SUMMARY:EFF Copyright Week 2024
DESCRIPTION:EFF Copyright Week is a series of actions and discussions supporting key principles that should guide copyright policy. \nEvery day this week\, various groups are taking on different elements of copyright law and policy\, addressing what’s at stake and what we need to do to make sure that copyright promotes creativity and innovation. Copyright law affects so much of our daily lives\, and new technologies have only helped make everyone more and more aware of it. For example\, while 1998’s Digital Millennium Copyright Act helped spur the growth of platforms for creating and sharing art\, music and literature\, it also helped make the phrase “blocked due to a claim by the copyright holder” so ubiquitous. Copyright law helps shape the movies we watch\, the books we read\, and the music we listen to. But it also impacts everything from who can fix a tractor to what information is available to us to when we communicate online. Given that power\, it’s crucial that copyright law and policy serve everyone. Unfortunately\, that’s not the way it tends to work. Instead\, copyright law is often treated as the exclusive domain of major media and entertainment industries. \nIndividual artists don’t often find that copyright does what it is meant to do\, i.e. “promote the progress of science and useful arts” by giving them a way to live off of the work they’ve done. The promise of the internet was to help eliminate barriers between creators and audiences\, so that voices that traditional gatekeepers ignored could still find success. Through copyright\, those gatekeepers have found ways to once again control what we see. In 2012\, a diverse coalition of Internet users\, non-profit groups\, and Internet companies defeated the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the PROTECT IP Act (PIPA)\, bills that would have forced Internet companies to blacklist and block websites accused of hosting copyright-infringing content. These were bills that would have made censorship very easy\, all in the name of copyright protection. This coalition continues to fight for a version of copyright that truly serves the public interest. And so\, every year\, EFF and a number of diverse organizations participate in Copyright Week. Each year\, we pick five copyright issues to highlight and promote a set of principles that should guide copyright law and policy. \nLinks:\nCopyright Week \nEFF: More Than a Decade Later\, Site-Blocking Is Still Censorship \nWikimedia: Advocating for Freedom of Panorama in South Africa

SUMMARY:Data Privacy Week 2024
DESCRIPTION:Our data is collected everyday — your computer\, smartphone\, and pretty much every other internet-connected device gathers data\, which might even include your wristwatch or car! \nBut you often have some choices when it comes to how this data is collected\, shared\, and sold. Personal data can be stored indefinably. Data can be used to make inferences about your socioeconomic status\, demographic information\, and preferences. Even seemingly innocuous information\, such as your favorite restaurants or items you purchase online\, can be used to make assumptions about you and your habits. Many companies have the opportunity to monitor the data of their users and consumers\, and they sell the data for profit. If this reality is sending chills down your spine\, don’t fret! You can take steps to control how your data is shared. You can’t lock down all of your data — even if you stop using the internet\, credit card companies record your purchases and the government knows your Social Security number. But you can take simple steps to manage it and take more control of who it is shared with. \nLinks:\nData Privacy Week

SUMMARY:2023 Quantum Threat Timeline Report - publication
DESCRIPTION:The global race to develop quantum computers has critical implications for cybersecurity and organizations must pay attention. \nMitigation of the quantum threat to cybersecurity requires a transition to cryptology that is resilient against quantum attacks – implemented carefully and not rushed – evaluated based on organizations’ specific shelf lives\, migration times and risk appetites. The 2023 Quantum Threat Timeline Report\, a collaboration between GRI and evolutionQ\, synthesizes 37 leading experts’ insights on the current state of quantum computing and the threat it poses for cybersecurity. This fifth installment in the annual reporting explores the many factors that affect the quantum threat timeline\, including the skyrocketing level of investment in quantum computing and related technologies. The good news is that new “quantum safe” cryptographic solutions exist that can safeguard critical data and systems. However\, transitioning to them is complex and requires substantial time to avoid pitfalls. This report quantifies the urgency for mitigating the looming quantum threat and will be of value to those responsible for managing cyber-risk. A proactive approach to the quantum-safe transition will prevent gaps in cybersecurity and reduce risks tied to hasty implementation.

SUMMARY:#DayAgainstDRM / IDAD 2023
DESCRIPTION:Day Against DRM (IDAD)\, sometimes called anti-DRM day\, is a grassroots international observance of protests against digital rights management (DRM) technology. \nThe event is intended as “a counterpoint to the pro-DRM message broadcast by powerful media and software companies” and aims to draw attention to DRM’s anti-consumer aspects. The Defective by Design site started a tagging campaign against Netflix\, an online commercial stream service that developed new implementations of DRM for web\, to challenge W3C’s decision of introducing DRM to web technologies. Despite the popularity of the campaign\, W3C didn’t step back and showed greenlight for DRM. \nThis 2023 campaign draws attention to the ways libraries\, and by extension\, their patrons\, are mistreated by corporations like OverDrive\, makers of the “Libby” app that have a near monopolistic control over digital lending in the United States. Services like OverDrive and Follet Destiny mandate “controlled digital lending” schemes\, imposing artificial scarcity on a digital good. They also require monthly or annual fees in order to have the privilege of having a book or piece of media in circulation. Should the library struggle with paying its licensing fees\, like the New York Public Library\, their “access” is “rescinded.” \nThere once was a time when you could donate a book to the library to give others in your community access to it. There once was a time when libraries owned the works that they provide to the public\, rather than finding themselves trapped by unethical technology and predatory licensing fees. If we want to ensure that our cultural legacy lasts\, we need to focus our attention on corporations like OverDrive\, who make a living out of leeching on libraries\, which are already underfunded. In this year’s IDAD\, we’ll do our best to remedy this. How to participate: \n\nPledge not to use Libby\, Follett Destiny\, or similar apps\, and let your local library know that you support them\, not corporations.\nLet us and the world know why libraries are important to you in a short video posted to social media. You can use the hashtag #DayAgainstDRM.\nChallenge yourself to go a “Day without DRM\,” and refuse to engage with media peddled by Disney+\, Amazon\, Peacock\, and others that don’t respect your digital autonomy.\n\nLinks:\nDay Against DRM

SUMMARY:#BlueBeanieDay 2023
DESCRIPTION:  \nBlue Beanie Day is an annual international celebration of web standards which began in 2007\, originated by Douglas Vos and popularized by Jeffrey Zeldman\, the author of ‘Designing with Web Standards‘. \nThe commemoration\, which is accompanied by web developers sharing photographs of themselves in blue beanies\, seeks to raise awareness of web design features such as progressive enhancement and accessible\, semantic markup and “fight Web Standards Apathy”. Users use the hashtag #BlueBeanieDay\, change their social media avatars to show themselves in blue headgear\, and share information and links to content promoting the open web and online accessibility. The origin of the name of the holiday is the image of Jeffrey Zeldman on the cover of his book wearing a blue knit cap. Over the years\, the Blue Beanie Day also became an action day for web accessibility\, for which the correct use of web standards is a basic requirement. \nLinks:\nBlue Beanie Day 2023\n\nBlue Beanie Day

SUMMARY:#AaronSwartzDay and Hackathon 2023
DESCRIPTION:Aaron Swartz Day was founded\, in 2013\, after the death of Aaron Hillel Swartz (November 8\, 1986 – January 11\, 2013) an American computer programmer\, entrepreneur\, writer\, political organizer\, and Internet hacktivist. \nAaron Swartz Day has these combined goals: \n\nTo draw attention to what happened to Aaron\, in the hopes of stopping it from happening to anyone else.\n\nThis includes clarifying that\, although Aaron was a hacker\, he didn’t hack MIT.\n\n\nTo provide a yearly showcase of many of the projects that were  started by Aaron before his death.\n\nSecureDrop\nOpen Library\n\n\nTo provide a yearly showcase of new projects that were directly inspired by Aaron and his work.\n\nA few Aaron-inspired examples from this year’s event include:\n\nThe Pursuance Project (by Barrett Brown & Steve Phillips)\nOpen Archive (by Natalie Cadranel)\nJason Leopold’s Freedom of Information Act Request (FOIA) activism (article from 2013)\n\n\n\n\n\nAs a programmer\, Swartz helped develop the web feed format RSS; the technical architecture for Creative Commons\, an organization dedicated to creating copyright licenses; the website framework web.py; and Markdown\, a lightweight markup language format. Swartz was involved in the development of the social news aggregation website Reddit until he departed from the company in 2007. He is often credited as a martyr and a prodigy\, and his work focused on civic awareness and activism. After Reddit was sold to Condé Nast Publications in 2006\, Swartz became more involved in activism\, helping launch the Progressive Change Campaign Committee in 2009. In 2010\, he became a research fellow at Harvard University’s Safra Research Lab on Institutional Corruption\, directed by Lawrence Lessig. He founded the online group Demand Progress\, known for its campaign against the Stop Online Piracy Act. On January 6\, 2011\, Swartz was arrested by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) police on state breaking-and-entering charges\, after connecting a computer to the MIT network in an unmarked and unlocked closet and setting it to download academic journal articles systematically from JSTOR using a guest user account issued to him by MIT. Federal prosecutors\, led by Carmen Ortiz\, later charged him with two counts of wire fraud and eleven violations of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act\, carrying a cumulative maximum penalty of $1 million in fines\, 35 years in prison\, asset forfeiture\, restitution\, and supervised release. Swartz declined a plea bargain under which he would have served six months in federal prison. Two days after the prosecution rejected a counter-offer by Swartz\, he was found dead in his Brooklyn apartment. In 2013\, Swartz was inducted posthumously into the Internet Hall of Fame. \nLinks:\nAaron Swartz Day

SUMMARY:Last Chance to fix eIDAS: Secret EU law threatens Internet security - open letter

SUMMARY:Allereerste live stream ter wereld (1994) 2023
DESCRIPTION:Op 4 november 1994 werd vanuit podium Simplon in Groningen de allereerste live stream ter wereld geproduceerd. \nLinks:\nHieperdepiep! SUMMARY:AI Safety Summit | AISS 2023
DESCRIPTION:Towards an ethical and responsible use of AI. \nWe have seen extraordinary advances in the capabilities and use of artificial intelligence (AI). AI holds the potential to multiply productivity in many sectors and to improve public services\, but it could also threaten global stability and undermine our values. These risks are the topic of the AI Safety Summit hosted by the UK government (1-2 November 2023). The UN Secretary-General has asked experts in his AI Advisory Body to issue recommendations on the international governance of artificial intelligence\, its risks and challenges and how to leverage AI to accelerate the delivery of the SDGs. \nLinks:\nAI Safety Summit \nTowards an ethical and responsible use of AI

SUMMARY:Bescherm Nederlandse burgers tegen online volgen en bespieden - petitie

SUMMARY:Sensibiliseringscampagne cyberveiligheid 2023 : Phishing\, 't zit in de details!
\nLinks:\nSafeonweb\n\nSafeonweb browser extensie

SUMMARY:#Linux - first release (1991) 2023
DESCRIPTION:Linux (/ˈlinʊks/ (listen) LEEN-uuks or /ˈlɪnʊks/ LIN-uuks) is a family of open-source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel\, an operating system kernel first released on September 17\, 1991\, by Linus Torvalds. \nLinux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution. Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries\, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word “Linux” in their name\, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name “GNU/Linux” to emphasize the importance of GNU software\, causing some controversy. Popular Linux distributions include Debian\, Fedora\, and Ubuntu. Commercial distributions include Red Hat Enterprise Linux and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server. Desktop Linux distributions include a windowing system such as X11 or Wayland\, and a desktop environment such as GNOME or KDE Plasma. Distributions intended for servers may omit graphics altogether\, or include a solution stack such as LAMP. Because Linux is freely redistributable\, anyone may create a distribution for any purpose. \nLinux was originally developed for personal computers based on the Intel x86 architecture\, but has since been ported to more platforms than any other operating system. Because of the dominance of the Linux-based Android on smartphones\, Linux also has the largest installed base of all general-purpose operating systems. Although Linux is used by only around 2.3 percent of desktop computers\, the Chromebook\, which runs the Linux kernel-based Chrome OS\, dominates the US K–12 education market and represents nearly 20 percent of sub-$300 notebook sales in the US. Linux is the leading operating system on servers (over 96.4% of the top 1 million web servers’ operating systems are Linux)\, leads other big iron systems such as mainframe computers\, and is the only OS used on TOP500 supercomputers (since November 2017\, having gradually eliminated all competitors). \nLinux also runs on embedded systems\, i.e. devices whose operating system is typically built into the firmware and is highly tailored to the system. This includes routers\, automation controls\, smart home technology\, televisions (Samsung and LG Smart TVs use Tizen and WebOS\, respectively)\, automobiles (for example\, Tesla\, Audi\, Mercedes-Benz\, Hyundai\, and Toyota all rely on Linux)\, digital video recorders\, video game consoles\, and smartwatches. The Falcon 9’s and the Dragon 2‘s avionics use a customized version of Linux. Linux is one of the most prominent examples of free and open-source software collaboration. The source code may be used\, modified and distributed commercially or non-commercially by anyone under the terms of its respective licenses\, such as the GNU General Public License. \nLinks:\nThe Linux Documentation Project \nDistroWatch

SUMMARY:From black holes to quantum computing - with Marika Taylor
DESCRIPTION:How can black holes help us understand the workings of a quantum computer? \nBlack holes are believed to be the most efficient quantum computers naturally existing in our universe. Standard computers do not have the capabilities to quickly solve some of the problems and unanswered questions facing researchers\, but black holes may be able to provide insight into how quantum computers work and facilitate their development. In this talk\, discover how a quantum computer makes use of the quantum states of subatomic particles to both store and process information and explore the long-standing question of what happens if you fall into a black hole\, from a new quantum perspective. \nLinks:\nBlack holes and quantum computers
