SUMMARY:IceCube Neutrino Observatory
DESCRIPTION:The IceCube Neutrino Observatory (or simply IceCube) is a neutrino observatory constructed at the Amundsen–Scott South Pole Station in Antarctica\, the project is a recognized CERN experiment (RE10). \nIts thousands of sensors are located under the Antarctic ice\, distributed over a cubic kilometre. Similar to its predecessor\, the Antarctic Muon And Neutrino Detector Array (AMANDA)\, IceCube consists of spherical optical sensors called Digital Optical Modules (DOMs)\, each with a photomultiplier tube (PMT) and a single-board data acquisition computer which sends digital data to the counting house on the surface above the array. IceCube was completed on 18 December 2010. DOMs are deployed on strings of 60 modules each at depths between 1\,450 and 2\,450 meters into holes melted in the ice using a hot water drill. IceCube is designed to look for point sources of neutrinos in the teraelectronvolt (TeV) range to explore the highest-energy astrophysical processes. In November 2013 it was announced that IceCube had detected 28 neutrinos that likely originated outside the Solar System. \nLinks:\nIceCube Neutrino Observatory \nIceCube: the coolest way to detect neutrinos (TV The Royal Institution) \nIceCube: the coolest way to detect neutrinos \nANITA experiment \nOur galaxy seen through a new lens: neutrinos detected by IceCube \n[LIVE] Observation of high-energy neutrinos from the Galactic plane

SUMMARY:Manifest tegen de uitverkoop van wetenschap

SUMMARY:Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission
DESCRIPTION:The Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission is a satellite altimeter jointly developed and operated by NASA and CNES\, the French space agency\, in partnership with the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) and UK Space Agency (UKSA). \nThe objectives of the mission are to make the first global survey of the Earth’s surface water\, to observe the fine details of the ocean surface topography\, and to measure how terrestrial surface water bodies change over time. While past satellite missions like the Jason series altimeters (TOPEX/Poseidon\, Jason-1\, Jason-2\, Jason-3) have provided variation in river and lake water surface elevations at select locations\, SWOT will provide the first truly global observations of changing water levels\, stream slopes\, and inundation extents in rivers\, lakes\, and floodplains. In the world’s oceans\, SWOT will observe ocean circulation at unprecedented scales of 15–25 km (9.3–15.5 mi)\, approximately an order of magnitude finer than current satellites. Because it uses wide-swath altimetry technology\, SWOT will almost completely observe the world’s oceans and freshwater bodies with repeated high-resolution elevation measurements\, allowing observations of variations. \nLinks:\nSurface Water and Ocean Topography at NASA.gov \nOcean Surface Topography from Space at NASA.gov \nCnes project Library at CNES.fr \nAVISO+ portal for SWOT

SUMMARY:2024 / 2025 Stromboli and Etna eruption
DESCRIPTION:On 3 July 2024\, Stromboli erupted along with Etna\, as Protezione Civile issued the highest alert level. \nItaly’s Mount Etna and the smaller Stromboli volcano spewed hot ash and lava\, raising alert levels on the Mediterranean island of Sicily and forcing a temporary shutdown of the airport in Catania\, disrupting flights. Etna\, one of the world’s most active volcanoes\, has seen intense activity in recent days\, lighting up the sky near Catania\, while Stromboli off the northern Sicilian coast spilled lava into the sea. \nLinks:\nSicily closes airport as Etna and Stromboli volcanoes erupt \nEtna vulkaan én Stromboli tegelijk in uitbarsting \nEtna volcano eruption updates \nThousands of tourists flock to see Etna eruption\, blocking rescue services

SUMMARY:Water op de Kaart

SUMMARY:Fentale Volcano - signs of possible eruption 2024 - 2025
DESCRIPTION:Starting from late September 2024\, Ethiopia has experienced series of earthquakes ranging from 4.8 to 5.8 Richter magnitude scale with initial epicenter from Afar Region‘s Awash Fentale and spread across much of central Ethiopia. \nOn 6 October 2024\, a series of earthquakes with 4.9-magnitude tremor occurred starting to Afar Region‘s Awash Fentale area and spread into Oromia Region\, causing widespread concern. The epicenter was about 23 km northeast of Awash as the tremor occurred at the depth of 10 km and the shaking was felt across central Ethiopia. Over 30 homes collapsed in Afar while thousands fled to neighboring area as refuge. Pubic officials responded by shutdown of transportation infrastructure in the tremor zone to investigate the damage and power outages were likely to be measured. On 13 October\, a magnitude of 4.6 quake happened in Oromia Region at around 07:37. The shaking affected throughout central and eastern Ethiopia\, such as southern Afar\, southern Amhara\, and central Oromia regions\, northwestern Somali Region\, and the capital Addis Ababa. Also on 16 October\, an earthquake was observed in Metehara area in Oromia at 23:11 local time with 4.8 magnitude registered. The Volcano Discovery discovered that the tremor struck at the shallow depth of 10 km beneath the Earth surface. The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) was the first to detail seismic event\, providing crucial data for understanding its effects. According to initial reports\, residents nearby the epicenter were likely saw a quake\, though caused minimal damage. \nOn 29 December\, an earthquake reoccurred in afternoon and until in the morning 5.1 magnitude. Prior to this\, two earthquakes occurred in a week. In January 2025\, 10 earthquakes were recorded within 24 hours in a week. According to the US Geological Survey\, these multiple quakes were 4.3 to 5.1 on the Richter scale occurred around Fentale volcano in Awash. Since 3 January 2025\, signs of a volcanic eruption began to appear\, prompting authorities to move residents to temporary shelters. The Ethiopian Geological Institute posted a video in Facebook page depicting dust and smoke emerging from a volcano in Awash Fentale in Afar region. On that day\, another quake strike with the magnitude 5.8 in epicenter of Addis Ababa. It was at a shallow depth of 10 km according the US Geological Survey and the German Research Centre for Geosciences. \nLinks:\n“Ethiopia rocked by series of earthquakes in 24 hours”. The East African. \n“Ethiopia: Over 30 Homes Collapse in Afar As Earthquakes Intensify in Awash Fentale”. Addis Standard. \n“Ethiopia: A magnitude-4.9 earthquake occurs in the Oromia Region Oct. 6”. Ethiopia: A magnitude-4.9 earthquake occurs in the Oromia Region Oct. 6 | Crisis24. \n“Ethiopia: Magnitude-4.6 offshore earthquake occurs south of Awash\, Afar Region\, at around 07:37 Oct. 13”. Ethiopia: Magnitude-4.6 offshore earthquake occurs south of Awash\, Afar Region\, at around 07:37 Oct. 13 | Crisis24. \n“Earthquake Shakes Oromiya\, Ethiopia: Residents Feel Tremors In Addis Ababa”. ebc.et. \n“Earthquake hits Awash Fentale Area again”. Borkena Ethiopian News \n“Ethiopia rocked by series of earthquakes in 24 hours”. The EastAfrican. 2025-01-03. \n“Risk of Ethiopian volcano eruption prompts evacuation of residents”. Al Arabiya English. 2025-01-03. \n“Volcanic eruption hits central Ethiopia’s Afar region amid frequent tremors”. www.aa.com.tr. \n“Earthquake of magnitude 5.8 strikes Ethiopia”. Deccan Herald. SUMMARY:Year of Quantum Science and Technology
DESCRIPTION:The International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ) recognizes 100 years since the initial development of quantum mechanics and is a United Nations observance that aims to highlight the contributions of quantum science and practical applications of quantum technology. \nThe mission of the IYQ is to use the occasion of 100 years of quantum mechanics in 2025 to help raise public awareness of the importance and impact of quantum science and applications on all aspects of life. Anyone\, anywhere can participate in IYQ by helping others to learn more about quantum on this centennial occasion or simply taking the time to learn more about it themselves. No One Owns Quantum Science No individual\, society\, country\, institution\, or discipline can claim ownership of the past or future of quantum science; it is knowledge that should be free to all. IYQ recognizes those who put effort into studying\, developing\, investigating\, using\, and teaching quantum science and technology\, while seeking to solicit and answer questions from anyone who wants to learn more about it. Those who have insights into the beauty\, power\, and importance of quantum science and technology should use IYQ as a moment to share these insights with people who are less familiar with quantum. IYQ asks everyone to make an effort to reach out to people with different cultural backgrounds and aesthetic sensibilities. \nIf you’re inclined to present or seek out a unified story\, make note of where others dissent. If you’re inclined to highlight disputes and controversies\, recognize where there is consensus. If you’re inclined to promote or to understand established knowledge\, make note of what is still unknown. Manythings have been and will be said about quantum science and technology that are untrue or misleading. The remedy for these statements is more quantum speech. All people proceed from learning simple\, sometimes incorrect stories to deeper\, more nuanced ones. IYQ aims to meet people where they are in their understanding and help them to construct pathways for this journey. There is often a disparity between how we hope scientific inquiry is conducted and how it is actually practiced by individuals and institutions. IYQ is an opportunity to communicate and model the ideals of how science should be practiced in the hope that future generations will take up these values. Pride in the past and optimism about the future are welcome\, and stories often have to be simplified out of necessity\, but IYQ should always aim to foreground honesty about the past and future of quantum science and technology. If quantum has brought joy to your life\, share this joy with others. \nLinks:\nYear of Quantum Science and Technology \nKwantummechanica \nOpening Ceremony of the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology

SUMMARY:Focus : Bacteriofagen: Hoop uit het riool (TV NPO 2)
World Antibiotic Awareness Week / World AMR Awareness Week / Antibiotica bewustwordingsweek 2024

SUMMARY:Periodic Table Day / Dag van het Periodiek systeem 2025
DESCRIPTION:The periodic table (Periodiek systeem)\, also known as the periodic table of elements\, is a tabular display of the chemical elements\, which are arranged by atomic number\, electron configuration\, and recurring chemical properties. \nThe structure of the table shows periodic trends. The seven rows of the table\, called periods\, generally have metals on the left and nonmetals on the right. The columns\, called groups\, contain elements with similar chemical behaviours. Six groups have accepted names as well as assigned numbers: for example\, group 17 elements are the halogens; and group 18 are the noble gases. Also displayed are four simple rectangular areas or blocks associated with the filling of different atomic orbitals. The elements from atomic numbers 1 (hydrogen) to 118 (oganesson) have all been discovered or synthesized\, completing seven full rows of the periodic table. The first 94 elements\, hydrogen to plutonium\, all occur naturally\, though some are found only in trace amounts and a few were discovered in nature only after having first been synthesized. Elements 95 to 118 have only been synthesized in laboratories\, nuclear reactors\, or nuclear explosions. The synthesis of elements having higher atomic numbers is currently being pursued: these elements would begin an eighth row\, and theoretical work has been done to suggest possible candidates for this extension. Numerous synthetic radioisotopes of naturally occurring elements have also been produced in laboratories. \nThe organization of the periodic table can be used to derive relationships between the various element properties\, and also to predict chemical properties and behaviours of undiscovered or newly synthesized elements. Russian chemist Dmitri Mendeleev published the first recognizable periodic table in 1869\, developed mainly to illustrate periodic trends of the then-known elements. He also predicted some properties of unidentified elements that were expected to fill gaps within the table. Most of his forecasts soon proved to be correct\, culminating with the discovery of gallium and germanium in 1875 and 1886 respectively\, which corroborated his predictions. Mendeleev’s idea has been slowly expanded and refined with the discovery or synthesis of further new elements and the development of new theoretical models to explain chemical behaviour. The modern periodic table now provides a useful framework for analyzing chemical reactions\, and continues to be widely used in chemistry\, nuclear physics and other sciences. Some discussion remains ongoing regarding the placement and categorisation of specific elements\, the future extension and limits of the table\, and whether there is an optimal form of the table. \nDeze periodieke tabel toont de primaire bron voor elk element\, klik op afbeelding om bericht te lezen\nLinks:\nPeriodic Table Day \nAlternative periodic tables \nMendeleev first presented his periodic table on 06-03-1869 to the Russian Chemical Society \nAPOD: 2020 August 9 – The Origin of Elements \nChemHaiku \nPeriodic Videos \nKwantummechanica

SUMMARY:Binnenkern aarde draait niet alleen langzamer\, maar verandert ook van vorm / Annual-scale variability in both the rotation rate and near surface of Earth’s inner core - publication

SUMMARY:Observation of an ultra-high-energy cosmic neutrino with KM3NeT - publication
\nLinks:\nNeutrino met hoogste energie ooit gedetecteerd\, ‘dachten wel dat ze bestonden’ \nFishing for Neutrinos in the Deep Sea (TV webcast) \nWhy scientists are so excited about the highest-energy ‘ghost particle’ ever seen

SUMMARY:Darwin Dag / Darwin Day / Charles Darwin geboortedag (1809) 2025

SUMMARY:Changing life expectancy in European countries 1990–2021: a subanalysis of causes and risk factors from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021 - publication
DESCRIPTION:Life expectancy at birth for both sexes combined\, from 1990 to 2021 by country\, ordered by 2019 life expectancy\, click picture to read\nDecades of steady improvements in life expectancy in Europe slowed down from around 2011\, well before the COVID-19 pandemic\, for reasons which remain disputed. \nThe writers of the article ‘Changing life expectancy in European countries 1990–2021‘ aimed to assess how changes in risk factors and cause-specific death rates in different European countries related to changes in life expectancy in those countries before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. They used data and methods from the Global Burden of Diseases\, Injuries\, and Risk Factors Study 2021 to compare changes in life expectancy at birth\, causes of death\, and population exposure to risk factors in 16 European Economic Area countries (Austria\, Belgium\, Denmark\, Finland\, France\, Germany\, Greece\, Iceland\, Ireland\, Italy\, Luxembourg\, the Netherlands\, Norway\, Portugal\, Spain\, and Sweden) and the four UK nations (England\, Northern Ireland\, Scotland\, and Wales) for three time periods: 1990–2011\, 2011–19\, and 2019–21. Changes in life expectancy and causes of death were estimated with an established life expectancy cause-specific decomposition method\, and compared with summary exposure values of risk factors for the major causes of death influencing life expectancy.

SUMMARY:Fishing for Neutrinos in the Deep Sea (TV webcast)
DESCRIPTION:At a depth of 3.5 kilometers in the Mediterranean Sea\, Dutch scientists are constructing a massive neutrino detector called Kilometre Cube Neutrino Telescope (KM3NeT) spanning one cubic kilometer. \nRecently KM3NeT detected an extraordinarily high-energy neutrino originating from outer space. Neutrinos are fundamental particles often referred to as “ghost particles” because they rarely interact with other matter. The energy of this cosmic neutrino was significantly greater than that of any neutrino previously detected on Earth. Is this a groundbreaking discovery? Moreover\, what do we hope to learn from studying neutrinos? And why are scientists putting a telescope on the bottom of the ocean in the first place? Daan van Eijk will explain what  is detected by exploring the inner workings of the KM3NeT detector. How does the detector allow us to detect these ghostly particles? What can they reveal about the astrophysical processes in our universe that produce these elusive particles? \nLinks:\nFishing for Neutrinos in the Deep Sea \nObservation of an ultra-high-energy cosmic neutrino with KM3NeT – publication

SUMMARY:Landelijke kikkerdriltelling 2025
\nLinks:\nLandelijke kikkerdriltelling \n#WorldFrogDay Wereld Kikkerdag 2025

SUMMARY:“Cool” years are now hotter than the “warm” years of the past: tracking global temperatures through El Niño and La Niña - publication
DESCRIPTION:In 2024\, the world was around 1.5°C warmer than it was in pre-industrial times. You can see this in the chart below\, which shows average warming relative to average temperatures from 1861 to 1890. \nTemperatures\, as defined by “climate”\, are based on temperatures over longer periods of time — typically 20-to-30-year averages — rather than single-year data points. But even when based on longer-term averages\, the world has still warmed by around 1.3°C. But you’ll also notice\, in the chart\, that temperatures haven’t increased linearly. There are spikes and dips along the long-run trend. Many of these short-term fluctuations are caused by “ENSO” — the El Niño-Southern Oscillation — a natural climate cycle caused by changes in wind patterns and sea surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean. While it’s caused by patterns in the Pacific Ocean and most strongly affects countries in the tropics\, it also impacts global temperatures and climate. There are two key phases of this cycle: the La Niña phase\, which tends to cause cooler global temperatures\, and the El Niño phase\, which brings hotter conditions. The world cycles between El Niño and La Niña phases every two to seven years. There are also “neutral” periods between these phases where the world is not in either extreme. The zig-zag trend of global temperatures becomes understandable when you are taking the phases of the ENSO cycles into account. In the chart below\, we see the data on global temperatures\, but the line is now colored by the ENSO phase at that time. The El Niño (warm phase) is shown in orange and red\, and the La Niña (cold phase) is shown in blue. You can see that temperatures often reach a short-term peak during warm El Niño years before falling back slightly as the world moves into La Niña years\, shown in blue. \n\nLinks:\n“Cool” years are now hotter than the “warm” years of the past: tracking global temperatures through El Niño and La Niña

SUMMARY:#BellingcatChallenge - launch
DESCRIPTION:The Bellingcat Open Source Challenge. \nAt the end of 2024\, Bellingcat released a set of online challenges that we hoped would test the skills of our audience and the wider open source investigator community. Bellingcat wanted the challenges to be educational\, to encourage people to carry out responsible online research and\, most importantly\, to be fun! Around 35\,000 people took part\, far more than we expected. Some produced blogs about how they attacked the challenges\, while GeoGuessr expert Rainbolt posted a video where he tried to solve five challenges in under 30 minutes. Bellingcat has now decided to make these challenges a regular thing – a monthly thing\, to be precise. On March 3\, 2025 Bellingcat launched the first set\, which you can find here. They are also introducing a monthly Bellingcat Challenge newsletter that will announce when new challenges are launched\, provide detailed answers to the previous month’s questions and highlight the most creative and cool ways that people came to their conclusions. Each monthly challenge will consist of five open source research questions\, all centred around a single theme. The first question will be published on the first Monday of every month\, with a new challenge released each day that week. So\, by the end of the first week of every month\, you should have five open source challenges to keep you busy. The challenges will\, among other things\, test your geolocation\, chronolocation\, shiptracking\, satellite imagery analysis\, image verification and flight tracking skills. Bellingcat Open Source Challenge wants to include as many open source research techniques as possible. Anyone is encouraged taking part to join our Discord server\, where staff and members of the community will be sharing useful tips and techniques in the #BellingcatChallenge channel. On March 12\, at 17:00 CET\, there will be a live broadcast on the Bellingcat Patreon channel where Bellingcat founder\, Eliot Higgins will go through the challenges. \nLinks:\nThe Bellingcat Open Source Challenge is Back

SUMMARY:World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development / Wereld Techniek Dag voor Duurzame Ontwikkeling (TV UNESCO webcast) 2025
DESCRIPTION:Engineering has always had an essential role in development and human welfare\, ensuring that future generations of engineers and scientists will be able to design solutions for local and global challenges is critical. \nUNESCO’s General Conference proclaimed the 4 March World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development during its 40th session in November 2019 (40 C/64)\, to raise awareness of the role of engineering in modern life\, which is essential to mitigate the impact of climate change and advance sustainable development\, especially in Africa and the small island developing states (SIDS). In spite of the importance of engineering for our life and future\, women have been historically underrepresented in engineering fields\, typically making up only 10 – 20% of the engineering work force.  Even in countries where the numbers of women studying STI have increased\, this trend has not translated into more women entering the workplace. Too many female students who graduate do not go into the engineering profession. The barriers are often connected to persistent gender stereotypes in this field\, inadequate policies or educational environments that do not meet their needs and aspirations. UNESCO is placing a high priority on activities that promote awareness of engineering as a career\, as well as on those that demonstrate the importance of youth studying science\, technology\, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The theme of World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development 2024 is “Engineering solutions for a sustainable world”. \nLinks:\nWorld Engineering Day for Sustainable Development \nWorld Engineering Day Live

SUMMARY:How We Sold Our Future (TV webcast)
DESCRIPTION:For decades we have known about the dangers of global warming\, nevertheless\, greenhouse gas emissions continue to increase. \nHow can we explain our failure to take the necessary measures to stop climate change? In How We Sold Our Future: The Failure to Fight Climate Change\, sociologist Jens Beckert delves into the connections between capitalist structures and our failure to address the climate crisis. How do we stop selling our future for the next quarterly figures\, the upcoming election result and today’s pleasure? In a short lecture Jens Beckert will share the key elements of this book\, followed by a panel discussion with Marijke Leliveld and Lukas Linsi\, moderated by Michael Schwan. These three academics take part in the Centre Philosophy\, Politics and Economics. Members at the centre collaborate on various research programmes that aim to address some of the most urgent questions of our world\, such as climate change\, fiscal regulation\, social and political trust\, political participation and sustainable development. \nLinks:\nHow We Sold Our Future

SUMMARY:De smartphone-loze mens (TV NPO 2 / NPO Start)
DESCRIPTION:In de documentaire ‘De smartphone-loze mens’ volgt filmmaker Milou Gevers een zeldzame groep: mensen zonder smartphone.
