SUMMARY:IceCube Neutrino Observatory
DESCRIPTION:The IceCube Neutrino Observatory (or simply IceCube) is a neutrino observatory constructed at the Amundsen–Scott South Pole Station in Antarctica\, the project is a recognized CERN experiment (RE10). \nIts thousands of sensors are located under the Antarctic ice\, distributed over a cubic kilometre. Similar to its predecessor\, the Antarctic Muon And Neutrino Detector Array (AMANDA)\, IceCube consists of spherical optical sensors called Digital Optical Modules (DOMs)\, each with a photomultiplier tube (PMT) and a single-board data acquisition computer which sends digital data to the counting house on the surface above the array. IceCube was completed on 18 December 2010. DOMs are deployed on strings of 60 modules each at depths between 1\,450 and 2\,450 meters into holes melted in the ice using a hot water drill. SUMMARY:Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission
DESCRIPTION:The Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission is a satellite altimeter jointly developed and operated by NASA and CNES\, the French space agency\, in partnership with the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) and UK Space Agency (UKSA). \nThe objectives of the mission are to make the first global survey of the Earth’s surface water\, to observe the fine details of the ocean surface topography\, and to measure how terrestrial surface water bodies change over time. While past satellite missions like the Jason series altimeters (TOPEX/Poseidon\, Jason-1\, Jason-2\, Jason-3) have provided variation in river and lake water surface elevations at select locations\, SWOT will provide the first truly global observations of changing water levels\, stream slopes\, and inundation extents in rivers\, lakes\, and floodplains. In the world’s oceans\, SWOT will observe ocean circulation at unprecedented scales of 15–25 km (9.3–15.5 mi)\, approximately an order of magnitude finer than current satellites. DESCRIPTION:De campagne ‘Water op de kaart’ van het Nederlands Instituut voor Ecologie (NIOO-KNAW) en de stichting Natuur & Milieu moet een beeld gaan geven van de kwaliteit van water rond een riooloverstort. \nZo’n 40 burgerwetenschappers verspreid over Nederland gaan in hun eigen buurt monsters nemen van de zogenaamde kleine oppervlaktewateren: de sloten of vijvers om de hoek. Dat water blijkt namelijk van niet zo’n goeie kwaliteit. Bij hevige plensbuien\, die in toenemende mate voorkomen\, komt het riool vol met water te zitten en stroomt het over naar omliggende sloten en plassen. Daar zit het probleem. Door die overstort komen stoffen uit het riool als medicijnresten en poep en plas in het oppervlaktewater terecht. DESCRIPTION:The International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ) recognizes 100 years since the initial development of quantum mechanics and is a United Nations observance that aims to highlight the contributions of quantum science and practical applications of quantum technology. \nThe mission of the IYQ is to use the occasion of 100 years of quantum mechanics in 2025 to help raise public awareness of the importance and impact of quantum science and applications on all aspects of life. Anyone\, anywhere can participate in IYQ by helping others to learn more about quantum on this centennial occasion or simply taking the time to learn more about it themselves. No One Owns Quantum Science No individual\, society\, country\, institution\, or discipline can claim ownership of the past or future of quantum science; it is knowledge that should be free to all. IYQ recognizes those who put effort into studying\, developing\, investigating\, using\, and teaching quantum science and technology\, while seeking to solicit and answer questions from anyone who wants to learn more about it. Those who have insights into the beauty\, power\, and importance of quantum science and technology should use IYQ as a moment to share these insights with people who are less familiar with quantum. IYQ asks everyone to make an effort to reach out to people with different cultural backgrounds and aesthetic sensibilities. \nIf you’re inclined to present or seek out a unified story\, make note of where others dissent. DESCRIPTION:Lewotobi is a twin volcano located in the southeastern part of the island of Flores\, Indonesia\, it has two peaks; the Lewotobi Laki-laki (Male Lewotobi) and Lewotobi Perempuan (Female Lewotobi) stratovolcanoes\, the more active Lewotobi Laki-laki is about 2.1 km northwest of the taller Lewotobi Perempuan. \nOn 21 March\, Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted\, sending ash clouds over 8 km high. Authorities raised the alert to the highest level\, and Jetstar canceled some flights to Bali. The eruption followed smaller ones since 13 March. One person was injured during the evacuations\, although the details reported were unclear. Bali airport remained open\, but seven international flights were canceled. The geological agency warned of lava floods and continued activity. Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted again on 18 May\, prompting authorities to raise Indonesia’s highest volcanic alert level. Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted on 17 June\, sending ash clouds 11 km high\, prompting authorities to raise Indonesia’s highest volcanic alert level again\, with a plume visible from a distance of 90 km to 150 km. SUMMARY:Biomass : ESA's forest mission
DESCRIPTION:Biomass is an Earth observing satellite planned for launch by the European Space Agency (ESA) on 29 April 2025 from Kourou\, French Guiana on a Vega C launch vehicle\, the mission will provide the first comprehensive measurements of global forest biomass. \nIt is meant to last for five years\, monitoring at least eight growth cycles in the world’s forests. The Biomass satellite is part of ESA’s Living Planet Programme\, which consists of Earth observation missions. Its initial launch date was set to 2020\, but that has since been delayed to 2025. The entire cost of the mission was placed at around 400 million euros. The main scientific instrument aboard Biomass will be a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) operating at 435 MHz. This day is celebrated on July 22 every year because the value of Pi is denoted by the fraction 22/7. Here\, in the fraction 22/7 which denoted Pi\, the numerator 22 symbolizes the date (22nd day of the month) and numerator 7 indicates the month (July). Approximations for the mathematical constant pi (π) in the history of mathematics reached an accuracy within 0.04% of the true value before the beginning of the Common Era. In Chinese mathematics\, this was improved to approximations correct to what corresponds to about seven decimal digits by the 5th century. Further progress was not made until the 14th century\, when Madhava of Sangamagrama developed approximations correct to eleven and then thirteen digits. Jamshīd al-Kāshī achieved sixteen digits next. Early modern mathematicians reached an accuracy of 35 digits by the beginning of the 17th century (Ludolph van Ceulen)\, and 126 digits by the 19th century (Jurij Vega)\, surpassing the accuracy required for any conceivable application outside of pure mathematics. The record of manual approximation of π is held by William Shanks\, who calculated 527 decimals correctly in 1853. Since the middle of the 20th century\, the approximation of π has been the task of electronic digital computers (for a comprehensive account\, see Chronology of computation of π). It covers the five detection types\, their parameters and statistics\, and the algorithm for finding them.\nSETI@home: Data Analysis and Findings describes the back end (Nebula) and its results: RFI removal\, candidate finding and ranking. It explains how artificial signals\, or ‘birdies’\, were used to optimize algorithms and estimate overall sensitivity.\n\nSETI@home (“SETI at home”) is a project of the Berkeley SETI Research Center to analyze radio signals with the aim of searching for signs of extraterrestrial intelligence. Until March 2020\, it was run as an Internet-based public volunteer computing project that employed the BOINC software platform. It is hosted by the Space Sciences Laboratory at the University of California\, Berkeley\, and is one of many activities undertaken as part of the worldwide SETI effort. SETI@home software was released to the public on May 17\, 1999\, making it the third large-scale use of volunteer computing over the Internet for research purposes\, after Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search (GIMPS) was launched in 1996 and distributed.net in 1997. Along with MilkyWay@home and Einstein@home\, it has the investigation of phenomena in interstellar space as its primary purpose. In March 2020\, the project stopped sending out new work to SETI@home users\, bringing the crowdsourced computing aspect of the project to a stop. At the time\, the team intended to shift focus onto the analysis and interpretation of the 20 years’ worth of accumulated data. On March 31\, 2020\, UC Berkeley stopped sending out new data for SETI@Home clients to process\, ending the effort for the time being. The program stated they were at a point of “diminishing returns” with the volunteer processing and needed to put the effort into hibernation while they processed the results. Until 2020\, SETI@home procured its data from the Arecibo Observatory facility that was operated by the National Astronomy and Ionosphere Center and administered by SRI International. The decreasing operating budget for the observatory has created a shortfall of funds which has not been made up from other sources such as private donors\, NASA\, other foreign research institutions\, nor private non-profit organizations such as SETI@home. However\, in the overall long-term views held by many involved with the SETI project\, any usable radio telescope could take over from Arecibo (which completely collapsed in December 2020)\, as all the SETI systems are portable and relocatable. \nLinks:\nSETI@home

DESCRIPTION:De aardbeving bij schiereiland Kamtsjatka op 30 juli 2025 om 11:24 (lokale tijd) was een beving met een magnitude 8\,8 op de schaal van Richter\, op 19 kilometer diepte. \nHet epicentrum van de beving lag in open zee op zo’n 130 kilometer van de Russische kust. De aardbeving heeft tot tsunamiwaarschuwingen geleid in onder meer Rusland\, Japan\, de Verenigde Staten\, China\, Hawaï en Ecuador. De hoge golven hebben ook Japan bereikt en in Hawaï waren evacuaties. Er zijn geen slachtoffers gemeld\, wel was er een tsunami die de Russische havenplaats Severo-Koerilsk onder water zette. Er volgden naschokken met een magnitude tot 6\,9. De Kljoetsjevskaja Sopka\, een vulkaan op het schiereiland Kamtsjatka en een van de hoogste vulkanen ter wereld\, barstte uit als gevolg van de beving. Ook de Krasjeninnikov vulkaan op het schiereiland barstte enkele dagen later op 3 augustus 2025 voor het eerst in 475 jaar weer uit. DESCRIPTION:Time lapse images from the camera south of the calving front. a\, 2023-08-24 06:57 UTC\, b\, 2023-08-24 07:17 UTC\nAs glaciers melt\, huge chunks of ice break free and splash into the sea\, generating tsunami-size waves and leaving behind a powerful wake as they drift away. \nThis process\, called calving\, is important for researchers to understand. But the front of a glacier is a dangerous place for data collection.  To solve this problem\, a team of researchers from the University of Washington and collaborating institutions used a fiber-optic cable to capture calving dynamics across the fjord of the Eqalorutsit Kangilliit Sermiat glacier in South Greenland. Data collected from the cable allowed them to document — without getting too close — one of the key processes that is accelerating the rate of glacial mass loss and in turn\, threatening the stability of ice sheets\, with consequences for global ocean currents and local ecosystems.  The data provides\, for the first time\, a deeper look at the relationship between ice and the water it collapses into\, from surface waves to disturbances within the water column.
