SUMMARY:Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission
DESCRIPTION:The Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission is a satellite altimeter jointly developed and operated by NASA and CNES\, the French space agency\, in partnership with the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) and UK Space Agency (UKSA). \nThe objectives of the mission are to make the first global survey of the Earth’s surface water\, to observe the fine details of the ocean surface topography\, and to measure how terrestrial surface water bodies change over time. While past satellite missions like the Jason series altimeters (TOPEX/Poseidon\, Jason-1\, Jason-2\, Jason-3) have provided variation in river and lake water surface elevations at select locations\, SWOT will provide the first truly global observations of changing water levels\, stream slopes\, and inundation extents in rivers\, lakes\, and floodplains. In the world’s oceans\, SWOT will observe ocean circulation at unprecedented scales of 15–25 km (9.3–15.5 mi)\, approximately an order of magnitude finer than current satellites. Because it uses wide-swath altimetry technology\, SWOT will almost completely observe the world’s oceans and freshwater bodies with repeated high-resolution elevation measurements\, allowing observations of variations. \nLinks:\nSurface Water and Ocean Topography at NASA.gov \nOcean Surface Topography from Space at NASA.gov \nCnes project Library at CNES.fr \nAVISO+ portal for SWOT

SUMMARY:2025 Afghanistan earthquake / Aardbeving Afghanistan augustus 2025
DESCRIPTION:Klik op afbeelding om te lezen\nOn 31 August 2025\, at 23:47 AFT (19:17 UTC)\, a Mw 6.0 earthquake struck Nangarhar and Kunar provinces in Afghanistan\, near the border with Pakistan. More than 1\,100 people were killed and more than 3\,500 others were injured. \nThe epicenter of the quake was located in Nurgal District\, Kunar Province. It had a hypocenter 8 kilometres (5 miles) beneath the surface\, and the shaking had a maximum Modified Mercalli intensity of IX (Violent) in Nurgal. Several geological and structural factors led to a relatively heavy impact for the earthquake’s relatively moderate size\, with around 3\,000 deaths\, 4\,000 injuries and 8\,000 collapsed homes; almost all of the casualties and destruction occurred in five districts of Kunar Province\, where almost all buildings were damaged or destroyed\, with nearby provinces also suffering damage and casualites. It was the deadliest earthquake to affect Afghanistan since 1998. Another earthquake\, the second within a week\, has hit Afghanistan on Tuesday 02 September as the nation was already reeling from a devastating quake over the weekend. Tuesday’s magnitude 5.2 tremor hit near Jalalabad\, which was also the epicenter of Sunday’s quake. Rescuers are struggling to reach the remote\, mountainous area. Entire villages have been destroyed and it’s feared the death toll could rise further\, with many people feared trapped under the rubble. The largest aftershock measured Mw 5.6\, and struck about 1 km (0.62 mi) northeast of the mainshock at 21:26 AFT on 4 September with a maximum Modified Mercalli intensity of VIII. \nLinks:\nUSGS earthquake catalog \nDodental na de aardbeving in Afghanistan loopt op tot meer dan 1100
