DESCRIPTION:Elke eerste donderdag van mei wordt World Password Day gevierd: een speciale dag uitgeroepen om het belang van sterke wachtwoorden te onderstrepen. \nHoe dan ook\, de noodzaak van sterke wachtwoorden is niet te onderschatten\, gezien de vele berichten over phishing\, ransomware en datalekken. Jim Cox van cybersecuritybedrijf Proofpoint deelt zijn tips met ons. Hij schreef ze speciaal voor thuiswerkers\, maar ze gelden net zo goed voor de particuliere gebruiker. \nTips voor wachtwoordbeheer\n• Wijzig wachtwoorden regelmatig en hergebruik ze nooit. Als je denkt dat er een kans is dat je data gevaar loopt\, neem deze voorzorgsmaatregel dan direct en stel je manager op de hoogte van het beveiligingsprobleem.\n• Schrijf nooit je wachtwoorden ergens op. Maar als je je wachtwoord dan toch moet opschrijven\, zorg er dan in ieder geval voor dat deze niet zichtbaar is.\n• Gebruik een wachtwoordmanager om willekeurige wachtwoorden te maken die veilig worden opgeslagen\, gecodeerd en toegankelijk zijn op alle persoonlijke apparaten. Dergelijke software is relatief eenvoudig te implementeren en beschikbaar als een cloud-gebaseerde dienst\, waardoor het een verstandige investering is voor bedrijven\n• Implementeer\, indien beschikbaar\, tweefactor-authenticatie op accounts en apparaten om apparaten verder te beveiligen. Dit is vooral belangrijk voor personeel met toegang tot gevoelige informatie. \nTips voor het aanmaken van wachtwoorden\n• Wachtwoorden moeten uit ten minste 12 tekens bestaan\, met minimaal twee of drie verschillende soorten tekens op willekeurige plaatsen. Vermijd hoofdletters aan het begin en cijfers of symbolen aan het eind. Buiten hun normale internetcensuur praktijken zijn zij erg druk met mensen tegen elkaar uitspelen door middel van desinformatie en nepnieuws door op bijvoorbeeld Facebook te plaatsen. Helaas zien sommige mensen het nieuws dat op Facebook staat als dé waarheid. Vaak is dat ook de enige bron waar mensen hun nieuws vandaan halen. En daar loert het gevaar. Blijf kritisch is het devies. En het zijn niet alleen China\, Rusland of Turkije waar internetcensuur\, nepnieuws en desinformatie dagelijkse kost is. Zelfs in Nederland hebben we hiermee te maken. Grote internetbedrijven zoals Google en Facebook bepalen ook in ons land welke nieuwsfeiten we wel en niet te zien en te lezen krijgen op onze tijdlijn. Hierover ontstond in november 2025 onrust in de Tweede Kamer: zijn onze privé-gegevens wel veilig? Een meerderheid van de partijen wil nu alles op alles zetten om een overname door het Amerikaanse IT-bedrijf Kyndryl te voorkomen. Op dit moment heeft het kabinet geen directe instrumenten om de overname tegen te houden. De situatie rond DigiD is exemplarisch voor de bredere discussie over de groeiende afhankelijkheid van Europese overheden van Amerikaanse techreuzen zoals Google en Microsoft. Onderzoeker digitale identificatiesystemen Maud Rebergen\, bespreekt in deze editie van Let’s Ask de onderliggende vragen. Kunnen we het beheer van overheidsdiensten als DigiD overlaten aan de Amerikaanse markt? Wat zijn de risico’s? Kan de regering middelen krijgen om een eventuele overname toch te stoppen? DESCRIPTION:More than two-thirds of the world’s population accessed the Internet in 2023\, connectivity has changed lives and brought countless benefits\, but the digital world also brings significant risks. \nCybercriminals exploit online systems through malware\, ransomware and hacking to steal money\, data\, and other valuable information\, and they use information and communication technology to facilitate other crimes\, recruit victims\, perpetrate scams and launder money. The threat is only growing.  Transnational organized criminal groups have set up scam farms\, running billion-dollar criminal enterprises and defrauding victims from around the world through online romance schemes\, investment fraud and other scams. At the same time\, these criminal groups are luring people through online platforms and trafficking them to work in the scam centres. Prevention is the best defence against online threats\, and the international community needs urgently to raise greater awareness of the dangers of online fraud\, recruitment and trafficking. International cooperation must also be strengthened as cybercrime and online scams are cross-border threats\, exploiting scam victims in the most developed countries and trafficking victims in the most impoverished\, and Member States must work together in order to effectively prevent and address such crimes\, and protect people. The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) leads the UN response to cybercrime with training and support to countries across the world. Drawing upon the Office’s specialized expertise on fighting transnational organized crime and corruption and supporting criminal justice systems\, UNODC provides technical assistance to strengthen prevention\, reform legislative reform\, build and upskill law enforcement capabilities and improve international cooperation. \nLinks:\nDay against Cybercrime

DESCRIPTION:Het is bijna tijd voor de verkiezingen\, daarom werd in Den Haag een debat over digitale zaken georganiseerd. \nHet belang van dit grote thema is nog niet overal goed duidelijk. Bijvoorbeeld niet genoeg binnen de politieke partijen zelf\, terwijl verkiezingen online worden beïnvloed. Wat zijn dan die digitale zaken? Nou bijvoorbeeld (en er zijn er zoveel meer): \n\nPlatforms maken winst op polarisatie en de samenleving moet opdraaien voor de schade;\nOnze hele samenleving draait op computers en infrastructuur\, terwijl we het niet voor elkaar krijgen om het elektriciteitsnet slim in te richten;\nDe beveiliging van onze netwerken moet beter\, want er hangt – zoals we steeds vaker merken – zoveel van af;\nHoe houden we de internetverbinding betaalbaar als een paar grote partijen het voor het zeggen hebben?\nContact met de overheid moet digitaal\, maar dat lukt niet iedereen;\nAls we dan AI fabrieken optuigen: wat levert het op voor die regio (go Grun) en weten we wel waar onze investering en energie naartoe stroomt?\nBovendien: houden we ruimte over in datacenters op groene energie voor burgers en hun online communicatie?\n\nKortom\, genoeg om ons de komende tijd mee bezig te houden! \nDe geopolitieke belangen worden inmiddels gevoeld – en dat werd hoog tijd. Er komt eindelijk meer belangstelling voor lokale alternatieven. Niet alleen lokale opslag\, maar ook lokale infrastructuur en diensten. Dit is natuurlijk precies waarom Freedom bestaat en waar zij en onze partners voor strijden. Hier gaan ze richting Den Haag en gemeenten meer op in zetten. Freedom gaat ook over een andere manier van ondernemen. Het is een bedrijf opgezet en gesteund door de community. Daar mogen we trots op zijn! Dat is het verhaal dat wij vertellen: je kunt anders ondernemen en bestaansrecht hebben. Daarom bespreken we naast digitale thema’s ook zaken als crowdfunding\, steward ownership en maatschappelijk verantwoord ondernemen. Eerder deed Freedom onderzoek naar thema’s die zij belangrijk vinden in de verkiezingsprogramma’s. We hebben ook wel eens de websites van partijen door de internet.nl check gehaald om te kijken of ze voldoen. Wat ze nu doen? DESCRIPTION:The Free Software Foundation (FSF) turns forty on October 4\, 2025 and will end its thirties on a high note\, FSF wishes it was celebrating the achievement of software freedom for all computer users\, but we’re not there yet. \nUntil the mission becomes reality and FSF can retire\, instead\, it is celebrating forty years of activism\, and all that FSF has achieved. Since the founding in 1985\, FSF laid out many stepping stones on the road to software freedom\, and is eager to continue building the road ahead. We will celebrate our fortieth in the spirit of bringing the international free software community together\, discussing what we can do next to make the world freer\, and celebrating how far we’ve come. We’re aiming for a libre planet! Sounds familiar? Instead of hosting one LibrePlanet conference in 2025\, we’re planning a jam-packed anniversary year\, filled with several new and exciting activities! We’ll begin the anniversary year with an unprecedented memorabilia auction\, starting as a silent auction on March 17\, and culminating in a virtual live auction on March 23. By moving out of the FSF office\, we got to sort through all the fun and historically important memorabilia and selected the best ones. This is your chance to get your very own personal souvenir of the FSF\, from original GNU art to a famous katana and the very same VT220 that was standing on the FSF’s front desk\, and which people used to display ASCII art or to play free software games. \nLet’s claim the month of May as libre planet (or libre local) month! We’re inviting free software supporters like you anywhere in the world\, to organize an in-person community meetup in your area to bring people together. We’re setting up a small fund for these local gatherings\, can send stickers\, flyers\, ideas and tips\, and you can invite an FSF staff member to give a talk or workshop during your event and of course\, we’ll help promote it. DESCRIPTION:People’s Republic of China (PRC) state-sponsored cyber threat actors are targeting networks globally\, including\, but not limited to\, telecommunications\, government\, transportation\, lodging\, and military infrastructure networks. \nWhile these actors focus on large backbone routers of major telecommunications providers\, as well as provider edge (PE) and customer edge (CE) routers\, they also leverage compromised devices and trusted connections to pivot into other networks. These actors often modify routers to maintain persistent\, long-term access to networks. This activity partially overlaps with cyber threat actor reporting by the cybersecurity industry—commonly referred to as Salt Typhoon\, OPERATOR PANDA\, RedMike\, UNC5807\, and GhostEmperor\, among others. The authoring agencies are not adopting a particular commercial naming convention and hereafter refer to those responsible for the cyber threat activity more generically as “Advanced Persistent Threat (APT) actors” throughout this advisory. This cluster of cyber threat activity has been observed in the United States\, Australia\, Canada\, New Zealand\, the United Kingdom\, and other areas globally. The Cybersecurity Advisory (CSA) “Countering Chinese State-Sponsored Actors Compromise of Networks Worldwide to Feed Global Espionage System” includes observations from various government and industry  investigations where the APT actors targeted internal enterprise environments\, as well as systems and networks that deliver services directly to customers. This CSA details the tactics\, techniques\, and procedures (TTPs) leveraged by these APT actors to facilitate detection and threat hunting\, and provides mitigation guidance to reduce the risk from these APT actors and their TTPs. The authoring agencies strongly urge network defenders to hunt for malicious activity and to apply the mitigations in this CSA to reduce the threat of Chinese state-sponsored and other malicious cyber activity. Any mitigation or eviction measures listed within are subject to change as new information becomes available and ongoing coordinated operations dictate. DESCRIPTION:Researchers recently caught Meta using an egregious new tracking technique to spy on you\, exploiting a technical loophole\, the company was able to have their apps snoop on users’ web browsing. \nThis tracking technique stands out for its flagrant disregard of core security protections built into phones and browsers. The episode is yet another reason to distrust Meta\, block web tracking\, and end surveillance advertising. Fortunately\, there are steps that you\, your browser\, and your government can take to fight online tracking: \nChoose a browser with better default privacy protections than Chrome. For example\, Brave and DuckDuckGo protected users from this tracking technique because they block Meta’s tracking pixel by default. Firefox only partially blocked the new tracking technique with its default settings\, but fully blocked it for users with “Enhanced Tracking Protection” set to “Strict.” \nIt’s also a good idea to avoid using in-app browsers. When you open links inside the Facebook or Instagram apps\, Meta can track you more easily than if you opened the same links in an external browser. \nReduce the number of ways your information can leak by deleting apps you don’t trust or don’t regularly use. Try opting for websites over apps when possible. In this case\, and many similar cases\, using the Facebook and Instagram website instead of the apps would have limited data collection. Even though both can contain tracking code\, apps can access information that websites generally can’t\, like a persistent “advertising ID” that companies use to track you (follow EFF’s instructions to turn it off if you haven’t already). \nEFF’s free browser extension blocks trackers to stop companies from spying on you online. Although Privacy Badger would’ve stopped Meta’s latest tracking technique by blocking their pixel\, Firefox for Android is the only mobile browser it currently supports. You can install Privacy Badger on Chrome\, Firefox\, and Edge on your desktop computer. \nMeta’s business model creates an incentive to collect as much information as possible about people to sell targeted ads. Jim Cox van cybersecuritybedrijf Proofpoint deelt zijn tips met ons. Hij schreef ze speciaal voor thuiswerkers\, maar ze gelden net zo goed voor de particuliere gebruiker. \nTips voor wachtwoordbeheer\n• Wijzig wachtwoorden regelmatig en hergebruik ze nooit. Als je denkt dat er een kans is dat je data gevaar loopt\, neem deze voorzorgsmaatregel dan direct en stel je manager op de hoogte van het beveiligingsprobleem.\n• Schrijf nooit je wachtwoorden ergens op. Maar als je je wachtwoord dan toch moet opschrijven\, zorg er dan in ieder geval voor dat deze niet zichtbaar is.\n• Gebruik een wachtwoordmanager om willekeurige wachtwoorden te maken die veilig worden opgeslagen\, gecodeerd en toegankelijk zijn op alle persoonlijke apparaten. Dergelijke software is relatief eenvoudig te implementeren en beschikbaar als een cloud-gebaseerde dienst\, waardoor het een verstandige investering is voor bedrijven\n• Implementeer\, indien beschikbaar\, tweefactor-authenticatie op accounts en apparaten om apparaten verder te beveiligen. Dit is vooral belangrijk voor personeel met toegang tot gevoelige informatie. \nTips voor het aanmaken van wachtwoorden\n• Wachtwoorden moeten uit ten minste 12 tekens bestaan\, met minimaal twee of drie verschillende soorten tekens op willekeurige plaatsen. Vermijd hoofdletters aan het begin en cijfers of symbolen aan het eind. DESCRIPTION:De initiator van Wereld Dag tegen Internetcensuur\, Reporters Without Borders\, strijdt voor een vrije en open informatievoorziening; helaas blijven wereldwijd regeringen jaar in jaar uit druk bezig met internetcensuur en het manipuleren van sociale media. \nChina en Rusland spannen samen de kroon\, en dan niet alleen in hun eigen land. Zij gaan letterlijk en figuurlijk de grenzen over om op die manier buitenlandse democratieën te ondermijnen. Buiten hun normale internetcensuur praktijken zijn zij erg druk met mensen tegen elkaar uitspelen door middel van desinformatie en nepnieuws door op bijvoorbeeld Facebook te plaatsen. Helaas zien sommige mensen het nieuws dat op Facebook staat als dé waarheid. Vaak is dat ook de enige bron waar mensen hun nieuws vandaan halen. En daar loert het gevaar. Blijf kritisch is het devies. En het zijn niet alleen China\, Rusland of Turkije waar internetcensuur\, nepnieuws en desinformatie dagelijkse kost is. Zelfs in Nederland hebben we hiermee te maken. Grote internetbedrijven zoals Google en Facebook bepalen ook in ons land welke nieuwsfeiten we wel en niet te zien en te lezen krijgen op onze tijdlijn. DESCRIPTION:Our data is collected everyday — your computer\, smartphone\, and pretty much every other internet-connected device gathers data\, which might even include your wristwatch or car! \nBut you often have some choices when it comes to how this data is collected\, shared\, and sold. Personal data can be stored indefinably. Data can be used to make inferences about your socioeconomic status\, demographic information\, and preferences. Even seemingly innocuous information\, such as your favorite restaurants or items you purchase online\, can be used to make assumptions about you and your habits. Many companies have the opportunity to monitor the data of their users and consumers\, and they sell the data for profit. If this reality is sending chills down your spine\, don’t fret! You can take steps to control how your data is shared. You can’t lock down all of your data — even if you stop using the internet\, credit card companies record your purchases and the government knows your Social Security number. DESCRIPTION:De rijksoverheid is ondoordacht gaan werken in de cloud en denkt onvoldoende na over de risico’s\, de Algemene Rekenkamer concludeert in het rapport Donkere wolken pakken samen dat het Rijk maar beperkt zicht heeft op clouddiensten. \nVoor twee derde van de belangrijkste clouddiensten zijn niet de vereiste risicoafwegingen gemaakt. De Rekenkamer is bezorgd omdat dienstverlening aan burgers en bedrijven daardoor te veel risico loopt. De mogelijke schade kan onze maatschappij ontwrichten. Werken in de cloud kan de overheid efficiënter maken en haar dienstverlening verbeteren. Uit het onderzoek blijkt dat het Rijk hier al volop gebruik van maakt. Elk ministerie werkt ermee. Van de in totaal 1.588 in het onderzoek gerapporteerde clouddiensten bij het Rijk is van ruim een kwart (26%) niet bekend om welke vorm van cloud het gaat.
