SUMMARY:Natuurlijk kan het slimmer - publicatie

SUMMARY:The 2026 state of the climate report: challenges and opportunities - publication
DESCRIPTION:Researchers tracked 16 “planetary vital signs” in their analysis. Click image for larger version. Credit: Ripple et al. 2026\n2026 State of the Climate Report shows a planet reaching its limits: Of the 16 climate indicators analyzed\, seven showed record extremes. \nEarth’s climate system is moving deeper into uncharted territory. Scientists present the 2026 update of planetary vital signs that track the state of Earth’s climate system\, alongside indicators of the human activities driving ongoing change. Of 16 climate-related indicators\, seven are currently at record extremes. Several indicators also show evidence of accelerating trends or abrupt shifts\, raising concerns about increasing climate instability\, interacting feedbacks\, and the growing risk of crossing critical tipping points. Human activities\, particularly fossil fuel combustion\, remain the dominant drivers of these changes. Despite the worsening trends\, encouraging signs of societal changes are emerging\, including the rapid expansion of renewable electricity and battery storage\, although progress remains far below the scale and speed needed to stabilize Earth’s climate system. Rapid reductions in greenhouse gas emissions\, effective adaptation\, ecosystem protection\, and transformative societal change remain essential to reducing climate risks and securing a more resilient and sustainable future. \nLinks:\n2026 State of the Climate Report Shows a Planet Reaching Its Limits

SUMMARY:Heat-related urban mortality attributable to human-induced climate change in Europe in summer 2026 - publication
DESCRIPTION:Summer 2026 was characterised by a succession of extreme heatwaves with severe impacts recorded on public health. \nResearchers from Imperial and London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine analysed expected heat mortality in 854 urban areas across 30 countries (EU-27\, UK\, Switzerland and Norway) during June-August 2026. Accepted for publication in the journal Nature Health\, the paper ‘Heat-related urban mortality attributable to human-induced climate change in Europe in summer 2026‘ builds on the team’s work comparing the summers of 2000-2025. \nLinks:\nHeat-related urban mortality attributable to human-induced climate change in Europe in summer 2026 \nEU research and innovation support Europe’s new Framework for Climate Resilience
