DESCRIPTION:The Dutch city of Amsterdam thought it could break a decade-long trend of implementing discriminatory algorithms\, its failure raises the question: can these programs ever be fair? \n\nThere’s an ongoing debate about whether algorithms can ever be fair when tasked with making decisions that shape people’s lives. Over the past several years of efforts to use artificial intelligence in this way\, examples of collateral damage have mounted: nonwhite job applicants weeded out of job application pools in the US\, families being wrongly flagged for child abuse investigations in Japan\, and low-income residents being denied food subsidies in India. Proponents of these assessment systems argue that they can create more efficient public services by doing more with less and\, in the case of welfare systems specifically\, reclaim money that is allegedly being lost from the public purse. In practice\, many were poorly designed from the start. They sometimes factor in personal characteristics in a way that leads to discrimination\, and sometimes they have been deployed without testing for bias or effectiveness. In general\, they offer few options for people to challenge—or even understand—the automated actions directly affecting how they live. \nWhen Amsterdam set out to create an AI model to detect potential welfare fraud\, officials thought it could break a decade-plus trend of discriminatory algorithms that had harmed people all over the world. City officials in the welfare department believed they could build technology that would prevent fraud while protecting citizens’ rights. They followed these emerging best practices and invested a vast amount of time and money in a project that eventually processed live welfare applications. But in their pilot\, they found that the system they’d developed was still not fair and effective. Why? Lighthouse Reports\, MIT Technology Review\, and the Dutch newspaper Trouw have gained unprecedented access to the system to try to find out. Jim Cox van cybersecuritybedrijf Proofpoint deelt zijn tips met ons. Hij schreef ze speciaal voor thuiswerkers\, maar ze gelden net zo goed voor de particuliere gebruiker. \nTips voor wachtwoordbeheer\n• Wijzig wachtwoorden regelmatig en hergebruik ze nooit. Als je denkt dat er een kans is dat je data gevaar loopt\, neem deze voorzorgsmaatregel dan direct en stel je manager op de hoogte van het beveiligingsprobleem.\n• Schrijf nooit je wachtwoorden ergens op. Maar als je je wachtwoord dan toch moet opschrijven\, zorg er dan in ieder geval voor dat deze niet zichtbaar is.\n• Gebruik een wachtwoordmanager om willekeurige wachtwoorden te maken die veilig worden opgeslagen\, gecodeerd en toegankelijk zijn op alle persoonlijke apparaten. Dergelijke software is relatief eenvoudig te implementeren en beschikbaar als een cloud-gebaseerde dienst\, waardoor het een verstandige investering is voor bedrijven\n• Implementeer\, indien beschikbaar\, tweefactor-authenticatie op accounts en apparaten om apparaten verder te beveiligen. Dit is vooral belangrijk voor personeel met toegang tot gevoelige informatie. \nTips voor het aanmaken van wachtwoorden\n• Wachtwoorden moeten uit ten minste 12 tekens bestaan\, met minimaal twee of drie verschillende soorten tekens op willekeurige plaatsen. Vermijd hoofdletters aan het begin en cijfers of symbolen aan het eind. Op 24 januari 2024 was de beurswaarde US$ 3004 miljard en was het de tweede onderneming die de grens van 3 biljoen dollar overschreed\, na Apple Inc.. Op 25 april 2019 passeerde het\, na Apple en Amazon.com\, als derde de grens van 1 biljoen dollar. Het eerste door Microsoft ontwikkelde product was een BASIC–interpreter voor de Altair 8800 (een zelfbouwcomputer voor hobbyisten). Een overweldigend succes was het besturingssysteem MS-DOS waarmee het bedrijf in het midden van de jaren 80 de pc-markt domineerde. De populariteit van MS-DOS en daarna Microsoft Windows maakte drie medewerkers miljardairs en 12.000 miljonairs. In 2016 was Microsoft dominant met besturingssystemen voor desktop-pc’s en de bundels kantoorsoftware van Microsoft Office. Het bedrijf ontwikkelde ook nog diverse softwarepakketten voor werkstations en servers\, en werd met Bing actief op de zoekmachinemarkt\, de computerspelindustrie (met de Xbox-\, Xbox 360– en Xbox One–spelconsoles)\, de markt voor online-diensten (via Skype) en mobiele telefoons (met Windows Phone). Ook de markt voor de verkoop van hardware op tabletgebied werd betreden met de Microsoft Surface. Inzichten en succesfactoren van de proeftuinen met het Digitaal Meedoen pakket”\, blijkt dat dankzij digitaal mee kunnen doen achterstanden kunnen worden ingelopen: Met passende ondersteuning\, een gereduceerd internettarief en een apparaat (laptop of tablet) kan de onafhankelijkheid en zelfredzaamheid worden vergroot. \nOnderzoekers van het Centrum voor Digitale Inclusie hebben onderzocht hoe financieel kwetsbare mensen in Nederland meer kunnen deelnemen aan de digitale samenleving. Door middel van een proeftuin onder 100 deelnemers is gekeken naar toegang tot de digitale wereld voor groepen die geen of beperkt internet hebben. Het onderzoeksrapport laat de noodzaak zien van toegang tot het internet en digitale middelen om aangesloten te blijven bij de maatschappij. De resultaten bieden concrete aanbevelingen voor overheden\, beleidsmakers en organisaties om toegang tot de digitale wereld in Nederland verder te verbeteren. In Nederland hebben 270.000 (1\,5%) mensen thuis geen toegang tot internet om uiteenlopende redenen\, ook een eigen laptop is niet vanzelfsprekend. Mensen zonder internettoegang\, middelen en/of digitale vaardigheden\, dreigen achterstand op te lopen bij zaken als administratie\, onderwijs en zorg. Zij gaan letterlijk en figuurlijk de grenzen over om op die manier buitenlandse democratieën te ondermijnen. Buiten hun normale internetcensuur praktijken zijn zij erg druk met mensen tegen elkaar uitspelen door middel van desinformatie en nepnieuws door op bijvoorbeeld Facebook te plaatsen. Helaas zien sommige mensen het nieuws dat op Facebook staat als dé waarheid. Vaak is dat ook de enige bron waar mensen hun nieuws vandaan halen. En daar loert het gevaar. Blijf kritisch is het devies. En het zijn niet alleen China\, Rusland of Turkije waar internetcensuur\, nepnieuws en desinformatie dagelijkse kost is. Zelfs in Nederland hebben we hiermee te maken. Grote internetbedrijven zoals Google en Facebook bepalen ook in ons land welke nieuwsfeiten we wel en niet te zien en te lezen krijgen op onze tijdlijn. DESCRIPTION:Open Data Day is an annual event that promotes awareness and use of open data. \nThe event takes place globally\, usually in February or March. Typical activities include talks\, seminars\, demonstrations\, hackathons\, training or the announcement of open data releases or other milestones in open data. In some countries it occurs along with Code Across coding events. Open Data Day was first proposed by David Eaves in 2010. The idea followed discussions with Edward Ocampo-Gooding\, Mary Beth Baker\, Daniel Beauchamp\, Pedro Markun\, and Daniela Silva. Today\, the event coordination is done through its google mailing list. The date for the event is chosen by the group members taking into consideration different cultural events. From 2015\, Open Knowledge Foundation – in cooperation with other NGOs from the open data world – has offered mini-grants of USD 300 to support the facilitation of events around the globe. \nEach year\, the theme is deliberately broad to accommodate the most diverse practices and perspectives of working with open data for the public interest. In 2025\, we want to address some of the most pressing issues of our time and go beyond climate justice. DESCRIPTION:De Free and Open source Software Developers’ European Meeting (FOSDEM) is een niet-commercieel tweedaags evenement dat ieder jaar georganiseerd wordt door vrijwilligers van de FOSS-gemeenschap om het gebruik van vrije en opensourcesoftware te bevorderen. \nFOSDEM vindt plaats op het terrein van de ULB te Brussel. De talks & tutorials zijn vrij toegankelijk en werden in het verleden gegeven door grote namen als Richard M. Stallman en Jimbo Wales. Het doel van FOSDEM is tevens een mogelijkheid te vormen voor softwareontwikkelaars om “in real life” samen te komen\, kennis te maken met andere projecten en op de hoogte te komen van de laatste nieuwe ontwikkelingen in de FOSS-wereld. In 2000 organiseerde Raphael Bauduin uit België een meeting voor FOSS–ontwikkelaars. Hij noemde het eerst Open Source Developers European Meeting (OSDEM). Om vrije software-ontwikkelaars niet tegen het hoofd te stoten is de meeting in 2001 hernoemd naar FOSDEM. DESCRIPTION:De jaarlijkse Europese Dag van de Privacy (Dataprotectiedag) is in het leven geroepen door de Raad van Europa met steun van de Europese Commissie. \nGekozen is voor 28 januari\, de dag waarop in 1981 het Dataprotectieverdrag werd geopend voor ondertekening. DESCRIPTION:Our data is collected everyday — your computer\, smartphone\, and pretty much every other internet-connected device gathers data\, which might even include your wristwatch or car! \nBut you often have some choices when it comes to how this data is collected\, shared\, and sold. Personal data can be stored indefinably. Data can be used to make inferences about your socioeconomic status\, demographic information\, and preferences. Even seemingly innocuous information\, such as your favorite restaurants or items you purchase online\, can be used to make assumptions about you and your habits. Many companies have the opportunity to monitor the data of their users and consumers\, and they sell the data for profit. If this reality is sending chills down your spine\, don’t fret! You can take steps to control how your data is shared. You can’t lock down all of your data — even if you stop using the internet\, credit card companies record your purchases and the government knows your Social Security number.
