SUMMARY:EFFecting Change Livestream Series: Who the Machine Serves (TV webcast)
DESCRIPTION:Nicole Ozer and Cory Doctorow in conversation on Artificial intelligence (AI)\, tackling what needs to happen now to ensure AI actually works for everyone\, not just those in power. \nThe important thing about a technology isn’t just what it does: it’s who it does it for and who it does it to. AI can help or harm people\, and EFF was created to make sure it helps. We are at a critical juncture to ensure that AI is developed and used in ways that respect fundamental rights and works for those who build it\, use it\, and are affected by it. SUMMARY:DEF CON 34
DESCRIPTION:DEF CON (also written as DEFCON\, Defcon\, or DC) is a hacker convention held annually in Las Vegas\, Nevada. \nThe first DEF CON took place in June 1993 and today many attendees at DEF CON include computer security professionals\, journalists\, lawyers\, federal government employees\, security researchers\, students\, and hackers with a general interest in software\, computer architecture\, hardware modification\, conference badges\, and anything else that can be “hacked”. The event consists of several tracks of speakers about computer and hacking-related subjects\, as well as cyber-security challenges and competitions (known as hacking wargames). Contests held during the event are extremely varied and can range from creating the longest Wi-Fi connection to finding the most effective way to cool a beer in the Nevada heat. Other contests\, past and present\, include lockpicking\, robotics-related contests\, art\, slogan\, coffee wars\, scavenger hunt\, and Capture the Flag. Capture the Flag (CTF) is perhaps the best known of these contests and is a hacking competition where teams of hackers attempt to attack and defend computers and networks using software and network structures. CTF has been emulated at other hacking conferences as well as in academic and military contexts (as red team exercises). Federal law enforcement agents from the FBI\, DoD\, United States Postal Inspection Service\, DHS (via CISA) and other agencies regularly attend DEF CON. Some have considered DEF CON to be the “world’s largest” hacker conference given its attendee size and the number of other conferences modeling themselves after it. \nLinks:\nDEF CON 34 \nEFF at BSidesLV\, Black Hat\, and DEF CON 👨‍💻

SUMMARY:#WorldWideWebDay 2026
DESCRIPTION:Klik op afbeelding om te lezen\nWorld Wide Web Day is celebrated on August 1st every year\, it is a global celebration dedicated to web browsing. \nTim Berners-Lee developed the World Wide Web (“WWW” or the “Web”) in the year 1989 at the CERN centre located in Geneva\, as a way for him to interact with co-workers via hyperlinks. A quarter of a century later\, WWW has become the principal means of transaction\, interaction and communication among the humans\, opening the door of possibility for people in ways that would have been unthinkable to the previous generations. The World Wide Web is a global information medium which users can read and write via computers connected to the Internet. The term is often mistakenly used as a synonym for the Internet itself and often called “the Internet”\, but the Web is a service that operates over the Internet\, just as email (also e-mail) and Usenet also does. The history of the Internet dates back significantly further than that of the World Wide Web. Web is the global information system. \nLinks:\nWorld Wide Web Day

SUMMARY:#SysAdminDay System Administrator Appreciation Day / Systeembeheerdersdag 2026
DESCRIPTION:System Administrator Appreciation Day\, also known as Sysadmin Day\, SysAdminDay\, or Sysmas\, is an annual event celebrated on the last Friday in July. \nThe event exists to show appreciation for the work of sysadmins and other IT workers. Your network is secure\, your computer is up and running\, and your printer is jam-free. Why? Because you’ve got an awesome sysadmin (or maybe a whole IT department) keeping your business up and running. So say IT loud; say IT proud … Friday\, July 26\, 2024\, is the 25th annual System Administrator Appreciation Day. On this special international day\, give your System Administrator something that shows that you truly appreciate their hard work and dedication. (All day Friday\, 24 hours\, your own local time-zone). Let’s face it\, System Administrators get no respect 364 days a year. This is the day that all fellow System Administrators across the globe\, will be showered with expensive sports cars and large piles of cash in appreciation of their diligent work. But seriously\, we are asking for a nice token gift and some public acknowledgement. It’s the least you could do. Consider all the daunting tasks and long hours (weekends too.) Let’s be honest\, sometimes we don’t know our System Administrators as well as they know us. Remember this is one day to recognize your System Administrator for their workplace contributions and to promote professional excellence. Thank them for all the things they do for you and your business. \nLinks:\nSystem Administrator Appreciation Day

SUMMARY:Open Kaart Overheid – stop profilering en digitale uitsluiting!
DESCRIPTION:Bits of Freedom (BoF) brengt in kaart hoe onze overheid moet stoppen met discriminerende algoritmes\, maak samen met BoF de atlas Open Kaart Overheid!

SUMMARY:EFFecting Change Livestream Series: If You Own It\, Why Can't You Fix It? (TV webcast)
DESCRIPTION:Owning something should mean more than just bragging rights and a receipt. \nCorporations are making it harder for you to repair the devices and products you already own\, and forcing you to pay them again for repairs and replacements you don’t actually need.
\nHelpt AI jou\, of help jij AI? \nLinks:\nLet them eat slop

SUMMARY:Security incident disclosure — July 2026 - publicatie / publication

SUMMARY:We Must Act Now - publication
DESCRIPTION:“We Must Act Now”: Sixteen Nobel Laureates Join Leading Economists and AI Researchers in Call to Prepare for AI’s Economic Transformation. \nStatement warns that Artificial intelligence (AI) could drive an economic transformation larger than the Industrial Revolution — on a vastly shorter timeline — and urges economists\, policymakers\, and technology leaders to prepare. A group of leading economists and AI researchers\, including sixteen Nobel Laureates\, released “We Must Act Now: A Statement on AI’s Transformation of the Economy\,” calling for urgent preparation for the economic impacts of radically more powerful AI. The statement\, organized by economists Erik Brynjolfsson\, Ajay Agrawal\, Anton Korinek\, and Tom Cunningham\, warns that increasingly capable AI systems could reshape the economy at unprecedented speed. While AI offers enormous opportunities to improve productivity and living standards\, it also raises important questions for workers\, firms\, and public institutions. The statement calls on economists\, policymakers\, and technology leaders to deepen research on AI’s economic impacts and to begin building the policies and institutions needed to ensure AI complements human capabilities and benefits society. \nLinks:\n“We Must Act Now”: Sixteen Nobel Laureates Join Leading Economists and AI Researchers in Call to Prepare for AI’s Economic Transformation \nDe week waarin de makers van AI alarm sloegen \nGlobal Dialogue on AI Governance – first session

SUMMARY:When AI builds itself - publication
\nLinks:\nAI begint zichzelf te bouwen (en overheden worden er nerveus van) \nAll signs point to Trump pushing AI growth / A pause on AI development would be very good business for Anthropic \nKunstmatige intelligentie / Artificial intelligence : Kunstmatige intelligentie ontwikkelt zichzelf

SUMMARY:Leiden Declaration on Artificial Intelligence and Mathematics - publication
DESCRIPTION:Mathematicians declare math a human endeavor amid AI threat\, International Mathematical Union endorses warning about tech industry influence. \nMathematicians warned against rising tech industry influence in a declaration describing the many challenges that AI poses to mathematics research. The timing of the declaration comes two weeks after OpenAI publicized one of its AI models as having disproved an 80-year-old mathematical conjecture in geometry. The declaration was developed by a working group of 16 researchers over eight months following a conference held at Leiden University in the Netherlands in September 2025. Published on June 2\, 2026\, the resulting Leiden Declaration on Artificial Intelligence and Mathematics has been endorsed by the International Mathematical Union—the international non-governmental organization that hosts conferences and oversees the most prestigious prizes in mathematics such as the Fields Medal. \nLinks:\nMathematicians declare math a human endeavor amid AI threat \nSign the Declaration

SUMMARY:An open declaration: The European Social Stack. Open Social Platforms and Private Messaging
DESCRIPTION:Social media’s impact on society and citizens clearly shows the need for change. \nEurope has a strong ecosystem of social companies and a deep well of expertise in designing and operating social protocols. Europe is building on this to move away from large monopolistic platforms with their authoritarian governance and editorial positions\, and are joining forces to establish a diverse and resilient information infrastructure. Together\, Europe will protect people and institutions from interference by these platforms. What’s more\, Europe will bring thousands of jobs and billions of euros that social media generates to our continent\, to circulate that revenue in our own thriving business ecosystem. From this perspective\, open European platforms and protocols such as the Fediverse (Mastodon\, PeerTube\, or Mobilizon)\, the Atmosphere (Eurosky\, Flashes\, Tangled\, or Web Tiles) and Private Messaging systems (like Matrix or XMPP) are complementary solutions for Europe\, with shared common goals. Add your name and join 64 organisations and 430 individuals\, all submissions are reviewed by an editor before appearing on the public list.

SUMMARY:Unlawful by Design: Exposing the Human Rights Costs of Generative AI - publicatie
DESCRIPTION:In het rapport ‘Unlawful by Design: Exposing the Human Rights Costs of Generative AI‘ documenteert Amnesty International ernstige risico’s bij het grootschalig ‘scrapen’ (automatisch gegevens van internet halen) en verwerken van data.

SUMMARY:#rp26 re:publica Berlin 2026
\nLinks:\nre:publica

SUMMARY:Wereld Wachtwoordendag / World Password Day 2026
DESCRIPTION:Elke eerste donderdag van mei wordt World Password Day gevierd: een speciale dag uitgeroepen om het belang van sterke wachtwoorden te onderstrepen. \nLinks:\nGadget Guide: World Password Day \nWorld Password Day 2026 \n6 tekenen dat iemand toegang heeft tot jouw accounts

SUMMARY:EFFecting Change Livestream Series: Can't Stop the Signal (TV webcast)
DESCRIPTION:Internet shutdowns have become a powerful weapon. \nYears of digital repression in Iran have intensified during the current conflict with Israel and the U.S.. The Iranian government has once again shut down internet access\, isolating millions\, silencing dissent\, and blocking information about human rights abuses. In January 2026\, nationwide blackouts were used to conceal violations and suppress the largest protests since the 2022 Woman\, Life\, Freedom uprising. This is not unique to Iran. Around the world\, governments are pulling the plug to control narratives and crush resistance. But access to the internet is a human right—and people continue to find ways to stay connected. Join EFF and Amnesty International for a deep dive into the black hole of internet censorship\, and learn how journalists\, emergency responders\, and ordinary people can persist. \nLinks:\nEFFecting Change Livestream Series: Can’t Stop the Signal

SUMMARY:Tell Meta: Eyewear\, Not Spywear - petition
DESCRIPTION:Imagine if a stranger walking past you on the sidewalk could know everything about you with one glance: Your name. Your workplace. Your politics. Your health concerns. Even your favorite coffee shop. \nThis would be a massive invasion of privacy – and it’s exactly what Meta plans to enable with their internet-connected glasses. Meta intends to add facial recognition technology to their glasses\, enabling anyone wearing the product to immediately and invisibly identify strangers. Although specific details aren’t yet public\, Meta sits on vast databases\, including millions of personal profiles on Facebook\, Instagram\, and Threads\, and has long sought to power facial recognition tech with our data. This technology isn’t just a breach of privacy. It paves a path for stalking\, harassment\, and targeted intimidation. The technology is ripe for abuse from everyday people and government actors alike. These glasses are dangerous. They must be stopped. Tell Meta: Your glasses shouldn’t know our names. Demand privacy protections today. \nLinks:\nTell Meta: Eyewear\, Not Spywear
