SUMMARY:David Attenborough 100
DESCRIPTION:David Frederick Attenborough (/ˈæt(ə)nb(ə)rə/; born 8 May 1926) is an English broadcaster\, natural historian\, conservationist\, writer\, producer and narrator. \nHis presenting career began as host of Zoo Quest in 1954\, and has spanned eight decades; it includes the nine documentary series forming The Life Collection\, Natural World\, Wildlife on One\, the Planet Earth franchise\, The Blue Planet and Frozen Planet. He is the only person to have won BAFTA Awards in black-and-white\, colour\, high-definition\, 3D and 4K resolution. Over his life\, he has collected dozens of honorary degrees and awards\, including three Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Narrator and one Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Daytime Personality – Non-Daily. Attenborough was a senior manager at the BBC\, working as controller of BBC Two and director of programming for BBC Television in the 1960s and 1970s. While his earlier work focused primarily on the natural world\, his later work has been more vocal in support of environmental causes. He has advocated for restoring planetary biodiversity\, limiting population growth\, switching to renewable energy\, mitigating climate change\, reducing meat consumption and setting aside more areas for natural preservation. On his broadcasting and passion for nature\, NPR stated that Attenborough “roamed the globe and shared his discoveries and enthusiasms with his patented semi-whisper way of narrating”. He is widely considered a national treasure in the UK\, though he does not embrace the term. \nLinks:\nWish Sir David Attenborough a happy 100th birthday

SUMMARY:Vleermuistuintelling 2026

SUMMARY:#SavetheBees #WorldBeeDay / Wereld Bijendag 2026
DESCRIPTION:World Bee Day is celebrated on 20 May\, on this day Anton Janša\, the pioneer of beekeeping\, was baptized in 1734. \nThe purpose of the international day is to acknowledge the role of bees and other pollinators for the ecosystem. The UN Member States approved Slovenia’s proposal to proclaim 20 May as World Bee Day in December 2017. Bees are winged insects that form a monophyletic clade Anthophila within the superfamily Apoidea of the order Hymenoptera\, with over 20\,000 known species in seven recognized families. Some species – including honey bees\, bumblebees\, and stingless bees – are social insects living in highly hierarchical colonies\, while over 90% of bee species – including mason bees\, carpenter bees\, leafcutter bees\, and sweat bees – are solitary. Members of the most well-known bee genus\, Apis (i.e. honey bees)\, are known to construct hexagonally celled waxy nests called hives. Unlike the closely related wasps and ants\, who are  carnivorous/omnivorous\, bees are herbivores that specifically feed on nectar (nectarivory) and pollen (palynivory)\, the former primarily as a carbohydrate source for metabolic energy\, and the latter primarily for protein and other nutrients for their larvae. They are found on every continent except Antarctica\, and in every habitat on the planet that contains insect-pollinated flowering plants. The most common bees in the Northern Hemisphere are the Halictidae\, or sweat bees\, but they are small and often mistaken for wasps or flies. \nBees range in size from tiny stingless bee species\, whose workers are less than 2 millimeters long\, to the leafcutter bee Megachile pluto\, the largest species of bee\, whose females can attain a length of 39 millimeters. Vertebrate predators of bees include primates and birds such as bee-eaters; insect predators include beewolves and dragonflies. Bees are best known for their ecological roles as pollinators and\, in the case of the best-known species\, the western honey bee\, for producing honey\, a regurgitated and dehydrated viscous mixture of partially digested monosaccharides kept as food storage of the bee colony. Pollination management via bees is important both ecologically and agriculturally\, and the decline in wild bee populations has increased the demand and value of domesticated pollination by commercially managed hives of honey bees. Human beekeeping or apiculture (meliponiculture for stingless bees) has been practiced as a discipline of animal husbandry for millennia\, since at least the times of Ancient Egypt and Ancient Greece. Bees have appeared in mythology and folklore\, through all phases of art and literature from ancient times to the present day\, although primarily focused in the Northern Hemisphere where beekeeping is far more common. In Mesoamerica\, the Maya have practiced large-scale intensive meliponiculture since pre-Columbian times. \nLinks:\nWorld Bee Day | 20 May

SUMMARY:World Fish Migration Day 2025
DESCRIPTION:World Fish Migration Day is a biennial international one-day global celebration to raise awareness for the importance of free-flowing rivers and migratory fish\, organisations from around the world organise their event around the common theme of FREE FLOW. \nMany fish need to migrate to reproduce\, feed and complete their life cycles. They are a crucial link in the food chain and play an essential role in creating healthy and productive river systems. Furthermore\, they are vital to the livelihood of millions of people around the world. They are ecologically\, culturally\, economically\, and recreationally important! However\, many are critically endangered or threatened. It is our shared responsibility to find solutions to restore fish migration\, recover healthy rivers and prevent future degradation and species extinction! To accomplish this brighter future\, an excellent place to start is by educating others and raising awareness about the current situation as well as discover and implement solutions to the challenge. \nLinks:\nWorld Fish Migration Day

SUMMARY:#WorldOtterDay / Wereld Otter Dag 2026
DESCRIPTION:World Otter Day takes place on the last Wednesday in May each year. The day was established by IOSF to help draw attention to otters\, celebrate them\, and raise awareness and support for their conservation globally. \nThe aim is to put otters on the map\, and at the forefront of people’s mind. It focuses on raising awareness about how important otters are and also highlights the threats that they face. There are certain issues faced by otters that some people are largely unaware of\, such as the huge trade in these animals for pets and fur. World Otter Day addresses this.\n\nLinks:\nWorld Otter Day

SUMMARY:#FightIUUfishing Day for the Fight against Illegal\, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing / Dag voor de Strijd tegen Illegale Visserij 2026
DESCRIPTION:Fisheries provide a vital source of food\, employment\, recreation\, trade and economic well-being for people throughout the world. \nIn 2015\, the General Fisheries Commission for the Mediterranean of the FAO proposed that an initiative be launched to declare an International Day for the Fight against Illegal\, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing. Following extensive consultations\, a proposal was submitted to the attention of the thirty-second session of FAO Committee on Fisheries. The Committee on Fisheries endorsed the proposal for the declaration of 5 June as the International Day for the Fight against Illegal\, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing. The date reflects the day when the Port State Measures Agreement officially entered into force as an international treaty. The entry into force of this agreement marks an historical event\, as it is the first international legally-binding instrument specifically devoted to the fight against illegal\, unreported and unregulated fishing. The proposed draft resolution was submitted to the 40th Session of the FAO Conference (July 2017) for approval. In December 2017 the UN General Assembly in its annual resolution on sustainable fisheries proclaimed 5 June as the “International Day for the Fight Against Illegal\, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing.” In a world of growing population and persistent hunger\, fish has emerged as an important commodity for the achievement of food security. However\, efforts by the international community to ensure the sustainability of fisheries are being seriously compromised by illegal\, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing activities. According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization’s (FAO) recent report\, “Review of the State of World Marine Fishery Resources – 2025\,” over a third of fish stocks are being overexploited. IUU fishing catches millions of tonnes of fish every year. To curtail this\, Target 4 of Goal 14 of the Sustainable Development Agenda adopted in 2015 by the UN General Assembly\, specifically urged the international community to “effectively regulate harvesting and end overfishing\, illegal\, unreported and unregulated fishing and destructive fishing practices” by 2020. Meeting this ambitious target requires strong awareness-raising efforts to draw the attention of the general public to the negative impacts of illegal\, unreported and unregulated fishing activities\, an activity in which FAO has been actively engaged. \nLinks:\nDay for the Fight against Illegal\, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing

SUMMARY:#WSD2026 World Swift Day / Wereld Gierzwaluw Dag 2026
DESCRIPTION:The World Swift Day (WSD) was created in January 2019 by Swifts Without Frontiers. \nEvery year since then\, it has been celebrated around the globe\, on June 7. Since day 1\, Dr. Jane Goodall has been an enthusiatic Patron\, each and every year. Swifts Without Frontiers invites all NGO’s\, municipalities\, individuals\, companies\, schools and any collectivity caring for Swifts to celebrate that day by communicating about Swifts (whichever species) and by organizing events. WSD was initially inspired by other World Days like the World Sparrow Day\, then by the World Chimpanzee Day. The date of June 7 was chozen as the best “compromise date” between both hemispheres and all the different Swift species of the world. Meanwhile\, it has been celebrated in more than 50 countries\, on all continents\, covering about 40 different species. \nLinks:\nWorld Swift Day
