SUMMARY:Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission
DESCRIPTION:The Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission is a satellite altimeter jointly developed and operated by NASA and CNES\, the French space agency\, in partnership with the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) and UK Space Agency (UKSA). \nThe objectives of the mission are to make the first global survey of the Earth’s surface water\, to observe the fine details of the ocean surface topography\, and to measure how terrestrial surface water bodies change over time. While past satellite missions like the Jason series altimeters (TOPEX/Poseidon\, Jason-1\, Jason-2\, Jason-3) have provided variation in river and lake water surface elevations at select locations\, SWOT will provide the first truly global observations of changing water levels\, stream slopes\, and inundation extents in rivers\, lakes\, and floodplains. In the world’s oceans\, SWOT will observe ocean circulation at unprecedented scales of 15–25 km (9.3–15.5 mi)\, approximately an order of magnitude finer than current satellites. Because it uses wide-swath altimetry technology\, SWOT will almost completely observe the world’s oceans and freshwater bodies with repeated high-resolution elevation measurements\, allowing observations of variations. \nLinks:\nSurface Water and Ocean Topography at NASA.gov \nOcean Surface Topography from Space at NASA.gov \nCnes project Library at CNES.fr \nAVISO+ portal for SWOT

SUMMARY:Hayli Gubbi : Uitbarsting in november 2025

SUMMARY:Earth’s Rotation Day / Aarde Rotatie Dag 2026
DESCRIPTION:January 8 is Earth’s Rotation Day\, the day commemorates when French Physicist\, Leon Foucault\, demonstrated the Earth rotates on its axis in 1851. \nTo prove his theory\, Foucault suspended a lead-filled brass sphere\, now called the Foucault Pendulum from the top of the Pantheon in Paris. He showed that the plane of the swing of the pendulum rotated relative to the Earth’s rotation. You can now see the Foucault Pendulum demonstrating the rotation of the Earth in science museums around the world. \nLinks:\nEarth’s Rotation Day: History and significance behind the day that celebrates the 24-hour phenomenon \nMegaconstructie veranderde mogelijk de rotatie van de aarde \nEarth Rotation Day 2026: 7 Fascinating Facts That Show Why This Day Matters

SUMMARY:#10April #InternationalDayOfVolcanoes #JournéeInternationaleDesVolcans #GiornataInternazionaleDeiVulcani #DiaInternacionalDeLosVolcanes – petition 2026
DESCRIPTION:Petition proposing an ‘International Day of Volcanoes’ to be observed officially by the United Nations and we are asking that the U.N. General Assembly please consider a resolution for establishing an ‘International Day of Volcanoes’ on 10th April every year. \nTanguy De Saint-Cyr\, owner of French volcano tour company\, that came up with the concept for an ‘International Day of Volcanoes’ and Jeannie Curtis\, a New Zealand technical writer and educator are proposing an ‘International Day of Volcanoes’ to be officially recognised and observed by the United Nations and ask that the General Assembly please consider a resolution for establishing an ‘International Day of Volcanoes’ on 10th April. The date of 10th April has no recognised international day and we propose this date for the following reason: On 10 April 1815 Gunung (Mount) Tambora in Indonesia erupted and generated massive pyroclastic flows and tsunami that instantly killed 10\,000 locals\, who were unaware of the danger. The massive eruption injected huge amounts of aerosols into the Earth’s stratosphere\, causing a global haze which reflected back the incoming sunlight and cooled our planet by half a degree (celsius). This affected the planet’s climate for three years\, causing crop failure and famine\, resulting in up to 60\,000 more human deaths globally – as well as affecting animals\, fauna and agriculture. Tambora is still the deadliest eruption in recorded history\, and 10th April is a date in which the people of the World can reflect upon an “International Day of Volcanoes’ \nLinks:\nSUPPORT a proposal to United Nations for an ‘International day of Volcanoes’ to be recognised on 10th April \nInternational Day of Volcanoes

SUMMARY:Day in Memory of the Victims of Earthquakes 2026
DESCRIPTION:In April 2025\, the United Nations General Assembly designated 29 April as the International Day in Memory of the Victims of Earthquakes inviting all Member States\, organizations of the United Nations system and other relevant international organizations to collaborate on the commemoration. \nIn doing so\, the General Assembly reaffirmed its commitment to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and recalled the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015–2030\, recognizing that disasters continue to undermine sustainable development. These commitments underscore that understanding disaster risk\, strengthening prevention and mitigation\, and improving preparedness and effective response are essential to protecting lives and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. Earthquakes are among the deadliest natural hazards\, often striking without warning and causing devastating loss of life and long lasting social\, economic\, and psychological harm. Recent earthquakes in countries such as Myanmar and Afghanistan are stark reminders of how these events can destroy infrastructure\, displace entire communities\, and affect generations long after the ground stops shaking. Their impact is severe and measurable. Since 1900\, there have been at least 12 major earthquakes\, each of which killed more than 50\,000 people. Earthquakes also have substantial economic consequences\, accounting for more than a quarter of global disaster losses and causing trillions of dollars in damage over recent decades. Beyond direct destruction\, they can trigger fires\, tsunamis\, and landslides\, compounding damage across housing\, health\, education\, and livelihoods. Earthquake risk is driven by factors such as rapid urbanization in seismic areas\, weak or ageing infrastructure\, poverty\, inequality\, and poor enforcement of building codes—making risk informed development and resilient infrastructure essential. In acknowledgement of the grave consequences of these disasters\, the United Nations has established the International Day in Memory of the Victims of Earthquakes\, observed annually on 29 April\, and tasked the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) with facilitating its observance. The Day provides a moment to remember those lost and renew commitment to prevention\, preparedness\, and building back better\, in line with the priorities of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction. \nLinks:\nWhen the ground shakes: Remembering victims and reducing future loss
