DESCRIPTION:World Orca Day is a celebration of the species orca or killer whale (Orcinus orca)\, a toothed whale belonging to the oceanic dolphin family\, of which it is the largest member. \nIt is recognizable by its black body with a white underside and patches near each eye. Killer whales have a diverse diet\, although individual populations often specialize in particular types of prey. Some feed exclusively on fish\, while others hunt marine mammals such as seals and other species of dolphin. They have been known to attack baleen whale calves\, and even adult whales. Killer whales are apex predators\, as they have no natural predators. A cosmopolitan species\, killer whales can be found in all of the world’s oceans in a variety of marine environments\, from Arctic and Antarctic regions to tropical seas\, absent only from the Baltic and Black seas\, and some areas of the Arctic Ocean. They are highly social; some populations are composed of very stable matrilineal family groups (pods) which are the most stable of any animal species. Their sophisticated hunting techniques and vocal behaviours\, which are often specific to a particular group and passed across generations\, have been described as manifestations of animal culture. \nThe International Union for Conservation of Nature assesses the orca’s conservation status as data deficient because of the likelihood that two or more killer whale types are separate species. Some local populations are considered threatened or endangered due to prey depletion\, habitat loss\, pollution (by PCBs)\, capture for marine mammal parks\, and conflicts with human fisheries. In late 2005\, the southern resident killer whales\, which swim in British Columbia and Washington state waters\, were placed on the U.S. Endangered Species list. Wild killer whales are not considered a threat to humans and no fatal attack on humans has ever been documented\, but there have been cases of captive orcas killing or injuring their handlers at marine theme parks. DESCRIPTION:Evenement om aandacht te vragen voor de bedreigingen waar haaien mee te maken hebben. \nFeit is dat deze machtige roofdieren meer van ons te duchten hebben dan andersom. Meer dan 100 miljoen haaien leggen elk jaar het loodje en diverse soorten dreigen uit te sterven. De grootste bedreiging voor de haaien is zoals gewoonlijk de mens. Onze motorboten\, visnetten en onze angst voor haaien vormen bedreigingen voor het bestaan van de haai. Maar net als andere toppredators op het land spelen haaien een essentiële rol bij het gezond en productief houden van de zeeën. De grootste bedreiging is geld. Simpelweg omdat dode haaien nu eenmaal veel geld opleveren. Alleen al in de haaienvinnensoep verdwijnen miljoenen haaien. Ze worden ook gedood voor hun tanden (souvenir)\, kraakbeen (medicijn) en lever (vitamine A). Sinds de film Jaws vinden veel mensen het stoer om een haai te vangen. DESCRIPTION:Welke soorten vlinders vliegen er in jouw tuin? Tel mee met de tuinvlindertelling en help de vlinders beter in kaart te brengen! \nLoop tijdens de tellingdagen een rondje door de tuin en noteer gedurende 15 minuten alle vlinders die je ziet. Maar tel deze waarnemingen niet bij elkaar op\, want dan kan het zijn dat je vlinders twee keer telt. Geef van elke vlindersoort het hoogste aantal door in het telformulier dat je tegelijk hebt gezien. Voorbeeld: je ziet eerst 3 dagpauwogen tegelijk. Tien minuten later zijn er weer 2 dagpauwogen. Dan geef je door: 3 dagpauwogen. Zie je later op de dag of één van de andere teldagen weer vlinders? Dan kun je die doorgeven via een nieuwe telling. Heb je een vlinder gezien die niet in de tellijst staat? Dat kan; we tellen alleen de meest voorkomende soorten tuinvlinders. Je hoeft deze waarneming dan niet in te vullen. Belangrijk: als je geen vlinders ziet is het ook belangrijk om dit door te geven. DESCRIPTION:Cow Appreciation Day occurs on the second Tuesday of July every year\, to raise awareness of what cows do for us humans\, as they are an important part of society and are often mistreated. \nWe need to learn to appreciate the animal behind the meat\, as it has been reported that many cows and farm animals are treated inhumanely on factory farms\, and often have 500 cattle or more. There are some benefits to eating meat\, as they have high nutritional value\, are rich in protein\, and can be good for your diet if consumed in small amounts\, but there are also many health risks. Diets with red meat and high-fat dairy foods can be associated with diabetes and cardiovascular disease which can lead to early death\, and diets high in fruit and veg can reduce these risks. As mentioned above\, there are now many meat alternative available that many people are turning to- but what are the health benefits? The benefits to Plant-based meat substitutes include: conserving the environment; as growing plants takes up less space and less water\, and eating plant-based reduces animal suffering as you will be cutting out meat. Plant-based meat alternatives are also better for your overall health due to you having lower cholesterol\, lower blood sugar\, and you are less likely to be obese. Impact of Meat on Sustainability and the Environment of meat production and consumption\, and aside from health risks\, it is so damaging to the environment: \n\nSustainability and climate change: Animal livestock uses a disproportionately large amount of land (around 77%) which is unsustainable. It is also estimated that the meat and dairy industry accounts for approximately 15% of all global greenhouse gas emissions.\nGreenhouse gas emissions: Meat consumption releases an array of greenhouse gases and this causes global warming which ultimately contributes to climate change. Livestock farming also causes emissions of greenhouse gases through destroying forests and ecosystems\, use of fertiliser\, and decaying manure.\nDeforestation: Beef and soy production are related to the loss of forests in South America\, including areas of Brazil\, Argentina\, and the Amazon Rainforest. Deforested areas can be cleared using fire\, and this causes huge amounts of carbon dioxide to be released.\nBiodiversity loss: Many habitats and species are becoming extinct due to natural environments being destroyed to raise animals for meat. Around half of the planet’s habitable land is used for agriculture- with a vast majority of this used to graze livestock.\n\nTo celebrate this\, some folks like to: \n\nWear cow-printed or cow-inspired outfits (think cowboy hats and cowbell necklaces)\nHost cow-themed parties with moo-moo decorations and cow-shaped snacks\nVisit local farms or petting zoos to get up close and personal with those adorable cows\nShare cow-related memes and jokes on social media (because\, let’s face it\, cow puns are the best)\nOffer discounts or freebies at cow-friendly businesses\n\nAnd\, of course\, who could forget the most important tradition of all – FREE COW-THEMED FOOD. Many restaurants and cafes offer special deals and menu items on Cow Appreciation Day\, so be sure to keep an eye out for those moo-velous offers. Interestingly\, some people also use this day to raise awareness about cow welfare and sustainable farming practices. DESCRIPTION:In de nacht van zondag 6 op maandag 7 juli 2025 bezetten 39 dierenactivisten slachterijen van VanDrie Group. \nDe actievoerders hadden zich vastgeketend op het terrein en zijn binnengegaan in de slachterijen. Hierdoor ligt de productie op de locaties stil. Het gaat om leden van de Franse dierenrechtenorganisatie 269 Libération Animale. Ze protesteren tegen geweld tegen dieren. De slachterijen discrimineren volgens de actievoerders dieren alleen omdat het dieren zijn en denken dat ze kunnen doden om geld te verdienen. Dat is niet goed en moet gestopt worden. DESCRIPTION:De Werelddag voor de Dolfijnen in Gevangenschap (World Day for Captive Dolphins) is een bewustwordingsdag die in het leven is geroepen door de Engelse organisatie Born Free Foundation\, FAADA (Spanje)\, LAV (Lega Anti Vivisezione) en Marevivo (Italië). \nDeze dierenbeschermingsorganisaties hebben als hoofddoel de nu nog in totaal wereldwijd meer dan 800 dolfijnen in aquaria en dolfinaria te bevrijden. Helaas kunnen dolfijnen uit gevangenschap vaak niet meer overleven in het wild. Griekenland kent dit probleem en heeft in 2020 bij het Griekse eiland Lipsi het allereerste reservaat geopend voor dolfijnen die gered zijn uit gevangenschap. \nFree Flipper\nDolfijnen worden in het algemeen gehouden in dolfinaria\, waar ze moeten leven in bassins die totaal niet te vergelijken zijn met hun natuurlijke omgeving. In het wild leven dolfijnen in grote sociale groepen en zwemmen ze honderden kilometers per dag in de open oceaan. In dolfinaria moeten ze het stellen met een krappe ruimte waarin hun natuurlijke gedrag niet goed tot uiting kan komen. De chronische stress die hun gevangenschap met zich mee brengt veroorzaakt onder andere verlies van eetlust wat resulteert in een zwakke gezondheid. Dolfijnen in gevangenschap sterven dan ook eerder dan hun soortgenoten in het wild. Veel dieren worden depressief en het toedienen van antidepressiva is daarom ook geen uitzondering in dolfinaria. \nDolfinaria in Europa\nEr zijn in Europa nog 17 landen die één of meer dolfinaria hebben. Dertien Europese lidstaten (Oostenrijk\, Kroatië\, Cyprus\, Tsjechië\, Estland\, Hongarije\, Letland\, Luxemburg\, Polen\, Republiek Ierland\, Slowakije\, Slovenië en het Verenigd Koninkrijk) zijn dolfinaria vrij. Er is nog een lange weg te gaan. In meer dan de helft van de (nog) bestaande dolfinaria in Europa worden zwemmen met dolfijnen activiteiten aangeboden en/of word je in de gelegenheid gesteld om op de foto te gaan met een dolfijn. Deze activiteiten zijn puur gericht op zoveel mogelijk geld verdienen. Geld dat gebruikt wordt voor eigen gewin en dat niet gebruikt wordt voor betere levensomstandigheden voor de in gevangenschap levende dolfijnen. Dolfinarium Harderwijk is (in 2023) met 25 dolfijnen het op een na grootste dolfinarium van Europa. Alleen Zoomarine Algarve in Portugal houdt nog meer\, namelijk 27\, dolfijnen in gevangenschap\, twee meer dan het Dolfinarium. Beide dolfinaria houden beduidend meer dolfijnen dan de meeste dolfinaria in Europa: gemiddeld zijn er 9 dolfijnen per locatie. Spanje is het land met de meeste dolfijnen in gevangenschap van Europa\, daar leven 93 dolfijnen verspreid over 10 dolfinaria. Nederland staat op de vierde plek\, maar dan maar met één dolfinarium. DESCRIPTION:Een klein zoogdier inheems in de woestijngebieden van zuidelijk Afrika\, het stokstaartje (Suricata suricatta) wordt in het zonnetje wordt gezet op Wereld Stokstaartje Dag\, die jaarlijks op 3 juli wordt gevierd. \nHet stokstaartje is een klein roofdier dat tot de mangoesten behoort. Hij wordt ook wel “aardmannetje” genoemd en bewoont alle delen van de Kalahari in zuidelijk Afrika (Angola\, Botswana\, Namibië en Zuid-Afrika). Het stokstaartje eet voornamelijk insecten\, spinnen\, schorpioenen en slakken. Van alle mangoesten zijn de stokstaartjes de meest sociale. DESCRIPTION:Fisheries provide a vital source of food\, employment\, recreation\, trade and economic well-being for people throughout the world. \nIn a world of growing population and persistent hunger\, fish has emerged as an important commodity for the achievement of food security. However\, efforts by the international community to ensure the sustainability of fisheries are being seriously compromised by illegal\, unreported and unregulated fishing activities. According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) illegal\, unreported and unregulated fishing activities are responsible for the loss of 11–26 million tonnes of fish each year\, which is estimated to have an economic value of US$10–23 billion. To curtail this impact\, Target 4 of Goal 14 of the Sustainable Development Agenda adopted in 2015 by the UN General Assembly\, specifically urges the international community to “effectively regulate harvesting and end overfishing\, illegal\, unreported and unregulated fishing and destructive fishing practices” by 2020. \nMeeting this ambitious target requires strong awareness-raising efforts to draw the attention of the general public to the negative impacts of illegal\, unreported and unregulated fishing activities\, an activity in which FAO has been actively engaged. To promote long-term conservation and sustainable use of fisheries resources the 1995 FAO Conference adopted the FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries. The Code is voluntary and sets out principles and international standards of behavior for responsible practices with a view to ensuring the effective conservation\, management and development of living aquatic resources\, with due respect for the ecosystem and biodiversity. In 2009 the FAO Conference adopted the Agreement on Port State Measures to Prevent\, Deter and Eliminate Illegal\, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing. The Agreement is binding and stipulates minimum port State measures to prevent\, deter and eliminate illegal\, unreported and unregulated fishing. DESCRIPTION:Inheemse leiders van eilanden in de Stille Oceaan werken samen met hun overheden aan de allereerste wet ter wereld die walvissen tot rechtspersonen maakt\, hierdoor kunnen ze vertegenwoordigd worden in de rechtbank en kunnen hun belagers ter verantwoording worden geroepen. \nDe Inheemse leiders die voor de wet vechten\, vragen nu onze steun. Over twee weken lanceren ze hun oproep tijdens de VN-Oceanentop in Frankrijk. Als genoeg van ons deze petitie ondertekenen\, kunnen we landen zover krijgen dat ze achter het voorstel gaan staan. Deze wet is een ode aan Inheemse kennis en kan natuurbescherming kracht bijzetten en vernietigende industrieën verantwoordelijk houden. Het voorstel krijgt de steun van topjuristen\, en verschillende landen hebben het al opgenomen in een verdrag. Het is onderdeel van een groter plan met een ‘blauw’ investeringsfonds en verschillende opvangcentra voor walvissen. Eén overheid uit de regio staat al achter de wet! Nu is het aan ons om een wereldwijde\, oorverdovende oproep te laten horen voor de meest majestueuze dieren van de oceaan. Samen kunnen we een wet werkelijkheid maken die zegt dat walvissen ertoe doen — niet als een hulpbron die uitgeput kan worden door mensen\, maar als levende wezens met een ziel en rechten. Avaaz heeft zich altijd ingezet voor de reuzen van de zee\, bijvoorbeeld toen we opstonden tegen de walvisjacht in IJsland of de blauwe vinvissen in de Golf van Californië beschermden. Nu kunnen we de spelregels helpen veranderen\, samen met Inheemse leiders en het Moananui Sanctuary Trust. Laten we dit doen voor de toekomst van de oceanen en volgende generaties. DESCRIPTION:Ieder jaar in mei wordt de verspreiding van vleermuizen onderzocht tijdens de Vleermuistuintelling. \nVleermuizen leven het liefst in buurten met veel groen\, water en een donkere nacht. De aanwezigheid van vleermuizen is dus een goede graadmeter voor hoe duurzaam en natuurrijk een buurt is. Ga tijdens de tellingsdagen buiten zitten vanaf zonsondergang totdat het donker is. Zoek daarvoor een plek met vrij zicht op een stuk hemel zodat je de vleermuizen kunt zien vliegen. Liefst ook met zicht op een boom of wat struiken\, want daar vliegen vleermuizen graag dichtbij. Noteer hoeveel vleermuizen je tegelijk hebt gezien en van welke soort. Geef de aantallen door via de website van Tuintelling. Er leven bijna twintig vleermuissoorten in Nederland. Zo’n vijf daarvan zou je vanuit je tuin kunnen waarnemen: de gewone dwergvleermuis\, de laatvlieger\, de gewone grootoorvleermuis\, de watervleermuis en de rosse vleermuis. DESCRIPTION:World Bee Day is celebrated on May 20\, on this day Anton Janša\, the pioneer of beekeeping\, was born in 1734. \nThe purpose of the international day is to acknowledge the role of bees and other pollinators for the ecosystem. The UN Member States approved Slovenia’s proposal to proclaim 20 May as World Bee Day in December 2017. Bees are flying insects closely related to wasps and ants\, known for their role in pollination and\, in the case of the best-known bee species\, the western honey bee\, for producing honey and beeswax. Bees are a monophyletic lineage within the superfamily Apoidea and are presently considered a clade\, called Anthophila. There are over 16\,000 known species of bees in seven recognized biological families. They are found on every continent except Antarctica\, in every habitat on the planet that contains insect-pollinated flowering plants. Bees and other pollinators\, such as butterflies\, bats and hummingbirds\, are increasingly under threat from human activities. Pollinators allow many plants\, including many food crops\, to reproduce. Not only do pollinators contribute directly to food security\, but they are key to conserving biodiversity – a cornerstone of the Sustainable Development Goals. They also serve as sentinels for emergent environmental risks\, signaling the health of local ecosystems. Invasive insects\, pesticides\, land-use change and monocropping practices may reduce available nutrients and pose threats to bee colonies. Elephant Parade staat wereldwijd bekend als de grootste openluchtkunstexpositie van deze handbeschilderde olifantenbeelden – in het formaat van een baby-olifant – en deed in 2009 al eens eerder de hoofdstad aan. Amsterdam kan zich opnieuw scharen in het rijtje van (inter)nationale steden\, zoals Londen\, Milaan\, Rio de Janeiro\, Las Vegas en Dubai\, om het gastheerschap van dit evenement te verzorgen. Lokale en internationale kunstenaars creëren unieke ontwerpen om aandacht te vragen voor het behoud van olifanten. De expositie in Amsterdam belooft een visueel spektakel te worden dat kunst\, cultuur en natuurbescherming samenbrengt op een iconische locatie. SUMMARY:#ForwardForAnimals Start campaign calls for legislative proposals on animal welfare by 2026
DESCRIPTION:There are strong ethical\, economical and ecological reasons to modernise animal welfare policy\, Forward for Animals calls on the EU’s decision makers to support an ambitious and timely proposal for all species on farms in 2026. \nForward for Animals\, campaign from the Eurogroup for Animals network\, looks to expose the reality of animals on farms in the EU\, debunk myths from the industry\, and provide positive solutions for all stakeholders. On farms across Europe\, millions of animals are suffering from neglect and cruelty. The laws that protect them have not been thoroughly reviewed for over 40 years\, leaving them not fit for purpose\, and leaving sentient beings unprotected. The European Commission launched a much-needed revision of the animal welfare legislation five years ago\, with a promise to publicly present the proposal by 2024. Disappointingly\, the commitment to modernise the rules has continually been pushed back and delayed. Responding to increasing pressure to deliver the proposals\, Commissioner for Animal Welfare Oliver Várhelyi promised updated legislation for animals on farms by 2026. He committed to ensuring this legislation will modernise existing EU animal welfare standards\, and finally deliver on the promise to ban cages in farming. These laws must reflect citizen mandates\, the evidence and consensus of the scientific community\, and a firm and real commitment to end unnecessary animal suffering across the farming\, transport\, trade\, science\, and the environmental spaces. The campaign highlights that dignity\, kindness\, compassion and safety should be basic rights for all sentient beings in Europe. Therefore the EU should enshrine these principles in policy\, ensuring a progressive and fair society for humans and animals alike. Later in the year\, citizens will have the opportunity to participate and voice their support for the campaign. \nLinks:\nForward for Animals

DESCRIPTION:By 蕭漫 – Own work based onBernard DUPONT from FRANCEDavid SifryGreg Goebel from Loveland CO\, USARufus46\, CC BY-SA 4.0\nWorld Tapir Day is celebrated on 27 April each year and exists to raise awareness about the species of tapir that inhabit Central and South America and Southeast Asia and to raise funds to purchase land to protect it from human encroachment. \nTapirs are large herbivorous mammals that inhabit jungle and forest regions of South America\, Central America\, and Southeast Asia. As large herbivores\, tapirs are invariably the first species affected by human encroachment into their territory\, and amongst the last to return to regrowth forest. They require substantial tracts of undisturbed land to maintain a genetically-diverse population. Tapirs inhabit jungles\, grasslands\, swamps and cloud forests\, yet each is threatened by human activity – be that mining\, palm oil plantations\, roads or settlements. They form an important part of the ecosystem as seed dispersers\, and form one of the oldest surviving genera in the animal kingdom. Despite their size\, history and ecological importance\, tapirs remain one of the least recognised species of animals. In comparison with other animals\, tapirs feature little in the collective consciousness and are frequently misidentified by zoo visitors. \nEven in their home ranges\, tapirs receive little attention\, with exotic species featuring more prominently in zoos\, children’s books and the media. The plight of tapirs is symbolic for the wider threat to their habitats specifically\, and the world’s ecology in general. The decline of tapir populations is indicative of the general health of their ranges; their disappearance from their home ranges often marks a point of ‘no return’ for the natural environment. The destruction of forests into small\, isolated enclaves and the encroachment of human activity into pristine forests affects all native species. However\, as the largest – yet perhaps the quietest – of animals in their ranges\, tapirs disappear without trace with countless other species. All tapirs are endangered species.
