SUMMARY:Joint statement of security and privacy scientists and researchers on Age Assurance - open letter
DESCRIPTION:Hundreds of computer researchers have signed an open letter calling for more careful public review of online age verification requirements and the privacy costs. \nSocial media is going the way of alcohol\, gambling\, and other social sins: Societies are deciding it’s no longer kid stuff. Lawmakers point to compulsive use\, exposure to harmful content\, and mounting concerns about adolescent mental health. So\, many propose to set a minimum age\, usually 13 or 16. In cases when regulators demand real enforcement rather than symbolic rules\, platforms run into a basic technical problem. The only way to prove that someone is old enough to use a site is to collect personal data about who they are. And the only way to prove that you checked is to keep the data indefinitely. Age-restriction laws push platforms toward intrusive verification systems that often directly conflict with modern data-privacy law. This is the age-verification trap. Strong enforcement of age rules undermines data privacy. \nLinks:\nThe Age-Verification Trap > Verifying user’s ages undermines everyone’s data protection

SUMMARY:Day for Digital Learning 2026
DESCRIPTION:The International Day of Digital Learning\, designated by UNESCO Member States in 2023\, is an occasion to celebrate and share information about the many ways schools\, teachers\, learners and families are using digital technologies to improve education in line with national and international goals\, while simultaneously taking steps to mitigate the considerable risks and challenges that these technologies introduce. \nIn 2026\, International Day for Digital Learning focuses on building digital futures for public education. This theme stems from a simple question: Where are the digital spaces and resources to support public education online? Far too often\, the answer is nowhere. In innumerable national and sub-national contexts\, students\, teachers and parents do not know where to find reliable digital resources to support learning and teaching. Fortunately\, a growing number of education systems\, in high and low income contexts alike\, are making investments to extend public education into online and digital environments. These investments complement and enrich the essential work that happens in schools and with teachers. The 2026 International Day for Digital Learning is an invitation to showcase where and how countries\, provinces\, and school districts are building – and using – digital commons to strengthen public education and improve its outcomes. In line with the 2026 theme\, UNESCO\, together with UNICEF and the  International Telecommunication Union (ITU)\, will launch the Charter for Public Digital Learning Platforms on the International Day. The UNESCO-UNICEF-ITU Charter puts forward normative guidance to help public authorities steer the design\, governance and continuous refinement of public digital learning platforms. Join UNESCO in celebrating the International Day by bringing renewed attention to efforts to ensure that public education is supported digitally and virtually\, as well as in the vital physical and social spaces of schools. \nLinks:\nDay for Digital Learning

SUMMARY:The data heat island effect: quantifying the impact of AI data centers in a warming world - publication
DESCRIPTION:The strong and continuous increase of AI-based services leads to the steady proliferation of AI data centres worldwide with the unavoidable escalation of their power consumption\, it is unknown how this energy demand for computational purposes will impact the surrounding environment\, scientists report in the paper ‘The data heat island effect: quantifying the impact of AI data centers in a warming world‘. \nData centres built to power AIs produce so much heat that they can raise the surface temperature of the land around them by several degrees – creating so-called data centre heat islands that may already be affecting up to 340 million people. The number of data centres built around the world is forecast to rise enormously\, data centre capacity will double between 2025 and 2030 – with AI expected to account for half that demand. Andrea Marinoni at the University of Cambridge\, UK\, and his colleagues saw that the amount of energy needed to run a data centre had been steadily increasing of late and was likely to “explode” in the coming years\, so wanted to quantify the impact. The researchers took satellite measurements of land surface temperatures over the past 20 years and cross-referenced them against the geographical coordinates of more than 8400 AI data centres. Recognising that surface temperature could be affected by other factors\, the researchers chose to focus their investigation on data centres located away from densely populated areas. They discovered that land surface temperatures increased by an average of 2°C in the months after an AI data centre started operations. In the most extreme cases\, the increase in temperature was 9.1°C. The effect wasn’t limited to the immediate surroundings of the data centres: the team found increased temperatures up to 10 kilometres away. Seven kilometres away\, there was only a 30 per cent reduction in the intensity. Using population data\, the researchers estimate that more than 340 million people live within 10 kilometres of data centres\, so live in a place that is warmer than it would be if the data centre hadn’t been built there. Marinoni says that areas including the Bajío region in Mexico and the Aragon province in Spain saw a 2°C temperature increase in the 20 years between 2004 and 2024 that couldn’t otherwise be explained. Chris Preist at the University of Bristol\, UK\, says the results may be more nuanced than they first appear\, suggesting that the building being heated by sunlight may be part of the effect. Either way\, the data centre is still increasing the ground temperature\, says Marinoni. \nLinks:\nAI data centres can warm surrounding areas by up to 9.1°C

SUMMARY:#WorldBackupDay Wereld Back-Up Dag 2026
Maak tenminste één Backup op World Backup Day! \nLinks:\nWorld Backup Day \nVandaag is het World Backup Day

SUMMARY:Tell Meta: Eyewear\, Not Spywear - petition
DESCRIPTION:Imagine if a stranger walking past you on the sidewalk could know everything about you with one glance: Your name. Your workplace. Your politics. Your health concerns. Even your favorite coffee shop. \nThis would be a massive invasion of privacy – and it’s exactly what Meta plans to enable with their internet-connected glasses. Meta intends to add facial recognition technology to their glasses\, enabling anyone wearing the product to immediately and invisibly identify strangers. Although specific details aren’t yet public\, Meta sits on vast databases\, including millions of personal profiles on Facebook\, Instagram\, and Threads\, and has long sought to power facial recognition tech with our data. This technology isn’t just a breach of privacy. It paves a path for stalking\, harassment\, and targeted intimidation. The technology is ripe for abuse from everyday people and government actors alike. These glasses are dangerous. They must be stopped. Tell Meta: Your glasses shouldn’t know our names. Demand privacy protections today. \nLinks:\nTell Meta: Eyewear\, Not Spywear

SUMMARY:#IoT #IoTDay #IOTDAY 2026 / Dag van het Internet der Dingen 2026
DESCRIPTION:IoTDay is an open invitation to the Internet of Things (IoT) Community to set up an event\, a lunch\, a talk with the neigborhood on what IoT is and what it means in everyday life for all of us. \nIoTDay and is an open invitation to the Internet of Things Community to set up an event\, a lunch\, a talk with the neighborhood on what IoT is and what it means in everyday life for all of us. IoTDay started in 2010 organised by the IoT Council. IoTDay is an opportunity for the IoT Community to show that it cares for people\, for the environment\, for animals … and for machines as well. The global IoT Day was started by the #IoT Council in 2010\, with the goal to brainstorm on the emerging IoT Topics and further the discourse in EU & abroad. IoT Day in April has since been held annually and with a wide range of participants\, growing to hundreds of locations across the world\, with a variety of gatherings in places ranging from conference halls\, online meetings\, bars and cafes\, Meetups\, classrooms and parks. The point of the IoTDay exchanges is to bring IoT/AI Trends out into the open to and with citizens and industry experts to collaborate on developments across borders. Every year IoTDay is an open invitation to the wider Internet of Things Community to set up an event\, a lunch\, a talk with the neighbourhood on what #IoT is about and what it means in everyday life for all of us now. IoTDay in Brussels with a special celebration this time around is organised by the IoT Council and its members. Leading up to the fifteenth anniversary in Spring 2025\, we are having a variety of events online and in person to celebrate the progress in global IoT Technologies and to discuss the range of current issues still needing to be resolved going forward\, especially with the influx of AI and lack of security in developments\, as well as conflicting standards around the world. IoTDay theme 2026: The conversation we need now. \nLinks:\nIoT Day

SUMMARY:EFFecting Change Livestream Series: Can't Stop the Signal (TV webcast)
DESCRIPTION:Internet shutdowns have become a powerful weapon. \nYears of digital repression in Iran have intensified during the current conflict with Israel and the U.S.. The Iranian government has once again shut down internet access\, isolating millions\, silencing dissent\, and blocking information about human rights abuses. In January 2026\, nationwide blackouts were used to conceal violations and suppress the largest protests since the 2022 Woman\, Life\, Freedom uprising. This is not unique to Iran. Around the world\, governments are pulling the plug to control narratives and crush resistance. But access to the internet is a human right—and people continue to find ways to stay connected. Join EFF and Amnesty International for a deep dive into the black hole of internet censorship\, and learn how journalists\, emergency responders\, and ordinary people can persist. \nLinks:\nEFFecting Change Livestream Series: Can’t Stop the Signal

\nLinks:\nGadget Guide: World Password Day \nWorld Password Day 2026 \n6 tekenen dat iemand toegang heeft tot jouw accounts
