SUMMARY:IceCube Neutrino Observatory
DESCRIPTION:The IceCube Neutrino Observatory (or simply IceCube) is a neutrino observatory constructed at the Amundsen–Scott South Pole Station in Antarctica\, the project is a recognized CERN experiment (RE10). \nIts thousands of sensors are located under the Antarctic ice\, distributed over a cubic kilometre. Similar to its predecessor\, the Antarctic Muon And Neutrino Detector Array (AMANDA)\, IceCube consists of spherical optical sensors called Digital Optical Modules (DOMs)\, each with a photomultiplier tube (PMT) and a single-board data acquisition computer which sends digital data to the counting house on the surface above the array. IceCube was completed on 18 December 2010. DOMs are deployed on strings of 60 modules each at depths between 1\,450 and 2\,450 meters into holes melted in the ice using a hot water drill. IceCube is designed to look for point sources of neutrinos in the teraelectronvolt (TeV) range to explore the highest-energy astrophysical processes. In November 2013 it was announced that IceCube had detected 28 neutrinos that likely originated outside the Solar System. \nLinks:\nIceCube Neutrino Observatory \nIceCube: the coolest way to detect neutrinos (TV The Royal Institution) \nIceCube: the coolest way to detect neutrinos \nANITA experiment \nOur galaxy seen through a new lens: neutrinos detected by IceCube \n[LIVE] Observation of high-energy neutrinos from the Galactic plane

SUMMARY:Manifest tegen de uitverkoop van wetenschap

SUMMARY:Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission
DESCRIPTION:The Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission is a satellite altimeter jointly developed and operated by NASA and CNES\, the French space agency\, in partnership with the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) and UK Space Agency (UKSA). \nThe objectives of the mission are to make the first global survey of the Earth’s surface water\, to observe the fine details of the ocean surface topography\, and to measure how terrestrial surface water bodies change over time. While past satellite missions like the Jason series altimeters (TOPEX/Poseidon\, Jason-1\, Jason-2\, Jason-3) have provided variation in river and lake water surface elevations at select locations\, SWOT will provide the first truly global observations of changing water levels\, stream slopes\, and inundation extents in rivers\, lakes\, and floodplains. In the world’s oceans\, SWOT will observe ocean circulation at unprecedented scales of 15–25 km (9.3–15.5 mi)\, approximately an order of magnitude finer than current satellites. Because it uses wide-swath altimetry technology\, SWOT will almost completely observe the world’s oceans and freshwater bodies with repeated high-resolution elevation measurements\, allowing observations of variations. \nLinks:\nSurface Water and Ocean Topography at NASA.gov \nOcean Surface Topography from Space at NASA.gov \nCnes project Library at CNES.fr \nAVISO+ portal for SWOT

SUMMARY:Water op de Kaart

SUMMARY:Waterdier van het jaar 2025 : eendagsvlieg
SUMMARY:Year of Quantum Science and Technology
DESCRIPTION:The International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ) recognizes 100 years since the initial development of quantum mechanics and is a United Nations observance that aims to highlight the contributions of quantum science and practical applications of quantum technology. \nThe mission of the IYQ is to use the occasion of 100 years of quantum mechanics in 2025 to help raise public awareness of the importance and impact of quantum science and applications on all aspects of life. Anyone\, anywhere can participate in IYQ by helping others to learn more about quantum on this centennial occasion or simply taking the time to learn more about it themselves. No One Owns Quantum Science No individual\, society\, country\, institution\, or discipline can claim ownership of the past or future of quantum science; it is knowledge that should be free to all. IYQ recognizes those who put effort into studying\, developing\, investigating\, using\, and teaching quantum science and technology\, while seeking to solicit and answer questions from anyone who wants to learn more about it. Those who have insights into the beauty\, power\, and importance of quantum science and technology should use IYQ as a moment to share these insights with people who are less familiar with quantum. IYQ asks everyone to make an effort to reach out to people with different cultural backgrounds and aesthetic sensibilities. \nIf you’re inclined to present or seek out a unified story\, make note of where others dissent. If you’re inclined to highlight disputes and controversies\, recognize where there is consensus. If you’re inclined to promote or to understand established knowledge\, make note of what is still unknown. Manythings have been and will be said about quantum science and technology that are untrue or misleading. The remedy for these statements is more quantum speech. All people proceed from learning simple\, sometimes incorrect stories to deeper\, more nuanced ones. IYQ aims to meet people where they are in their understanding and help them to construct pathways for this journey. There is often a disparity between how we hope scientific inquiry is conducted and how it is actually practiced by individuals and institutions. IYQ is an opportunity to communicate and model the ideals of how science should be practiced in the hope that future generations will take up these values. Pride in the past and optimism about the future are welcome\, and stories often have to be simplified out of necessity\, but IYQ should always aim to foreground honesty about the past and future of quantum science and technology. If quantum has brought joy to your life\, share this joy with others. \nLinks:\nYear of Quantum Science and Technology \nKwantummechanica \nOpening Ceremony of the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology

SUMMARY:Landelijke kikkerdriltelling 2025
\nLinks:\nLandelijke kikkerdriltelling \n#WorldFrogDay Wereld Kikkerdag 2025

SUMMARY:“Cool” years are now hotter than the “warm” years of the past: tracking global temperatures through El Niño and La Niña - publication
DESCRIPTION:In 2024\, the world was around 1.5°C warmer than it was in pre-industrial times. You can see this in the chart below\, which shows average warming relative to average temperatures from 1861 to 1890. \nTemperatures\, as defined by “climate”\, are based on temperatures over longer periods of time — typically 20-to-30-year averages — rather than single-year data points. But even when based on longer-term averages\, the world has still warmed by around 1.3°C. But you’ll also notice\, in the chart\, that temperatures haven’t increased linearly. There are spikes and dips along the long-run trend. Many of these short-term fluctuations are caused by “ENSO” — the El Niño-Southern Oscillation — a natural climate cycle caused by changes in wind patterns and sea surface temperatures in the Pacific Ocean. While it’s caused by patterns in the Pacific Ocean and most strongly affects countries in the tropics\, it also impacts global temperatures and climate. There are two key phases of this cycle: the La Niña phase\, which tends to cause cooler global temperatures\, and the El Niño phase\, which brings hotter conditions. The world cycles between El Niño and La Niña phases every two to seven years. There are also “neutral” periods between these phases where the world is not in either extreme. The zig-zag trend of global temperatures becomes understandable when you are taking the phases of the ENSO cycles into account. In the chart below\, we see the data on global temperatures\, but the line is now colored by the ENSO phase at that time. The El Niño (warm phase) is shown in orange and red\, and the La Niña (cold phase) is shown in blue. You can see that temperatures often reach a short-term peak during warm El Niño years before falling back slightly as the world moves into La Niña years\, shown in blue. \n\nLinks:\n“Cool” years are now hotter than the “warm” years of the past: tracking global temperatures through El Niño and La Niña

DESCRIPTION:The Bellingcat Open Source Challenge. \nAt the end of 2024\, Bellingcat released a set of online challenges that we hoped would test the skills of our audience and the wider open source investigator community. Bellingcat wanted the challenges to be educational\, to encourage people to carry out responsible online research and\, most importantly\, to be fun! Around 35\,000 people took part\, far more than we expected. Some produced blogs about how they attacked the challenges\, while GeoGuessr expert Rainbolt posted a video where he tried to solve five challenges in under 30 minutes. Bellingcat has now decided to make these challenges a regular thing – a monthly thing\, to be precise. On March 3\, 2025 Bellingcat launched the first set\, which you can find here. They are also introducing a monthly Bellingcat Challenge newsletter that will announce when new challenges are launched\, provide detailed answers to the previous month’s questions and highlight the most creative and cool ways that people came to their conclusions. Each monthly challenge will consist of five open source research questions\, all centred around a single theme. The first question will be published on the first Monday of every month\, with a new challenge released each day that week. So\, by the end of the first week of every month\, you should have five open source challenges to keep you busy. The challenges will\, among other things\, test your geolocation\, chronolocation\, shiptracking\, satellite imagery analysis\, image verification and flight tracking skills. Bellingcat Open Source Challenge wants to include as many open source research techniques as possible. Anyone is encouraged taking part to join our Discord server\, where staff and members of the community will be sharing useful tips and techniques in the #BellingcatChallenge channel. On March 12\, at 17:00 CET\, there will be a live broadcast on the Bellingcat Patreon channel where Bellingcat founder\, Eliot Higgins will go through the challenges. \nLinks:\nThe Bellingcat Open Source Challenge is Back
