DESCRIPTION:The IceCube Neutrino Observatory (or simply IceCube) is a neutrino observatory constructed at the Amundsen–Scott South Pole Station in Antarctica\, the project is a recognized CERN experiment (RE10). \nIts thousands of sensors are located under the Antarctic ice\, distributed over a cubic kilometre. Similar to its predecessor\, the Antarctic Muon And Neutrino Detector Array (AMANDA)\, IceCube consists of spherical optical sensors called Digital Optical Modules (DOMs)\, each with a photomultiplier tube (PMT) and a single-board data acquisition computer which sends digital data to the counting house on the surface above the array. IceCube was completed on 18 December 2010. DOMs are deployed on strings of 60 modules each at depths between 1\,450 and 2\,450 meters into holes melted in the ice using a hot water drill. DESCRIPTION:The Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) mission is a satellite altimeter jointly developed and operated by NASA and CNES\, the French space agency\, in partnership with the Canadian Space Agency (CSA) and UK Space Agency (UKSA). \nThe objectives of the mission are to make the first global survey of the Earth’s surface water\, to observe the fine details of the ocean surface topography\, and to measure how terrestrial surface water bodies change over time. While past satellite missions like the Jason series altimeters (TOPEX/Poseidon\, Jason-1\, Jason-2\, Jason-3) have provided variation in river and lake water surface elevations at select locations\, SWOT will provide the first truly global observations of changing water levels\, stream slopes\, and inundation extents in rivers\, lakes\, and floodplains. In the world’s oceans\, SWOT will observe ocean circulation at unprecedented scales of 15–25 km (9.3–15.5 mi)\, approximately an order of magnitude finer than current satellites. DESCRIPTION:De campagne ‘Water op de kaart’ van het Nederlands Instituut voor Ecologie (NIOO-KNAW) en de stichting Natuur & Milieu moet een beeld gaan geven van de kwaliteit van water rond een riooloverstort. \nZo’n 40 burgerwetenschappers verspreid over Nederland gaan in hun eigen buurt monsters nemen van de zogenaamde kleine oppervlaktewateren: de sloten of vijvers om de hoek. Dat water blijkt namelijk van niet zo’n goeie kwaliteit. Bij hevige plensbuien\, die in toenemende mate voorkomen\, komt het riool vol met water te zitten en stroomt het over naar omliggende sloten en plassen. Daar zit het probleem. Door die overstort komen stoffen uit het riool als medicijnresten en poep en plas in het oppervlaktewater terecht. DESCRIPTION:The International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ) recognizes 100 years since the initial development of quantum mechanics and is a United Nations observance that aims to highlight the contributions of quantum science and practical applications of quantum technology. \nThe mission of the IYQ is to use the occasion of 100 years of quantum mechanics in 2025 to help raise public awareness of the importance and impact of quantum science and applications on all aspects of life. Anyone\, anywhere can participate in IYQ by helping others to learn more about quantum on this centennial occasion or simply taking the time to learn more about it themselves. No One Owns Quantum Science No individual\, society\, country\, institution\, or discipline can claim ownership of the past or future of quantum science; it is knowledge that should be free to all. IYQ recognizes those who put effort into studying\, developing\, investigating\, using\, and teaching quantum science and technology\, while seeking to solicit and answer questions from anyone who wants to learn more about it. Those who have insights into the beauty\, power\, and importance of quantum science and technology should use IYQ as a moment to share these insights with people who are less familiar with quantum. IYQ asks everyone to make an effort to reach out to people with different cultural backgrounds and aesthetic sensibilities. \nIf you’re inclined to present or seek out a unified story\, make note of where others dissent. DESCRIPTION:Lewotobi is a twin volcano located in the southeastern part of the island of Flores\, Indonesia\, it has two peaks; the Lewotobi Laki-laki (Male Lewotobi) and Lewotobi Perempuan (Female Lewotobi) stratovolcanoes\, the more active Lewotobi Laki-laki is about 2.1 km northwest of the taller Lewotobi Perempuan. \nOn 21 March\, Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted\, sending ash clouds over 8 km high. Authorities raised the alert to the highest level\, and Jetstar canceled some flights to Bali. The eruption followed smaller ones since 13 March. One person was injured during the evacuations\, although the details reported were unclear. Bali airport remained open\, but seven international flights were canceled. The geological agency warned of lava floods and continued activity. Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted again on 18 May\, prompting authorities to raise Indonesia’s highest volcanic alert level. Lewotobi Laki-laki erupted on 17 June\, sending ash clouds 11 km high\, prompting authorities to raise Indonesia’s highest volcanic alert level again\, with a plume visible from a distance of 90 km to 150 km. SUMMARY:Onderzoek naar het voedingsgedrag van wolven (Canis lupus) in Nederland in 2023 - publicatie
DESCRIPTION:Wolven in Nederland eten vooral wilde hoefdieren zoals reeën\, wilde zwijnen en edelherten maar ook natuurgrazers in wildarme gebieden. \nOnder meer in Drenthe\, voeden wolven zich ook met in het wild levende runderen die worden ingezet voor natuurbeheer. Dat blijkt uit een onderzoek naar de ontlasting van de wolven in ons land. Het onderzoek naar het voedingspatroon van de wolven in Nederland\, uitgevoerd door het Centrum voor Milieuwetenschappen van de Universiteit Leiden\, Stichting Leo\, Universiteit Antwerpen en de Zoogdiervereniging\, bracht het voedingspatroon van wolven in 2023 gedetailleerd in kaart. Uit de resultaten blijkt dat op de Veluwe\, wilde zwijnen (aanwezig in 62% van de onderzochte uitwerpselen)\, reeën (56%) en edelherten (32%) de voornaamste prooidieren zijn. In Drenthe\, waar vrijwel alleen reeën in het wild voorkomen\, voeden wolven zich naast reeën (aangetoond in 63% van de uitwerpselen) ook met natuurrunderen (43%) die ingezet worden voor natuurbeheer\, en schapen (10%). Het onderzoek is een langdurige studie die in ieder geval loopt tot en met 2025. De wetenschappelijke bevindingen kunnen bijdragen aan het maatschappelijk debat\, maar ook aan de onderbouwing van een beter beleid voor wolven in Nederland. Er is nu voor het eerst objectieve informatie over het wolvendieet in Nederland. SUMMARY:The MICrONS Project : anatomical images of individual cells in mouse visual cortex - publications
DESCRIPTION:The MICrONS Project published package of papers about an unprecedented dataset of high resolution anatomical images of individual cells in mouse visual cortex\, mapped on to their responses. \nThis integrated view of function and structure lays a foundation for discovering the computational bases of cortical circuits. A cubic millimetre might not sound like much — roughly the size of a grain of sand — but to neuroscientists\, it is enormous. One cubic millimetre of a mammalian brain contains tens of thousands of neurons with hundreds of millions of connections\, or synapses\, between them. For most of the history of neuroscience\, tracing the detailed connectivity (or connectomics) and measuring activity of neurons at such a large scale was unthinkable. Instead\, neuroscientists worked at more manageable scales — even single pairs of connected cells can provide important information\, especially when accrued over hundreds of labs doing similar experiments. Nevertheless\, the goal of studying millimetre-scale volumes of brain in such detail started to come closer after a period of intense focus on new neuroscience technologies in the 1990s and 2000s. This period led to tools to label\, trace and image the activity of neurons in increasingly large populations. However\, the fundamental problem of scale remained. A complete reconstruction of a cubic millimetre of neurons requires roughly a petabyte of data. Tracing the intricate branches of the neurons is far too time consuming to do by hand\, so improved tools for automation were needed. A parallel revolution in computing — increased computing power and advances in machine learning and artificial intelligence — suddenly made those challenges tractable. This brings us to today’s announcement of the MICrONS project. The team made and designed tools to allow dense neural reconstruction at scale. The resulting data set includes 200\,000 cells and 523 million connections in the primary visual cortex and surrounding areas of a mouse. A unique contribution of the MICrONS project is that it also includes in vivo functional data from around 75\,000 of the neurons. Even landmark connectomics studies\, such as FlyWire\, include only the anatomical data. The date of 10th April has no recognised international day and we propose this date for the following reason: On 10 April 1815 Gunung (Mount) Tambora in Indonesia erupted and generated massive pyroclastic flows and tsunami that instantly killed 10\,000 locals\, who were unaware of the danger. The massive eruption injected huge amounts of aerosols into the Earth’s stratosphere\, causing a global haze which reflected back the incoming sunlight and cooled our planet by half a degree (celsius). This affected the planet’s climate for three years\, causing crop failure and famine\, resulting in up to 60\,000 more human deaths globally – as well as affecting animals\, fauna and agriculture. SUMMARY:Biomass : ESA's forest mission
DESCRIPTION:Biomass is an Earth observing satellite planned for launch by the European Space Agency (ESA) on 29 April 2025 from Kourou\, French Guiana on a Vega C launch vehicle\, the mission will provide the first comprehensive measurements of global forest biomass. \nIt is meant to last for five years\, monitoring at least eight growth cycles in the world’s forests. The Biomass satellite is part of ESA’s Living Planet Programme\, which consists of Earth observation missions. Its initial launch date was set to 2020\, but that has since been delayed to 2025. The entire cost of the mission was placed at around 400 million euros. The main scientific instrument aboard Biomass will be a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) operating at 435 MHz.
