SUMMARY:IceCube Neutrino Observatory
DESCRIPTION:The IceCube Neutrino Observatory (or simply IceCube) is a neutrino observatory constructed at the Amundsen–Scott South Pole Station in Antarctica\, the project is a recognized CERN experiment (RE10). \nIts thousands of sensors are located under the Antarctic ice\, distributed over a cubic kilometre. Similar to its predecessor\, the Antarctic Muon And Neutrino Detector Array (AMANDA)\, IceCube consists of spherical optical sensors called Digital Optical Modules (DOMs)\, each with a photomultiplier tube (PMT) and a single-board data acquisition computer which sends digital data to the counting house on the surface above the array. IceCube was completed on 18 December 2010. DOMs are deployed on strings of 60 modules each at depths between 1\,450 and 2\,450 meters into holes melted in the ice using a hot water drill. IceCube is designed to look for point sources of neutrinos in the teraelectronvolt (TeV) range to explore the highest-energy astrophysical processes. In November 2013 it was announced that IceCube had detected 28 neutrinos that likely originated outside the Solar System. \nLinks:\nIceCube Neutrino Observatory \nIceCube: the coolest way to detect neutrinos (TV The Royal Institution) \nIceCube: the coolest way to detect neutrinos \nANITA experiment \nOur galaxy seen through a new lens: neutrinos detected by IceCube \n[LIVE] Observation of high-energy neutrinos from the Galactic plane

SUMMARY:Year of Quantum Science and Technology
DESCRIPTION:The International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ) recognizes 100 years since the initial development of quantum mechanics and is a United Nations observance that aims to highlight the contributions of quantum science and practical applications of quantum technology. \nThe mission of the IYQ is to use the occasion of 100 years of quantum mechanics in 2025 to help raise public awareness of the importance and impact of quantum science and applications on all aspects of life. Anyone\, anywhere can participate in IYQ by helping others to learn more about quantum on this centennial occasion or simply taking the time to learn more about it themselves. No One Owns Quantum Science No individual\, society\, country\, institution\, or discipline can claim ownership of the past or future of quantum science; it is knowledge that should be free to all. IYQ recognizes those who put effort into studying\, developing\, investigating\, using\, and teaching quantum science and technology\, while seeking to solicit and answer questions from anyone who wants to learn more about it. Those who have insights into the beauty\, power\, and importance of quantum science and technology should use IYQ as a moment to share these insights with people who are less familiar with quantum. IYQ asks everyone to make an effort to reach out to people with different cultural backgrounds and aesthetic sensibilities. \nIf you’re inclined to present or seek out a unified story\, make note of where others dissent. If you’re inclined to highlight disputes and controversies\, recognize where there is consensus. If you’re inclined to promote or to understand established knowledge\, make note of what is still unknown. Manythings have been and will be said about quantum science and technology that are untrue or misleading. The remedy for these statements is more quantum speech. All people proceed from learning simple\, sometimes incorrect stories to deeper\, more nuanced ones. IYQ aims to meet people where they are in their understanding and help them to construct pathways for this journey. There is often a disparity between how we hope scientific inquiry is conducted and how it is actually practiced by individuals and institutions. IYQ is an opportunity to communicate and model the ideals of how science should be practiced in the hope that future generations will take up these values. Pride in the past and optimism about the future are welcome\, and stories often have to be simplified out of necessity\, but IYQ should always aim to foreground honesty about the past and future of quantum science and technology. If quantum has brought joy to your life\, share this joy with others. \nLinks:\nYear of Quantum Science and Technology \nKwantummechanica \nOpening Ceremony of the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology

SUMMARY:Nobel Prize in Physics 2025
DESCRIPTION:The Nobel Prize in Physics 2025 was awarded to John Clarke\, Michel H. Devoret and John M. Martinis “for the discovery of macroscopic quantum mechanical tunnelling and energy quantisation in an electric circuit.” \nA major question in physics is the maximum size of a system that can demonstrate quantum mechanical effects. This year’s Nobel Prize laureates conducted experiments with an electrical circuit in which they demonstrated both quantum mechanical tunnelling and quantised energy levels in a system big enough to be held in the hand. \nLinks:\nNobel Prize in Physics 2025 \nThings Going Thru Walls? SUMMARY:Hendrik de Waard Lecture | Redefining Time Through Nuclear Physics
DESCRIPTION:In this Hendrik de Waard lecture\, experimental physicist Kjeld Beeks shows how cutting-edge nuclear research is redefining the present and shaping the future\, while reflecting on its societal and ethical implications. \nFrom GPS to quantum experiments\, precise timekeeping drives modern life. Atomic clocks are already extraordinarily accurate\, yet researchers are now aiming higher with a nuclear clock that measures time using the motion of an atomic nucleus. The isotope thorium-229\, uniquely possessing a laser-accessible low-energy state\, lies at the centre of this effort. When embedded in transparent crystals and probed with vacuum-ultraviolet light\, this nuclear transition provides a reference less sensitive to environmental noise than electronic transitions. Current work focuses on engineering host materials\, controlling and quenching excitations\, and understanding how crystal defects shape nuclear behaviour; effectively building a nuclear clock. This breakthrough could enable innovations in navigation\, sensing\, and communications\, as well as unlock new insights in fields such as relativity\, dark matter\, and fundamental constants. Yet\, nuclear science unfolds within a societal landscape shaped by both benefits and controversies. \nLinks:\nRedefining Time Through Nuclear Physics

SUMMARY:Dark Matter Day 2025
DESCRIPTION:On and around October 31st\, the world will celebrate the historic hunt for the unseen—something that scientists refer to as dark matter. \nSince 2017\, more than 350 global\, regional\, and local events have been held on and around October 31 by institutions and individuals looking to engage the public in discussions about what we already know about dark matter and the many experiments seeking to solve its mysteries. Scientists believe that dark matter\, which we have so far only detected through its gravity-based effects in space\, makes up about a quarter (26.8 percent) of the total mass and energy of the universe\, and something that is driving the universe’s accelerating expansion—which scientists call dark energy—accounts for another 68.3 percent. The ordinary matter\, like stars and planets and galaxies\, makes up just 4.9 percent of the total mass and energy of the universe. \nLinks:\nDark Matter Day \nDiscover the Mysteries of the Universe and the Brain

SUMMARY:Babelsberger Sternennächte – Die Odyssee eines kosmischen Photons (TV webcast)

SUMMARY:Tunable Einstein-Bohr Recoiling-Slit Gedankenexperiment at the Quantum Limit - publication
DESCRIPTION:The double-slit experiment demonstrates the quantum nature of reality\nA groundbreaking experiment recreates Einstein’s 1927 thought challenge\, confirming fundamental quantum principle. \nIn the study ‘Tunable Einstein-Bohr Recoiling-Slit Gedankenexperiment at the Quantum Limit‘ that brings a definitive close to one of the most famous debates in modern physics\, a team of Chinese scientists has experimentally validated Niels Bohr’s core quantum principle\, demonstrating that a particle’s path and its wave-like behavior are fundamentally mutually exclusive – a notion Albert Einstein famously resisted. The research\, led by Professor Pan Jianwei\, a pioneering quantum physicist often referred to as China’s “father of quantum\,” and his team at the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC)\, successfully recreated and executed a thought experiment proposed by Einstein nearly a century ago. Their findings provide strong evidence that Bohr’s interpretation of quantum mechanics accurately describes the nature of reality at the subatomic level. The dispute dates back to the 1927 Solvay Conference in Brussels\, where the foundations of quantum mechanics were being forged. Einstein\, deeply skeptical of the theory’s probabilistic and seemingly incomplete nature\, challenged Bohr’s concept of “complementarity.” Bohr argued that quantum objects possess complementary properties\, such as being a particle (with a definite path) and a wave (producing an interference pattern)\, but that these properties cannot be observed simultaneously. The very act of measurement\, Bohr claimed\, forces the object into one state or the other. Einstein devised a clever thought experiment\, a modification of the classic double-slit experiment\, aiming to prove that a sufficiently precise measurement could\, in theory\, reveal both the particle’s trajectory and its wave interference pattern\, thereby contradicting Bohr’s principle. \nFor decades\, Einstein’s challenge remained a theoretical puzzle. The USTC team has now turned it into a physical reality. They constructed an advanced apparatus of extreme sensitivity\, capable of detecting the minuscule momentum transfer of a single photon. By meticulously carrying out the experiment\, the researchers demonstrated that any attempt to determine which path a particle takes through the apparatus inevitably disturbs the system\, destroying the delicate wave interference pattern. Conversely\, observing the clear interference pattern necessitates abandoning all information about the individual particle’s path. “The results are unequivocal\,” the research indicates. “They confirm Bohr’s original assertion that these dual properties are complementary and cannot be observed concurrently.” This finding underscores a fundamental limit to measurement and observation inherent in the quantum world – a limit Bohr embraced but Einstein found deeply unsatisfying\, prompting his famous remark\, “God does not play dice with the universe.” This experimental validation is seen as a significant milestone. It conclusively settles the theoretical disagreement in favor of Bohr’s Copenhagen interpretation\, confirming that the paradoxical behavior of quantum particles is not due to experimental shortcomings but is a core feature of reality itself. The work not only honors a century of philosophical and scientific inquiry but also demonstrates the advanced capabilities of China’s research teams in pushing the boundaries of fundamental physics. By answering a question posed by Einstein himself\, Professor Pan’s team has provided a crucial empirical cornerstone for our understanding of the quantum realm. \nLinks:\nChinese Physicists Settle Einstein and Bohr’s Quantum Debate \nQuantum experiment settles a century-old row between Einstein and Bohr

SUMMARY:Isaac Newton – geboortedag (1643) 2026
DESCRIPTION:Isaac Newton (Woolsthorpe-by-Colsterworth\, 4 januari 1643 – Kensington\, 31 maart 1727) was een Engelse natuurkundige\, wiskundige\, astronoom\, natuurfilosoof\, alchemist\, officieel muntmeester en theoloog.

SUMMARY:Measurement of a lithium plume from the uncontrolled re-entry of a Falcon 9 rocket - publication
DESCRIPTION:A 10-fold enhancement of lithium atoms was detected at 96 km altitude by a resonance lidar at Kühlungsborn\, Germany\, approximately 20 hours after the uncontrolled re-entry of a Falcon 9 upper stage. \nThe upper-atmospheric extension of the ICOsahedral Nonhydrostatic (ICON – a unified modeling system for global numerical weather prediction and climate studies) general circulation model\, nudged to ECMWF\, was used to calculate winds. Backwards trajectories\, including wind variability as measured by radar\, traced air masses to the Falcon 9 re-entry path at 100 km altitude\, west of Ireland. The study ‘Measurement of a lithium plume from the uncontrolled re-entry of a Falcon 9 rocket‘ presents the first measurement of upper-atmospheric pollution resulting from space debris re-entry and the first observational evidence that the ablation of space debris can be detected by ground-based lidar. The analysis of geomagnetic conditions\, atmospheric dynamics\, and ionospheric measurements supports the claim that the enhancement was not of natural origin. Our findings demonstrate that identifying pollutants and tracing them to their sources is achievable\, with significant implications for monitoring and mitigating space emissions in the atmosphere. \nLinks:\nMetals from spacecraft reentry in stratospheric aerosol particles – publication

SUMMARY:BASE experiment at CERN succeeds in transporting antimatter - publication
DESCRIPTION:The experiment successfully transported a trap filled with antiprotons across CERN’s main site\, a remarkable first step towards delivering antimatter to other European laboratories. \na team of scientists from the BASE experiment at CERN successfully transported a trap filled with antiprotons in a truck across the Laboratory’s main site. The team managed to accumulate a cloud of 92 antiprotons in an innovative portable cryogenic Penning trap\, then disconnect it from the experimental facility\, load it onto a truck and continue experiment operation after transport. This is a remarkable achievement\, given that antimatter is very difficult to preserve\, as it annihilates upon contact with matter. This world premiere is a test\, the ultimate aim being to transport antiprotons to other European laboratories\, such as Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf (HHU)\, where very-high-precision measurements of the antiproton properties could be performed. Antimatter is a naturally occurring class of particles that is almost identical to ordinary matter except that the electric charge and magnetic moment are reversed. According to the laws of physics\, the Big Bang should have produced equal amounts of matter and antimatter. These equal-but-opposite particles would have quickly annihilated each other\, leaving an empty Universe. However\, our Universe contains predominantly matter\, and this imbalance has baffled scientists for decades. Physicists suspect that there are hidden differences that may explain why matter survived and antimatter all but disappeared. \nLinks:\nBASE experiment at CERN succeeds in transporting antimatter \nBASE-STEP to attempt to move antimatter across several kilometres for the first time

SUMMARY:Satellite quantification of enhanced methane oxidation applied to the stratospheric plume following Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha’apai eruption - publicatie / publication
