopen mensen meer kans op huidkanker en staar. Om gezamenlijk te proberen het ozongat niet groter te laten worden werd op 22 maart 1985 het Verdrag van Wenen aangenomen dat door 28 landen ondertekend. Op 16 september 1987 heeft dit geleid tot het opstellen van het Montrealprotocol (Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer). Het is geratificeerd door elke lidstaat van de Verenigde Naties (197); de Europese Unie\, alle 193 leden van de Verenigde Naties\, Vaticaanstad\, Cookeilanden en Niue. Het Montrealprotocol laat zien dat mondiaal afspraken maken over het milieubeleid duidelijk zin heeft. We moeten nog wel een tijd wachten voordat de ozonlaag helemaal hersteld is maar vermoedelijk zal tegen 2050 de ozonlaag hersteld zijn tot het niveau van 1960. Plak er nog een 20 tot 30 jaar aan vast en dan moet de ozonlaag toch praktisch hersteld zijn. DESCRIPTION:In dit Kenniscafé worden de ‘eeuwige chemicaliën’\, zoals PFAS\, en de invloed van synthetische stoffen op onze gezondheid en het ecosysteem onderzocht. \nWe leven in een wereld vol stoffen die door de mens zijn ontwikkeld\, maar die van oorsprong niet in de natuur voorkomen: denk aan plastics\, geneesmiddelen en industriële chemicaliën. Het zijn materialen die ons leven ingrijpend hebben veranderd\, maar die vaak zijn geïntroduceerd zonder dat goed bekend was hoe ze zich in het milieu zouden gedragen. Op dit moment liggen PFAS onder een vergrootglas: een groep moeilijk afbreekbare stoffen die voor allerlei doeleinden worden gebruikt. Ze zijn bijvoorbeeld ontworpen om regenkleding waterafstotend te maken en dienen als anti-aanbaklaag in pannen. Recent waarschuwde het RIVM nog voor het eten van eieren van hobbykippen vanwege te hoge PFAS-gehaltes\, die schadelijk kunnen zijn voor de gezondheid. Wat weten we van deze stoffen? Waarom zijn ze zo lastig uit onze omgeving te weren? En wat zegt dit over de manier waarop we in de toekomst met nieuwe chemische verbindingen moeten omgaan? DESCRIPTION:Tijdens NL Space Week opent de ruimtevaartsector in Nederland haar deuren\, zodat jong en oud de mogelijkheid heeft de ruimte te ontdekken\, het is een week vol unieke activiteiten op exclusieve ruimtevaartlocaties. \nZo zijn er de bekende ESA ESTEC open dagen en Space Expo op de NL Space Campus in Noordwijk\, maar ook de open dagen van SRON en de Oude Sterrewacht in Leiden\, en daarnaast ruim 100 internationale astronauten die tijdens het ASE congres een bezoek aan Nederland brengen. Met een uiteenlopende programmering valt er voor iedereen wat moois te halen. SUMMARY:#WorldTeachersDay Dag van de Leraar 2025
DESCRIPTION:De Dag van de Leraar\, ook Dag van de Leerkracht(en) genoemd\, is een jaarlijks terugkerende  speciale dag om waardering te tonen voor onderwijzers. \nDe dag wordt gevierd in zo’n 88 landen wereldwijd. De datum is sinds 1962 verschillende keren veranderd\, waardoor de dag in verschillende landen op verschillende datums gevierd wordt. In onder andere België\, Duitsland\, Nederland en het Verenigd Koninkrijk valt de dag op 5 oktober. Op deze dag wordt de waardering van leerkrachten benadrukt en is er aandacht voor het onderwijs als belangrijke factor in de maatschappij. Dit kan soms gepaard gaan met vieringen om hen te eren voor hun speciale bijdrage in een specifiek domein\, of voor de gemeenschap in het algemeen. Er vinden verschillende evenementen plaats om de dag te markeren\, van lezingen en spreekbeurten tot theater. Het is voor veel scholen ook het moment om het onderwijzend personeel een bedankje te geven en hun leraren en leraressen in het zonnetje te zetten. Van scheurkalender en boekenbon tot een dagje uit worden er geschenken gegeven aan leraren en leraressen. Steeds vaker geven ook ouders een presentje aan de leraar of lerares van hun kinderen. \nLinks:\nWorld Teachers’ Day
