SUMMARY:Day against Cybercrime 2025
DESCRIPTION:More than two-thirds of the world’s population accessed the Internet in 2023\, connectivity has changed lives and brought countless benefits\, but the digital world also brings significant risks. \nCybercriminals exploit online systems through malware\, ransomware and hacking to steal money\, data\, and other valuable information\, and they use information and communication technology to facilitate other crimes\, recruit victims\, perpetrate scams and launder money. The threat is only growing.  Transnational organized criminal groups have set up scam farms\, running billion-dollar criminal enterprises and defrauding victims from around the world through online romance schemes\, investment fraud and other scams. At the same time\, these criminal groups are luring people through online platforms and trafficking them to work in the scam centres. Prevention is the best defence against online threats\, and the international community needs urgently to raise greater awareness of the dangers of online fraud\, recruitment and trafficking. International cooperation must also be strengthened as cybercrime and online scams are cross-border threats\, exploiting scam victims in the most developed countries and trafficking victims in the most impoverished\, and Member States must work together in order to effectively prevent and address such crimes\, and protect people. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) leads the UN response to cybercrime with training and support to countries across the world. Drawing upon the Office’s specialized expertise on fighting transnational organized crime and corruption and supporting criminal justice systems\, UNODC provides technical assistance to strengthen prevention\, reform legislative reform\, build and upskill law enforcement capabilities and improve international cooperation. \nLinks:\nDay against Cybercrime

SUMMARY:VPRO #Tegenlicht – Zo nemen techplatforms de Europese economie over volgens Tim Wu (TV internet)
Precies daarover schrijft Tim Wu in The Age of Extraction.

SUMMARY:VPRO #Tegenlicht – AI is coming for your feelings! (TV internet)
\nLinks:\nAI is coming for your feelings! \nKunstmatige intelligentie / Artificial intelligence : Ethiek

SUMMARY:#BlueBeanieDay 2025
DESCRIPTION:Blue Beanie Day is an annual international celebration of web standards which began in 2007\, originated by Douglas Vos and popularized by Jeffrey Zeldman\, the author of ‘Designing with Web Standards‘\, it is celebrated on November 30 of each year. \nThe commemoration\, which is accompanied by web developers sharing photographs of themselves in blue beanies\, seeks to raise awareness of web design features such as progressive enhancement and accessible\, semantic markup and “fight Web Standards Apathy”. Users use the hashtag #BlueBeanieDay\, change their social media avatars to show themselves in blue headgear\, and share information and links to content promoting the open web and online accessibility. The origin of the name of the holiday is the image of Jeffrey Zeldman on the cover of his book wearing a blue knit cap. Over the years\, the Blue Beanie Day also became an action day for web accessibility\, for which the correct use of web standards is a basic requirement. \nLinks:\nBlue Beanie Day 2025 \nHow to Join Blue Beanie Day: Wear and Share!

SUMMARY:#AaronSwartzDay 2025
DESCRIPTION:Aaron Swartz Day was founded\, in 2013\, after the death of Aaron Hillel Swartz (November 8\, 1986 – January 11\, 2013) an American computer programmer\, entrepreneur\, writer\, political organizer\, and Internet hacktivist. \nAaron Swartz Day has these combined goals: \n\nTo draw attention to what happened to Aaron\, in the hopes of stopping it from happening to anyone else.\n\nThis includes clarifying that\, although Aaron was a hacker\, he didn’t hack MIT.\n\n\nTo provide a yearly showcase of many of the projects that were  started by Aaron before his death.\n\nSecureDrop\nOpen Library\n\n\nTo provide a yearly showcase of new projects that were directly inspired by Aaron and his work.\n\nA few Aaron-inspired examples from this event include:\n\nThe Pursuance Project (by Barrett Brown & Steve Phillips)\nOpen Archive (by Natalie Cadranel)\nJason Leopold’s Freedom of Information Act Request (FOIA) activism (article from 2013)\n\n\n\n\n\nAs a programmer\, Swartz helped develop the web feed format RSS; the technical architecture for Creative Commons\, an organization dedicated to creating copyright licenses; the website framework web.py; and Markdown\, a lightweight markup language format. Swartz was involved in the development of the social news aggregation website Reddit until he departed from the company in 2007. He is often credited as a martyr and a prodigy\, and his work focused on civic awareness and activism. After Reddit was sold to Condé Nast Publications in 2006\, Swartz became more involved in activism\, helping launch the Progressive Change Campaign Committee in 2009. In 2010\, he became a research fellow at Harvard University’s Safra Research Lab on Institutional Corruption\, directed by Lawrence Lessig. He founded the online group Demand Progress\, known for its campaign against the Stop Online Piracy Act. On January 6\, 2011\, Swartz was arrested by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) police on state breaking-and-entering charges\, after connecting a computer to the MIT network in an unmarked and unlocked closet and setting it to download academic journal articles systematically from JSTOR using a guest user account issued to him by MIT. Federal prosecutors\, led by Carmen Ortiz\, later charged him with two counts of wire fraud and eleven violations of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act\, carrying a cumulative maximum penalty of $1 million in fines\, 35 years in prison\, asset forfeiture\, restitution\, and supervised release. Swartz declined a plea bargain under which he would have served six months in federal prison. Two days after the prosecution rejected a counter-offer by Swartz\, he was found dead in his Brooklyn apartment. In 2013\, Swartz was inducted posthumously into the Internet Hall of Fame. \nLinks:\nAaron Swartz Day

SUMMARY:Towards a future space-based\, highly scalable AI infrastructure system design - publication
DESCRIPTION:Exploring a space-based\, scalable AI infrastructure system design: Project Suncatcher is a moonshot exploring a new frontier: equipping solar-powered satellite constellations with TPUs and free-space optical links to one day scale machine learning compute in space. \nArtificial intelligence (AI) is a foundational technology that could reshape our world\, driving new scientific discoveries and helping us tackle humanity’s greatest challenges. Now\, we’re asking where we can go to unlock its fullest potential. The Sun is the ultimate energy source in our solar system\, emitting more power than 100 trillion times humanity’s total electricity production. In the right orbit\, a solar panel can be up to 8 times more productive than on earth\, and produce power nearly continuously\, reducing the need for batteries. In the future\, space may be the best place to scale AI compute. Working backwards from there\, our new research moonshot\, Project Suncatcher\, envisions compact constellations of solar-powered satellites\, carrying Google TPUs and connected by free-space optical links. This approach would have tremendous potential for scale\, and also minimizes impact on terrestrial resources. We’re excited about this growing area of exploration\, and our early research\, shared in a preprint paper “Towards a future space-based\, highly scalable AI infrastructure system design\,”\, which describes our progress toward tackling the foundational challenges of this ambitious endeavor — including high-bandwidth communication between satellites\, orbital dynamics\, and radiation effects on computing. By focusing on a modular design of smaller\, interconnected satellites\, we are laying the groundwork for a highly scalable\, future space-based AI infrastructure. Project Suncatcher is part of Google’s long tradition of taking on moonshots that tackle tough scientific and engineering problems. Like all moonshots\, there will be unknowns\, but it’s in this spirit that we embarked on building a large-scale quantum computer a decade ago — before it was considered a realistic engineering goal — and envisioned an autonomous vehicle over 15 years ago\, which eventually became Waymo and now serves millions of passenger trips around the globe. \nLinks:\nExploring a space-based\, scalable AI infrastructure system design \nGoogle bouwt datacenters in de ruimte

SUMMARY:Allereerste live stream ter wereld (1994) 2025
DESCRIPTION:Op 4 november 1994 werd vanuit podium Simplon in Groningen de allereerste live stream ter wereld geproduceerd. \nLinks:\nHieperdepiep! SUMMARY:Internet Dag / Internet Day 2025
DESCRIPTION:Internet Day is an event celebrated on October 29\, promoted by the Association of Internet Users and by the Internet Society\, respectively.\n\nIt was celebrated for the first time on October 29\, 2005. Shortly afterwards\, at the Summit of the Information Society celebrated in Tunisia in November 2005\, it was decided to propose to the UN the designation of October 29 as the World-wide Day of the Information Society\, which resulted in Internet Day being celebrated on that day. While the internet may not  have been possible without a million other monumental inventions that came before it\, it’s hard to find any other invention that has had such a monumental impact on mankind. That’s why\, since October 29\, 2005\, the anniversary of the first internet transmission is celebrated. It is a chance to celebrate the people who helped build the internet\, while also giving us a moment to reflect on all the ways that it has changed our lives forever. The World Wide Web (often used synonymously\, but incorrectly\, with the internet itself) became possible in 1989. It began with the invention of Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) and Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) by Tim Berners-Lee\, a British scientist at CERN. The World Wide Web project was formally announced on August 6\, 1991. \nLinks:\nInternet Day \nThe Secret Life of the 500+ Cables That Run the Internet \nNetwork neutrality \nTag: internet

SUMMARY:#OAweek Open Access Week 2025
DESCRIPTION:Open Access Week is an annual scholarly communication event focusing on open access and related topics\, taking place globally during the last full week of October in a multitude of locations both on- and offline. \nTypical activities include talks\, seminars\, symposia\, or the announcement of open access mandates or other milestones in open access. Open Access Week is organized by SPARC in partnership with the Open Access Week Advisory Committee. Open Access Week is an opportunity for the academic and research community to continue to learn about the potential benefits of Open Access\, to share what they’ve learned with colleagues\, and to help inspire wider participation in helping to make Open Access a new norm in scholarship and research. Open Access to information – the free\, immediate\, online access to the results of scholarly research\, and the right to use and re-use those results as you need – has the power to transform the way research and scientific inquiry are conducted. It has direct and widespread implications for academia\, medicine\, science\, industry\, and for society as a whole. Open Access Week is an invaluable chance to connect the global momentum toward the open sharing of knowledge with the advancement of policy changes and the importance of social issues affecting people around the world. The event is celebrated by individuals\, institutions and organizations around the world. \n2025 Theme: Who Owns Our Knowledge? 2025 theme asks a pointed question about the present moment and how\, in a time of disruption\, communities can reassert control over the knowledge they produce. It also challenges us to reflect on not only who has access to education and research but on how knowledge is created and shared\, where it has come from\, and whose voices are recognized and valued. \nLinks:\nOpen Access Week

SUMMARY:Het digitale debat
\nLinks:\nDebat digitale zaken

SUMMARY:Free Software Foundation (FSF) turns forty
DESCRIPTION:The Free Software Foundation (FSF) turns forty on October 4\, 2025 and will end its thirties on a high note\, FSF wishes it was celebrating the achievement of software freedom for all computer users\, but we’re not there yet. \nUntil the mission becomes reality and FSF can retire\, instead\, it is celebrating forty years of activism\, and all that FSF has achieved. Since the founding in 1985\, FSF laid out many stepping stones on the road to software freedom\, and is eager to continue building the road ahead. We will celebrate our fortieth in the spirit of bringing the international free software community together\, discussing what we can do next to make the world freer\, and celebrating how far we’ve come. We’re aiming for a libre planet! Sounds familiar? Instead of hosting one LibrePlanet conference in 2025\, we’re planning a jam-packed anniversary year\, filled with several new and exciting activities! We’ll begin the anniversary year with an unprecedented memorabilia auction\, starting as a silent auction on March 17\, and culminating in a virtual live auction on March 23. By moving out of the FSF office\, we got to sort through all the fun and historically important memorabilia and selected the best ones. This is your chance to get your very own personal souvenir of the FSF\, from original GNU art to a famous katana and the very same VT220 that was standing on the FSF’s front desk\, and which people used to display ASCII art or to play free software games. \nLet’s claim the month of May as libre planet (or libre local) month! We’re inviting free software supporters like you anywhere in the world\, to organize an in-person community meetup in your area to bring people together. We’re setting up a small fund for these local gatherings\, can send stickers\, flyers\, ideas and tips\, and you can invite an FSF staff member to give a talk or workshop during your event and of course\, we’ll help promote it. Need help picking a date? Consider the first weekend of the month\, when LibrePlanet 2024: Cultivating Community was held. Then\, on the actual birthday of the FSF on October 4\, 2025\, there will be a big celebration in Boston\, MA\, and the entire free software community is invited. We’re also planning on having the associate member meeting then. These are just some of the big ticket items we have worked out\, but there is more! Keep an eye out on the FSF’s pages\, we’ll be posting exact information on everything upcoming. In the meantime\, naturally\, there are a few ways you can get involved in the spirit of LibrePlanet and join us in celebrating forty years of advocating for software freedom. \nLinks:\nForty years of commitment to software freedom

SUMMARY:#Linux – first release (1991) 2025
DESCRIPTION:Linux (/ˈlinʊks/ (listen) LEEN-uuks or /ˈlɪnʊks/ LIN-uuks) is a family of open-source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel\, an operating system kernel first released on September 17\, 1991\, by Linus Torvalds. \nLinux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution. Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries\, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word “Linux” in their name\, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name “GNU/Linux” to emphasize the importance of GNU software\, causing some controversy. Popular Linux distributions include Debian\, Fedora\, and Ubuntu. Commercial distributions include Red Hat Enterprise Linux and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server. Desktop Linux distributions include a windowing system such as X11 or Wayland\, and a desktop environment such as GNOME or KDE Plasma. Distributions intended for servers may omit graphics altogether\, or include a solution stack such as LAMP. Because Linux is freely redistributable\, anyone may create a distribution for any purpose. \nLinux was originally developed for personal computers based on the Intel x86 architecture\, but has since been ported to more platforms than any other operating system. Because of the dominance of the Linux-based Android on smartphones\, Linux also has the largest installed base of all general-purpose operating systems. Although Linux is used by only around 2.3 percent of desktop computers\, the Chromebook\, which runs the Linux kernel-based Chrome OS\, dominates the US K–12 education market and represents nearly 20 percent of sub-$300 notebook sales in the US. Linux is the leading operating system on servers (over 96.4% of the top 1 million web servers’ operating systems are Linux)\, leads other big iron systems such as mainframe computers\, and is the only OS used on TOP500 supercomputers (since November 2017\, having gradually eliminated all competitors). \nLinux also runs on embedded systems\, i.e. devices whose operating system is typically built into the firmware and is highly tailored to the system. This includes routers\, automation controls\, smart home technology\, televisions (Samsung and LG Smart TVs use Tizen and WebOS\, respectively)\, automobiles (for example\, Tesla\, Audi\, Mercedes-Benz\, Hyundai\, and Toyota all rely on Linux)\, digital video recorders\, video game consoles\, and smartwatches. The Falcon 9’s and the Dragon 2‘s avionics use a customized version of Linux. Linux is one of the most prominent examples of free and open-source software collaboration. The source code may be used\, modified and distributed commercially or non-commercially by anyone under the terms of its respective licenses\, such as the GNU General Public License. \nLinks:\nThe Linux Documentation Project \nDistroWatch

SUMMARY:#Linux – verjaardag / birthday (1991) 2025
SUMMARY:Countering Chinese State-Sponsored Actors Compromise of Networks Worldwide to Feed Global Espionage System - publication
DESCRIPTION:People’s Republic of China (PRC) state-sponsored cyber threat actors are targeting networks globally\, including\, but not limited to\, telecommunications\, government\, transportation\, lodging\, and military infrastructure networks. \nWhile these actors focus on large backbone routers of major telecommunications providers\, as well as provider edge (PE) and customer edge (CE) routers\, they also leverage compromised devices and trusted connections to pivot into other networks. These actors often modify routers to maintain persistent\, long-term access to networks. This activity partially overlaps with cyber threat actor reporting by the cybersecurity industry—commonly referred to as Salt Typhoon\, OPERATOR PANDA\, RedMike\, UNC5807\, and GhostEmperor\, among others. The authoring agencies are not adopting a particular commercial naming convention and hereafter refer to those responsible for the cyber threat activity more generically as “Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) actors” throughout this advisory. This cluster of cyber threat activity has been observed in the United States\, Australia\, Canada\, New Zealand\, the United Kingdom\, and other areas globally. The Cybersecurity Advisory (CSA) “Countering Chinese State-Sponsored Actors Compromise of Networks Worldwide to Feed Global Espionage System” includes observations from various government and industry  investigations where the APT actors targeted internal enterprise environments\, as well as systems and networks that deliver services directly to customers. This CSA details the tactics\, techniques\, and procedures (TTPs) leveraged by these APT actors to facilitate detection and threat hunting\, and provides mitigation guidance to reduce the risk from these APT actors and their TTPs. The authoring agencies strongly urge network defenders to hunt for malicious activity and to apply the mitigations in this CSA to reduce the threat of Chinese state-sponsored and other malicious cyber activity. Any mitigation or eviction measures listed within are subject to change as new information becomes available and ongoing coordinated operations dictate. Network defenders should ensure any actions taken in response to the CSA are compliant with local laws and regulations within the jurisdictions within which they operate. \nLinks:\nNederlandse providers doelwit van Chinese hackers

SUMMARY:DEF CON 33
DESCRIPTION:DEF CON (also written as DEFCON\, Defcon\, or DC) is a hacker convention held annually in Las Vegas\, Nevada. \nThe first DEF CON took place in June 1993 and today many attendees at DEF CON include computer security professionals\, journalists\, lawyers\, federal government employees\, security researchers\, students\, and hackers with a general interest in software\, computer architecture\, hardware modification\, conference badges\, and anything else that can be “hacked”. The event consists of several tracks of speakers about computer and hacking-related subjects\, as well as cyber-security challenges and competitions (known as hacking wargames). Contests held during the event are extremely varied and can range from creating the longest Wi-Fi connection to finding the most effective way to cool a beer in the Nevada heat. Other contests\, past and present\, include lockpicking\, robotics-related contests\, art\, slogan\, coffee wars\, scavenger hunt\, and Capture the Flag. Capture the Flag (CTF) is perhaps the best known of these contests and is a hacking competition where teams of hackers attempt to attack and defend computers and networks using software and network structures. CTF has been emulated at other hacking conferences as well as in academic and military contexts (as red team exercises). Federal law enforcement agents from the FBI\, DoD\, United States Postal Inspection Service\, DHS (via CISA) and other agencies regularly attend DEF CON. Some have considered DEF CON to be the “world’s largest” hacker conference given its attendee size and the number of other conferences modeling themselves after it. \nLinks:\nDEF CON 33

SUMMARY:#WorldWideWebDay 2025
DESCRIPTION:Klik op afbeelding om te lezen\nWorld Wide Web Day is celebrated on August 1st every year\, it is a global celebration dedicated to web browsing. \nTim Berners-Lee developed the World Wide Web (“WWW” or the “Web”) in the year 1989 at the CERN centre located in Geneva\, as a way for him to interact with co-workers via hyperlinks. A quarter of a century later\, WWW has become the principal means of transaction\, interaction and communication among the humans\, opening the door of possibility for people in ways that would have been unthinkable to the previous generations. The World Wide Web is a global information medium which users can read and write via computers connected to the Internet. The term is often mistakenly used as a synonym for the Internet itself and often called “the Internet”\, but the Web is a service that operates over the Internet\, just as email (also e-mail) and Usenet also does. The history of the Internet dates back significantly further than that of the World Wide Web. Web is the global information system. \nLinks:\nWorld Wide Web Day\n\n30th Anniversary of the World Wide Web

SUMMARY:#SysAdminDay System Administrator Appreciation Day / Systeembeheerdersdag 2025
DESCRIPTION:System Administrator Appreciation Day\, also known as Sysadmin Day\, SysAdminDay\, or Sysmas\, is an annual event celebrated on the last Friday in July. \nThe event exists to show appreciation for the work of sysadmins and other IT workers. Your network is secure\, your computer is up and running\, and your printer is jam-free. Why? Because you’ve got an awesome sysadmin (or maybe a whole IT department) keeping your business up and running. So say IT loud; say IT proud … Friday\, July 26\, 2024\, is the 25th annual System Administrator Appreciation Day. On this special international day\, give your System Administrator something that shows that you truly appreciate their hard work and dedication. (All day Friday\, 24 hours\, your own local time-zone). Let’s face it\, System Administrators get no respect 364 days a year. This is the day that all fellow System Administrators across the globe\, will be showered with expensive sports cars and large piles of cash in appreciation of their diligent work. But seriously\, we are asking for a nice token gift and some public acknowledgement. It’s the least you could do. Consider all the daunting tasks and long hours (weekends too.) Let’s be honest\, sometimes we don’t know our System Administrators as well as they know us. Remember this is one day to recognize your System Administrator for their workplace contributions and to promote professional excellence. Thank them for all the things they do for you and your business. \nLinks:\nSystem Administrator Appreciation Day
