SUMMARY:Internet Dag / Internet Day 2025
DESCRIPTION:Internet Day is an event celebrated on October 29\, promoted by the Association of Internet Users and by the Internet Society\, respectively.\n\nIt was celebrated for the first time on October 29\, 2005. Shortly afterwards\, at the Summit of the Information Society celebrated in Tunisia in November 2005\, it was decided to propose to the UN the designation of October 29 as the World-wide Day of the Information Society\, which resulted in Internet Day being celebrated on that day. While the internet may not  have been possible without a million other monumental inventions that came before it\, it’s hard to find any other invention that has had such a monumental impact on mankind. That’s why\, since October 29\, 2005\, the anniversary of the first internet transmission is celebrated. It is a chance to celebrate the people who helped build the internet\, while also giving us a moment to reflect on all the ways that it has changed our lives forever. The World Wide Web (often used synonymously\, but incorrectly\, with the internet itself) became possible in 1989. It began with the invention of Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) and Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) by Tim Berners-Lee\, a British scientist at CERN. The World Wide Web project was formally announced on August 6\, 1991. \nLinks:\nInternet Day \nThe Secret Life of the 500+ Cables That Run the Internet \nNetwork neutrality \nTag: internet

SUMMARY:#OAweek Open Access Week 2025
DESCRIPTION:Open Access Week is an annual scholarly communication event focusing on open access and related topics\, taking place globally during the last full week of October in a multitude of locations both on- and offline. \nTypical activities include talks\, seminars\, symposia\, or the announcement of open access mandates or other milestones in open access. Open Access Week is organized by SPARC in partnership with the Open Access Week Advisory Committee. Open Access Week is an opportunity for the academic and research community to continue to learn about the potential benefits of Open Access\, to share what they’ve learned with colleagues\, and to help inspire wider participation in helping to make Open Access a new norm in scholarship and research. Open Access to information – the free\, immediate\, online access to the results of scholarly research\, and the right to use and re-use those results as you need – has the power to transform the way research and scientific inquiry are conducted. It has direct and widespread implications for academia\, medicine\, science\, industry\, and for society as a whole. Open Access Week is an invaluable chance to connect the global momentum toward the open sharing of knowledge with the advancement of policy changes and the importance of social issues affecting people around the world. The event is celebrated by individuals\, institutions and organizations around the world. \n2025 Theme: Who Owns Our Knowledge? 2025 theme asks a pointed question about the present moment and how\, in a time of disruption\, communities can reassert control over the knowledge they produce. It also challenges us to reflect on not only who has access to education and research but on how knowledge is created and shared\, where it has come from\, and whose voices are recognized and valued. \nLinks:\nOpen Access Week

SUMMARY:Het digitale debat
\nLinks:\nDebat digitale zaken

SUMMARY:Free Software Foundation (FSF) turns forty
DESCRIPTION:The Free Software Foundation (FSF) turns forty on October 4\, 2025 and will end its thirties on a high note\, FSF wishes it was celebrating the achievement of software freedom for all computer users\, but we’re not there yet. \nUntil the mission becomes reality and FSF can retire\, instead\, it is celebrating forty years of activism\, and all that FSF has achieved. Since the founding in 1985\, FSF laid out many stepping stones on the road to software freedom\, and is eager to continue building the road ahead. We will celebrate our fortieth in the spirit of bringing the international free software community together\, discussing what we can do next to make the world freer\, and celebrating how far we’ve come. We’re aiming for a libre planet! Sounds familiar? Instead of hosting one LibrePlanet conference in 2025\, we’re planning a jam-packed anniversary year\, filled with several new and exciting activities! We’ll begin the anniversary year with an unprecedented memorabilia auction\, starting as a silent auction on March 17\, and culminating in a virtual live auction on March 23. By moving out of the FSF office\, we got to sort through all the fun and historically important memorabilia and selected the best ones. This is your chance to get your very own personal souvenir of the FSF\, from original GNU art to a famous katana and the very same VT220 that was standing on the FSF’s front desk\, and which people used to display ASCII art or to play free software games. \nLet’s claim the month of May as libre planet (or libre local) month! We’re inviting free software supporters like you anywhere in the world\, to organize an in-person community meetup in your area to bring people together. We’re setting up a small fund for these local gatherings\, can send stickers\, flyers\, ideas and tips\, and you can invite an FSF staff member to give a talk or workshop during your event and of course\, we’ll help promote it. Need help picking a date? Consider the first weekend of the month\, when LibrePlanet 2024: Cultivating Community was held. Then\, on the actual birthday of the FSF on October 4\, 2025\, there will be a big celebration in Boston\, MA\, and the entire free software community is invited. We’re also planning on having the associate member meeting then. These are just some of the big ticket items we have worked out\, but there is more! Keep an eye out on the FSF’s pages\, we’ll be posting exact information on everything upcoming. In the meantime\, naturally\, there are a few ways you can get involved in the spirit of LibrePlanet and join us in celebrating forty years of advocating for software freedom. \nLinks:\nForty years of commitment to software freedom

SUMMARY:#Linux – first release (1991) 2025
DESCRIPTION:Linux (/ˈlinʊks/ (listen) LEEN-uuks or /ˈlɪnʊks/ LIN-uuks) is a family of open-source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel\, an operating system kernel first released on September 17\, 1991\, by Linus Torvalds. \nLinux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution. Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries\, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word “Linux” in their name\, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name “GNU/Linux” to emphasize the importance of GNU software\, causing some controversy. Popular Linux distributions include Debian\, Fedora\, and Ubuntu. Commercial distributions include Red Hat Enterprise Linux and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server. Desktop Linux distributions include a windowing system such as X11 or Wayland\, and a desktop environment such as GNOME or KDE Plasma. Distributions intended for servers may omit graphics altogether\, or include a solution stack such as LAMP. Because Linux is freely redistributable\, anyone may create a distribution for any purpose. \nLinux was originally developed for personal computers based on the Intel x86 architecture\, but has since been ported to more platforms than any other operating system. Because of the dominance of the Linux-based Android on smartphones\, Linux also has the largest installed base of all general-purpose operating systems. Although Linux is used by only around 2.3 percent of desktop computers\, the Chromebook\, which runs the Linux kernel-based Chrome OS\, dominates the US K–12 education market and represents nearly 20 percent of sub-$300 notebook sales in the US. Linux is the leading operating system on servers (over 96.4% of the top 1 million web servers’ operating systems are Linux)\, leads other big iron systems such as mainframe computers\, and is the only OS used on TOP500 supercomputers (since November 2017\, having gradually eliminated all competitors). \nLinux also runs on embedded systems\, i.e. devices whose operating system is typically built into the firmware and is highly tailored to the system. This includes routers\, automation controls\, smart home technology\, televisions (Samsung and LG Smart TVs use Tizen and WebOS\, respectively)\, automobiles (for example\, Tesla\, Audi\, Mercedes-Benz\, Hyundai\, and Toyota all rely on Linux)\, digital video recorders\, video game consoles\, and smartwatches. The Falcon 9’s and the Dragon 2‘s avionics use a customized version of Linux. Linux is one of the most prominent examples of free and open-source software collaboration. The source code may be used\, modified and distributed commercially or non-commercially by anyone under the terms of its respective licenses\, such as the GNU General Public License. \nLinks:\nThe Linux Documentation Project \nDistroWatch

SUMMARY:#Linux – verjaardag / birthday (1991) 2025
SUMMARY:Countering Chinese State-Sponsored Actors Compromise of Networks Worldwide to Feed Global Espionage System - publication
DESCRIPTION:People’s Republic of China (PRC) state-sponsored cyber threat actors are targeting networks globally\, including\, but not limited to\, telecommunications\, government\, transportation\, lodging\, and military infrastructure networks. \nWhile these actors focus on large backbone routers of major telecommunications providers\, as well as provider edge (PE) and customer edge (CE) routers\, they also leverage compromised devices and trusted connections to pivot into other networks. These actors often modify routers to maintain persistent\, long-term access to networks. This activity partially overlaps with cyber threat actor reporting by the cybersecurity industry—commonly referred to as Salt Typhoon\, OPERATOR PANDA\, RedMike\, UNC5807\, and GhostEmperor\, among others. The authoring agencies are not adopting a particular commercial naming convention and hereafter refer to those responsible for the cyber threat activity more generically as “Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) actors” throughout this advisory. This cluster of cyber threat activity has been observed in the United States\, Australia\, Canada\, New Zealand\, the United Kingdom\, and other areas globally. The Cybersecurity Advisory (CSA) “Countering Chinese State-Sponsored Actors Compromise of Networks Worldwide to Feed Global Espionage System” includes observations from various government and industry  investigations where the APT actors targeted internal enterprise environments\, as well as systems and networks that deliver services directly to customers. This CSA details the tactics\, techniques\, and procedures (TTPs) leveraged by these APT actors to facilitate detection and threat hunting\, and provides mitigation guidance to reduce the risk from these APT actors and their TTPs. The authoring agencies strongly urge network defenders to hunt for malicious activity and to apply the mitigations in this CSA to reduce the threat of Chinese state-sponsored and other malicious cyber activity. Any mitigation or eviction measures listed within are subject to change as new information becomes available and ongoing coordinated operations dictate. Network defenders should ensure any actions taken in response to the CSA are compliant with local laws and regulations within the jurisdictions within which they operate. \nLinks:\nNederlandse providers doelwit van Chinese hackers

SUMMARY:DEF CON 33
DESCRIPTION:DEF CON (also written as DEFCON\, Defcon\, or DC) is a hacker convention held annually in Las Vegas\, Nevada. \nThe first DEF CON took place in June 1993 and today many attendees at DEF CON include computer security professionals\, journalists\, lawyers\, federal government employees\, security researchers\, students\, and hackers with a general interest in software\, computer architecture\, hardware modification\, conference badges\, and anything else that can be “hacked”. The event consists of several tracks of speakers about computer and hacking-related subjects\, as well as cyber-security challenges and competitions (known as hacking wargames). Contests held during the event are extremely varied and can range from creating the longest Wi-Fi connection to finding the most effective way to cool a beer in the Nevada heat. Other contests\, past and present\, include lockpicking\, robotics-related contests\, art\, slogan\, coffee wars\, scavenger hunt\, and Capture the Flag. Capture the Flag (CTF) is perhaps the best known of these contests and is a hacking competition where teams of hackers attempt to attack and defend computers and networks using software and network structures. CTF has been emulated at other hacking conferences as well as in academic and military contexts (as red team exercises). Federal law enforcement agents from the FBI\, DoD\, United States Postal Inspection Service\, DHS (via CISA) and other agencies regularly attend DEF CON. Some have considered DEF CON to be the “world’s largest” hacker conference given its attendee size and the number of other conferences modeling themselves after it. \nLinks:\nDEF CON 33

SUMMARY:Digital Sovereignty Index 2025: How countries compare in digital independence - publication
DESCRIPTION:The Digital Sovereignty Index shows how countries compare in digital independence. \nAround the world\, discussions about digital sovereignty are intensifying. Governments\, institutions\, companies and civil society are becoming increasingly aware of the importance of controlling their own digital infrastructure. From concerns about data protection and vendor lock-in to questions of political autonomy\, the topic has moved from niche circles to mainstream policy debates. \nLinks:\nDigital Sovereignty Index: How countries compare in digital independence \nAgenda – Streven naar Digitale Autonomie in Amsterdam / Amsterdam zet eerste stap naar digitale onafhankelijkheid – publicatie

SUMMARY:#WorldWideWebDay 2025
DESCRIPTION:Klik op afbeelding om te lezen\nWorld Wide Web Day is celebrated on August 1st every year\, it is a global celebration dedicated to web browsing. \nTim Berners-Lee developed the World Wide Web (“WWW” or the “Web”) in the year 1989 at the CERN centre located in Geneva\, as a way for him to interact with co-workers via hyperlinks. A quarter of a century later\, WWW has become the principal means of transaction\, interaction and communication among the humans\, opening the door of possibility for people in ways that would have been unthinkable to the previous generations. The World Wide Web is a global information medium which users can read and write via computers connected to the Internet. The term is often mistakenly used as a synonym for the Internet itself and often called “the Internet”\, but the Web is a service that operates over the Internet\, just as email (also e-mail) and Usenet also does. The history of the Internet dates back significantly further than that of the World Wide Web. Web is the global information system. \nLinks:\nWorld Wide Web Day\n\n30th Anniversary of the World Wide Web

SUMMARY:#SysAdminDay System Administrator Appreciation Day / Systeembeheerdersdag 2025
DESCRIPTION:System Administrator Appreciation Day\, also known as Sysadmin Day\, SysAdminDay\, or Sysmas\, is an annual event celebrated on the last Friday in July. \nThe event exists to show appreciation for the work of sysadmins and other IT workers. Your network is secure\, your computer is up and running\, and your printer is jam-free. Why? Because you’ve got an awesome sysadmin (or maybe a whole IT department) keeping your business up and running. So say IT loud; say IT proud … Friday\, July 26\, 2024\, is the 25th annual System Administrator Appreciation Day. On this special international day\, give your System Administrator something that shows that you truly appreciate their hard work and dedication. (All day Friday\, 24 hours\, your own local time-zone). Let’s face it\, System Administrators get no respect 364 days a year. This is the day that all fellow System Administrators across the globe\, will be showered with expensive sports cars and large piles of cash in appreciation of their diligent work. But seriously\, we are asking for a nice token gift and some public acknowledgement. It’s the least you could do. Consider all the daunting tasks and long hours (weekends too.) Let’s be honest\, sometimes we don’t know our System Administrators as well as they know us. Remember this is one day to recognize your System Administrator for their workplace contributions and to promote professional excellence. Thank them for all the things they do for you and your business. \nLinks:\nSystem Administrator Appreciation Day

SUMMARY:Kwetsbaarheid verholpen in Citrix NetScaler ADC en NetScaler Gateway - publicatie
\nLinks:\nKwetsbaarheid verholpen in Citrix NetScaler ADC en NetScaler Gateway \nLeesTip – Kwetsbaarheden in Microsoft SharePoint Server actief misbruikt / Citrix kwetsbaarheid \nInformatie over kwetsbaarheden in Citrix NetScaler ADC en NetScaler Gateway \nOpenbaar Ministerie gaat geleidelijk weer online \nCasus: Citrix kwetsbaarheid (Update 11-08-2025) \nPennsylvania attorney general says cyberattack knocked phone\, email systems offline

SUMMARY:Protect Yourself From Meta’s Latest Attack on Privacy - publication
DESCRIPTION:Researchers recently caught Meta using an egregious new tracking technique to spy on you\, exploiting a technical loophole\, the company was able to have their apps snoop on users’ web browsing. \nThis tracking technique stands out for its flagrant disregard of core security protections built into phones and browsers. The episode is yet another reason to distrust Meta\, block web tracking\, and end surveillance advertising. Fortunately\, there are steps that you\, your browser\, and your government can take to fight online tracking: \nChoose a browser with better default privacy protections than Chrome. For example\, Brave and DuckDuckGo protected users from this tracking technique because they block Meta’s tracking pixel by default. Firefox only partially blocked the new tracking technique with its default settings\, but fully blocked it for users with “Enhanced Tracking Protection” set to “Strict.” \nIt’s also a good idea to avoid using in-app browsers. When you open links inside the Facebook or Instagram apps\, Meta can track you more easily than if you opened the same links in an external browser. \nReduce the number of ways your information can leak by deleting apps you don’t trust or don’t regularly use. Try opting for websites over apps when possible. In this case\, and many similar cases\, using the Facebook and Instagram website instead of the apps would have limited data collection. Even though both can contain tracking code\, apps can access information that websites generally can’t\, like a persistent “advertising ID” that companies use to track you (follow EFF’s instructions to turn it off if you haven’t already). \nEFF’s free browser extension blocks trackers to stop companies from spying on you online. Although Privacy Badger would’ve stopped Meta’s latest tracking technique by blocking their pixel\, Firefox for Android is the only mobile browser it currently supports. You can install Privacy Badger on Chrome\, Firefox\, and Edge on your desktop computer. \nMeta’s business model creates an incentive to collect as much information as possible about people to sell targeted ads. Short of deleting your accounts\, you have a number of options to limit tracking and how the company uses your data. \nLinks:\nProtect Yourself From Meta’s Latest Attack on Privacy

SUMMARY:Inside Amsterdam’s high-stakes experiment to create fair welfare AI - publication
DESCRIPTION:The Dutch city of Amsterdam thought it could break a decade-long trend of implementing discriminatory algorithms\, its failure raises the question: can these programs ever be fair? \n\nThere’s an ongoing debate about whether algorithms can ever be fair when tasked with making decisions that shape people’s lives. Over the past several years of efforts to use artificial intelligence in this way\, examples of collateral damage have mounted: nonwhite job applicants weeded out of job application pools in the US\, families being wrongly flagged for child abuse investigations in Japan\, and low-income residents being denied food subsidies in India. Proponents of these assessment systems argue that they can create more efficient public services by doing more with less and\, in the case of welfare systems specifically\, reclaim money that is allegedly being lost from the public purse. In practice\, many were poorly designed from the start. They sometimes factor in personal characteristics in a way that leads to discrimination\, and sometimes they have been deployed without testing for bias or effectiveness. In general\, they offer few options for people to challenge—or even understand—the automated actions directly affecting how they live. \nWhen Amsterdam set out to create an AI model to detect potential welfare fraud\, officials thought it could break a decade-plus trend of discriminatory algorithms that had harmed people all over the world. City officials in the welfare department believed they could build technology that would prevent fraud while protecting citizens’ rights. They followed these emerging best practices and invested a vast amount of time and money in a project that eventually processed live welfare applications. But in their pilot\, they found that the system they’d developed was still not fair and effective. Why? Lighthouse Reports\, MIT Technology Review\, and the Dutch newspaper Trouw have gained unprecedented access to the system to try to find out. In response to a public records request\, the city disclosed multiple versions of the algorithm and data on how it evaluated real-world welfare applicants\, offering us unique insight into whether\, under the best possible conditions\, algorithmic systems can deliver on their ambitious promises.   \n\nLinks:\nInside Amsterdam’s high-stakes experiment to create fair welfare AI \nAmsterdam wilde met AI de bijstand eerlijker en efficiënter maken.
