DESCRIPTION:The rapid diffusion of AI is generating a wave of research measuring and forecasting its impacts on labor markets. \nBut the track record of past approaches gives reason for humility. For example\, a prominent attempt to measure job offshorability identified roughly a quarter of US jobs as vulnerable\, but a decade on\, most of those jobs maintained healthy employment growth. The government’s own occupational growth forecasts\, while directionally correct\, have added little predictive value beyond linear extrapolation of past trends. Even in hindsight\, the impact of major economic disruptions on the labor market is often unclear. Studies on the employment effects of industrial robots reach opposing conclusions\, and the scale of job losses attributed to the China trade shock continues to be debated. In the paper ‘Labor market impacts of AI: A new measure and early evidence‘\, a new framework for understanding AI’s labor market impacts is presented\, and is tested against early data\, finding limited evidence that AI has affected employment to date. Our goal is to establish an approach for measuring how AI is affecting employment\, and to revisit these analyses periodically. This approach won’t capture every channel through which AI could reshape the labor market\, but by laying this groundwork now\, before meaningful effects have emerged\, we hope future findings will more reliably identify economic disruption than post-hoc analyses.It is possible that the impacts of AI will be unmistakable. DESCRIPTION:De initiator van Wereld Dag tegen Internetcensuur\, Reporters Without Borders\, strijdt voor een vrije en open informatievoorziening; helaas blijven wereldwijd regeringen jaar in jaar uit druk bezig met internetcensuur en het manipuleren van sociale media. \nChina en Rusland spannen samen de kroon\, en dan niet alleen in hun eigen land. Zij gaan letterlijk en figuurlijk de grenzen over om op die manier buitenlandse democratieën te ondermijnen. Buiten hun normale internetcensuur praktijken zijn zij erg druk met mensen tegen elkaar uitspelen door middel van desinformatie en nepnieuws door op bijvoorbeeld Facebook te plaatsen. Helaas zien sommige mensen het nieuws dat op Facebook staat als dé waarheid. Vaak is dat ook de enige bron waar mensen hun nieuws vandaan halen. En daar loert het gevaar. Blijf kritisch is het devies. En het zijn niet alleen China\, Rusland of Turkije waar internetcensuur\, nepnieuws en desinformatie dagelijkse kost is. Zelfs in Nederland hebben we hiermee te maken. Grote internetbedrijven zoals Google en Facebook bepalen ook in ons land welke nieuwsfeiten we wel en niet te zien en te lezen krijgen op onze tijdlijn. In innumerable national and sub-national contexts\, students\, teachers and parents do not know where to find reliable digital resources to support learning and teaching. Fortunately\, a growing number of education systems\, in high and low income contexts alike\, are making investments to extend public education into online and digital environments. These investments complement and enrich the essential work that happens in schools and with teachers. The 2026 International Day for Digital Learning is an invitation to showcase where and how countries\, provinces\, and school districts are building – and using – digital commons to strengthen public education and improve its outcomes. In line with the 2026 theme\, UNESCO\, together with UNICEF and the  International Telecommunication Union (ITU)\, will launch the Charter for Public Digital Learning Platforms on the International Day. DESCRIPTION:The strong and continuous increase of AI-based services leads to the steady proliferation of AI data centres worldwide with the unavoidable escalation of their power consumption\, it is unknown how this energy demand for computational purposes will impact the surrounding environment\, scientists report in the paper ‘The data heat island effect: quantifying the impact of AI data centers in a warming world‘. \nData centres built to power AIs produce so much heat that they can raise the surface temperature of the land around them by several degrees – creating so-called data centre heat islands that may already be affecting up to 340 million people. The number of data centres built around the world is forecast to rise enormously\, data centre capacity will double between 2025 and 2030 – with AI expected to account for half that demand. Andrea Marinoni at the University of Cambridge\, UK\, and his colleagues saw that the amount of energy needed to run a data centre had been steadily increasing of late and was likely to “explode” in the coming years\, so wanted to quantify the impact. The researchers took satellite measurements of land surface temperatures over the past 20 years and cross-referenced them against the geographical coordinates of more than 8400 AI data centres. Recognising that surface temperature could be affected by other factors\, the researchers chose to focus their investigation on data centres located away from densely populated areas. They discovered that land surface temperatures increased by an average of 2°C in the months after an AI data centre started operations. In the most extreme cases\, the increase in temperature was 9.1°C. The effect wasn’t limited to the immediate surroundings of the data centres: the team found increased temperatures up to 10 kilometres away. Seven kilometres away\, there was only a 30 per cent reduction in the intensity. Using population data\, the researchers estimate that more than 340 million people live within 10 kilometres of data centres\, so live in a place that is warmer than it would be if the data centre hadn’t been built there. Marinoni says that areas including the Bajío region in Mexico and the Aragon province in Spain saw a 2°C temperature increase in the 20 years between 2004 and 2024 that couldn’t otherwise be explained. Chris Preist at the University of Bristol\, UK\, says the results may be more nuanced than they first appear\, suggesting that the building being heated by sunlight may be part of the effect. Either way\, the data centre is still increasing the ground temperature\, says Marinoni. \nLinks:\nAI data centres can warm surrounding areas by up to 9.1°C
