General Assembly please consider a resolution for establishing an ‘International Day of Volcanoes’ on 10th April every year. \nTanguy De Saint-Cyr\, owner of French volcano tour company\, that came up with the concept for an ‘International Day of Volcanoes’ and Jeannie Curtis\, a New Zealand technical writer and educator are proposing an ‘International Day of Volcanoes’ to be officially recognised and observed by the United Nations and ask that the General Assembly please consider a resolution for establishing an ‘International Day of Volcanoes’ on 10th April. The date of 10th April has no recognised international day and we propose this date for the following reason: On 10 April 1815 Gunung (Mount) Tambora in Indonesia erupted and generated massive pyroclastic flows and tsunami that instantly killed 10\,000 locals\, who were unaware of the danger. The massive eruption injected huge amounts of aerosols into the Earth’s stratosphere\, causing a global haze which reflected back the incoming sunlight and cooled our planet by half a degree (celsius). This affected the planet’s climate for three years\, causing crop failure and famine\, resulting in up to 60\,000 more human deaths globally – as well as affecting animals\, fauna and agriculture. SUMMARY:Hayli Gubbi : Uitbarsting in november 2025
DESCRIPTION:Door Contains modified Copernicus Sentinel data 2025\nDe Hayli Gubbi (Amhaars: ሃይሊ-ጉቢ) is een schildvulkaan in de regio Afar in Ethiopië\, ligt in de Danakildepressie en maakt deel uit van de Erta Ale-bergketen. \nDe 493 meter hoge berg ligt in een gebied dat weinig bestudeerd is door vulkanologen. Hij werd tot 23 november 2025 beschouwd als een slapende vulkaan\, want de laatste uitbarsting die bij het Global Volcanism Program bekend was\, dateerde van voor het Holoceen\, dat zo’n twaalfduizend jaar geleden begon; er kunnen daarna wel onopgemerkte uitbarstingen geweest zijn. In de omgeving liggen actieve vulkanen\, waaronder de Erta Ale\, die een lavameer vormt. Hoewel er geen uitbarstingen van de Hayli Gubbi bekend waren\, toonden satellietbeelden gestolde lavastromen die wezen op activiteit in de afgelopen honderden jaren. In juli 2025 barstte de Erta Ale uit en onderzoek gaf aan dat magma van die vulkaan op dertig kilometer diepte een intrusie had gevormd bij de Hayli Gubbi. Daar kwam de aarde iets omhoog en werden witte rookpluimen gezien\, zodat rekening werd gehouden met meer activiteit. De twee vulkanen liggen op dezelfde mantelpluim. Het gebied ligt in de Grote Slenk\, ook bekend als de Riftvallei\, waar de Afrikaanse Plaat zich aan het splitsen is en wegdrijft van de Arabische Plaat\, wat aanleiding geeft tot vulkanisme. Gedurende de uitbarsting van 2025 werd het nabijgelegen dorp Afdera door de uitbarsting bedekt met een deken van vulkanische as. Voor zover bekend zijn er geen dodelijke slachtoffers gevallen\, maar het vee\, dat van groot belang is voor de bevolking\, kan geen voedsel vinden door de aslaag. Er ontstond in enkele uren een aspluim van veertien kilometer hoog\, tot boven de hoogte van de burgerluchtvaart. Zo’n hoge kolom met een paddenstoelwolk is ongebruikelijk voor de regio en voor schildvulkanen. De uitbarsting was erg lawaaiig\, maar leidde niet tot seismische activiteit. De eerste waarschuwing voor de luchtvaart werd uitgegeven op 23 november om 14:55 UTC. Op de subtropische straalstroom trok de wolk snel naar het oosten\, waarbij de concentratie zwaveldioxide in de atmosfeer sterk verhoogd was. Op 23 en 24 november werd de wolk waargenomen boven de Rode Zee\, Jemen\, Oman en de Arabische Zee. De 24e bereikte de as Pakistan en India\, vierduizend kilometer oostelijker. Boven India bevond de as zich op de hoogte van het vliegverkeer; vliegtuigen die de wolk niet konden ontwijken\, moesten na de landing geïnspecteerd worden en vliegvelden werden gereinigd. More than 1\,100 people were killed and more than 3\,500 others were injured. \nThe epicenter of the quake was located in Nurgal District\, Kunar Province. It had a hypocenter 8 kilometres (5 miles) beneath the surface\, and the shaking had a maximum Modified Mercalli intensity of IX (Violent) in Nurgal. Several geological and structural factors led to a relatively heavy impact for the earthquake’s relatively moderate size\, with around 3\,000 deaths\, 4\,000 injuries and 8\,000 collapsed homes; almost all of the casualties and destruction occurred in five districts of Kunar Province\, where almost all buildings were damaged or destroyed\, with nearby provinces also suffering damage and casualites. It was the deadliest earthquake to affect Afghanistan since 1998. Another earthquake\, the second within a week\, has hit Afghanistan on Tuesday 02 September as the nation was already reeling from a devastating quake over the weekend. Tuesday’s magnitude 5.2 tremor hit near Jalalabad\, which was also the epicenter of Sunday’s quake. Rescuers are struggling to reach the remote\, mountainous area. Entire villages have been destroyed and it’s feared the death toll could rise further\, with many people feared trapped under the rubble. SUMMARY:Neerstorten van de Birchgletsjer bij Blatten
DESCRIPTION:Op 28 mei 2025 werd Blatten\, een gemeente en plaats in het Lötschental aan de oevers van Lonza\, in het Zwitserse kanton Wallis\, samen met de omliggende dalbodem voor 90% bedolven door een ijs- en steenlawine van 3 miljoen kubieke meter en nadien ontstond op de dalbodem stroomopwaarts een natuurlijk stuwmeer dat daar overgebleven huizen overstroomde. \nDe lawine bestond uit het omlaagstorten van een groot deel van de Birchgletsjer ten zuiden van het dorp\, die door het afbrokkelen van grote hoeveelheden puin van de hogergelegen top Kleines Nesthorn (3342 meter) instabiel geworden was. Vele huizen werden bedolven en verwoest. DESCRIPTION:The January 7\, 2025\, M7.1 earthquake near Xizang\, Tibet\, occurred as the result of normal faulting at shallow depth north of the boundary between the Eurasia and Indian plates. \nFocal mechanism solutions indicate that rupture occurred on a roughly north-south striking fault\, dipping moderately to either to the east or to the west. Continental collision between the India and Eurasia plates drives uplift of the Himalayan Mountains. Focal mechanism solutions of this earthquake indicate this event was associated with a normal fault oriented roughly perpendicular to the plate boundary north of the Himalayan Mountains within the Eurasian plate. While commonly plotted as points on maps\, earthquakes of this size are more appropriately described as slip over a larger fault area. Normal faulting events of the size of the January 7\, 2025 earthquake are typically about 45 km by 20 km (length x width). The region near the India and Eurasia plate boundary has a history of large earthquakes. In the past century\, there have been 10 earthquakes of magnitude 6 and greater within 250 km of the January 7\, 2025\, earthquake. DESCRIPTION:New trigger proposed for record-smashing 2022 Tonga eruption: previously unstudied data from a seismic wave\, detected 750 kilometers from the seamount\, may bolster tsunami early-warning systems. \nFifteen minutes before the massive January 2022 eruption of the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai volcano\, a seismic wave was recorded by two distant seismic stations. Now\, researchers argue that similar early signals could be used to warn of other impending eruptions in remote oceanic volcanoes. The researchers propose that the seismic wave was caused by a fracture in a weak area of oceanic crust beneath the volcano’s caldera wall. That fracture allowed seawater and magma to pour into and mix together in the space above the volcano’s subsurface magma chamber\, explosively kickstarting the eruption. The research was published in Geophysical Research Letters\, an open-access AGU journal that publishes high-impact\, short-format reports with immediate implications spanning all Earth and space sciences. The results build on the researchers’ previous work monitoring remote volcanoes. DESCRIPTION:Starting from late September 2024\, Ethiopia has experienced series of earthquakes ranging from 4.8 to 5.8 Richter magnitude scale with initial epicenter from Afar Region‘s Awash Fentale and spread across much of central Ethiopia. \nOn 6 October 2024\, a series of earthquakes with 4.9-magnitude tremor occurred starting to Afar Region‘s Awash Fentale area and spread into Oromia Region\, causing widespread concern. The epicenter was about 23 km northeast of Awash as the tremor occurred at the depth of 10 km and the shaking was felt across central Ethiopia. Over 30 homes collapsed in Afar while thousands fled to neighboring area as refuge. Pubic officials responded by shutdown of transportation infrastructure in the tremor zone to investigate the damage and power outages were likely to be measured. On 13 October\, a magnitude of 4.6 quake happened in Oromia Region at around 07:37. The shaking affected throughout central and eastern Ethiopia\, such as southern Afar\, southern Amhara\, and central Oromia regions\, northwestern Somali Region\, and the capital Addis Ababa. Also on 16 October\, an earthquake was observed in Metehara area in Oromia at 23:11 local time with 4.8 magnitude registered. The Volcano Discovery discovered that the tremor struck at the shallow depth of 10 km beneath the Earth surface. The German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) was the first to detail seismic event\, providing crucial data for understanding its effects. According to initial reports\, residents nearby the epicenter were likely saw a quake\, though caused minimal damage. \nOn 29 December\, an earthquake reoccurred in afternoon and until in the morning 5.1 magnitude. DESCRIPTION:Earth may have had a ring during the middle Ordovician\, from ca. 466 Ma\, breakup of an asteroid passing within Earth’s Roche limit likely formed the ring. \nAmong several features preserved is a near-equatorial band of impact craters. Shading of Earth by the ring may have triggered a global icehouse period. The sientists suggested in the report ‘Evidence suggesting that earth had a ring in the Ordovician‘ that a large L chondrite asteroid had a near miss encounter with Earth at ca. 466 Ma\, which caused it to break up as it passed through Earth’s Roche limit. This can explain why sedimentary rocks from this time contain 99 % L chondrite material at abundances 2–3 orders of magnitude above background\, with extremely brief Cosmic-ray Exposure Ages of Meteorites (CRE ages). They have further suggested that the resulting fragments formed a debris ring that decayed over several tens of millions of years resulting in an anomalous spike in impact cratering rate. This hypothesis may explain why all impact structures from this time are located proximal to the equator; impacts from bodies originating in the asteroid belt are expected to be randomly distributed across the globe. We have estimated the probability that this impact structure distribution resulted from random unrelated impactors at 1 in 25 million. DESCRIPTION:De Marsili is de grootste onderwatervulkaan van Europa en ligt in het zuiden van de Tyrreense Zee\, ten noorden van Sicilië. \nHet massief strekt zich uit over 2000 km². De voet ligt 3000 m onder de zeespiegel\, de top 500 m. De vulkaan werd in de jaren 1920 ontdekt en vernoemd naar de Italiaanse wetenschapper Luigi Fernando Marsili. De vulkaan wordt permanent bewaakt met seismograaf en magnetometer omdat een uitbarsting of grote aardverschuiving op de flanken een tsunami kan veroorzaken. \nWat is de activiteitsstatus van Marsili\, de grootste vulkaan in Europa en de Middellandse Zee? Is het waar dat het actief is? Bestaat er een tsunami-gevaar dat verband houdt met het mogelijke uitlokken van een grote aardverschuiving (laterale instorting)? SUMMARY:Ruang vulkaanuitbarsting van april 2024 / Mount Ruang eruption
DESCRIPTION:In april 2024 leidde een reeks uitbarstingen tot de evacuatie van zo’n 800 bewoners van het vulkaaneiland Ruang\, een stratovulkaan in het zuiden van de Sangihe-eilanden in Noord-Sulawesi (Indonesië). \nOp 17 april 2024 besloten de Indonesische autoriteiten de evacuatiezone uit te breiden tot een straal van zes kilometer rond de krater vanwege een verder toename in de vulkanische activiteit. Het Centrum voor Vulkanologie en Geologische Rampenbestrijding van Indonesië (Vulkanologi dan Mitigasi Bencana Geologi\, PVMBG)\, houdt ook rekening met het afbreken en in zee storten van delen van de vulkaan en de daarmee samenhangende kans op tsunamis. Daarom moesten nog eens 1500 mensen\, ook van het nabij gelegen eiland Tagulandang evacueren en nog eens 12.000 bewoners moeten zich voorbereiden op een mogelijke evacuatie. \nDe Ruang heeft een diameter van 4 tot 5 kilometer en vormt het meest zuidelijke vulkaaneiland van de Sangihe-eilandboog. In de krater op de top van de 725 meter hoge vulkaan heeft zich in 1904 een lavakoepel gevormd. Het bevindt zich ten zuidwesten van het grotere eiland Tagulandang\, waarvan het is gescheiden door een nauwe zeestraat van ongeveer een kilometer breed. Het is niet te verwarren met de vulkaan Raung op het Indonesische eiland Java. De Ruang is een actieve vulkaan die in de laatste twee eeuwen zeker twaalf veelal explosieve erupties heeft gehad met een waarde variërend van 1 tot 4 op de vulkanische-explosiviteitsindex (VEI). Deze uitbarstingen gingen vaak gepaard met pyroclastische stromen.
