Dat zijn de twee deelvragen die het rapport ‘Wikken en weten‘ behandelt. Voor het onderzoek analyseerde het Rathenau Instituut circa 8.500 vragenlijsten die werden ingevuld door een representatieve steekproef van de Nederlandse samenleving. Ook organiseerde het instituut zeven focusgroepen\, waarin deelnemers verschillende socialemediaberichten kregen voorgelegd. Of mensen misinformatie op sociale media geloven\, hangt voor een belangrijk deel samen met hun ervaringen in de offline wereld. Dat klinkt misschien als een ver-van-mijn-bedshow\, maar het raakt aan een vraag die jou wél aangaat: als AI straks steeds meer werk overneemt\, wie wordt daar dan beter van? Een opvallend cijfer om mee te beginnen: bij Anthropic\, het bedrijf achter AI-assistent Claude\, wordt sinds mei meer dan tachtig procent van alle nieuwe programmacode niet door mensen geschreven\, maar door Claude zelf. Een doorsnee ontwikkelaar levert er acht keer zoveel werk als in 2024. De mens bepaalt nog wat er moet gebeuren en controleert het resultaat\, maar het typwerk is grotendeels uitbesteed aan de AI. Anthropic publiceerde die cijfers in de  publicatie ‘When AI builds itself’\, en concludeert: AI helpt inmiddels bij het bouwen van AI. Doorgetrokken naar de toekomst wijst dat richting iets wat onderzoekers recursieve zelfverbetering noemen\, oftewel AI die zelfstandig zijn eigen\, betere opvolger ontwerpt. In gewone taal: een AI die een nog slimmere AI maakt\, die op zijn beurt weer een slimmere maakt\, in een steeds hoger tempo. Zover zijn we nog niet\, en onvermijdelijk is het ook niet\, schrijft het bedrijf. Jim Cox van cybersecuritybedrijf Proofpoint deelt zijn tips met ons. Hij schreef ze speciaal voor thuiswerkers\, maar ze gelden net zo goed voor de particuliere gebruiker. \nTips voor wachtwoordbeheer\n• Wijzig wachtwoorden regelmatig en hergebruik ze nooit. Als je denkt dat er een kans is dat je data gevaar loopt\, neem deze voorzorgsmaatregel dan direct en stel je manager op de hoogte van het beveiligingsprobleem.\n• Schrijf nooit je wachtwoorden ergens op. Maar als je je wachtwoord dan toch moet opschrijven\, zorg er dan in ieder geval voor dat deze niet zichtbaar is.\n• Gebruik een wachtwoordmanager om willekeurige wachtwoorden te maken die veilig worden opgeslagen\, gecodeerd en toegankelijk zijn op alle persoonlijke apparaten. Dergelijke software is relatief eenvoudig te implementeren en beschikbaar als een cloud-gebaseerde dienst\, waardoor het een verstandige investering is voor bedrijven\n• Implementeer\, indien beschikbaar\, tweefactor-authenticatie op accounts en apparaten om apparaten verder te beveiligen. Dit is vooral belangrijk voor personeel met toegang tot gevoelige informatie. \nTips voor het aanmaken van wachtwoorden\n• Wachtwoorden moeten uit ten minste 12 tekens bestaan\, met minimaal twee of drie verschillende soorten tekens op willekeurige plaatsen. Vermijd hoofdletters aan het begin en cijfers of symbolen aan het eind. DESCRIPTION:The strong and continuous increase of AI-based services leads to the steady proliferation of AI data centres worldwide with the unavoidable escalation of their power consumption\, it is unknown how this energy demand for computational purposes will impact the surrounding environment\, scientists report in the paper ‘The data heat island effect: quantifying the impact of AI data centers in a warming world‘. \nData centres built to power AIs produce so much heat that they can raise the surface temperature of the land around them by several degrees – creating so-called data centre heat islands that may already be affecting up to 340 million people. The number of data centres built around the world is forecast to rise enormously\, data centre capacity will double between 2025 and 2030 – with AI expected to account for half that demand. Andrea Marinoni at the University of Cambridge\, UK\, and his colleagues saw that the amount of energy needed to run a data centre had been steadily increasing of late and was likely to “explode” in the coming years\, so wanted to quantify the impact. The researchers took satellite measurements of land surface temperatures over the past 20 years and cross-referenced them against the geographical coordinates of more than 8400 AI data centres. Recognising that surface temperature could be affected by other factors\, the researchers chose to focus their investigation on data centres located away from densely populated areas. They discovered that land surface temperatures increased by an average of 2°C in the months after an AI data centre started operations. In the most extreme cases\, the increase in temperature was 9.1°C. The effect wasn’t limited to the immediate surroundings of the data centres: the team found increased temperatures up to 10 kilometres away. Seven kilometres away\, there was only a 30 per cent reduction in the intensity. Using population data\, the researchers estimate that more than 340 million people live within 10 kilometres of data centres\, so live in a place that is warmer than it would be if the data centre hadn’t been built there. Marinoni says that areas including the Bajío region in Mexico and the Aragon province in Spain saw a 2°C temperature increase in the 20 years between 2004 and 2024 that couldn’t otherwise be explained. Chris Preist at the University of Bristol\, UK\, says the results may be more nuanced than they first appear\, suggesting that the building being heated by sunlight may be part of the effect. Either way\, the data centre is still increasing the ground temperature\, says Marinoni. \nLinks:\nAI data centres can warm surrounding areas by up to 9.1°C

SUMMARY:Labor market impacts of AI: A new measure and early evidence - publication
DESCRIPTION:The rapid diffusion of AI is generating a wave of research measuring and forecasting its impacts on labor markets. \nBut the track record of past approaches gives reason for humility. For example\, a prominent attempt to measure job offshorability identified roughly a quarter of US jobs as vulnerable\, but a decade on\, most of those jobs maintained healthy employment growth. The government’s own occupational growth forecasts\, while directionally correct\, have added little predictive value beyond linear extrapolation of past trends. Even in hindsight\, the impact of major economic disruptions on the labor market is often unclear. Studies on the employment effects of industrial robots reach opposing conclusions\, and the scale of job losses attributed to the China trade shock continues to be debated. In the paper ‘Labor market impacts of AI: A new measure and early evidence‘\, a new framework for understanding AI’s labor market impacts is presented\, and is tested against early data\, finding limited evidence that AI has affected employment to date. Our goal is to establish an approach for measuring how AI is affecting employment\, and to revisit these analyses periodically. This approach won’t capture every channel through which AI could reshape the labor market\, but by laying this groundwork now\, before meaningful effects have emerged\, we hope future findings will more reliably identify economic disruption than post-hoc analyses.It is possible that the impacts of AI will be unmistakable.
